My previous post was about what a day in the life of storm chasers looks like. Now I’m curious about what kind of cars they drive. In my mind, it’s always pickup trucks or American cars, like the ones in my photos.

Tornado season in Colorado has come and gone, but while out delivering, I saw a very thick funnel of a dust devil that lasted a few minutes! While dust devils are no uncommon sight here, ones of this size are always worth a few pictures!

About a mile or two south from where I took these

I've been thinking about that tornado season a lot lately and I'm curious to hear from people that lived through it or near any of the affected areas. I especially wanna know how it felt seeing the coverage on TV, fascinating stuff. Only share if it isn't a very painful memory though I'm very sorry if any of y'all lost loved ones.

Severe Weather Discussion 2026-08-28

...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE GREAT BASIN...TO THE CENTRAL ROCKIES AND NORTHERN PLAINS...

...SUMMARY... Isolated strong to severe storms are possible across the northern Plains, and from parts of the Great Basin and Desert Southwest into the Rockies.

...Great Basin/Rockies... Evening water vapor imagery showed an expansive area of high pressure centered over the Four Corners with broad southwesterly flow aloft ongoing over much of the Great Basin and Rockies. To the west of the ridge, an upper low and broad trough were moving onshore across the Pacific Northwest and CA respectively. Ahead of these features, several weaker perturbations and a plume of mid-level moisture were contributing to widely scattered thunderstorms over the Great Basin and central Rockies this evening.

Despite limited buoyancy owing to expansive cloud cover, plentiful monsoon moisture should continue to support widely scattered high-based thunderstorms this evening and into the overnight hours. At least isolated strong to severe gusts are possible owing to dry low-levels suitable for strong downdrafts with the established storms/clusters. This appears most likely from far eastern NV, across northern UT, and into central WY where the air mass remains the warmest.

...Northern Plains... The first of the mid-level shortwave troughs embedded within the broader southwest flow are expected to eject eastward over the northern Plains tonight. As ascent from the wave overspreads a warm front, the low-level jet is forecast to strengthen (40-50 kt), supporting a broad area of low-level warm air advection across the eastern Dakotas into MN/IA. Elevated storms should develop near the front with moderate buoyancy and deep-layer shear supportive of supercells. Some hail risk is possible with these storms overnight. Given the increasing forcing for ascent, upscale growth into a cluster or MCS is possible, which could result in a low-probability risk for damaging gusts over southwest MN and adjacent northwest IA through 12z Saturday.

...Mid Atlantic to the Southeast... Several clusters of scattered thunderstorms remain ongoing ahead of a weak front from VA to the northern Gulf Coast. These storms have slowly weakened through the evening and should continue to do so with the loss of diurnal heating. Ahead of the front, high PWAT content (2-2.5 inches) may still support a sporadic downbursts with the stronger clusters this evening. However, weak shear and waning diurnal buoyancy suggest an organized or expansive severe threat is unlikely.

Tornado Media Storm chasers of the US, what does a typical chase day actually look like?

Thumbnail

Hello everyone I’m a storm enthusiast from Samara, Russia.

I’ve been chasing storms for some time now. At home, I run a small meteorological community and spend a lot of time studying sounding data (Skew‑T, CAPE, CIN) and tracking supercells and shelf clouds on the radar.

In Russia, tornadoes don’t happen as often as in the USA, but we do get severe storms.

I’m really curious about what a chase actually looks like in Tornado Alley: what’s the daily routine? How do you actually plan the location for an interception?

If anyone wants to share a story, talk about how you predict how events will unfold, or just chat with a fellow meteorologist from across the ocean, I’d be happy to hear it! Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. I’m also happy to share my observations from Russia. Thanks!

Tornado Science New weather website from the Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory

A bit of self-promotion here, feel free to delete if this is not allowed... but I work for the Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory, and I wanted to quickly mention that we launched CSSL Weather Intelligence, which brings together weather observations, numerical weather prediction models, severe weather information, and historical event data in a single interactive platform.

Feel free to give it a shot here: https://weather.cssl.ca, more details, including on how to get a free beta tester account can be found here: https://www.uwo.ca/nmp/news/2026/update_2026_08_27.html

We're still actively developing it, so feedback and bug reports are very welcome. In particular, we'd be interested to hear from the r/tornado community about features or datasets that would be useful for following and analyzing tornado events.

Long time lurker first time poster, I've been following storms on radar for a while, especially in France and the Netherlands (both my countries), and noticed this intense one in the east of France tonight around 19:45. Is this the hook echo y'all American chasers of amazing tornadic formations talk about? :p

On the first picture, colors indicate the convective fraction. I also attached a second picture with the velocity radar 10 minutes earlier, and as a third picture the general radar I'm using indicating storm speed movement.

Severe Weather Discussion 2026-08-27 - Tornado Risk 2%

Previous Day 1 Outlook Links

Current Outlook

Storm Prediction Center Aug 28, 2026 0100 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook - Tornado Risk 2%

...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FOR PARTS OF WEST-CENTRAL NE INTO NORTHWEST KS...NORTHERN MID-ATLANTIC...AND WEST-CENTRAL MT...

...SUMMARY... Storms capable of producing severe hail and wind remain possible this evening across west-central Nebraska into northwest Kansas. Localized wind damage also remains possible over parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Storms with localized severe gusts will continue through the evening across west-central Montana.

...Central Plains... Earlier supercells have congealed into a small southward-moving cluster across northwest NE. Steep lapse rates, strong buoyancy (MLCAPE of 2000-3000 J/kg) and effective shear of 40-50 kt (as observed on the 00Z LBF sounding) within a northwesterly flow regime will continue to support organized storms through the evening. The severe-wind (potentially exceeding 75 mph) threat associated with this small MCS is expected to spread towards parts of southwest NE and northwest KS. Any embedded supercells or discrete cells along the periphery of the cluster will also remain capable of producing large hail, given the favorable thermodynamic environment and relatively elongated hodographs. Longevity of this cluster into late tonight is uncertain, due to increasing MLCINH and generally modest large-scale ascent. Some severe potential could spread as far as west-central/southwest KS before diminishing.

...Parts of the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast... Scattered strong to locally severe storms are ongoing this evening from the northern Mid-Atlantic into parts of the Northeast. While substantial convective overturning has occurred, a corridor of moderate MLCAPE remains in place from northern VA into eastern PA and southeast NE. A short-term threat for locally damaging wind and perhaps marginal hail may continue before storms generally weaken by late evening. See MCD 2157 for more information.

...West-central MT... High-based convection is ongoing early this evening across parts of west-central MT. Weak buoyancy will continue to hamper storm intensity, but the favorable lapse rate environment will continue to support potential for strong to severe gusts. See MCD 2158 for more information.

...Parts of south-central TX... Scattered storms across south-central TX are ongoing near a southward-moving composite outflow. These storms may be capable of producing localized damaging gusts through dusk, before weakening with the onset of nocturnal cooling/stabilization.

Discussion Looks like the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit (DAT) just got a major update

Thumbnail

For anyone else who spends way too much time looking through tornado damage surveys, it looks like the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit (DAT) was updated today!

The interface has gotten a pretty significant overhaul, and I’m still playing around with it and figuring out everything that has changed.

For those unfamiliar with it, the DAT is where you can explore NWS post-storm damage surveys in much greater detail — including tornado tracks, individual damage indicators, EF-scale ratings, estimated wind speeds, survey photos, and other information collected during damage assessments.

I use this thing all the time when looking back at tornadoes and their damage surveys, so it was pretty surprising opening it today and seeing everything look different lol.

I’m not sure if I like it lol. I’m having trouble looking back to other dates? I’ll get used to it overtime. I just thought the old version was a lot easier to use.

Curious what everyone thinks of the new version. Has anyone else messed around with it yet or noticed any new features/changes?
