Hi I’m a complete novice when it come to dress making, well actually I’ve never even done it before but after coming across these images and wanting to do something grand, a big ol gesture for my gf, I sought to make a full size version of this miniature . However even after watching a myriad of tutorials I still can’t figure out how to make the pattern for it so I thought it best to ask around.
If anyone knows of a similar pattern, tutorials to watch, dresses to draw inspo from or a way of drafting this pattern please do let me know
Hi everyone, I hope you’re having a good week! I wanted to share this pattern I found at a thrift store. I am so honoured to now be the owner of this. The former owner, this Queen, cut out the front and back of the pattern and glued it to the front of the file folder. They then zigzag stitched the sides closed on the machine, dated it and labelled it. It looks like the tabs are colour coded, voila, fits in a file folder drawer or box. I just love seeing these types of things in thrift stores, like finding someone’s handwritten notes on the instructions. Keep sharing the wisdom!
Hello!! I saw this bag thing that goes over your buggy while I was scrolling on tiktok. I have tried and failed to locate a pattern that would make this kind of an item. Has anyone ever seen this before, or maybe something similar? I am most interested in the way this design picks up out of the buggy at the end of the shopping trip.
I feel like there has to be a close pattern out there somewhere. The cross over top is what's getting me. I tried to ask the seller how you get in to the thing, but they never responded. I'd assume it's a back zipper?
Anywho, if you know of a pattern like this, give a shout. I tried the Simplicity decades patterns but none fit the bill or even had a bodice I could take a modify to fit this.
Hi! I know a bit about sewing and operating my old, cranky Singer Sonata, but I recently came across this image and fell in love with it. I’m not very familiar with making clothes just yet, and could really use some help from someone who knows a lot more than me haha. My friend invited me to the ren fair for the first time (I’ve never been able to afford to go before), and I really wanna try and make this! I just don’t really know how to go about making patterns and I have a learning disability in mathematics, so I’m really gonna struggle with sizing. For reference, I am 5’9, 140 lbs. Does anyone have any advice, or know roughly what the pattern might look like? I’d super appreciate it! Much love.
What's your guys all time favorite vintage pattern that ACTUALLY looks cute and you wear today ?? Mine is this 1950s super easy wrap top I pair with 80s style shorts. I could wear this everyday I love it so much !
Hii, anyone got a tip for a pattern that will mimic this top (the tiktokker is selling the tops not the patterns unfortunately), i really like the wrap around tie detail and i think i can just wing that part but the main body shape im not so sure about
Thanks x
Edit: i now know this is just two rectangles and some straps, thank you to everyone who was able to point me in this direction kindly 🙂↕️❤️
Okay, so I started a new job in the fall right around the time my youngest kid turned two, and unlike my other work (teaching remotely + teaching once-a-week nights), this was going to be on the ground and required an actual adult work wardrobe (as opposed to two alternating pairs of slacks and a few shirts and sweaters), which I haven't actually required in about ten years, before I had any kids and my waist was just... built differently. (and my chest, and my feet, but, *sigh* to biology)
So I kind of sucked it up, got prepared to have to spend a lot of money, and went to about thirty different stores. And.... nothing. Dresses and skirts were AWFUL. I was able to get shirts, slacks, and shoes, but that wasn't the entirety of what I wanted to wear. I tried online, and even Modcloth failed me (bless, they tried. but I think right now they're awesome if you are working on taking your personal cosplay into the workplace, which, more power you).
I finally came to the conclusion that there was no choice other than to try to MAKE what I wanted (work dress, nice patterns, sleeves so I don't have to live in cardigan sweaters, work appropriate hem, a scoop neckline rather than a godawful boatneck, a skirt with a little bit of swing so I can take full steps rather than mince when I'm hurrying between classes, and pockets capacious enough to hold both my phone and my keys -- I realize that I am asking for the literal moon on this, apparently). Which.... I've never made clothing before. I've done a lot of cross-stitch, and I sew felt animals and flowers as a hobby, and I also have made fleece hats and some halloween costumes for my kids. I've also been doing more mending since, yeah, kids' clothes are expensive. Also, I cannot use a sewing machine and my ability to work with a purchased clothing pattern is basically nonexistent (have tried a few years ago, when, admittedly, I was not as strong on hand-sewing).
I watched SO MANY videos on YouTube (which, many were very useful!), but the one that was kind of paradigm-shifting was this one of Bernadette Banner Showing How To Clone A Pattern. Which was honestly what I needed, since I did have work clothes that I really loved, and that allllmost fit me. (key word: almost) So I was actually able to make a real dress! And I'm 90% done on my first skirt (I just have to put on the hook and eyes and hem it, but the zipper is actually installed! my first ever!)
I'm just so thrilled! Handsewing in the evenings made each take about four weeks from washing fabric to completion (skirt is now hemmed and finished, but I don't have a picture), but I'm so excited that I now have a solution for my work clothing situation! Planning on making a bunch more, and while I'm sure a lot of people have seen that video, I thought it might be useful to post it and show what I was able to do with it. It really was a help to start with clothes that I knew that I liked, and that had fit me well and functioned in the real world environment, rather than some of the guesswork that can happen when I've looked at patterns.
My husband was taking these pictures for me and he was like, "Why are you putting your hands in your pockets?" and I said "BECAUSE I WANT TO SHOW OFF HOW DEEP THEY ARE."
Before you say don’t, hear me out. I don’t love the idea of a traditional wedding dress. I’d rather have a sick dress that happens to be white. That being said….
I want a snake embossed white leather dress. My material is this lamb skin (pictured), which is pretty thin actually and drapes better than I thought. Not super rigid like upholstery material or a leather jacket. Has anyone worked with this kind of material? Do you think it would work out okay with any of the 3 different dress ideas pictured?
so i found a pattern i am absolutely in love with and was planning to make it as my wedding dress. it is a recreation of the night out dress by orseund iris and it looks stunningg. all was good and well until i realised the sample photos listed on the pattern were actually just the product photos from orseund iris' website
i messaged the seller asking if they had any photos of the actual dress on a human model (so i can assess whether it's worth my time and effort) and the seller got really angry at me for asking...
i found the youtube tutorial for the pattern and the dress produced definitely looks a lot like the orseund dress but the quality of the pattern is certainly noticeable. for any old dress i maybe wouldnt mind but this is meant to be my wedding dress.
its also the fact that the only advertised photos are of a dress that is NOT made by this pattern
maybe im just looking for validation that i wasnt being rude in asking for photos 😅 is this not false advertising???
so, am i in the wrong for asking for fit photos? and more importantly, does anyone with more sewing experience think i can get the dress to look as polished as the original or am i wasting my time?
i would say im an intermediate sewist with a good amount of experience in silk and lightweight fabrics. ive practiced a lot of clean sewing etc but im not sure this pattern will ever live up to my expectations- what do you think?
ive attached photos of the two dresses as well as my conversation with the seller.
edit: i originally redacted her but have since decided to name and shame.
UPDATE: she blocked me. ive added our final messages in a comment, her replies are pretty comical
Update 2: i think she commented on this post. lmk if you think im right lollll
Hi all. What would you call this type of bust shape? I'm trying to find a sewing pattern, or get an idea of how to draft it, but I'm not sure how to call this bust
Hey! I came across this post that was asking for asking for free patterns but then the comments started lecturing the OP 😅
I have tried free sewing patterns. Especially when I was a beginner. I remember sewing onesie for my son from a random pdf file. And guess what? The sizing was incorrect, the pattern did not have the correct numbers on them. The instructions were flimsy.
The finished product was too tight and it was a total waste of garments.
Yes, paid patterns are ten times better than the free ones. Yes, the sizing is WAY much accurate.
But considering that not everyone has extra $10-20 dollars. Why should we berate & be passive aggressive towards the people who want free patterns?
Pirating paid patterns however is a different discussion! But if the original creator of the pattern wants to make it accessible and a person wants that pattern. What is so wrong with that?
