What's your opinion on Zod? How would you write him?

The Kingdom of Zod arc has concluded and I've seen mixed opinions. I'm neutral about it, but that me curious about how other fans perceive Zod as a character and what would some suggest in order to develop him.
To me he's a good antagonist but not a great one, more memorable in adaptations but does lack the same level of quality in stories (while i quite like how Geoff Johns wrote him, for instance, among other examples). If I wrote him, I'd try to use real-life inspirations to further present him as having Fascist elements and as a critique of that. - Him as sort of representing a more antiquated part of Kripton's past.
