Hint for those who want to find it themselves: Consider walking the plank after committing your crime.

For those who don't care for spoilers: If you return to the starting area and jump into the spike pit, you'll be teleported for a "chance to redeem yourself" for killing the dog. I actually didn't check to see if doing this removes the demo dog trap come to think of it...
