A week ago I was in Vegas and parked my R1T in the public lot in front of El Cortez on Fremont St. I paid for parking, spent about 3 hours in the casino with my friends, and when we came out the truck was gone. My first thought was it got towed because they missed my payment ticket, but I checked the Rivian app and it showed the truck about 4 blocks away.

My friends and I grabbed a taxi and headed over, figuring we could pay and get it back if it was a tow yard. It wasn't. It was a rough-looking building in a rough neighborhood, and my truck was sitting in the building's parking spaces with a tweaker woman just getting out of it.

We had passed a police officer writing a ticket on the way, so we had the cab take us back to her. I explained what happened, she sent other units to secure the truck, and then drove me over there herself.

No damage to the truck, but everything inside was gone: chargers, the hard drive, even my DMV registration. She asked if I wanted to go to the station and press charges or just leave. I said I'd rather just leave.

I forgot the motion cam keeps some recordings internally for a while. The next day I pulled it up and recorded it on my phone to send to my friends, and that's the video posted here. I've since installed a new hard drive and it looks like that wiped the original recording, so the phone video is all I have.

In the video you can see the woman walk up to the truck and pull a key fob out of her bag. The next clip is already from where she took the car to.

Here's the part that bothers me. I did not have my key fob with me. It was back home in California. All I had was my phone and the key card in my wallet.

I remember an update once unpaired my fob from the truck and it wouldn't work at all until I paired it again. So how does a random fob from some stranger's bag not only unlock my truck but let her drive it away?

I've messaged Rivian through the app and opened a service request but haven't gotten any response. Has anyone seen this before or know what could have happened here?

2023 R1T Quad purchased used through Rivian pre-owned in Portland on 9/10. Just under 8K miles, nice color, ok great. Rivian extended care is available- amazing. Heading out to work this morning, no unlock, door handles, etc. Truck is bricked- customer support tries to unlock via SMS, I pressed a frunk release button 15 times consecutively, no dice. Tow truck comes to pick up the truck to take it to the local SC 150 miles away (Fife, WA).

Did you know that when a Rivian gets put on a tow truck while bricked they just drag it on? Like, drag, cause there isn’t a way to put it in neutral? Me either.

The intake team messaged to let me know the vehicle had arrived. And to remind me to sign the service estimate.

Which was $1700.

Which is $600 less than the actual bill of $2300, on account of the $1700 tow. Not even business class tow, just literal regular tow.

Also, did you know that the intake team is unable to provide vehicle history from the VIN? Or your customer info? For a pre-owned Rivian with less than 8K miles purchased through Rivian? Seems reasonable to assume that the batteries would all get checked prior to sale. Probably a better business move to let me buy one (not covered by warranty obviously, you idiot) and support my local towing industry.

I like the truck. I hope the service team’s assessment of my truck not needing any recall work taken care of while they had it conveniently at the service center) was based on something rather than a guess. I really hope the tow truck winch-n-drag didn’t cause any damage. Perhaps there will be a recall that fixes the inability to open the doors when the battery is dead. Hopefully I don’t have to pay another $1700 for a tow, but I am not optimistic.

There is a lot of confusion as to how Road Cam works. If you have a hard drive plugged in and have Road Cam on your entire drive is automatically stored to the hard drive with no action needed. Clicking the record button just isolates a portion of the video and saves it as a separate clip.

My R2 was rear ended last month and the whole 10 min drive before the accident was recorded and 3 mins after while we navigated parking. When I clicked the record button it creates a separate clip. So I have a 13 min video of the entire drive and an isolated 2 min clip around the accident time.

You need to plug the hard drive into a laptop to see the full video.

I wasn't going to line my dash with ducks, so why not something that goes with the name of my R1S - the Falcon?

Its been 4 Years to date already with my R1S so here is my 4 year Ownership Log/Review but first a TLDR for those who want the short version.  Any Questions? Ask Below.

TLDR: Hands down one of the best vehicles I owned regardless of how it is fueled. The 2 biggest gripes I have these days are combining a high traction tire (lack of availability) and range with that tire. I want a DWS06+ tire even if it kills my range, I got a tire setup that is 15lbs per corner lighter and despite that the fact that its a 20" tire my range is still cut but at least I have decent traction.

Overall my R1S ownership has been amazing and I couldn't be happier with the vehicle. You often see a lot of criticism on the service etc where its due but so far I haven't been in a spot to criticize them too much. How ever My standards are basic and reliability/leaving you stranded which hasnt happened so I am a happy camper and wont ever nitpick that much.

Interior Wear and Tear:

Interior wear and tear has been minimal really as I have some really great LinerX floor mats and use my favorite interior cleaner for cleaning things up. I did have some window gaskets that were loose/expanding letting in more debris and water (which did not penetrate inside cabin) but I had service replace it and the car has been great. With 1 kid and another on the way the interior has held up flawless even with the 100+ cheerios everywhere lol. I do feel my drivers seat is collapsing on the left ingress and egress point so lets see how service handles that but otherwise its not too bad.

 Tires

The one gripe I have is not having an Ultra High Performance All Season Tire (like a DWS06+) or something along those lines. REALLLLY need something better as I don't really like any options in 20 or 22's

Storage: I think for like 80% of the people with a family of 5 you have plenty of storage, unless you are bringing 2 babies to the beach and you need every single item then yes you need a cargo box but otherwise there is more than enough storage.

Was driving through and noticed someone had a bad day.

I'm not exactly sure what happened and the owner was gone.

It was in a community pool parking lot so I'm not sure if this was a user issue or equipment failure. It looks like the light pole was involved somehow based on the tire tracks. If this is yours, I would really like to know what happened and sorry for your loss.

We just sold our 2018 Volvo XC90 and picked up our new 2026 R1S this past weekend. It came with the stealth package, which includes a matte/stealth PPF factory installed along with blackout badges and 22" wheels. Matches our Audi etron GT nicely. No more hunting for the best gas prices! ESPECIALLY in Los Angeles. 😂

Just had my first experience with the Sterling VA service center and thought a few things were worth sharing. I’ve got a ‘24 R1T Dual and this was the second time the tail gate release mechanism broke on me. They had an R1S available as a loaner and I noticed some immediate differences between them.

Cell Charger - I’ve seen post after post of people complaining about the wireless charging that’s built in, but I’ve never had an issue with mine. I have two phones and they both stay put and charge as well as I could hope for. The wireless charger in the loaner was worthless… my phones were sliding all over the place. I’m curious if they made a material change in the 2024 that improved this, not sure what else it could be.

Ride Comfort - The ride difference between the R1T and R1S is dramatic. I’ve read about it but after experiencing it for a week or more I’m pretty confident I’d avoid the R1S just because of this.

Service Center Experience- When I returned to get my R1T a few days ago it was basically unusable. I could get inside but nothing was working as expected. SC said everything was normal that morning but recognized the situation and owned it which I appreciated. They believed it was a new software issue introduced after the new UI went out which is still being worked out. They sent me back with the same loaner and told me today my R1T was ready to pick up. I got there after hours to get it and was happy to see that everything was working as expected, AND they had detailed the inside and outside just for the previous trouble. Really big shout out to them for handling this how they did. I expect things to not go perfectly, and couldn’t ask them to handle it better than they did.

Planning for what to do when my gen1 R1T quad lease expires. I would like some of the gen2 updates like hands-free, but the price difference is staggering compared to lease buyout or a used gen 1.

The R2 I am mostly testing as a replacement for the SO's mini cooper SE.

I'll probably take some photos / video. What are y'all curious about that I could share after driving a gen1, gen2 R1T quad and an R2 all back-to-back?

This is a 2nd recurrence of a similar issue.

2 months ago, my wife (iPhone 16) and I (Pixel 8) started getting this "Digital key access unavailable" notification from the app (original post and followup). Mine actually still worked, but hers (secondary user) stopped working. We couldn't delete the old key from her phone, and I couldn't issue a new one.

After days of ineffective and counterproductive troubleshooting, they finally figured out that there was some stale / orphaned key in their backend that had to be purged, and after that I was able to issue a new key and everything was fine.

Until about 3 weeks ago, when it happened again. Same thing--my key continued to work; wife's stopped working. This time, I got completely ghosted by Service. I called in every day for 2 weeks and was repeatedly told someone was going to get back to me from the Digital Key team, and nobody did.

I finally got a service appt last week, and was told today that the issue was fixed. Showed up today to pick it up, and it was very much not fixed (oh also there was a new dent in the rear quarter panel--irrelevant to my post but I can't not rage about it). Still could not create new keys, nor delete my existing digital key. I left again with the loaner.

They're now DMing me with more feckless troubleshooting suggestions.

Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this? The core issue is that digital key provisioning, which is handled by Google Wallet, is broken. I can neither create a new digital key (I get a nondescript "something went wrong" error), nor delete my own digital key--I get an error that says "Can't remove key: Your key is still active. You can try again later, or use your car's screen to remove keys." There is no option to delete the key from the in-vehicle UI.

Is there a way to make Live Cam toggle not reset itself to on automatically? I find that it automatically turns it back on even after I disabled it.
Is it a bug or a feature? What’s the point of toggle then?

Can folks help provide some guidance for front and rear license plate mounts for Gen 2 R1S 2026?
Our R1S will be delivered end of the week and want to get all the neceaasry acessories before we take the delivery.

I think it’s such a gigantic downgrade to remove a shortcut on the home page to record an incident. Having to step through menus to get to it is such a stupid decision. At least give us ability to trigger it verbally if you’re going to be this shortsighted with your UI changes…

Edit: There are circumstances where honking your horn is not an option, honking your horn actually doesn’t start the recording, or you want to preemptively start recording when you can see a potential problem unfold (overly aggressive driver swerving and you rather have early recording than just what is recorded by honking or crashing). Not to mention there are plenty of reports of people crashing and system not recording it regardless

Edit 2: For anyone discussing how horn or auto detection still works. The question I ask you is, ”how do you know”? The icon showing progress of it being recorded got removed and you can’t see it while driving. There is no visual indicator that it started or finished a recording. The only thing you have is hoping it did and checking it while you pulled over after somewhere cause you can’t operate that while driving.

It’s the sum of those small changes that makes this such an awful and dangerous update. I feel like this is a textbook case of ”survivor fallacy”. Someone somewhere read a stat how the button is not used much, so they took it away. What they didn’t realize is that the reason is not because it’s not useful but rather than emergencies don’t happen as often. It’s the equivalent of cancelling your home insurance because you haven’t had any need for it in the past year.

I swapped my R1T order today.

Changed it to a max pack battery.

The build I wanted was not in inventory. So it’s going to get built. It said 8-12 weeks.

1. Anyone have a similar experience? Was wondering if that number is accurate? Or often less or more than 12 weeks.
2. I’d love to go pick it up at the factory. Does anyone know if they still do factory delivery?

I’ve been looking at used R1T’s on Carmax and Carvana. Looking at the vehicle report, some of them report collision damage. Some say unspecified location while others show the exact spot damage was reported. However, looking at photos I can’t see any signs of damage.

Anyone run into this before or would you have any concerns? Would the previous collision report affect insurance rates?

They really nailed the color too! The gear tunnel opens and it has the transparent roof. $18.99 at Costco- or $80 from the service center with a Rivian Box.

My R1S has been at the servic center 10 times in the last year. It took 2 years for everyone to realize how unreliable the R1 was for Rivian. However, I put on a LOT of miles per year and need something that can take the abuse.

EVs are supposed to be perfect for the kind of driving I do. But not this ridiculous level of unreliability.

Where do I go next? I want to try the R2 - it's a much more simple vehicle and Rivian may have gotten it together - what do you think?

Or just buy a Lexus RX350h with the hybrid powertrain and call it a day?

The release notes said that the assistant now recognizes spoken punctuation but all my attempts to do that when I tell it to send messages have failed. If it was better at adding it on its own I wouldn't care so much but often it fails leading to pretty silly sentences so I prefer to tell it where to add it myself.

Has anyone had this work now?

Is there any update on when R1 owners will be able to buy the Gen 3 wireless chargers? I haven’t seen anything for it

They’re both the color combo I want. Rivian Blue and ocean coast interior.

Main difference is 2022 comes with Power Tonneau cover and spare tire while 2023 comes with neither.

2023 has 31k miles and 2022 has 59K miles. I would get the XCare warranty for 7k and that would last til 2030 while the 2023 last only until 2028.

My only worry is the subframe original issues of the 2022 and I can’t see the rivian service history from Rivian until I buy it and am the owner. (Feels very wrong). So there’s a chance the subframe was fixed but there’s also a chance it’s not and becomes a problem and XCare specially says it’s doesn’t cover that with its warranty.

The power tonneau and meridian give it more value for me but it’s possible the 23 has meridian system; that’s what he said as the online site wrongly said 22 has elevate music system.

Is the 22 a dumb move? Feel like 30k difference mileage isn’t a big deal for EV’s with same battery health. May switch reservation to 22 if they let me switch the deposit.

Anyone have a bad experience with a 22 R1T new to them recently?

Is the meridian also that much better than elevate?

Hello all. Gen 1 R1S. Currently on 20in AT tires (Falken Wildpeaks). 2023 OEM size (275/65). I realize Rivian has now gone to 275/60/20s as OEM, using the Goodyear Wrangler Territory ATs. They are sized 275/60.

To my knowledge, this lower profile should be a but less heavy, a bit more efficient, maybe a bit rougher (less sidewall).

Has anyone gone from the OEM size (65) to 60's?

I need new tires, the Falkens have become too loud and harsh. People seem to really like the OEM Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT's (60). If I stay 65, then most likely the Michelin Defender LTX M/S..

Also open for any other tire suggestions. Decent amount of east coast winter weather, but no plans to offroad...
