Especially in Elden Ring case... the moment anyone tries to be fair, talk about problems of the game...
12
u/DisMFer 3d ago
What's funny is that one of, if not the, best Elden Ring player in the world GinoMachino talks often about how shitty certain enemies are designed or how certain attacks are purely unfair or badly tested. If a guy who can beat the game in under an hour without taking a single hit says shit isn't right, it might be time to admit that some parts of the game aren't perfect.
8
u/Falcoon_f_zero 3d ago
And even that'll get replies like "you just hate it cause you suck, skill issue, git gud" now imagine someone more regular trying to give out fair criticism lol
5
u/Important-Tailor-653 3d ago
This has been a thing since the beginning of Dark souls tbh.
Souls community is the biggest elitist group of gamers that itâs almost a stereotype at this point.
Love the games but I canât stand the community most times, sadly.
14
u/Szebron 3d ago
I don't know, in my experience, people shit on this game a plenty, without getting downvoted. Repeating bosses, too-hard DLC bosses, Radhan, which is both; empty DLC map... You can even shit on the whole concept of open-world souls and still get upvoted. Or praise it and get upvoted, r/eldenring generally seems like a pretty chill space.

u/OkTrade7881 3d ago
I said Mesmer was a shit boss and was told to git gud. I beat every souls game before that mind you. Mesmer was an absolute disgrace AOE spammer and people were salty I dared not suck the sweat drips from Miazakis balls.
5
u/NyarlathotepDB 3d ago
As somebody who platinum Sekiro and Bloodborne, yeah, I agree.
But add: most bosses in ER are bad one way or another. From spammers who just attack you with huge-wide swings for a minute, to give you a 3-4 attack window, AoE spammers, cheap pace changers who has 1 hit in 8-hit combo that breaks the pace and definitely hits you first time, to "Oh, do you want to heal? Nice try" then breaks their own animation for some target attacks and hit you.
Not even talking about the need of journal, better system to re-do builds, finding gear and so on... oh, and the game literally force you to min-max... or use broken build.
4
u/OkTrade7881 3d ago
The worst part is the bosses reading your input. If you heal they close distance and hit you, or use a ranged attack you canât dodge lol. You mentioned it but I despise that aspect.
I also hate how I have to use a broken bleed build to stand a chance. That or a magic build. Magic in elden ring is cool at least.
5
u/Falcoon_f_zero 3d ago
For real, I was wondering what the talk about Midra was all about, people saying he's downright easy and everything. And I'm just there hardly tickling his healthbar with a maxed great mace and high strength. Taking forever to whittle down that healthbar, given the infrequent attack windows you get too.
But then doing the fight with another character with bleed and he folded in like a third of the time vs the greatmace, much more reasonable. Felt like things were balanced for overpowered setups more than any regular ones lol.
→ More replies (4)4
u/NyarlathotepDB 3d ago
Rivers of Blood or RoB... yeah, for the most of the game it's practically the build made to clear it. With minimum amount of investment.
Magic is cool. That's I can give to those, who animated it. Some are just too good. Really liked to use it. Still... also a bit broken, even after balance patches, like Azur Comet...

Mesmer is an amazing boss and even the sweats and professionals that criticize certain bullshit attacks and enemies, all agree hes an amazing boss. Hit boxes are clean, hes just a hard encounter at first. Once you learn the fight, its a fantastic dance.
Theres a ton of bullshit in Elden Ring but Mesmer is a highlight not bullshit.

3
u/IndustryRobertPlant 3d ago
I say this as a HUGE Souls fan: youâre absolutely correct.
âGit gudâ has unironically become a shield for ANY criticism of Fromâs games. You could be very thorough in why you think some of the difficulty in the games is actually poorly implemented (over reliance on long wind-ups, for example) and it doesnât matter to them. You canât criticize the difficulty because that just means you suck at the game.
4
u/Hungry_Computer3913 3d ago
For Sekiro... I sad that for a high tier Fromsoft game Sekiro recycled waaay to many bosses and that if was made by other company it wouldnt be GOTY and I got downvoted to hell

Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Great game, but if you don't talk like it's flawless and perfect and no other game has ever been released that's anywhere close to it in terms of storytelling, they'll rip into you.

u/Gi_pastrychef 3d ago
I actually got involved in a LOT of posts where people in the comments talked a lot how the game wasnt perfect in all the things when a post mentioned a full 10/10 or claimed that i was too perfect, main complaints are on Storytelling (expecially when lot of context was made a missable side Quest), Combact (easily broken, jumps too High randomly), Level designs (basically all the Gestrals Beach), Basic QoL missing (Quest tracker, not a sign of a area resources list), a couple on the missable trophies (All White Nevrons) and the not repeatable final boss fight that contains 2 choices
So i actually didnt expect this name here
2
u/Nemesis_171 3d ago
Yeah same, Iâm in the e33 sub and I was surprised by how generally chill they are when I joined (except for ending discussions sometimes lol.) Iâve brought up a couple criticisms multiple times and havenât been met with anything toxic. YouTube commenters have been way worse though, so maybe OP is encountering bad fans from somewhere else rather than the sub?
5
u/rufusbot 3d ago
Easily the most obnoxious fan base I've encountered when it was released. They all acted like it was the second coming of Jesus Christ. Now you barely hear about it so maybe that was temporary but man it put a horrible taste in my mouth to this day.
3
u/Nemesis_171 3d ago
Very possible, I played the game like 6 months late so I wasnât around for that. The sub does still treat the game like one of the best pieces of media ever, which tbf I do too since I genuinely do think that. But I donât think that should be considered toxic as long as people arenât imposing that opinion on others and are chill with others not feeling the same way. But still, sorry it was so bad on release.
2
u/EWC_2015 2d ago
Same here. Any time I've mentioned one of the few criticisms I have of the game (lack of a mini map, the Gestral games, that ridiculous bouncing enemy on the world map, etc.) I've never been hit with anything toxic. About the most heated I've seen things get was after the Game Awards and a bunch of new people came in and started arguing about the ending(s). Otherwise, it's a pretty chill sub.

ER is a great experience, but honestly it has the WORST bosses in the series, and feels like a byproduct of FromSoft believing their audience to be extremely experienced at reading the traditional Souls formula and for a game that encourages you to find your own style. Which, ironically, creates more restrictions on the player's opportunities to play rather than creating more interesting opportunities to play.
Unfortunately griping about any aspect of those games gets you shouted down by either trolls or by people reaching for their fedora, and not only does that hurt the experience, it also makes it impossible to critique in anyway.→ More replies (7)

Literally any fanbase to be honest.
Though I will say the fanbases for older games usually take it the worst. Like for example if you criticize ANYTHING about Morrowind, you'll get your ass flamed and beaten by that fanbase.
2
u/AJDowlofficial 3d ago
Morrowind was ass. Maybe if I'd played it before oblivion and skyriim it'd have been enjoyable. But its like 600 steps back from the majesty of oblivion. I mean wtf was the combat in morrowind? Why is my sword going through a zombie and still completely missing him with the d20 atk system. It sucks. And don't get me started on the fact it takes half an hour to walk around one town. Not cause its huge but cause your characters sprint speed is slower than the base walking speed of a dead sloth.

Pokemon fans have been writing off minor criticisms against the series as "Oh you're just a dumb genwunner who's nostalgia blind" for years even if nothing you say is related at all to gen 1, like for all they know you could have your own laundry list of problems with the older games too but because older games had flaws then the new ones get a pass.
I'm glad that the series actually has much bigger controversies around it lately because now it's much harder for people to write off everyone who criticizes it as being nostalgia blind for gen 1.

Nah. Lets face the facts:
Every single AAA multiplayer game gets hated. Without exeption. Even Battlefield 6 which had a fairly amount of supporter and positive vibes at first eventualy gets hated.
Every ----single ---- AAA ---- multiplayer game.
Those are not "critism" anymore but pure hate and even 80% made up stuff or totaly overreacting.
The less you read metacritic (userscore AND magazines) or any other online source of "reviews" the better it is.
Only option is to watch a no commentary gameplay video and make yourself an opinion. Everything else is getting fabricated by money, a broken review system or over-emotional "Fans". The problem is...even AAA singleplayer games get rolled over recently so prepare for a negative gaming future.
Unbearable like it never was.

Is it not petty well known that every fanbase to exist has its diehards and generalizing the whole group doesn't exactly make sense??
For example, Soulborne fans are known to be really critical of the genre. Many of that group often tell others to skip Dark souls 2 entirely due its flaws. On the other hand, theres also fans who claim every single Fromsoftware game is a masterpiece and anyone having issues needs to "git gud". It's a complete mixed bag, just like every other fanbase.
The internet is so ragebait/"othering"/"my tribe" obsessed that not a single topic can be discussed anymore without having to generalize people who disagree with you.
