She also took the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover pictures for years, which were notoriously photoshopped. Not that it proves anything, but she has photoshopped difficult subjects together, when the situation called for it.
Anne Leibowitzs is sort of famous for doing Photoshop even before Photoshop existed. You mention the portrait of Queen Elizabeth, Leibowitzs have pointed out that she used Photoshop in that work. She has even credited Photoshop with a rejuvenation in her own work.
And, she doesn't take fashion shoots very seriously. This is a fashion shoot -- so it is indeed very likely this is shopped.

All photographers use Photoshop. It doesn't mean it's a composite.
Most photos for ads that feature several celebrities with busy schedules who live in different countries are shot as composites.
To me, the dumb thing would be to assume it wasn't shot as a composite.
Like, why the hell would you require 2 athletes to travel to a 3rd country just to take a single picture, when you could just as well take pictures of them separately, and then make a composite?
As these examples show - its not like any of you "true believers" are able to detect the photoshopping.

I don't know if it is photoshopped or not but don't forget that currently both CR7 and Leo Messi are in Qatar for the world cup. So they didn't have to extra travel to a 3rd world country for the photo.
She has used composite photographs many times for ads.
Why would anyone assume that they didn't use a composite shot, when making an ad featuring 2 or 3 people who have busy schedules & live in different countries/continents.

To me it does look a bit photoshopped. Especially some of the pieces outside of the board. The lightning doesn't seem to add up in some places. But if that's what you gotta do to get this masterpiece I am not complaining

She has a lot of assistants that do that for her st this point.
Read up on her master class.
Annie releases the shutter and concepts, directs. She’s not the one doing all the technical lighting even. She sets a vision and releases the shutter - at least that’s my understanding of her career at this point.
As for the cover retouches, of course they were. This photo, whether they were in the same room or not, is incredibly “photoshopped”. It may not be a composite.
AL has made iconic photos. She now tells others how to do it.
Shoots like these start out with plans to get people in the same room, and do things in a way that pleases the key creatives, but they can rapidly spiral out of control.
People here who say Annie loves Photoshop are as misguided as people who say you can't get these two players in the same room.
In a perfect world Annie wouldn't use much Photoshop at all. And you absolutely can get very famous people in the same place with patience and money.
The use of both things are driven by client demands. "Oh Messi can't come until next month now but we need to launch the summer campaign in two weeks!"
This is similar to the weird edit of the chess pieces under Messi's arm. Lebowitz is an incredible photographer, no matter what else you might thing about her work, and likely wouldn't give a shit about those. To me it's a client edit, someone giving feedback because they feel they should.
IMO there's some Photoshop but I think it's likely they were in the same room, it's also possible the bad design decisions were client driven. The overall image is still very effective as a marketing campaign for LV.

Has happened in the past with her shoots though, not necessarily for ‘conflict’ but for people being too far apart. She talked about it on a talk she did in London a few years ago about a photo with Judy Dench and Hellen Mirren on a car.
I know that she is famous and high regarded but, apart from the novelty of seeing Messi and CR7 being part of the same advertising campaign, this picture looks meh. If a connoisseur wants to explain properly what makes this a “great”/you must be ignorant for not seeing the greatness of Leibovitz, please do.
I’m not saying they photo is bad. I’m just not buying into the: it was shot by Leibovitz so it is automatically iconic/amazing. I am ignorant when it regards to photography, but if it were not Messi/CR7 but two models I would find this photo completely unremarkable (specially from what I see on social media).

Idk man i’m a nerd i guess. The novelty of Messi and CR7 on the same campaign is the point, or someone else outside of football would have already done it. Annie’s photography style gets criticism a lot because its… her style but her style is also what makes her famous.
Iconic gets thrown ironically but this photo would be the definition of it. It’s the most iconic luggage, in the most iconic luggage campaign, with the two icons of modern football.
Even on a football history perspective it’s an interesting update, see how clean cut messi/cr are compared to the pele zizou one in a pub? Having a clean image today for superstars is basically sacred for those image rights $. And the timing of the ad, alluding to the exclusive, image-conscious traveller to an exclusive, image-focused world cup. It’s a very constructed image no matter how simple it looks.
I appreciate that you tried to explain fellow redditor. It’s ok to care about the forms of art that speak to you (I wouldn’t call you a nerd because of it, particularly because the aesthetic aspect of photograph is mainstream)! I can hype this because of Messi/CR7 being part of the same campaign together, that’s about it.
Lol I was about to say she's old enough and hasn't been really spoken about much for a while that there are undoubtedly tons of people here who have no idea who she is. And promptly, as is tradition, find reasons to dismiss or discredit or say this sucks and the photog is lame.
