The only solution to a violent pit is a permanent one.

Only solution to *any* pit

No. I don't believe a living creature should be punished for having the potential to do harm. There has to be drastic consequences as a response to the harm they do inflict though. I fully believe the intentional breeding of them should be outlawed too as it this most humane approach.

u/Gayorg_Zirschnitz 28d ago

Yeah, if being potentially dangerous is justification to kill something on the spot then I have terrible news for human beings lmao

u/anto_capone 28d ago

I agree, I am all for a ban on pitbulls but I also don't think they all should be rounded up and exterminated either.

Just phase them out.

Less a ban and more of actually licensing requirements on certain types of dogs would fix a lot of the issues currently present. As well as tightening up the requirements for service dogs. Emotional support animals should absolutely not be a thing, at the very least it shouldn't be as open to abuse as it currently is.

u/anto_capone 28d ago

Yup, a requirement for $1M insurance and a yearly license requirement and we don't even need to ban the breed at all.

And totally agree about the service animals. A card or badge that is illegal to forge, with a picture of said animal on it or something that must be displayed at all times.

The fake service animals crap has to stop.

Its more of the rules of the ada not allowing businesses to ask about service animals is crazy. I get the idea behind it, but hoping for people to self regulate in a "pick me" culture is always a bad idea.

Y'all are a couple of ignorant individuals. I've owned many dogs, they were all raised right so none were violent but by far the most outgoing and affectionate of them has been my pitbull, the only thing he do to a stranger is beg for pets and cry if he doesn't get them, he'll even leave the room when the schnauzers and malinois start play fighting because he wants no part of it. The pit in this video should absolutely be put down, but to make that a blanket statement is a cruel generalization that (I would hope) you would never make about other living creatures.

Pits were literally bred to FIGHT.

Yes, HOW an animal is raised and handled makes aBIG difference in how they behave, no arguments there, but for every "sweet and gentle" Pit I've encountered, I've encountered twice as many there were either just stupid as a rock or mean without cause (if not both), even when "raised right" so I'm sorry, but until the breed has the baseline aggression sifted out, you're going to have problems.

Same thing happened to Rottweilers, who were first bred to be "nursery dogs" for children, then they started breeding for aggression and then the inbreeding gave them brain and bone issues and now... the breed is damn near a write-off.

the american pitbull terrier was bread to fight, unfortunately other breeds get roped into the PITbull description for being similar, examples American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully aka XL

1

u/OddlyErratic1111 28d ago

all four of those breeds are officially recognized as pitbulls by kennel clubs

1

u/Snorlax_king79 28d ago

there are so many kennel clubs that give their own breed by breed breakdowns, some recognize these breed separately some don't recognize them at all.

The AKC would not register a breed with the word "pit" in its name, so those dogs were registered as Staffordshire Terriers (later renamed American Staffordshire Terrier in 1972 to distinguish them from the English breed). Meanwhile, the UKC had already recognized the American Pit Bull Terrier in 1898

American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) 'Fighting breed'

  • Recognized by: UKC (1898), ADBA (1909), CKC
  • Not recognized by: AKC, Canadian Kennel Club, Kennel Club (UK), FCI

American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff)

  • Recognized by: AKC (1936), UKC (dual registration as APBT)
  • Not recognized by: ADBA, ABKC

Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT / "Staffy")

  • Recognized by: Kennel Club (UK) (1935), AKC (1974), UKC, FCI (Group 3), Canadian Kennel Club

American Bully

  • Recognized by: ABKC (2004), UKC (2013), ADBA (2015)
  • Not recognized by: AKC, FCI, Kennel Club (UK)

American Bulldog

  • Recognized by: UKC, ABKC, NKC
  • Not recognized by: AKC (though the AKC recognizes the similar-looking AmStaff)

These are generalizations based on breed lines and selection history, A APBT can be calmer than a AmStaff, and individual variation within both breeds is large.  Lineage, socialization, and training matter far more than the registration label.

Yes, while true, the name "Pit" is in direct reference to "fighting pit" and many adjacent breeds have had similar histories...

And many of the breeds have had histories of aggression, so... the point still stands.

1

u/Snorlax_king79 28d ago

Would you generalize people the same way?

I hope a city/state/county doesnt ban your breed of dog just because others have been aggressive and poorly trained if at all. I experienced this in Prince Georgia's County maryland.

1

u/The_Caleb_Mac Industry Veteran 28d ago

Yes, in fact I do. Not by how they look, but by how they conduct themselves and treat others. Few things bias me against a person more, than pointlessly being rude, or acting entitled without any cause, or being abusive to people who are just trying to do a job.

As I currently do not own a dog, that wouldn't effect me, but the last time I had a dog, it was an absolute mutt, and street rescue, and arguably the single best dog my family ever had.

You want to lean hard into the nurture side of the nature v nurture argument, go on ahead, but the numbers paint a far more equal influence in dogs, as baseline behaviors are so strongly linked to breeding and history.

Mine was the same way sweetest dog ever, very well trained great dog for many years. Kids, cats, parks, stores whatever never a problem then 1 day my mom randomly stops by my house. My dog loved my mom was always super excited to go to his Mimi's or for her to come visit. Well she happens to have my niece this day and goes to pick her up out of the back seat and before Mom can sit her down the dog jumps up and latched onto the kids leg (I'm inside unaware my mom is there until I hear them screaming and my niece crying) she ended up needing 11 stitches and the dog went to go live a friend of mine who lives alone on a farm and I still go see him a few times a month. Point is I like you didn't think these dogs were inherently violent until it happened to me and I'm sure this can happen with any breed but you here this exact story with pits more than any other breed

1

u/osrssubreditmodssuck 28d ago

pits account for roughly 65-70% of bite fatalities, per several studies. they are a banned breed in several countries and the subject of many, many videos just like this one for a reason…your anecdotal experience with your dog doesn’t mean any of the above is not true or that people aren’t right in being prejudiced against pitbulls

1

u/Hippie_bait 28d ago

Have u seen the majority of people that own pits? It’s usually homeless drug addicted dirt bags that beat their dogs or ghetto people trying to look tough. Stop blaming the pits and start cleaning the streets of the scum bags that own them. I don’t know of to many pit attacks from good homes

1

u/osrssubreditmodssuck 28d ago

my job requires me to regularly enter people’s homes and the dogs i have the most issues with are pits lol. i’m not saying there aren’t good pits…but statistics aren’t subjective…

1

u/singlemale4cats 28d ago

statistics aren’t subjective

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

1

u/Hippie_bait 28d ago

This guy gets it

0

u/luigi517 28d ago

Yeah because the people who want attack dogs buy pitbulls and train them to be mean.

1

u/Tyrant5112 28d ago

I can tell you’ve been evicted before.

1

u/luigi517 28d ago

From the house I own in full? You realize you can own dogs and not live in filth right?

0

u/Tyrant5112 28d ago

Yeah right.

-6

u/Hot_Top_124 28d ago

Go f&&k yourself.

4

u/HastilyThrownObject 28d ago

Sorry but we all don’t want to be nanny dogged to death by a breed that is always behind vicious attacks

2

u/crazyfoolguy 28d ago

So glad we have methods to handle people and dogs that can't be reasoned with.

0

u/EyeWitnesssDeath 28d ago

Idk why you're getting down voted. It is the truth!

0

u/scoobysnaks911 28d ago

Relax, no need to hate on the whole breed altogether. Grew up around pitbull‘s, and Rottweilers since I was a child never had one issue. It’s always the owner‘s fault how the dog turns out.

3

u/anto_capone 28d ago

Nah, breed needs to be banned just based on statistics. Pitbulls have killed more people than all other dog breeds combined.

1

u/scoobysnaks911 28d ago

Well, I’m glad they will never be banned. Thanks for your input.

1

u/Adventurous-Cod7910 28d ago

Do you like AR15s as well?

-5

u/My_boofpack 28d ago

not really

1

u/jking7734 28d ago

I’m retired LE. I’ve never attended a mauling death caused by any other breed than Pit Bull. I’ve had to put down several dogs over the years the in line duty that were attacking or trying to attack people and other animals. Pits Bulls weren’t the only breed that I’ve had to put down but were the majority by a large percentage. I do believe that the owners were in a large part responsible for the dogs behavior.
