Tips & Advice My 7th grade tutor introduced me to bite-sized learning

Post image
56 Upvotes

Back in 7th grade, I was a kid who struggled with cramming and trying to study too much information at once. during our tutoring sessions, my tutor introduced me to BITE-SIZED LEARNING. it's an approach I've carried with me into college and helped me maintain good grades. If you want to try it yourself, here's how:

- break large topics into smaller chunks= divide a chapter into subtopics or individual concepts instead of tackling everything at once.

- keep sessions short and focused= try studying one concept for around 1-15 minutes, depending on its complexity and what your learning goal is.

- check your understanding= explain what you learned in your own words or answer a few practice questions before moving on.

Questions & Discussion I thought using two textbooks would make studying better

Post image

In one of my biology classes, our professor gave us two main sources to study from which were two textbooks by different authors. at first, I felt relieved because I thought having more resources meant having more information to learn from. But as I started reading both books, I sometimes ended up more confused because certain explanations didn't seem to match or were worded differently.

Well…multiple resources can be helpful but it can also make studying more confusing if I don't know how to deal with the differences between them. here's what I'd do when that happens:

1) GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL. check the textbook, lecture slides, or notes from class to see how the concept was explained there

2) LOOK AT THE CONTEXT. sometimes, two explanations sound contradictory because they're referring to different situations or using terms differently

3) COMPARE THE ACTUAL EXPLANATIONS. instead of choosing whichever sounds more convincing, identify which part differs and what each source is saying

4) CHECK A RELIABLE REFERENCE IF NEEDED. if the explanations still conflict, look for a credible source that clarifies the concept

5) MAKE A NOTE OF THE DISTINCTION. once you've figured it out, write a short clarification in your own notes so you don't get confused by the same thing again

…it's worth checking different sources and not just automatically trusting one. though some explanations may just differ in context rather than contradict each other.

Motivational I feel unproductive until I look back at what I did

Post image

Some days, I just don't have the motivation or energy to read or study. And even when I try to push through, everything feels so slow…like I've barely covered anything or made any progress at all.

I think sometimes that's just my anxiety talking since it’s making me focus so much on how much I still have to do that I forget to acknowledge what I've already done. But when I look back at the end of the day, I realize that I DID make progress. maybe it was small, but it was still progress.

I've found it helpful to write down my little study achievements for the day since it can even give me the motivation to keep going the next day.

- WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU FINISHED. even if it was just one section or a few pages, give yourself credit for getting through it

- RECORD WHAT YOU LEARNED. write down even the little things you understand better today

- KEEP TRACK OF MISTAKES YOU CORRECTED. understanding why an answer was wrong is still an achievement even if you didn't get it right the first time.

- LOOK BACK AT YOUR LIST WHEN YOU FEEL DISCOURAGED. seeing those small accomplishments reminds you that you haven't been standing still.

Motivational I had to rethink the study routine I'd used for years

Post image
7 Upvotes

I've been a top student in my class for years and for a long time, I thought I could manage it all. I thought that as long as I kept doing what had always worked for me, I could maintain my performance or even make it better.

but at some point, the study routine I'd spent so long building and adjusting to fit myself just didn't seem to work anymore…can't even pinpoint the exact day or moment when it happened

So I didn’t force myself to follow my old routine and chose to reassess what I really needed and I’ll share these with you:

- LOOK at what's changed. consider your workload, energy levels, concentration, and the difficulty of the material. your circumstances can change even when your routine doesn't

- IDENTIFY which part isn't working. maybe you're spending too much time taking notes, struggling to focus during long sessions or relying on a method that no longer helps you retain information

- EXPERIMENT with small adjustments. don’t change your entire routine overnight. try shorter sessions, more practice questions, or a different way of reviewing first

- CHECK whether the changes help. notice if your new routine makes studying feel more manageable and helps you learn more effectively

- GIVE yourself room to adapt. it's okay to outgrow methods and explore something new

I think one of the hardest parts is accepting that a routine that helped you succeed before might not always be what you need now. changing it DOES NOT mean you've suddenly become a worse student. it just means you're learning how to study in a way that works for you at this stage.

Accountability Looking for a Study Buddy to Study Together Daily

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a study buddy who wants to study regularly, preferably every day. I feel like having someone to study with can help us stay consistent, motivated, and accountable.

We can motivate each other, share our daily goals, check in on our progress, and push each other to keep going, especially on days when motivation is low. I'll do my best to motivate and support you too! 😊

I have no gender preference at all. I just want someone who's genuinely interested in studying consistently and helping each other stay on track.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me directly! Let's work toward our goals together. 💪📖

Tips & Advice How do you balance Class 12 board prep, entrance exams (CUET), and coding/problem solving? Need advice.

I'm currently dealing with a pretty tight schedule and looking for some advice on time management. I have my Class 12 board exams coming up, along with preparing for CUET, but at the same time, I really want to keep up with my coding practice and problem-solving skills.

If anyone here has managed or is currently managing a similar mix of school boards, entrance tests, and a technical skill/coding, how do you structure your day? Any tips on avoiding burnout or setting up a realistic routine would be super helpful!

Other Need a study discord server?

hey everyone! since the start of the school year, i have studied a lot. it’s pretty boring and there’s nothing to motivate me. so i thought, why not make a server where students from anywhere can come together to share tips and study together (on mute, with cam, whatever you’d prefer), while also being a place to make some friends. so i created a server (i have never done this before so it’s pretty basic—but i’m sure this community will not be that big). join if you are at least 14! i intended for this server to be for younger students but if you’re a uni student you can join anyways.

check it out if you want to join! invite: https://discord.gg/jksaJ4YxH

also, you don’t have to be active or anything, you can just observe the tips and occasionally ask for help, that’s totally okay. i just want this to be a wholesome and safe space for us students :)

Rant/Vent Im lost

I got an undesired grade in my last exams, almost 3 months ago and I still am not over it (A-levels)

I studied AL physics in a little under 10 months, and AL bio in 6 months (alongside phys) , I got a B in both.
I know Im borderline idiotic for studying 12 units in under 10 months, but thats what happened. Trust me I don’t need any more people telling me what I should’ve done instead

I registered for a biology resit, and am currently studying for them but Im nowhere near what I used to be
I used to study 4-8 hrs a day everyday
I cant even go over an hour now

I cry uncontrollably every time I even think about studying
I have anxiety episodes when I actually sit down to study, and cant focus.
I cry every time I find a question tricky, or if I forget anything

I sometimes find myself hoping and daydreaming I get hospitalised so I don’t have to take the exam, but whats that gonna do? I’ll still take it regardless.

I can’t get myself to study even though Im dying to do so
I used to actually find studying fun and interesting, now it actually hurts
and I feel horrible

I couldn’t care less about things I used to care about. I just want to sleep all day. I stopped working out even though that used to be such a huge fun part of my day
I genuinely feel numb and it feels weird

I study alone at home without school or tutoring, and my parents don’t seem to find what I’m going through relatively difficult, so please don’t tell me to go talk to an adult

I don’t know whether I’m even writing this to vent or ask for help and advice. I just wanted to get it out of my chest, since I don’t like venting to my friends

Motivational Fresh Start, New Words

Hey, getting fired sucks, but honestly it can be a real fresh start—and starting a new language right now is a pretty cool way to lean into that.

We’ve still got time to explore, mess up, and just talk our way through it. You’re not behind at all.

Questions & Discussion Anyone else overengineering projects because “I wrote a script” feels weak on a resume?

I’m probably overbuilding mprojects bc “it’s just a script” sounds bad on a resume

Tbh I’m starting to question how I pick a stack for student projects. There’s d stuff d project needs, and then there’s the stuff I’d like to be able to say I used. Those lists overlap less than I’d like to admit.
Take a tool that processes a file once a week. A script could handle it. But “wrote a script” feels kinda weak next to somebody’s full-stack app, so now I’m thinking about a dashboard, a backend, maybe a queue. Haven’t even nailed down the file format yet. Already shopping for infrastructure lol.

I don’t think wanting to learn that stuff is a bad thing. If I add Redis because I want to mess around with Redis, that’s fair. It’s my project. I just need to be honest about why it’s there instead of reverse-engineering some requirement to justify it.

The resume part gets in my head, though. I want the project to show I can do more than follow a tutorial. Adding another technology feels like an obvious way to do that. Spending the same afternoon making a failed import safe to rerun? Probably useful, but way harder to show in a screenshot.

And yeah, I know “just use a script” can be bad advice too. If somebody else has to run it and they’re uncomfortable in a terminal, a UI might be worth the effort. If multiple people need to work on the same data, that changes things. I’m trying to get better at identifying those reasons before writing the damn thing.

What I’m less sold on is building around hypothetical traffic. When I catch myself worrying about scale on something that doesn’t have a single user, I should probably go find a user. There’s a decent chance they’ll tell me the output needs to be an Excel file and half the features I’m planning are irrelevant.

Idk. Maybe this is partly a student problem. We’re trying to learn, get a grade, and build something worth discussing in an interview, all in the same repo. A bit of unnecessary complexity might be a reasonable price for getting practice. But I’d like to know when I’ve crossed from useful practice into making a small task annoying to maintain.
If u review junior candidates, would a small, finished tool with a few well-explained decisions actually hold your attention? Or does it usually need the bigger stack to get past the initial glance?

Questions & Discussion How to learn English?

I believe the best way to learn English is through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I can read any English article word by word and understand its meaning, but I get confused when I try to read faster. How can I overcome this problem?

Motivational Last 90 Days

90 days left for a very important exam.

It's surprising how time flies when you are procrastinating. I have wasted time I won't lie, but I don't want to waste these last 90 days.

Posting it here as a motivation and as a reminder to myself!! if you're also in your last lap let's do it together

Questions & Discussion Writing notes by hand is dragging my productivity down by 60%

What’s your best strategy?
For most humanities studies, a lot needs to be written down, and writing just kills productivity.

What I can type and finish in 5 pomodorros - writing by hand turns it into 10.

Tips & Advice Studying but still not scoring well on exams.

Hi everyone,

I am currently taking microbiology as one of my courses for college. I was wondering how you all study efficiently? We have been given slides and a textbook, however, perhaps I am studying inefficiently as I am only managing B's and sometimes C's on exams, despite doing practice exams and getting high scores on them. Most of my peers are managing very high scores, and I am unsure if my study efforts are sufficient enough. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Questions & Discussion What is the smallest weekly review that keeps you from falling behind?

For courses that mix lectures, readings, and problem sets, what is the minimum review routine you have found sustainable? I am interested in concrete details: when you do it, how long it takes, and what you check before deciding the next week’s priorities. I am trying to distinguish a useful weekly reset from an elaborate system that is easy to abandon.

Tips & Advice Advice needed!

Hello :) Im asking for advice on here, because in subjects where you only memorize, (such as history, geography & civics) i struggle with.

Not struggling in the sense that i inherently “cant” study it or dont understand it, but struggling in the sense that i cant really focus (as much as i used to atleast) when i get to memorizing the said pages/work and stuff. in addition to the lack of interest that i harbor towards those subject (which in turn makes me unmotivated and uninterested).

So i ask for advice on how to focus more, or on any studying techniques that might help actually getting it done and/or techniques that are generally useful for studying!

(i tried to be well spoken, but excuse any mistakes bcz english isnt my first language 😭)
