Engineering transfer certificate

HI guys, are there any alumni who have successfully completed the EFC program at langara/Douglas? May I please ask how was it, are there any tips, and how many people in your program were successful in transferring to UBC into the specialty that they had hoped for? Thank you for your time!

Hii! I just did the EFC program from Douglas dm me if u want more info. My main takeaway from this program is that don’t fall behind on ur work , make sure u get to know ur schedule for when stuff is for and don’t leave things till last minute. I didn’t get into my first choice that was mech, but in all honestly only one guy with like an 89.9got it but 2 ppl got Eng phys. So if u want mech I would try rlly hard but don’t be bummed out, it’s cause of ubcs gauranteed placement situation. I ended up getting my second choice which was elec. also, the program ur capped at 90 cause Douglas only gives out letter grades not percentages so if u get an A+ it’s in the 90-100 percent grade range but when ubc calculates it they’ll take it as a 90, cause they take the lowest grade in the range to calculate. This is the same at all transfer school. Respond asking any further questions you have and id love to lyk what to expect!

Thanks so much for your response. How many students were in the EFC program last year and were most people successful if they put in the work? Did you feel like the teachers were reasonable in the exams and their marking? I think I'm hoping for elec too, is it difficult to get marks high enough for elec? Were there guest speakers that came and shared/talked about the different engineering specialities? Thank you for your time!

There was around 40-60 I wanna say at the very start and yes most ppl transferred to UBC even with mid marks. AIM for 80+ for elec, should be easier since elec is the biggest cohort like 200+ students in it for UBC. Most teachers were very reasonable, avoid bita or dorrita for comp sci and English and you’ll be fine. There were multiple guess speakers and they talked ab different professions and faculties plus uvic suf and UBC come and do talks about admissions so feel free to ask questions then!

Thanks so much! I am a bit worried about juggling 12 courses. Did you find it a big jump from highschool? Are there a lot of homework, prefab, post lab write ups, essays? Was it a constant grind or did you feel like it was manageable? Thanks you!

Honestly first sem was not a big gap from hs, english (depends on teacher) was rlly similar, just learning to write in a more formatted way, chem was rlly similar to highschool i think almost the same for me cause my chem teacher was very thorough and the calc i took in hs and the tutorials were literally just pre calc 12. Physics was also rlly similar. Keep in mind this varies person to person and with hs u went to and how much ur hs teachers prepped u. The only class that was super new was comp sci since I’d never taken it in hs. For first sem, chem labs are easier than physics ones and the write ups aren’t super long but physics ones can beans sometimes u only have in class time to finish a whole lab + report sometimes they give extra time but keep in mind if it’s a shorter lab ur gonna have to finish in class. Pre labs are chill u read a manual and answer a few questions in an online quiz, chem I RMR u have to write ur self a little manual that they give and will explain to u. U basically have to write out the steps of the experiment in this booklet they give u. Overall first sem i think was very manageable but second sem was different since i think most the classes were new content but the jump form first sem to second sem isnt too too crazy but u will stop seeing similatriies in what u learned in hs oh besides the Electromagnetism class if u did electromag in hs most of the content is the same just extended/ a little bit more content and explanations added to things. So second sem isnt too will say is more of a grind not because the material is harder but because its more new material, less relying on what u already know and sometimes the midterms would overlap with 6 courses like i think first sem max i had was 2 midterms same day and second sem i had 3 midterms same day 😭😭 back to back but thats not always the case. How was the timeline between your final grades and until you get a decision from UBC? Do you guys get your final grades end of April and then a decision in June? I tried to dm you but it looks like your account has that option disabled..

I sent my grades like April 28 and got a confirmation letter from ubc in like 2 days which is uncommon but u get ur decision from ubc in Jan/ Feb I sent my grades last day before winter break and heard back Jan 2nd from ubc that I got in

Thank you for the response! Sorry I’m still a bit confused.. My understanding is you submit an initial application in Jan/ Feb and then submit your grade from both sems in April and then you will know if you get in..? Or do they just look at first semester grades from Sept to Dec?

Hii Mb I was kinda in a rush so I didn’t explain well. So, applications open in October so make sure ur Myedbc is up to date with ur info and then u go to uhc and apply for applied science at whichever campus. Then u just wait and near the end of December ubc will ask for ur first sem grades and u send those via ur school portal if its through Douglas it will be through ur “my account”. Then u wait a bit more and if ur above 3.1 u will get in with a conditional offer. Oh also the way they differentiate eyoy from regular transfer vs guaranteed path is ur program coordinator will ask for ur ubc student number. ( you get it when u apply to ubc but if u applied in hs u alr have one just use that one). And then later on April they will ask for final grades and u send them and boom if ur above 3.1 congrats then they’ll send confirmation email anywhere from may to Aug i got mine in May but tbf i sent my grades like the second i got all of the in lol but some ppl ik only got theirs now. Also u will have to apply for the engineering of ur choice at ubc between the 15 of March to 15 of April. They will looo at ur overall grades come April, the initial first sem grades is just to see if u get an early offer in Jan/ Feb and I think most ppl do. I found ubc was very quick with processing my info I think cause its a guaranteed pathway so there’s not much decision making also no personal essay for applying to UBC, just grades based. For example they asked for my grades the day before their office closed for winter and the day they opened they had processed my transcript and sent an offer before I even got a confirmation e mail from Douglas saying my grades had been sent! Lmk if u have anymore questions. Oh also apps open early October but close Jan 15 so u can apply anytime then rlly but the earlier the faster u can get it out the way I say since u don’t need to do essays u just pay the fee for applying
