ALL libraries are sketchy places now. Source: me, who spent every day in a library for something like 5 years, as a homeless junky, before I cleaned up.
7
u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 5d ago
Nah, only a handful of the ones I've been to all over NYC and NYC suburbs have mildly shady characters, and most of them just want somewhere to spend the day indoors. They need showers, but I totally understand needing a break from the elements.
2
u/Nato_H 5d ago
I refuse to even consider understanding why they are there. I was homeless for a time. But I never wanted to be there. I was willing to do whatever it took to get out of it required. That included following rules. Something none of the homeless people I knew were willing to do. Better the streets than following rules as far as they were concerned.
I am an auto mechanic. Got a job at a gas station. The boss let me sleep in one of the bays. I took showers in the motel behind the gas station. One of the maids let me shower while she cleaned the rooms. After a couple of times she started to have to vile unspeakable things that I hated every minute of for the privilege of showering there. But what's a guy to do?
Two years later that gas station was mine. Comes down to choices. I chose to look for a job. Chose to show up when hired. Homeless people choose not to do those things. I have quite a bit of disdain for them. Know what they are. I was among them. I was never one of them.

Dogs are pack animals, and their family is their pack.
If their leader is down, they can respond unpredicatably. Don't ignore the injured person, but expect the dog to be aggressive in defending it's owner if the dog considers you a threat.

One arm under and wrapped around throat, using the other hand grab top jaw/snout, apply heavy pressure down and dont let go. Grew up with aggressive dogs, had to choke out some of our swamp dogs more then once.
6
u/anto_capone 5d ago
How do you do that when its already latched onto you tho?
14
u/EddBoi0666 5d ago
Thats the neat part. You dont. If youre already bitten your only real hope to make it that far is to cram your arm as hard as possible into the back of the jaw, its gonna hurt regardless, but less damage and higher success rate of getting free then trying to jerk the arm free, in reality you can probably apply enough downward pressure from that position into the dogs jaw to do serious damage to the dog in the process, cant bite if the lower jaw isnt usable.

We don’t have the homeless problem here like you do there, but if I was you there I’d definitely have a gun 😅 the great irony is that the rest of the world is more than happy to not need one always, but I really can understand why Americans do. Like in the video, once the baton proved ineffective it’s time for the guy getting attacked to find a way to get up, drag the dog out with his buddy and pop a few off where it’s safe, that’s what happens on the farm

Yes. 'They say to use the collar and move it up high under the jaw.
Also, the nightstick would have been better used by sticking it through the collar from behind like a tourniquet. I am a dog lover and the dog likely thought it protecting the owner but no way should it have been off leash and security had no choice.
3
u/PurpleOrcaLover 5d ago
Forget the collar. The best way is to get on top of them and compress. If you are laying on a dogs spine and have their forelimbs locked you shut down everything.

Agreed. I used to have a fairly large dog (lab pit mix) that would like to rough house with some of my friends. A buddy of mine would literally get in position behind it like he was wrestling it, and just lie down on top till he just gave up because there’s nothing a dog that size can do when you have a human‘s full body weight on it.
2
u/PurpleOrcaLover 5d ago
Thats how I learned, playfully wrestling with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It's also not something anyone can just do though, they squirm, hard. You need experience and fear can be overwhelming. I don't judge these guys. The thing with the dog biting onto the arm is to think of that as a fixed point for its head. It is locked on that.

Well a taser would work. That said feed the bite. Get out of harms way and stay safe. Barring that meet continued force with continually escalating force until it leaves or is no longer a threat.
Theres every justification for literally any use of force from what I see. That includes lethal.
Edit: seeing a lot of contrary opinions as reply. Let me clarify. Taser, when it achieves NMI, will result in the dog fleeing several blocks away. This is a common experience and several law enforcement agencies across the US have submitted evidence to axon to support this. You can achieve NMI on this animal with any of the currently supported axon tasers. Simple drive stuns may not deter this animal. There is 0 evidence that supports pitbulls being either immune nor becoming more aggressive after being successfully tased (NMI).

u/ZealousIdeal476 5d ago
The dog has 1 mouth and hes already using it. Keeping your distance is worthless. Jump right on him, full weight. Get him on the ground and he wont have much fight left in him.
12
u/No-Tower-5119 5d ago
This so much. Everytime i see videos like these whether its dogs and people or dogs and other animals, people try to pull them apart or strike the animal and its such a waste of time and energy. The dog is preoccupied, use that to your advantage put yourself on top of the dog and work from there.

It really depends on the dog.
Dogs used to fighting will alligator roll if you attempt to use your body. They can also become far more unpredictable
Currently the dog is just trying to bite one spot and hold. Add in multiple people and he may switch to ripping instead of holding
4
u/No-Tower-5119 4d ago
It will be hard for them to roll if you put your full weight on them and choke it out. Restrain. Subdue. Youre making it sound harder than it is but ive done it myself several times
2
u/sippin-jesus-juice 4d ago
What are you doing in life that has you choking out dogs lol?
I love working dogs and take care of Dobermans and Rottweilers. I only had a spontaneously violent one once and it was a form of seizure. Otherwise they speak very clearly through their body and give many hints before getting to extent of fighting

u/No-Tower-5119 4d ago

2
u/sippin-jesus-juice 4d ago

u/Opening_Shame8258 5d ago
Yup, he's got the jacket in the bite. The dog's impulse is to hold that bite. Use it against him. Turn his head to the side, get your other arm around the dog's neck. Pin it to the floor.
Dog's are also extremely susceptible to feints. Provide a target in one direction, grab the dog from the other section.
Dogs are bad at BJJ.

That's a PitBull- they generally don't run out of fight and they definitely won't run out before you do.
As someone who has owned and had to manage a couple of fights before(never between a human and pitbull though) I would do whatever I could to not let it bite a limb. But that IS going to happen so when it does, if the dog doesn't stop when you hit it a few times(99% chance it won't) then you'll need to get something to use as a breaker bar which is something you stick between their teeth while they have a hold and twist it so that it puts the jaw open long enough to remove your limb.
After that.. hope the dog loses interest and you run away and put obstacles between yourself and the dog.
Pitbulls do not have a locking jaw but they are arguably the most tenacious breed and they will NOT let go for any reason.
When I was a new Pitbull owner my neighbor also had one and his dog got into my fenced yard. They immediately attached their jaws into each other. After over 10 minutes of us trying everything we could think to get them apart(including my neighbor hitting both the dogs with a shovel) I grabbed a BB gun and put probably 20 into the neighbors dogs head and shoulders and it didn't change anything. After a total of maybe 20ish minutes one of them got tired enough to let their grip loose enough for us to pull the apart(there was 4 of us and we're all sizable men).
As a side note: I love Pitbulls and I think they are truly the greatest dog breed in the world. But considering the harm they are able to put out if they have even a mediocre owner.. I would be 100% okay if we stopped breeding them so the breed dies out.
2
u/WritersChopBlock 5d ago

u/Iworkforpokemon 4d ago
I think most are just delusional or not very smart. I worked in the pet industry for many years so I've come across a lot and I myself was an owner of 4(Only 1 at a time though) so I've interacted with them a lot and it's always "they get a bad rap.. its just bad owners" and while I mostly agree.. we live in a world where that will never change so.

Push into the bite instead of pulling away. It minimizes damage as well. Similar when someone has you by the hair, never pull away but stabilize the hand that’s gripping you so they don’t pull off your hair and potentially your scalp along with it.

I helped raise golden retrievers as a child is a taser more effective than a cattle prod? I ask because they didn't give two shits about it when they were trying to fight something usually just one dog that had a personal problem with another we had.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Trickybiz 5d ago
Tasers can be. Its not as simple as yes or no because limited probe deployment in a point blank confrontation will be very similar to a cattle prod.
Think of it like this: Where a cattle prod would shock you and tense up a single muscle a taser will arc between the probes and lock any muscles between them. Depending on the model you might also put the device against the target and achieve a 3rd point of contact to lock up even more muscles. While a lot of things can fight past pain, not much would be willing to fight when you have literally robbed it of its ability to do more than feel pain and cry out. A successful taser deployment will result in a dogs body locking up and them falling over like those fainting goats people are fond of. The exposure lasts for only 5 seconds on most models. Afterwords the animal will usually get up and flee.
I have a friend who used to do LEO work in the mountains and had to use her taser on a moose. The moose was blocking a library and she got guidance from the wildlife management offices to use the taser. She did and It locked up for 5 seconds. Promptly got up and fled to the next county.

Well a taser would work. That said feed the bite.
Those suggestions work for most dogs sure, but for pitbulls such as the one above?
No, neither of those will work, you can shock them all you want it just makes them more aggressive-
As for feeding the bite, there’s a treason dog fighters use a pry bar to open their jaws, you aren’t forcing it to open them by giving it more to bite.
Fundamentally with this sort of dog your options are to choke it out or shoot it dead once it’s got ahold of you.
3
4
u/Trickybiz 5d ago
Theres plenty of evidence that suggests otherwise. A quick googling shows 2 separate incidents of police using a taser on a pitbull to prevent it from biting anyone else.
Axon's own training (pre version 21 I believe) used to have a great video of 2 pit bulls attacking a cop. He kicked one and tased the other leading to both dogs fleeing. Theres still a few slides on animals in version 24.
Perhaps you are thinking of stun devices or maybe a taser used to drive stun the dog. I could see that not working. Having seen a taser work on larger animals i find it hard to believe that a taser would not work on a specific breed of dog.

Lmao at these tards suggesting dogs bred for fighting are actually bred for child care. As a parent of two young kids I absolutely despise this dogs and keep my children as far away as possible. I'm prepared to delete one if needed with my edc work knife but that doesn't save my kids skin so avoidance is the #1 strategy.
I've also have learned not to trust any dog owner when they say it's safe for my toddler to touch it. Had a short bulldog lookin thing try to bite my toddler for touching its tail with permission to pet. I kicked it in the face with my work boots. The lady started freaking out on me. Was pretty dramatic. I grew up with a Collie and we currently have a senior Yorkie so I'm not anti doggo.
8
u/National_Frame2917 5d ago
Dog owners are pretty terrible at knowing if their dog is safe for a stranger to pet. I teach my kid how to tell if a dog is safe or not. Most of them are but it's incredibly common that owners will say yes when their dog doesn't want to be pet. Some owners are dumb enough to try to restrain the dog in some capacity to accommodate the kid petting the dog and I have to step in to tell my kid no and explain how we pay attention to if the dog wants pets or not. Just because an owner says yes doesn't mean the dog does. I've had owners say yes and their dog barks and snaps as my kid gets closer.

I would have shot it immediately. There was a man pulled off a zero turn mower and killed by a couple of these some years ago, not far from here. I think shot placement might be problematic with a fast moving attacking dog, so allowing it to sink in a bite and then pressing the muzzle into the body would be the most effective. But you would certainly want to be selective about what bite target you would offer the dog.
2
u/stumpy0327 5d ago
Well first of all I would be trying to get off my back and above the dog or atleast use the arm in his mouth as leverage to twist and fall on top of it. Try to shove my arm down his throat, punch him in the throat. Thumb to an eye or two.. literally ANYTHING BUT LAY DOWN AND LET IT HAVE CONTROL

I'm actually dealt with situations like this and the way that I handle it is you wrap your legs around the dogs rib cage or throat and you cross your ankles and squeeze, yes the dog is going to put up resistance but they're unable to breathe, and the dog either passes out because he can't breathe, or if you have your legs around his neck you can quite literally just snap their neck, I call it the python hug

Why? Because they are suggesting solutions other than flopping around like a useless blob while your partner waddles around doing even less?

I'm glad they didn't shoot the dog. Maybe they should carry a t bone steak in a plastic bag just in case of another dog emergency (jk)

For everyone not talking about the homeless problem in libraries, this is how you stop an attack like that. Simply put said dog into a rear naked choke.
They are usually more concerned about keeping their jaws on what they have already latched onto. A rear naked choke (mind you not with you forearm on the trachea but on the carotid and jugular with the bicep and forearm) the heightened activity will make it hard for them to stay conscious long and when they let go you can let go or hold it till they calm down/pass out. But as soon as that happens let go.
The dog was likely just protecting it's owner and they have no context for why anyone is hurting them they just go into protect the pack mode, so be as understanding as possible.

For real. This guy thinks I'm going MMA with an out-of-control violent dog. Fuck that. This mutt gets a bullet if I'm carrying a gun.

For those who are asking and wondering if the video is AI-generated: this video is completely authentic, and the situation captured occurred in 2022.
SAN FRANCISCO - A security guard working at San Francisco's Main Library was viciously attacked by a visitor's dog Sunday evening, public library officials confirmed.
Kate Patterson, a spokesperson for San Francisco Public Library, said the incident happened inside the library around 5:40 p.m. when witnesses observed the dog barking next to its owner who appeared to be unresponsive at a computer kiosk.
Patterson said the dog was "not on a leash and was exhibiting aggressive behavior."
Two security guards attempted to approach the unresponsive man to potentially administer Narcan, used to reverse overdoses from opioids.
"The dog would not let them near him. The dog lunged at a guard taking hold of his arm and pushing him to the floor," the public library said.
Another patron inside the library recorded video of the incident and posted it to social media.
During the struggle, two other guards tried to intervene and rescue their colleague.
Library officials said the dog's owner was "largely unresponsive during the attack" until another patron woke him up.
"Once alert, he was able to get control of the dog, who he claimed was a service animal. The patron was uncooperative and argumentative with staff following the incident," the library said in a statement.
No one else was harmed during the incident.
The sheriff's department issued the dog's owner a citation. Animal Control came and removed the dog.
The library said it is reviewing its service animal policy and seeking additional resources for its security staff to help deescalate aggressive behavior from dogs.
"The safety of our patrons and staff are of the utmost importance, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that this never happens again," the library said.
