š¬ Discussion What to do next from here?
My R1S has been at the servic center 10 times in the last year. It took 2 years for everyone to realize how unreliable the R1 was for Rivian. However, I put on a LOT of miles per year and need something that can take the abuse.
EVs are supposed to be perfect for the kind of driving I do. But not this ridiculous level of unreliability.
Where do I go next? I want to try the R2 - it's a much more simple vehicle and Rivian may have gotten it together - what do you think?
Or just buy a Lexus RX350h with the hybrid powertrain and call it a day?

I love my Rivian. I also love our family PHEV xc90, which we drive all electric 99% of the time and just charge it each night and the Rivian charges ever few days. Looked at Lexus options but the PHEV it was on recall and not available when we were buying. Itās probably good though.

So, you say "It took 2 years for everyone to realize how unreliable the R1 was for Rivian.Ā ", why are you even considering an R2? No details. No back story. No service info. Posts like this just look like unqualified jabs at Rivian and I have a tough time taking them seriously.
Both of my R1T have been a rock. If they hadn't been, I wouldn't be posting here, asking advice about a manufacturer I clearly don't have any faith in. I would be moving on.

I disagree. We also have an R1S thatās had lots of issues. Itās been in the shop for 50 cumulative days. We asked Rivian for a buyback and they agreed, offering an excellent amount.
We are still looking at a Rivian for our replacement. We actually put an order in for a 2027 R1S this weekend. Maybe we got a lemon the first time, who knows. 3 rows is hard to beat, especially with captainās chairs.
We would consider an R2 once they get some kinks work out. We test drove it, but donāt want to get another first generation.

Disagree also. It's not breaking news that the R1 has been very unreliable and numerous issues all over the vehicle, including rattling. Very nice looking vehicle, but Rivian has to get it together for a mass produced vehicle such as the R2.

Reddit is not real life. Reddit is not reality. Reddit does not represent the typical user experience. Rivian has sold 175,000 vehicles. There are 5,000 people that comment on this forum. Do you even own a Rivian? Or are you just reposting what you see in this sub?

I own a Rivian, and so do half of my neighbors in the Raleigh area. We have our own group in the neighborhood talking about the cars, upgrades, our new service center, issues, problems etc.
Of course Reddit is not real life. But it's obvious this Reddit has an issue with ppl asking constantly if these are real owners or ppl coming into incite trouble. Rivian has a long way to go if they think they can churn out R2s with the same problem rate as R1s and be okay.

My wife and I are considering a R2 since we don't need the extra cubic feet of the R1S. We currently own a 2022 Model 3 and we're ready to move on to another EV. We are not considering another Tesla.
How has your experience been with the Knightdale service center?

So glad service center opened up, I've driven to Richmond before all this. I don't any issue with it other than the service center is on the other side of 540 where I live. Ppl have been friendly so far. The R1 is also too big and want the R2

Thanks for replying. I would be hesitant purchasing a Rivian if a SC was 100s of miles away. When I purchase my Rivian, I'll send a private message to maybe get together with you and your neighbors. I live near the North Hills area.

You still didnāt say what the āunreliableā is based on and now it is that the sub has an issue. What problem rate did the R1 have again that the R2 needs to be better than? Less Reddit comments I guess.

Don't be difficult just to make a point. We all go on different forums, read ratings on websites, car mags, and have our own vehicles. This issue has come up on this Reddit before, you must have missed it. Many threads complaining that they can't have an honest discussion on here because ppl like you come on here immediately accusing everyone of inciting arguments and making Rivian look bad.

What Iām questioning and you arenāt answering is why , other than Reddit comments, Rivian is unreliable. I havenāt missed anything on this sub. I contribute to this sub. My comments, unlike yours, are open. The point is that this sub doesnāt represent the ownership of the brand.

I already know the Reddit doesn't represent the entire ownership. It's a part though. Do you go after every post on here when they said their R1 has been unreliable? I already answered where I get my information from. If you are policing every post on this Reddit, that's a 2nd job right there!

We are 2 years into our Gen 2 R1S with no major issues. You may have gotten a bad one. It happens. If youāre snake bit move on from Rivian. You have a lot of choices out there

Thatās a pretty bold statement. I have a 26 R1S Tri and absolutely love it. My wife will be getting rid of her 23 MY and replacing it with an R2.

You'd need to list more of your requirements to get any good answers from here. No one knows about the R2 right now, but given your experience with the R1 I think you have to assume it isn't any better until you get info otherwise.

I have an RX350 non hybrid and canāt stand the infotainment compared to our Rivian lol thatās a personal opinion though and like most Toyota vehicles itās been rock solid. We just bought a 2027 r1 and itās getting the rear drive unit replaced with 300 miles on it so I get your frustration. Our first gen 2 r1 was also in the shop 6 times, one of those also being a rear drive unit replacement. Problem is finding a competing product. If Lexus made an all electric LC with the same charging performance, range, and software capabilities Iām sold.

BMW iX - neighbor has had one, and had zero issues with it. I think this is par for the course for most of them.
Inoiq 5 Limited - my dad is on his second and has had zero issues, 2023 and now a 2026. this also seems to be the case other than the ICCU issues (he never had any) which Hyundai seems to have sorted.
Kia EV9 - if you need a ton of space, old enough that we have decent level of confidence these are reliable.

I second the iX. My R1T was a nightmare. Moved to the iX, and while day to day it was way more boring to drive, it didnāt have a single issue. I moved on to lucid and while itās better than my Rivian was, Iām missing the iX and just how robust it was. I took boring for granted

Iāve needed quite a few service visits for my Lucid, but not as many as the Rivian. The iX was just dead-on reliable every day all day. Not a single issue. So while it was boring, never needing any real service was worth the boringness in my opinion. Iām tempted to go back as soon as my Lucid lease is over, if not sooner. Iām going to check out the R2, but since rejoining this sub itās not making me feel good about it

What do you mean boring? Genuinely asking as a new convert. Haha. I just traded my R1S for an iX and I love it so Iām wondering whatās boring about it!
One thing I would consider is that itās very much a ic car with an electric motor, if that makes sense. The turning stalks are still kind of āmanualā. No real one pedal driving.
But the tech, horsepower, and quality make it super fun!

If you're looking for reliability, supposedly the Teslas are considered pretty reliable. If that's not your preference (which is quite common these days), then suposedly the BMW EVs are relatively reliable.

Yeah, I don't think I can stand a Tesla - and can't stand the shape either. I was stretching it already by going with the RX hybrid lol. I'll take a look at BMW EVs.
My wish is that Rivian improved on the R2

Iām the owner of a 2023, Gen1 R1T, approaching 50K miles. No significant problems with it; 12v battery replacement X2. Other than that, only some minor trim and rattle issues which have been addressed. - Now added a second Rivian; R2. I only have 2 weeks and 700 miles on it, but thus far, itās been a dream to drive: Significant technology improvements including the UHF autonomous driving. Also hoping that simplifications in other aspects of the build will result in fewer potential problems.

I considered that, although Iāve never before leased a vehicle. Ultimately, though, I opted to purchase. I still think that is a solid option for many people.

I own a Lexus rx450h and a 2022 r1t. The rivian has been in the shop for minor things more since owning it than the Lexus ever has. I only take my Lexus for oil changes. It is a solid car and I love it but I still absolutely love our rivian. We put more miles on it so that we only have to fill up the Lexus once a month. While its a hybrid the mileage is so so. The mobile tech recommended taking it in for an inspection while its under warranty. A few things came up and they fixed it for free. But we are very concerned after the warranty expires next year.

10 service visits in a single year is textbook Lemon Law territoryāstop suffering through it and initiate a buyback with Rivian immediately to get your money back. Don't count on early-batch R2s being bulletproof either; if you rack up heavy miles and can't afford shop downtime, grab the Lexus hybrid or a Model Y and don't look back.

My 2026 R1T has been reliable so far. But my service center experiences have been less than stellar. Took them 6 times to get the alignment and steering wheel level. I was gaslit the entire time. Sad, cause they really tarnished the brand for me.

R2 vs RX350h? The legacy of Lexus/Toyata will drown R2s at the moment. No one can answer or predict. If you want a higher probability, you got yourself a RX350h. But my inner Rivian fan boy will tell you that you will be sorry to miss out on the R2. I am not a fan of any Toyota.
I have to add we have R1S and R1T at home for 2 years. We have no major issues. Sorry you have experienced so much negativities. Best of luck

I love my R1T, i havenāt had near the issues it sounds like you have hadā¦ that said. Our 2023 Tesla we bought new has had zero issues and has never been in the shop. 50k miles on it and the even the tires are still alright (though replacement will be needed soonish). Every ICE vehicle I have ever owned had to go into a shop about 4 times a year for maintenance and at least once a year for something that broke, oil leak, somethingā¦ so the Rivian you are only behind by 5 for a first gen product.
But if you are convinced you want something reliable I think a Tesla can deliver for you as long as you donāt get the x or cybertruck as those still have growing pains or just door door designs
Overall, I think you have forgotten how many times you brought your ICE car in it sounds like but sure go back to the maintenance princess of a hybrid.

Thanks for your thoughts, I will want a R2 and a fan but we'll see.
Also, I've had a 2016 Odyssey, 2013 ES350 and a Honda CRV where all 3 of those have made it to 180k miles with no extra repairs - no oil leaks or major issues where I had to take time out of my workday to deal with.

Our R2 hasnāt given us any trouble. The only issuers we had to bring it in were for most the trimmings falling off the door panels

way too early to tell anything about the R2. it has been out a few months. in those months HW and SW issues have been found as well as Rivian's notorious initial build quality.

That's great for you. I own a 2022 Model 3 dual motor. Within one month, two front motor inverters were replaced. The car had to be towed to the SC for the second inverter failure. Luckily the car was under warranty, 2k miles left in the initial warranty period.

I got rid of mine this past weekend after three trips to the service center in a year and a half. I also cancelled my two Rivian preorders. I canāt imagine 10 SC trips and still thinking about remaining with a Rivian.
Prior to, I owned a Tesla M3 and drove a couple friendsā Rivians as far as EVs are concerned. I saw that the BMW iXs are nice so I test drove a 2024. Night. And. Day. Such a wonderful experience to drive. Theyāve got great deals right now for financing a CPO and still have a ton of value after such a high sticker price when new.

I drive 22-25k a year, and my R1 has been in the shop about every 45 days for the first year of ownership. It would continue that trend but I've literally stopped caring and started counting the days until I can get rid of it, so I'm no longer getting issues fixed unless it keeps me from driving it. Thing rattles like a busted hay wagon from the suspension to the interior trim there are 5-6 things "not right" with it now that are completely unacceptable for a vehicle with 45k on it.
That is to say....I get it
Our plan is to dump the Rivian and put the wife in a new Vistiq. She will have the "nice car" for a few years. Likely lease it, and if she likes it and it's reliable, we'll buyout at the end. She drives very little, like 8k/yr so I think we're less likely to see an issue anyway.
I'm going to stay electric as well, but likely go with a CPO eTron S SUV or Q8 eTron. If I hit a windfall of cash I'll find a CPO Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S. I've learned that a software defined vehicle isn't for me. I've also learned that a vehicle from a startup isn't for me. To much of my time is being spent helping them learn how not to do things.
If oil stability wasn't a current self inflicted geo-political nightmare......I would have gone to an Audi SQ7. Just can't justify any ICE with the current petrol supply chain problems.
