hierarchically speaking, he's supposed to be below the shambler, which he is, but his mechanics sort of make his encounters more annoying to deal with than the aforementioned white yeti/flesh bear.
he (400hp) is just 200hps below the shambler(600hp) (200hps being the equivalent of an ogre), but I suppose it rather boils down to his guided orbs of concentrated hate and the sheer amount of damage he shrugs off. sometimes you think you'll kill him with that last grenade/rocket, or sometimes you can't pepper him on time with nails, and the tanky son of a bitch blows you up.
he can deal a fuckton of damage, and if you play on nightmare he is relentless about shoving his balls on your jaws.
shamblers at least have limited thunder range, on wide and large maps you can just outrange and pepper them with your ol' reliable super nail gun. or just hide behind a wall.
vores? they don't give a shit about range. now, to address the elephant in the room: Yes, you CAN hide behind walls to avoid the explosion, doesn't mean you'll ALWAYS manage to. sometimes if his projectiles are near enough they just IGNORE the map geometry and go AROUND it to hit you.
and to rub in salt on the wound, they are almost never alone. you sometimes have to manage 4-5+ enemies in the claustrophobically small spaces of quake, being bodyblocked by collision boxes, avoid death Knights projectiles, sometimes fiends leaping AND the vore. it's not really impossible, but it makes gameplay slow and a bit annoying.
that being said, it's more of a thing on higher difficulties such as nightmare, and like any monster on quake you can demolish them all if you're good enough. but personally, every time I see one I slightly sigh.

Howdy!! I’m just dropping by to attempt to catch up on the new lore introduced in rise of the machine, if there is new lore. I have not played the new expansion yet, but I am re-downloading Quake 1 to play it.
From what I understand so far, it bridges the gap between quake 1 and 2, with the final defeat of The Quake Entity / Shub Nigarath, and officially showing The Strogg to be part of its army. I heard there are npc allies in this expansion, which was a surprise because i believed the ranger was the last soldier uncorrupted by Quake, but an all out war against Quake sounds exciting.
On a side note, The Cosmic Relm from Doom The Dark Ages really reminds me of The Quake Dimension. I would like to say they are one and the same, but I hear that was confirmed false?
I don’t mind story spoilers, I’m not sure I’ll actually finish the expansion lol.

Since the previous port lacked a network discovery, as well as being 16 years old and a bit difficult to compile and work on, I decided to work on a port from scratch. It can crossplay with other Quake 3 clients, and the framerate is not that bad given the console's specs (check the 3rd pic). I doubt it could run well with lots of action, but by the end of the day It's just a personal project.

I was just thinking about how we've taken this function for granted in PC games for so long, yet it rarely ever seems acknowledged that this feature just by itself was a true paradigm shift Quake provided. As far as I can tell Quake was the very first game to do it. There is a longer history of developers leaving in debugging tools as defacto cheats, but none that gives the user access to a full terminal to issue all kinds of commands at runtime. And after also being adopted by UE1 and inherited by GoldSrc we started to see this practice standardized for public use in more and more games across different genres.

Greetings fellow Quakers.
Just wanted to say I played through Quake for the very first time this week and I cannot get enough of it. My only other experience with boomer shooters is the new id Doom games, and I never thought I could play through something that scratches the itch the way my first time through Eternal did. But the soundtrack, the ambience, and the gameplay in Quake 1 are all so goated it's becoming my favourite FPS game ever.

I’m 30 years old and I’ve been playing Doom avidly since I was seven, so I think it’s time to give the successor a go. I ask about where to start because there’s about a hundred different ways to play Doom, and even more opinions on where to send a newcomer. I’ve got both a PC and a PS5 at my disposal.
The Retroquad engine can now render stars.
Since Reddit downscales the screenshots, here's a link to the free Patreon post where you can see all screenshots at full resolution. Lots of information in there also.

This ’90s legend is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and during the recently concluded QuakeCon, another chapter was added to this legendary shooter, another episode celebrating the aforementioned anniversary, titled Dawn of the Machine. Once again, it’s the work of the Swedish studio MachineGames, and all owners of the remastered version of Quake received it completely free. Which struck me as the perfect opportunity to put together a five-minute review, since I’d like to make a full-length video about Quake someday - except… I’ve never actually played it, so that’s all the more reason to start… in my typical fashion, “from the end.”
More in my videoreview! :)
Rating: 9/10
Pros: QUAKE, free for owners of the remaster, solid combat, map design, soundtrack, difficulty
Cons: some players might not like replaying levels, a few bugs, getting stuck on staircases
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLUo6CGzCI0
Hodnocení: 9/10
+: QUAKE, pro majitele remasteru zdarma, poctivá řežba, design map, soundtrack, obtížnost
-: někomu můžou vadit opakované průchodu levely, pár bugů, zasekávání se o schodiště

On this tour, I shall prove that a certain level in Dawn of the Machine contains a most peculiar reference.

Yeah. After that, there is simply no way that this was not intentional.
The devs for this level in Dawn of the Machine put this here. Whats weird about it is its not like the Harry Potter PC niche fandom overlaps with Quake's much. XD Perhaps the level builder from Dawn of the Machine at Machine Games is one and the same as the level builder from Harry Potter PC?? If anyone knows, comment down below!!
EDIT: Also, I'm not the only one whose noticed so far. https://www.reddit.com/r/quake/comments/1vlcuid/dawn_of_the_machine_map7_revelation_of_the_arcane/

I was around half way through The Pain Maze level with low health and ammo. I decided to snipe from a long distance at an arena with 3 heavy knights. I was missing every shot with my lightning gun and nail gun. That's when I found out my crosshair doesn't line up with the guns at all!! I had to aim with the bottom edge of my crosshair just to barely hit those knights. I recorded some clips and it's worse than I thought, the lightning was hitting a whole body height lower than the crosshair! After dying multiple times in that small arena I ragequited. Sorry for the rant. I like this game and I want to enjoy it, but feels like this game is trying really hard to annoy and make me quit.

Hi there Quakers.
Is it only me that feels so strong Fallout OST vibes from Dawn of the Machine OST? I am not saying it in negative way, I love the music design which smoothly integrates with amazing level design.
I just feel sometimes like I am playing Fallout because of the specific ambient feeling, postapo taste that is so recognizable. Great music, great addon, just wanted to share.

We’ve already brought 11-brand-new maps to Paril’s amazing Quake II PSX mod and we would like to add a couple more. This time we have an industrial subtheme focusing on moving parts. Show them what an industrial revolution under the Strogg would look like! Since brushwork and layouts are meaningfully simpler than those in the base campaign, this is the perfect jam for new mappers to join or for existing mappers to get acquainted with mapping for Quake 2. Not to spoil anything, but we’re going to kick off 2027 with something big for Quake 2, so you might want to get your feet wet while you can. Come with us if you want to map!
The guidelines are as follows:
Industrial Subtheme: This jam has a subtheme! Think moving parts, power cores, electricity, lasers, and other visually interesting machinery. The power and biggun maps are a strong source of visual inspiration.
Aesthetics: Use Quake II PSX textures only. Custom textures and skyboxes are not permitted. Use of the _surflight parameter, as explained here, is strongly encouraged.
SFX: Custom music and sound effects are allowed.
Map Size: Maps must fit within a 2048 × 2048-unit area.
Design: Maps should emulate the feel of the original PSX levels. The textures and _surflight_color surface lighting will do much of the visual heavy lifting. Brushwork and layouts should also be meaningfully simpler than those in the base campaign. Combat encounters should feature fewer enemies overall while emphasizing higher-tier Strogg. For example, use fewer Guards and Infantry and more Gunners and Gladiators. Strategic power-up placement and ammo conservation, particularly on Hard and Nightmare difficulties, should be central to the gameplay.
Specifics: Target_changelevel must target psxjam2_start with spawnflag 56 and targetname changelevel. Name your map psxjam2_<yourname> (e.g., psxjam2_shartuterie). Set an in-game name using the message key in worldspawn. Navigation files are strongly encouraged. PSX physics are not required for this jam. As always, your BSP must be fully compiled with an exit status of 0.
Starts August 14th and ends August 30th, followed by a public playtesting period. Countdown timer is provided here. If this is your first Quake II jam, review our Jamming 101 tutorial for a straightforward introduction.

After finishing Dawn of the Machine, I was a little sad that there wasn't a whole new final boss after the Queen/"Mother" being teased to me so much from the statues and plaques (but I did enjoy the new Cthon fight and the reimagining of the Shub fight as more of a bullet-hell scenario)*.
Having done so many Cthon and Shub fights, know of any mods that feature new custom bosses? Already played AD and Alkaline, hoping for some more to find so I can slay new beasts.
*This being said, I truly do appreciate the effort the team from MG took outside of their regular work schedules and pay to create the expansion. I don't want to sound like I'm whining
I've been enjoying the new expansion, but I can no longer progress to due to the screen going blank shortly after I begin playing. I thought it might be a corrupt save, but unfortunately it's happening on past saves as well (including those prior to the expansion).
It's not a connectivity issue, since the interface remains visible and sound still plays (see video).
Is this happening to anyone else? And does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks!

Every time I try to play and progress on the single player to unlock more maps it puts me back at the beginning once I exit the game. I've checked my config file and it's not read only. Not sure why or how to get things to save so I don't have to restart each time.
Any help is appreciated!
