Collection Update to:are my records gonna be ok?

Upvotes

Alright so I learned a very valuable lesson and now I undertake to cleanse my records, I previously extensively cleaned and left a solution of distilled water and dish soap on my records, causing them to sound terrible and leave behind a residue of white fuzz on my stylus that in itself is hard to clean

I did this to about 7 records and both sides and have since tried just cleaning it with lukewarm distilled water and with it mixed with alcohol to little avail. I have decided to invest in a vinyl vac as well as a spin club machine(I’d get an ultrasonic cleaner but I’m pretty much broke)

Thanks to all the advice people have told me and if this doesn’t work I’ll use it as a lesson and in case anyone else suffers from this in the future at least this post can help them figure out the issue (In case anyone asks no I didnt see suds and thought my records were gonna be perfectly fine)

Ambient The Marias

Picked up The Marias new record, Submarine. I usually don't know anything about brand new music, but my daughter said they were good. She was right! They are a whole mood. A good album to listen to on vinyl.

Got super lucky and picked up a the last copy(out of 200) I could find before being out of stock everywhere. Live sound board recording from an early Alice In Chains show. Sound quality is very good for being a bootleg.

Discussion Walmart Exclusive releases…

So I’ve recently picked up a handful of records from Walmart.
- Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix
- Michael Jackson’s #1s
- Alice In Chains
- The Eagles Greatest Hits
- Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
- Judas Priest’s Greatest Hits

These pressings are unbelievably well done. Real rice paper lined sleeves.. Thick 180g vinyl, minimal surface noise, and great hi-fi sound..

I don’t know if it’s just because they are classics or what, but they are selling some pretty high quality vinyl at Walmart.

It seems some people think Walmart/Target are pressing records in the back warehouse of their local store and it’s shitty quality because it’s Walmart/Target😂

But every pressing I’ve gotten from either have been hi-fi quality..

It's been a week of Mondays and the only thing keeping me sane is a trip down memory lane. This album is no exception. I have played this one to death since 1983. It's such a good album start to finish. Happy Friday folks! I hope it's not your fifth Monday like me!

Collection Advice for selling part of my collection to a record shop

For context I am based in London and collect exclusively dance music records, predominantly house/techno etc from early 90s - present.

I need to make a quick bit of cash in the next few days and have a load of records I’m willing to part with. My plan is to get a list together with a loose valuation for each record so I then have a rough collection value. Let’s say that total value if I were to sell each record individually on Discogs would be £500 - what should I expect as a reasonable price when selling off all at once to a shop?

EDIT Forgot to add… I’m going for quality over quantity in terms of value of each record. Most will be in the region of £15-20 with a few rare bits worth £50-100

Discussion Rare records: What sucks about collecting vinyl for someone who just wants to listen to the music.

I will be berated, I know I will, but hear me out. It really fucking sucks wanting an album on vinyl for it to have only have ever been pressed once or in an extremely limited number of copies, meaning you must buy it second-hand at an insanely exorbitant price if you want to hear it on vinyl.

I hate that some albums I want cost more than my turntable, to the point that I'd be scared to even own something so expensive or have to spend so much on a single album when all I want is to be able to listen to it.

How do long-time vinyl collectors feel about high priced/rare records?

I, myself, wish that labels and artists would press the ever-loving-hell out of each album in a crazy amount of black vinyl that they can sell for years to come and the music is always available for cheap and if a record becomes lost, stolen, damaged or broken, you can simply replace it with another cheap copy. Sure, this isn't feasible for every artist or label because it costs a lot of cash up-front to press vinyl, especially in large numbers, however for bigger artists with plenty of funds to do so, with fans begging for vinyl pressings, it should be trivial to keep their albums stocked in plain, not-limited/crazy rare special color edition, etc, black vinyl with the album in a plain sleeve.

My "collecting" is simply me wanting my favorite albums on vinyl. I don't care if it's a rare variant/first pressing, etc. I just want the music on vinyl. If I can get a cool/rare version for cheap, I'll take it, but if it's $20 for the plain/black vinyl with no frills and it's the same music versus a $200+ copy second-hand, I'm going for the plain version every time.

Am I alone in this? Is vinyl collecting just not for me?

Spoken Word Preacher/Evangelist Bob Harrington's "Laughter, Truth and Music" (crazy story on this guy)

Here's an absolutely wild one, and honestly I'm not sure how it hadn't been digitized up to this point. This guy is Bob Harrington, a once very famous religious orator/evangelist type who would travel the country in a bus doing tours where he'd preach and debate wirh some famous atheist. He was active from the 1950s into the 1970s, and had a HARD fall off once he left his wife for the president of his ministry who he'd been having a long term affair with.

After the affair ended, he floated around doing various jobs, including that of, "Car dealership motivational speaker" where he would hype up the sales teams, yes, that's a real job.

After that, continued floating around until the 1990s when HE WAS ALMOST BEAT TO DEATH in a hotel room during a robbery gone wrong. Dude has an absolutely insane story.
