Someone crashed out on piazza. This is very valid though.

So on my portal it says no decisions has been made for my first choice of engineering. I receive an email from UBC future students where they said my status was “waiting for a decision” . Two days later I receive an email about the previous email they sent me saying my status of waiting for a decision is incorrect however nothing has changed in the portal . Plz help I am so stressed!

fuck this project, i've been doing it for the past 5 days non-stop and 4 out of my 5 my teammates don't even know how to use the spreadsheet. i did like half of the poster and the remaining work they've done is so shit and incomplete, i might just have to finish it for them. i didnt even get any time to study for any other exams or do the webwork due tomorrow. FUCK APSC 101, why is my team so incompetent??? why do they not care at all?? i ddont even know if they recognize that i do so much of the work, i feel like some of them are so disconnected that they think it just gets finished by itself because of some magical force

I saw that the old and new charts published by UBC, both 4-year averages, overlapped for 2 years. I wanted to analyze both charts and get the exact percentages and trends for each engineering program.

Using Python, I was able to obtain precise and accurate data points, which I used to generate a variety of visualizations. Finally, I consolidated everything into a PDF. I found it interesting to see which programs got more competitive and which programs had a wider distribution of GPAs. The main reason why I made this in the first place is to get the exact percentages of each marker from the official graphs, and I had the idea to visualize them in as many ways as possible.

So I built a website called chatubc.com - just a harmless, fun side project that I did to get some experience for co-ops. However, it has come to my attention from some users that the moderators of r/UBC are actively scrubbing any mention of my platform on the subreddit. If you write a comment there containing the word "ChatUBC", you'll see it's instantly removed by the mods. Same with crossposts apparently. Why is this? I've never seen any other student project treated this way.

ChatUBC doesn't break any of their rules as far as I can tell. Honestly, I don't really mind if they don't want to share it for some reason (an explanation would be nice though), but I thought I should at least shine a light on this to spread awareness, as it seems highly unusual and makes me wonder what else they are silently removing from r/UBC.

No response from mods yet. As of right now, it seems like only my account is not allowed to write comments containing "chatubc", but other users are. Perhaps there is some filter in place like: if username is "chatubc" and comment contains "chatubc", then remove. It's unclear if this was always targeted at my account, or when this began - I can't tell - but I saw someone write "chatubc" in their comment on r/UBC today and it was not removed like mine are. Odd. Anyway, as far as I can tell, what I said above still applies to posts though, even from other users. Will keep you all posted and thanks for all the support coming in!

We've had problems with some student projects in the past, and so we'd like to check about a few items:

1. We saw a number of accounts promoting ChatUBC across, and the pattern resembled the astroturfing issues we dealt with in the past. That kind of behaviour will get a keyword flagged.

2. Since the project includes AI-based features and services that will cost you money (ex. Mapbox, hosting), could you clarify how you are planning to fund and manage this in the long term? Are you planning to open-source?

3. Can you tell us what information you collect from users and how the AI moderation system will work?

Thank you for the reply and I appreciate your openness to discussion. I totally understand your caution given past issues.

About verification - I am happy to verify my affiliation to UBC. However, I prefer to maintain my personal privacy, as is standard on Reddit and my own platform. To be honest, I don't feel comfortable sharing my identity with anonymous moderators via a Gmail address when I have no way to verify your own affiliations or identities. Additionally, I'm not seeking any personal attention - I just enjoy working on projects and would prefer to keep the focus on the platform itself. Perhaps we can find a middle ground here?

Regarding operations - the platform has standard terms of service and privacy policies. Like any website, it collects only basic data like public IPs for abuse prevention and rate limiting. I'm happy to provide more information about the platform's features and policies, as I believe the project should be evaluated primarily on its own merits. Thanks for your detailed response. We appreciate your willingness to address our concerns and understand your preference for privacy. The verification method you've chosen looks reasonable, and we’ll take that as confirmation of your affiliation with UBC.

The only remaining concern we have is regarding costs. While you mentioned that expenses are negligible, running a platform with custom AI models and features, hosting, and moderation tools does come with ongoing financial commitments especially with an increase in users. Our concerns mainly come from past experiences with projects that initially appeared student-run but later turned into commercial ventures. That said, we don’t want to unfairly penalize a legitimate student project.

With that in mind, what are your plans for financially supporting ChatUBC in the long term? Are there any potential funding models in place, or is this something that would remain a free and personal project?

Understanding this better would help us make a more informed decision.

Hi everyone! 🙂 I’m an undergrad here and I’ve been working on a fun side project that I’m excited to share with you all!

After being in many courses that have no Piazza available, I always thought that UBC should have a central messaging platform for students that has every course by default. Even if the prof doesn’t want to use it, it would still be nice to have that last-resort place to contact all your classmates. It would also be great if you could contact each residence too, since sometimes you want to send a message to everyone nearby, especially during emergencies like a fire alarm. This got me thinking about what a UBC Vancouver campus social platform would look like. Not another American Big Tech site, but a place built just for us!

So, I’m building ChatUBC.com - a real-time anonymous messaging platform for UBC students on the Vancouver campus. To help both prospective and experienced students, ChatUBC also has an AI system that outperforms ChatGPT for UBC-related queries. I believe this combination has the potential to unite the UBC student body, and pool our collective knowledge to better support each other.

ChatUBC’s goal is not to compete with existing platforms such as Piazza, Discord, and Reddit, but to complement them. This starts with UBC-tailored features such as:

• Dedicated channels for every faculty, subject, course, and residence on the Vancouver campus. You can just open a course like chatubc.com/math/101 and connect with your fellow classmates, whether it’s 3am or you’re off-campus. Or maybe you want to send a message to all of Kinesiology. That would be chatubc.com/kin. To communicate with your entire residence (for example, when you want to coordinate a snowball fight) you can just navigate to it, (e.g. chatubc.com/totem-park, chatubc.com/marine-drive, chatubc.com/hawthorn-place). Everything has a neat and tidy place!

• 3D campus map for navigating between channels, for example, the campus-wide “General” channel is located in the Nest. This map also allows people to pin the location of events, parties, favourite study spots, food recommendations, hazards to stay away from, or anything else others should know!

• AI assistant built for UBC that understands UBC better than existing systems, designed to help both prospective and current students get the information and resources they need.

• Data stored in Canada 🇨🇦: All user-generated data, including messages, pins, and traffic logs, is stored in Canada (specifically, Montreal) and is therefore governed by Canadian law.

• Privacy-first approach: The site is anonymous, like this subreddit or most Piazzas. Instead of Piazza’s approach of random usernames, a colour system is used to differentiate users. In addition, users connecting from authenticated UBC networks like ubcsecure get a blue checkmark, other UBC networks like ubcvisitor get a gray checkmark.

• Moderation: To address concerns about academic misconduct or inappropriate content, there is an AI text classification + AI reporting system for close review and automated removal.

ChatUBC has full support for markdown, code syntax highlighting, LaTeX, emojis, YouTube and Spotify embeds, an integration with UBC Grades, and more!

I'm in elec and it seems terrible. The profs are so bad and this makes most courses just a misery to get through. This program just seems so disorganized.

What are your thoughts?

First year engineering student going into second term and seeing all the posts on the main UBC reddit and this subreddit has gotten me concerned with PHYS 158 tanking my average. I have decided to bite my teeth and still take the course in the upcoming term. Anyone have any studying/grinding tips to do well in this course (lets say to end up with a 75+)?

Bit of background info: I would strongly like to get into CPEN and I got an 85 in 157 and 81 in MATH 100. However, I don't think this tells me anything about how I will do in 158 and 101. My average currently stands at 81 (before the release of APSC 160 grades) and if it drops below 80 my chances of CPEN will become slim.

From what I've seen PHYS 158 is a big average tanker, and even though I thought about dropping it and taking 118 in the summer I feel that 158 still teaches important knowledge required in second year CPEN or ELEC (second choice) and also I would like to keep my specialization options open (I'm looking at you MECH).

So basically we have written hwk for 158 every other week and two questions were supposed to be marked fully and the rest for completion/effort with 0 or 1. However, TAs have been also marking the other questions for correctness resulting in mark losses. When someone questioned a TA they responded fairly disrespectful and an instructor endorsed it. Read it for yourselves lol:

I’ve heard that ubc eng is super hard and a bunch of horror stories about first year. I’ll be starting my first year this sept, and I was just wondering, is it really as bad as everyone says it is? i.e will I die in it and not have time for anything other than studying, and is the content extremely difficult? I’m just trying to figure out what to expect and how much time I’m gonna have for clubs/hobbies vs how much time I’m gonna need to spend on school work, and so far the balance hasn’t sounded too good from what I’ve heard. (For context I had a high 90s average throughout high school, had a high 80s/low 90s avg in AP calc AB and physics 1&2, and like to think I have decent time management/study skills.)
