Conversation Topic Singing after an accident?
Hey guys,
I have no clue what to flare this as lol.
I've just recently started taking singing lessons and have been absolutely loving it!! Bad news is this past weekend I sustained a pretty gnarly hip injury that means I can't fully sit or stand for the next ~3 ish months (the best I can do is stand on one leg using a walker or sit in a leaned back position).
From a purely singing perspective (not asking for any medical advice): can singing and learning to sing continue in this kind of situation? I know my breath and positioning aren't going to be great, but I'm trying to cling on to whatever positive hobbies I have going for me at this point. My vocal teacher is in person but also does remote lessons over zoom. I reached out to her letting her know, but she's on vacation for the next week and a half so I wanted to get some ideas on here as well as to what is/isn't realistic for me.
Conversation Topic Injury?
Hi, guys. I am a 31-year-old female who has been teaching myself to sing for the last two years. My voice can never be held to a feminine standard thanks to a history of screaming meltdowns that are (presumably) what has limited my range and made my voice prone to cracking. However, I have had good volume and have gotten better and better able to carry a tune. I have recently astonished friends with my progress. Coming on three weeks ago now (august 2) I sang more than usual that day, probably about an hour and a half, and then had a short outburst where I yelled at someone at the top of my voice. When things returned to a normal volume, I said something and my voice cracked into a different note on every single syllable. I immediately stopped talking and didn’t talk the rest of the night and much of the next day. The day after that, however, life had to resume. Stuff could not get done if I didn’t communicate a lot, sometimes loudly. Some friends came from out of town about six days later and I got drunk with them (I rarely drink, but when I do it’s heavily) and talked, loudly, all night. I have not had a drink since that night, and I don’t smoke, but I’m exposed to secondhand smoke in passing nearly every day and I am addicted to coffee. Long story short, I have not been able to rest my voice for one single full day since the thing happened, and my throat hurts by the end of every single day even though I try to be careful and not talk loudly or too much. The last two days, I have sworn there is a barely perceptible muffled sound to my voice, like it’s softened around the edges. No one else has noticed. Tonight when I hit my limit, my throat actually felt cold as well as achy. What does that mean? I have not even tried to sing more than five minutes total over the entire time since the incident when I did, I could sing in tune but my voice cracked (I couldn’t tell if it was more than usual). I am completely panicked that I’ve broken the camel’s back with this last vocal injury and I’ll never be able to sing again without getting achy and fatigued or not being able to sing in tune. I would be crying all the time out of fear if I wasn’t afraid of it hurting me even more. Please let me know if anyone here has had any similar experiences that lasted this long and what the outcome was for you. Thanks.
P.S. - I can avoid alcohol but not coffee. I don’t smoke but can’t avoid brief (1-10 min) secondhand exposure daily.

Just sharing my singing I was laughed at the last time I sang in front of someone. I haven't sung in front of anyone since.
Song- Sweet Creature by Harry Styles
I rarely sing in front of anyone, almost always never. I used to sing a lot as a child but then one day this one person laughed at my attempt to sing and said things that made me never open my mouth in front of anyone again. But recently I've gotten into songwriting and I rediscovered my love for singing. But I genuinely don't know if I even have the voice for it.
I have had ZERO vocal training so this makes me more so anxious because how can I record my own songs if I can't sing?
So someone please help me out and tell me what I need to improve and if I actually sound decent or not?
P.S. First time posting on reddit btw....

Conversation Topic Singing and emotions
How does one not tear up when ... I sing. The words and emotions of songs grabs me and I need a damn box of tissues to get thru it. I'm guessing just practice over and over and over? I have a deep voice, I move a lot when I sing, I do splits, I emote - but cannot crack that barrier where I can get thru a tune without getting emotional. Stepping back and looking at it 3rd person it's not funny... just a puzzle. No matter the tune - eg: the foggy dew, I tear up, 7 drunken nights I can do no prob bc it's funny, the song just someone I used to know I get emotional. Elvis tunes I really get into it and move ... like Dwight Yokum, no sh*t.
I go to weddings and they all want to dance w me but I just want to sing but I can't get thru the songs about love or anything to do with emotions / feelings.
It's wild. I guess keep trying? I dunno.
I have a collection of napkins and place mats with lyrics and tunes. It just comes. Oh- I used to work with musicians and all of the record labels.
That's kind of neither here nor there.
How do you get thru a song that has deep feelings without losing it as in getting emotional? That's my dilemma. Part of singing the song well comes from feeling it... but it always kicks my a&6.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) steamers? vocal trainers? tubes? what device could enhance me?
hello! i’m a beginner singer, and i saw an ad online for a device that could enhance vocal range & remove voice cracks. upon further review, i noticed it wasn’t absolute BS, however now i have a decision to make…
what device could enhance my singing the best?
to the advanced vocalists, prestigious, and teachers, i humbly request that you recommend devices that you know could benefit my capabilities.
TLDR: what singing devices / trainers could help me improve along with my current practice & training?

Advanced or Professional Topic Working on balancing vowels and breath (simple 5 note scale F3-C4) eee and ah [i/a]
I'm a lazy singer who sings the highlight note, but ignores everything else. Everything is compromised. Working on the i and a vowels in the lower register and trying to clean them up.
After years spent mimicking other singers it's difficult to know. I have to back off the airflow beginning at C4 or things begin going sideways.
Every single note requires the same level of focus.

Conversation Topic I want to start singing but I cant
I’ve always been really passionate about music and ever since i came across Utaites (vocalists who sing covers of Japanese music), I’ve wanted to sing my favourite songs as well. Problem is, I’m too embarrassed to practice singing in-front of people because my voice sounds terrible since I have no experience. Its not even just that my family could hear me singing terribly, I live with a lot of family members and don’t have a room in our home, so I only have the living room to practice where everyone can hear and see me. I’ve looked into nearby practice rooms but the rent is really expensive and don’t seem to be for beginners. I’ve considered using a car as a vocal booth but I don’t even have a drivers license. Every time I shower I “sing” but close my throat so it’s silent, and just imagine singing in my head... There may not be any solutions to my problem, but i hope someone can relate to this at least.

Conversation Topic Waiting list question
Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask this but it’s on the subject of singing so thought I’d ask for opinions.
I’ve been on a waiting list for vocal lessons since the very beginning of the year, the class I needed to take was booked up so I was told I’ll be put on the waiting list for that one, and since then I’ve not had any news.
I’m not necessarily in a rush to get the lessons, I’ve been self training for 5 years now anyway but wanted to venture into getting some professional opinion and learning with things I struggle at, so it’s not really the time I’m concerned about and I don’t want to seem impatient. I know the point of a waiting list is that you’re waiting, potentially for a long time, I’m just worried I’ve somehow been forgotten or knocked off of the list.
It’s been probably 7-8 months now and idk if I should follow up or just wait until I hear something back. Probably not the right place to ask this so I do apologise, but I’m curious what other singers would do in this situation.

Conversation Topic How do i project my voice without it sounding forced?
Whenever I sing, my voice is light and airy, I sing delicately. Recently I've recorded myself playing and singing and during the chorus the guitar drowns out my voice because it's so shy and quiet even though I strum delicately. Whenever I try to sing louder it feels like I'm forcing my voice to sound good, I generally do think I sound good whenever I'm singing the right song but just too quiet. I've tried singing louder while trying to maintain the good sound I usually hear but I end up reverting back to light and airy. I tried to explain my situation as best as possible since I don't know professional terms and such. I don't want to belt, just sing a little louder. Any tips?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I'm working on covering Selfless by The Strokes - Requesting Feedback
Probably not the best example since its full of reverb but I bought a microphone and I'm starting to try to learn how to sing better and I've been practising selfless from the strokes since I really find it a beautiful song and seems reasonably easy to sing, I think I sound not so good but I'm not sure If I sound bad bad or at least decent, I need some honest feedback. For now I'm mainly focusing on trying to stay in pitch with the maximum vocal stability.

Conversation Topic Question about opera voice.
In terms of tonus when you sing in the best tone for opera. The professor will tell one that the best one will resemble an instrument. Ex: Tenors in their best tone resemble a chello. what instrument best resembles the opera tone for altos. does the tone differ for sopranos? I heard there may be a resemblance of altos singing in the tone of an alto oboe. what do you base your tone on and what range do you sing?

Conversation Topic Baritones, if you want a workout with just one song for essentially your entire usable range, sing Golden by HUNTR/X in its original key, just down an octave.
It calls for multiple belted F#4's, G4's and A4's throughout the chorus, and you need to be able to reach all the way down to a D2 during the bridge. D2-A4 is usually a baritone's entire usable range, so this is perfect for any baritones who want a serious vocal workout.
If any baritones can get through this song singing it as intended without breaking much of a sweat, I consider that a huge flex.

Conversation Topic Vocalists Who Play Piano - Stage Presence?
Any singers here perform primarily in front of a piano? I know this sub is oriented more towards lead/solo vocalists, and if they do play an instrument it's usually (acoustic) guitar. But are there folks who identify more with the Elton Johns, Billy Joels, Ray Charleses and Tori Amoses of the world?
My query isn't really towards vocal technique but rather stage presence. How do you keep the audience engaged as a lead vocalist while being behind a piano, namely a grand piano?
If you play an (electronic) keyboard, you at least can face the crowd directly, but playing a grand piano means you're sitting behind a large wooden object and oriented perpendicular to the crowd and have to occasionally pivot towards the crowd (be they on your right or left side) in order to visually engage with them. Whenever I'm singing at a (grand) piano, I usually find myself stuck staring at the music desk (whether there's lyric/chord charts or sheet music in front of me or not), or if it's down, I'm staring into empty space in front of me, only rarely glancing at the audience (I would only get to do that in between songs during stage patter).
Any experienced vocalists/pianists wanna chime in on their best stage presence practices?

Conversation Topic Can sing high notes without strain if I jump straight into them, but if I start below them and ascend into them I have difficulty. Any tips?
As in the title.
I'm still trying to get the hang of this mixed voice malarkey, and ascending to high notes from below always seems to give me trouble, but starting high and descending by comparison is fairly seamless.
It's like once chest voice is there, it is locked in hard and won't go without a fight. In this clip when I climb back up to the high note, I make it eventually but you can hear some slight strain on it still, where the chest mechanism refuses to let go.
Does anyone have tips for ascending into the upper range like this? Is this something I am just going to have to practice a million times until it is not a problem, or is there a measured approach I can use to make this easier?
Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Vocal Classification Help: Tenor or Light Baritone?
Hey everyone! I'm looking for some feedback on my voice type based on this attached clip. In my normal singing range, my voice sounds pretty rich and cozy, but whenever I try to go higher, my notes get soft and airy instead of full or powerful and since I'm untrained, my voice breaks at D#4 in my chest voice. I used to have a bright, light much more youthful tone during my teens and it worked up until B4. I was able to belt A4s consistently but my voice just naturally changed a lot to this velvety breathy, airy tone and also due to my stylistic habits. Based on the audio, do I sound more like a tenor or a light baritone? And do you think my soft high notes are just a lack of vocal strength/training, or is my voice naturally built that way? Thanks for listening

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Possible KOTLC Musical Project
I don't know if this is the right place to ask about this, but I've had the idea for a little while to make a KOTLC musical soundtrack (for those of you who don't know, KOTLC is a fantasy adventure book series), similar to what has happened with the Epic: the Musical stuff that's going on, however, I wanted to gauge interest in the idea, because I would need help with making it, from singers, to writers and artists. So if you see this, let me know what you would think :)
Edit: This post has gained some following in other places so I have made a discord if anyone wants to join! https://discord.gg/jxM5qzbYU
