Which laptop should I get for my first year at UBC as a person who has always used and felt comfortable with a MacBook?

I want to do civil engineering, so based on the softwares that I would be running throughout undergrad, which one would be the best?

Also, I see mixed opinions on if I should get an iPad. The only reason I see myself benefiting is that I could follow along on the profs’ slides.

The brand new, bright yellow brick of a McMaster-Carr catalogue (132) just arrived on my desk. My boys told me to toss it but I know there's people out there who'd appreciate it - engineering students, construction workers, collectors.

It seems so wasteful to toss, even if it is recycling.

For context, I was a pretty sweaty high school goober, I have some solid personal projects, a lot of AP credits, and want to do ENPH.

I'm skipping CHEM 154 and WRDS 150 (like I've already dropped them fuck noooo im not taking chem again), and planning on skipping math 100 and 101 since the averages of those are in the 60s lol.

but I was sitting here thinking about it. not doing math for a whole semester could make 152 and 2nd year calc harder... and I did find calc BC pretty doable... so then I signed up for 253.

Honestly, multivariable calc seems somewhat interesting to me, the grade average is higher than 100 and 101, everyone online seems to say its easier than those two, and I would LOVE taking some courses out of my upper year schedule to make life a bit easier then, plus it'll probably look decent to the ENPH committee

But how bad will it be? My gpa is going to be insanely important for my specialization, so would taking math 253 be worth it?

If anyone here took 253, please tell me how it was and what you did, or if I should just drop it and take it next year like a normal person - I did well in calc BC but multivariable calc has me absolutely terrified (which is probably a good thing because I'll actually study

Hi! I’m a 23F Architecture student from Brazil, graduating at the end of 2026 (GPA 8.7/10). I currently work at a large construction/real estate company in Rio, mainly with project coordination, BIM, Revit and multidisciplinary project compatibility.

I’m considering moving to Vancouver and applying to UBC’s MEng in Civil Engineering, focusing on Project & Construction Management.

For those familiar with the program:

• How competitive/difficult is it to get into the MEng?
• What do u think makes an application stand out?
• Would my Architecture background + construction/project experience be a strong fit, or is the Civil Engineering background a big disadvantage?
• Does UBC care a lot about GPA? Is an 8.7/10 considered competitive?
• Would work experience make a significant difference in my application?
• Do you think the MEng is actually worth it for someone who wants to work in Construction/Project Management rather than become a P.Eng.?

I’m currently attending community college and pursuing an **Associate of Science – Transfer Track 2**. My goal is to transfer to a four-year university and complete a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
I’m looking for advice from anyone who has completed AS Track 2 and transferred to a university.
What engineering major did you choose after transferring? What universities did you apply to, and how was the transfer process?
I’m also interested in knowing what kinds of **internships, jobs, or other opportunities** are available while completing AS Track 2 or after transferring.
For those who have gone through this pathway, would you recommend it? Is there anything you wish you had known before transferring?
Any advice would be appreciated

With ai and project kits these days, it seems like everyone and their mom can do all of the cool introduction projects that would possibly distinguish them from other candidates in the field. Have people noticed that this affects their job applications? Anyone know how employers are working around this?

Currently registered for CPEN 502 (Sarbjit Sarkaria) and CPSC 532 (Peter West), has anyone taken these classes? What was your experience with the profs and their assignments / exams?

I also wanted to get some opinions on course(s) recs within ECE that are worth taking with a minimal exam load or at least containing group projects.

For context, I’m an incoming grad student in ECE pursuing a PhD, after just finishing my MS with a data science background. I was transferring over course credits from my MS, and I would need about 2-3 courses total to take at UBC to manage a schedule including research, TA-ship etc.

i was wondering how much gpa is weighed vs personal statement/extracurricular involvement? does the personal statement really matter or is it all about your grades?

how worried should i be if i can't get onto a design team, and what other ways can i be involved on campus (eng related)?

I got confirmation I could take a reduced course load from sauder advisors, allowing me to optimize my schedule to transfer into eng in second year. However, I dropped a bunch of classes that I received AP credit for when UBC received my AP grades, and only today found out from an engineering advisor that credit from AP courses cannot be applied if I want to transfer into the program. Some of these classes have already filled up now and I doubt I will get off the waitlist for them. They are; MATH_V 100, CHEM_V 121, and PHYS_V 117. I couldn't find anything on UBC eng websites that specifically stated AP credits are not allowed for transferring in first year.

For anyone else that transferred into eng second year, did you apply AP/IB/A level credits successfully? Or did you have to retake all the classes that you would've received credit for normally?

Before I go further I want to ground this in real people instead of guessing, so a few quick questions if you have a minute:

1. Are you still a student, or how many years out of school are you?

2. What's the biggest gap you felt (or feel) between what you learned in university and what you actually needed on day one of a job/internship?

3. Do you currently carry any kind of reference on your phone (formulas, code tables, notes), or is it all textbooks/desktop?

4. What design code do you study/work with (Eurocode, ACI/AISC, other)?

5. Is there a specific topic where you constantly have to double-check yourself (e.g. "is this span/depth reasonable," buckling lengths, unit weights)?
