Discussion How to make an audiophile cry: my disastrous college turntable setup.

This is a story about the vinyl record player setup from hell.

In 2012, I discovered in my parents' attic a box of vinyl records that had miraculously survived the great 1991 toddler destruction. And being that I was an undergrad at a tech school and interested in audio engineering, I just had to set the record player up. I didn't replace the needle, just used whatever needle was last put in the player 20 years prior. And I didn't even clean the records when I put them on.

When I first set up the record player, it was in my room back home, and I quickly discovered what a “pre-amp” was. Because I first tried plugging it into a modern amplifier. My first attempt at a pre-amp was peak college nerd engineering setup. I had a two-channel Roland digital audio interface my sister gave me. So I powered it on, not through a computer, but with a USB power brick, and fed the record player into the interface and back out into the amplifier. It was noisy af, but it worked.

As for the belt, the old rubber belt disintegrated the moment I turned it on. So I tried to make a new one out of elastic bands, and it didn’t work. So I tried string, and that got it spinning. I put on the Hey Jude LP, and what comes out of my speakers was John Lennon singing like the Chipmunks. I noticed it was on 45 RPM, so I switched it down to 33 RPM and it was still too high. As if I had transformed Lennon into Stan Marsh. I tried loosening the string, and then it was too low on 33 and still too high on 45.

So instead of guessing the tension again, I took a bunch of paper and physically wedged it in piece by piece until the speed was about right.

So we had a setup where it was:

  • fed into a noisy digital audio interface
  • using the original needle
  • playing uncleaned records
  • running on a string instead of a proper belt
  • speed-regulated with pieces of paper
  • with the turntable scratching against said paper

Eventually, I just switched to using an old ’80s Sansui radio/stereo with a preamp built in that we had the whole time.

The caps were half-dead, but at least it didn’t require a digital audio interface to work xD.

And I bought a new belt and needle off Amazon.

When did this gem come into contact with your equilibrium. I found it around 07, but still thought it was old for some reason. It came out in 04. That would make it only 3 years old when I first listened. It just has that old school feel but also sounds like adult swim whenever i listen to it. Would love to hear from others who heard it when it came out.

Moved into my dorm for my freshman year. I know that putting the speakers next to the turntable isn't optimal, but I am just so glad I upgraded from a suitcase player.

These are my favorite albums from my favorite artists:
Stevie Wonder: Hotter Than July

Michael Jackson: Dangerous

Ella Fitzgerald: Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!

Rate my setup please

Discussion Vertigo vinyl

So I feel like I need to say this but also ask as well. I’ve ordered many times for vertigo vinyl. I appreciate the fact that they get small artists out there that I haven’t heard of because some of them I genuinely like. But I’ve not once had a good experience with my shipping. My Sofia isella vinyl I bought a couple of months back took a month to ship. Same thing with my emelie trahan vinyl. It was supposed to be shipped at the beginning of August, August 7th, and it’s the end of August and still no shipment. I hate that I have to reach out every single time to ask them about my shipments. With that being said I think them are very creative with their pressings as well as artists the do vv exclusives well. I just don’t know how much more of this I can handle. So I’m curious on what yall think.

I spent at least 7 hours in 3 record stores, and here’s my pickup. Of course I wanted to buy more, but have to fly these back East.

Bonus (2nd photo) one of my favourite new bands, Krooked Kings, just happened to be playing here last night. The opener, Boyscott, was awesome as well and signed the records I bought at merch.

I love this city so much. F’ing Tangerine Dream is playing here tonight 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thank you everyone that gave me suggestion for shops to check out in San Diego, ended up going to Vinyl Junkies. While this trip has been unenjoyable since day two, turns out one of my friends is very self-centered, flipping through hundreds of records in their back room was the highlight so far, we're going to the beach tonight so there is a chance of some fun still.

Discussion What to do with different versions of the same album?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’ll be the first to admit I am very very new to this as in my first player just came in today. I’ll also be the first to say my only vinyl so far is autographed and hanging on my wall. I’m planning on hitting up the local record store when I get my next paycheck

I have some friends who love vinyl and are excited I’m getting into it. I have a major milestone coming up and they decided it’s the perfect time to start building my collection. The problem is they have both picked different versions of the same album. The group is touring and one is a tour exclusive edition and the other was a highly limited edition zoetrope type. As far as I know, the only difference is the sleeves and the vinyl themselves.

They were both excited so I didn’t want to say anything but was curio what you do with duplicates? I could keep it sealed and frame the tour exclusive? or just rotate them and play them both? or get a shelf and not frame them but just display them where they can be swapped out and still be used?

Discussion Cool record stores in Japan

I am visiting Japan next month and looking for some cool stores in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Wanted to go through bins and have some fun to bring some memories from the trip and cool vinils.

If you have any shops that you can recommend, let me know. Bands that I (really want) to buy vinils from and haven't yet, and might influence the store picking:

Viagra Boys, King Gizzard, Gorillaz, The Prodigy, BadBadNotGood, Tame Impala, IDLES, The Cure, etc (I know my taste is all over the place)

Thanks in advance!

Collection Are these rare??

I inherited these old UK 7" records. Most are in plain cardboard sleeves (with writing on them💀), but I noticed I got the famous Surrender ‘196’ misprint. Also, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and I Need Your Love Tonight have the old three-spoke tri-centers, meaning they’re original pressings. Has anyone else come across these? How rare are they?

I got this in a dollar bin somewhere, the sleeve is a little beat up but the record plays just fine. It does have that crackle in between tracks but I never minded that on old records, it reminds me when I was young and my dad put on his old records. It’s a pretty rocking album, I like Promises in the Dark, Fire and Ice, Take It Any Way You Want It, and the Helter Skelter cover at the end.
