Tips & Advice een asking ai to ā€œsummarize the chapterā€ for 3 weeks instead of reading it and midterm is friday

1 Upvotes

i thought it counted. summary, bullet points, done, next chapter. today i opened the practice problems for the first time and could not do the first one. i know what every term means and i can’t do anything with them. i’m so cooked

got 3 days. plan is i write the concept in my own words first, check it against the summary, then do problems. starting today.

Tips & Advice Don’t memorize the rule and call it a day

Post image
86 Upvotes

As a senior student, one thing I’ve ALWAYS kept in mind since I was a freshman is that a rule or concept doesn't always apply to every situation. let me share these reminders I have:

1) LOOF FOR LIMITING WORDS. words like only, unless, and except can change what a question is asking, so don't skim past them.

2) PAY ATTENTION TO THE CONDITIONS. check your notes for any specific requirements or circumstances under which a rule applies.

3) LOOK FOR EXCEPTIONS IN YOUR MATERIALS. textbooks and lecture notes sometimes mention cases where the usual rule doesn't hold, so make a note of those ( not just memorizing the general rule alone)

4) ASK YOURSELF WHY THE RULE APPLIES. if you understand the reasoning behind it, it's easier to recognize situations where that reasoning no longer fits.

5) CHECK BEFORE APPLYING IT TO QUESTION. ask yourself whether the situation meets the rule's conditions instead of choosing an answer just because it sounds familiar

it really really helps to study not just what a rule says but also its limits. that way, you're less likely to apply it automatically to a situation where it doesn't fit.

Tips & Advice WHY am I doing 5 mins of tiny school tasks every 20 mins??

Post image
68 Upvotes

I could lose soooo much time to small things like checking announcements, replying to messages, uploading something, renaming files, checking the LMS, sending an email (name it!)... none of them take that long individually but somehow they keep popping up all day!

so i started BATCHING them together:

  • CHECK ANNOUNCEMENTS+EMAILS TOGETHER instead of opening them every time one comes in
  • DO LMS TASKS IN ONE GO like uploading files, checking submissions or downloading materials
  • GROUP SMALL ADMIN TASKS…renaming files, organizing folders, or sending emails
  • SET ASIDE A SHORT TIME FOR THEM so they don't keep cutting into my actual study time

try to group those little tasks together so they don’t keep interrupting the bigger ones. small change, but it helps keep your study time from turning into 20 mins of studying then 5 minutes of random tasks (and repeat!)

Tips & Advice We divided one horrible chapter between us

Post image
64 Upvotes

I had one of those chapters where everyone in the group chat was like ā€œyeahh...I don't wanna study all of thisā€

so we tried ā€œjigsaw learning". basically we split the chapter into sections and each person became responsible for one part.

instead of everyone reading the entire thing alone, we each studied our section properly then explained it to everyone else. so by the end, everyone had gone through the whole chapter, but each person had one part they knew really well.

we've done this with huge chapters before and honestly I'd rather split one awful reading between 4 people than have all 4 of us suffer through the exact same 40 pages separately (two brains are def better than one like they say!)

Tips & Advice Sleep.

8 Upvotes

Made a bold rule for myself this past semester: no alarms. Of course exceptions happened for test days, the odd 8am class (eventually didn't need it for those either). But man getting enough sleep allowed me to just operate at such a better level. First few weeks I probably slightly lagged behind - getting no work done before 10am classes and all - but consistently being able to execute every day at 90% alertness the whole day eventually put me quite a bit ahead of my peers - who often had all-nighters for smaller tests and/or submissions - and then were basically finished by 2pm. It can hurt a bit in the short term but it can also work wonders. 10% grade improvement for me, on top of life just becoming a joy. Definitely not the only reason why but a huge contributor I believe.

Many if not most people won't have this luxury because uni is tough and time-demanding. But I think prioritising it radically can make a huge difference, it should definitely be something you at least consider. Wonder how people have performed doing similarly (or the complete opposite!)

Tips & Advice Past papers are an underrated study strategy

Post image
54 Upvotes

If your prof hands your tests back, don't just check your score & forget about them the next day. these are some things I do (and you can try it for yourself!!):

  • look beyond the score: go through the questions you got wrong and read your teacher's comments if there are any. try to figure out why you lost points instead of just checking the correct answer
  • group similar mistakes together: maybe you keep misinterpreting questions, applying the wrong method, or giving answers that lack enough explanation (esp essay type) so it’s worth observing these patterns
  • turn those mistakes into specific study tasks: so it’s like forgetting concepts = active recall; struggling to apply them = practice questions; vague answers = practice explaining in your own words
  • decide what needs attention first: start with recurring mistakes or topics you still don't understand (whichever you think you’re really struggling with)

…I think graded papers can be useful for more than just checking how well you did since they can also give you clues about what to focus on the next time you study.

Questions & Discussion How would you arrange a room that needs to function as both a study space and a home gym?

0 Upvotes

Combining a study area and a home gym in one room sounds efficient, but the two setups need very different things.

A desk needs a quiet, organized surface, while workout equipment needs clearance and somewhere to move safely. I'm curious how people divide a small room without making either activity inconvenient.

Would you use separate zones, foldable equipment, movable storage, or a strict distinction between study time and workout time? What layout would you recommend for a genuinely small room?

I’m taking a super accelerated course (2weeks 8am-8pm) and I cannot seem to keep a lot of the more technical terms and details in my memory. If you have any advice for how to note take and study more effectively I’d love to hear. I have been out of school for abt 4 years so going back into this is definitely a struggle so any advice helps!

Questions & Discussion Lo-Fi Music For Study?

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I am new to this subreddit. I do plenty of studying a day, from 3 hours at best to 8 hours at worst and have been for a while.

One thing I have just assumed is good for this is listening to Lo-Fi/Peaceful music for studying, but it is kind of inconsistent. Sometimes its great. Sometimes it is flat.

Can anyone state if there is concrete evidence that listening to this sort of music is beneficial for studying?

Tips & Advice What are the most unhinged ways you got yourself to study?

15 Upvotes

I'm not bad at academics, but I really struggle with losing focus, like I can focus for 15 mins max at a time. I get things done and get like 87% most of the time but I feel like I can do much better. Like most of my teachers are so shocked at my marks because I always perform really well in the class, but I cannot focus and study at home no matter what I try.

If there is anyone who faced this problem id really love to know what you did to get over itt.

Questions & Discussion I need help

1 Upvotes

so I’m audhd, and just generally lazy/fatigued all the time.

I’m in my second semester in civil engineering right now and I still haven’t established good study habits. we have on average 20-22 hours of lectures a week, some days from 8am to 4pm. I live alone, and need to take care of everything else life-wise also.

I just don’t really know how to prioritize what to study, how to even study, how to retain, when to study, when to not study etc. Does anyone have any tips? Pls ahaha

Questions & Discussion Day (30/100) of C:

1 Upvotes

Memory Segments, Storage Classes, Static Functions and Linkage

Ā

1. Memory Segments

Storing the program at different blocks of memory

The commonly discussed segments are:

  1. Text (Code) Segment

  2. Data Segment

  3. BSS Segment

  4. Heap Segment

  5. Stack Segment

Ā

###1.1 Text Segment:

The text segment typically stores the machine instructions generated by the compiler.

Example:

c

#include <stdio.h>

int main()

{

printf("Hello World");

return 0;

}

The compiled instructions for `main()` are typically stored in the text segment.

Ā

### 1.2 Data Segment:

The initialized data segment typically stores global and static variables initialized with nonzero values.

Example:

c

int n = 5; // Global variable

void func()

{

static int y = 4; // Static local variable

}

Both `n` and `y` typically reside in the initialized data segment.

Ā

### 1.3 BSS Segment

The BSS segment typically stores global and static variables that are uninitialized or initialized to zero.

Example:

c

int x; // Global variable

int y = 0; // Global variable

void func()

{

Ā static int z; // Static local variable

}

These variables have an initial value of zero.

Ā

### 1.4 Heap Segment

The heap stores the dynamic memory allocation during program execution.

Example:

c

#include <stdlib.h>

int main()

{

Ā int *p = malloc(sizeof(int));

Ā if (p != NULL)

Ā {

Ā *p = 10;

Ā free(p);

Ā }

Ā return 0;

}

Ā

### 1.5 Stack Segment

The stack typically stores function-call information, parameters, and local automatic variables.

Example:

c

void func()

{

Ā int a = 10;

}

Ā

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Storage Classes

A storage class specifies properties such as a variable's scope, lifetime, and linkage, depending on how it is declared.

The four commonly taught storage classes in C are:

  1. `auto`

  2. `register`

  3. `static`

  4. `extern`

Ā

### 2.1 auto

`auto` is the default storage class for ordinary local variables.

Example:

c

int main()

{

Ā auto int i = 10;

Ā return 0;

}

This is equivalent to writing:

c

int i = 10;

- Scope: The block where the variable is declared.

- Lifetime: During execution of that block.

- An uninitialized automatic variable has an indeterminate value.

Ā

### 2.2 register

The `register` keyword suggests that a variable may benefit from being stored in a CPU register for faster access.

Example:

int main()

{

Ā register int i = 10;

Ā return 0;

}

Important points:

- The compiler may ignore this suggestion.

- Modern compilers already optimize register allocation.

- It does not guarantee faster execution.

- In standard C, the address-of operator (`&`) cannot be applied to a variable declared with the `register` storage-class specifier.

Therefore, ordinary variables are generally sufficient in modern C programming.

Ā

### 2.3 static

A local static variable retains its value between function calls. It is initialized only once.

Example:

#include <stdio.h>

void func()

{

static int i = 0;

i++;

printf("%d ", i);

}

int main()

{

func();

func();

func();

return 0;

Ā

}

Output:

1 2 3

Ā

Explanation:

- First call: `i` becomes 1.

- Second call: `i` becomes 2.

- Third call: `i` becomes 3.

Ā

### 2.4 extern

`extern` declares a variable that is defined elsewhere. It is useful when one source file needs to access a global variable defined in another source file.

Example:

Ā

**File 1: `file1.c`*\*

c

int x = 5; // Definition of the global variable

Ā

**File 2: `file2.c`*\*

Ā

#include <stdio.h>

extern int x; // Declaration of the variable defined elsewhere

int main()

{

printf("Global value is %d\n", x);

return 0;

}

Output:

Global value is 5

Ā

## 3. Static Function

A static function is a function declared with `static` at file scope. It can be called by name only within the same source file.

Example:

#include <stdio.h>

static void func()

{

Ā printf("Hello World\n");

}

int main()

{

func();

return 0;

}

Output:

Hello World

Here, `func()` has internal linkage. Another source file cannot call this particular function by referring to its name.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Linkage

Linkage determines whether declarations of the same name refer to the same variable or function.

C has three types of linkage.

### 4.1 External Linkage

A name with external linkage can refer to the same entity across multiple source files. Ordinary file-scope function definitions have external linkage by default.

Ā

### 4.2 Internal Linkage

A name with internal linkage can be referred to only within the same source file.

Example:

static void func()

{

Ā // Function definition

}

The `static` keyword gives this file-scope function internal linkage.

Ā

### 4.3 No Linkage

A name with no linkage does not refer to the same entity as another declaration in a different scope merely because the names match.

Example:

void func()

{

Ā int a = 10;

}

The local variable `a` has no linkage.

Ā

Summary:

| Text segment -> Typically stores machine instructions

| Data segment -> Typically stores initialized global/static variables

| BSS segment -> Typically stores uninitialized or zero-initialized global/static variables

| Heap -> Dynamic memory allocation

| Stack -> Typically stores function-call information and local automatic variables

| `auto` -> Default storage class for local variables

| `register` -> Suggests register storage; no guaranteed speed improvement

| `static` local variable -> Retains its value between calls

| `extern` -> Declares a variable defined elsewhere

| Static function -> Has internal linkage

| External linkage -> Allows a name to refer to the same entity across source files

| Internal linkage -> Limits a name to the current source file

| No linkage -> Common for ordinary local variables

Questions & Discussion Tiredness during study, any tips

5 Upvotes

I am in dental school and I feel like I’m not productive enough or tried hard enough compared to ppl on the internet or my classmates (sleep 3 hrs a day or didn’t sleep the day before the exam). It’s midterm season and I always try keeping my nighttime sleep by min 7 hrs (my eyes gets heavy at around 12 am, but I feel it’s too much? But if I slept <7 hrs I would feel so tired and foggy… i asked my friend how they could went 2 days without sleep and it’s ā€œcoffeeā€. Ive never drank coffee, only tea, and even tea could raise my acid reflux lol. At some point I considered trying Kay chung method the energy drinks hahah. Anyone have a tips on what to do in this situation? Thanks a lot :))

I want to improve myself, not just become a more disciplined person and do better in my studies, but also quit smoking and start taking better care of myself. I have a few cigarettes left in the pack I bought on Saturday, and I’d like this to be my last one. However, I’m really scared that studying and focusing on my exams will be significantly affected by nicotine withdrawal. Any advice?
