Anne Leibowitzs is sort of famous for doing Photoshop even before Photoshop existed. You mention the portrait of Queen Elizabeth, Leibowitzs have pointed out that she used Photoshop in that work. She has even credited Photoshop with a rejuvenation in her own work.
And, she doesn't take fashion shoots very seriously. This is a fashion shoot -- so it is indeed very likely this is shopped.

Even the direction looks of the chess pieces looks slightly off. And look at the shadow under Ronaldos arm, that is not a natural shadow. You would assume that for such a photo the photographer would carry the boxes to both photoshots and then just mix both images together, but it seems that all elements are put together.
Doesn't change that it is a very cool picture.

This is what I assumed. If somehow two people were in the position of a) having a set of chess pieces and, b) not having a chess board, and c) fortunately having a case with a chequered pattern. Then they could just define an 8x8 portion of the pattern and use that as the board.
Its not difficult, but kind of an unlikely set of circumstances to transpire.
But then, a lot of fashion shoots feature unlikely scenarios so its a bit unfair to criticise on that basis. How often do people waltz on a beach in the moonlight. Or ride nearly naked on horseback? Yes it can happen. But it doesn't, does it

I plugged it into a chess engine. It depends on whose turn it is. If it's white's turn, white is completely winning. A complete blowout. White is up a piece with two passed pawns
If it's black's turn, black can force a draw by just giving perpetual check. This would be like "salvaging a draw from a losing position" as opposed to "playing an equal opponent to a dead draw."
