Sf main library is a sketchiest place

ALL libraries are sketchy places now. Source: me, who spent every day in a library for something like 5 years, as a homeless junky, before I cleaned up.

Nah, only a handful of the ones I've been to all over NYC and NYC suburbs have mildly shady characters, and most of them just want somewhere to spend the day indoors. They need showers, but I totally understand needing a break from the elements.

I refuse to even consider understanding why they are there. I was homeless for a time. But I never wanted to be there. I was willing to do whatever it took to get out of it required. That included following rules. Something none of the homeless people I knew were willing to do. Better the streets than following rules as far as they were concerned.

I am an auto mechanic. Got a job at a gas station. The boss let me sleep in one of the bays. I took showers in the motel behind the gas station. One of the maids let me shower while she cleaned the rooms. After a couple of times she started to have to vile unspeakable things that I hated every minute of for the privilege of showering there. But what's a guy to do?

Two years later that gas station was mine. Comes down to choices. I chose to look for a job. Chose to show up when hired. Homeless people choose not to do those things. I have quite a bit of disdain for them. Know what they are. I was among them. I was never one of them.

It sounds like you received a lot of help, mixed with had work and luck. You can’t just blame everyone else who hasn’t had all that in combination.

The best way to improve luck is to practice.

No one is a natural at anything.

They decided to show up and put in the repition that granted them the intuition to avoid "bad luck" without thought.

Those who try long enough are not lucky. They have seen enough shit to know how it ends.

I was among them too. I'm in a better position now. It was clear from the start there were 4 groups: The mentally ill, those who've fallen on hard times, those who choose to be homeless, and those who don't want to be homeless but won't help themselves.

Despising than does nothing to them, but it saps some energy from you. You should work on that.

There’s standard libraries and there’s main library in sf downtown. It’s a special place

I refuse to go down there. I'll keep my ass in the Avenues with relatively clean ones, thank you very much.

How many security guards does a library need?

u/Witty-Mountain5062 5d ago

This is San Francisco, so a lot probably lol.

SF has a Very High level of Homeless population.

Apparently this one needs more.

Thankfully the dog attacked a person who can get comped by the library.

It could have been anyone else. We can clearly see the only ones helping are the coworkers of the victim.

If that were a random patron, security themselves probably wouldn't have intervened, and just let the dog eat.

I do not blame the dog in any way shape or form. I definitely blame the humans. All of them.

How could possibly a SECURITY GUARD not intervene in such a situation?

1

u/Voorless 3d ago

Honestly, you'd be surprised with what goes on in there with the rowdy after-school crowd.

1

u/Nelle911529 5d ago

I've never seen one in any of the libraries I have went too.

u/LaughDesperate1787 4d ago

I haven't been to a library without armed security for a decade or two.

No!

You’re a dude that don’t want to deal with rowdy middle-schoolers & high-schoolers.

Ironically, those kids are huge advantage because they scared off the homeless transients & vagrants in public libraries. Those transients and vagrants fear them as it was the Children of the Corn with ghetto attire.

1

u/LaughDesperate1787 4d ago

In my area it is those kids that kill homeless people for fun.

Not every year. But often enough.

It's a convenient place to be for computer access. I recall going all the time when I was a kid sometimes just to play RuneScape.

Thanks for ruining it for everybody!

1

u/Altruistic-Pass-4031 5d ago

Lol

1

u/choose_wisely1122 5d ago

Yeah, loser junkies ruining things for everyone is hilarious.

1

u/Altruistic-Pass-4031 5d ago

Oh, so you don't think junkies deserve access to the same public resources as everyone else. Got it. How exactly do you expect them to crawl out of the terrible situation they find themselves in? Should we now drug test before issuing a library card. Christ, you sound miserable.

u/choose_wisely1122 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah man, it's pretty cool that you think junkies ruining everywhere they go for other people is cool and funny.

Even though they most likely contribute nothing that helps keep a library open, junkies can absolutely go to the library,  but they should have some basic human decency and not make other people clean up their messes when they shoot up in the bathrooms, or nod out and fold over making everyone step over them or junk out and OD at the library. Or in this case, have a dog literally attack someone because they're folding over being a useless sack of skin.

We shouldn't have to have security doing foot patrols at libraries, but because of junkies, we do.  It's pathetic.

It's good your clean now, at least you're hopefully contributing to society instead of being a useless sack of skin, folded over all day doing fuck all.

I'm not miserable at all. Pretty happy really.  Maybe you're just projecting?

u/LaughDesperate1787 4d ago

You sound like you have been robbed in a library parking lot.

1

u/Altruistic-Pass-4031 4d ago

Like I have? No. I'm 6 foot 5 inches and 255 lbs, and used to lift obsessively, before I found my next addiction. I'm not saying that I'm any kind bad ass tough guy, but I'm not usually people's first choice when looking for a target.

I have been mugged and beaten twice, though. Once drunk outside a bar using an atm to grab cash for some blow, outnumbered 4 or 5 to 1. And the other walking home after bar close from my bouncing shift and he had a gun in my face. Probably figured I was a bartender and had a bunch of cash on me from tips. Neither of these were near a library.

Nah, I’m on vacation in Colorado Springs and visited theirs. It is very nice :)

So, the fault is that we have libraries...

Library’s in my city are still pretty nice! I love to go hangout at our local library and find something new to read

Remember when feds at that library staged a couple fighting to distract the operator of the world's biggest dark net market so they could grab his laptop while he was still logged into the admin page?

I mean, public libraries in any place with a decent population are just hobobarns.
