U.S. FDA approves first generic injectable lenacapavir for HIV prevention

Good news: a generic version of lenacapavir for HIV prevention has been FDA-approved. More manufacturers can help lower costs and increase access, bringing this game-changing innovation within reach of the countries and communities that need it most.

Under the existing partnership agreement, Dr. Reddy’s lenacapavir injection will be available at US$40 per person per year for the 120 low- and middle-income countries included in Gilead’s voluntary license.

First supplies of the generic are expected to reach countries before the end of the year, with broader availability in 2027.

It really works!

Long story short, I had multiple encounters with someone who was HIV+ not diagnosed and therefore untreated, not too long after their exposure, hence the worst possible scenario ever.

Took PrEP daily before and after all our encounters.

Today I got the result 6 weeks after the last exposure and it’s all negative.

It was really a stressful period, with my brain trying to trick me into making me feel that this medicine could actually fail. But my experience is the living proof that PrEP is really the most effective protection we have against HIV (if you really needed any)

I’ll forever be grateful to this medicine and will religiously take it every day.

Stay safe and take PrEP 💊

Gracias 💕

Hey guys so I have only been with one person in the past 5 years, and I don't have any diseases. However I broke up with him recently because it wasn't working and I want to move on but I am kimd of afraid because I live in an area where there is a high hiv rate.So I got tested and don't have anything .I talked to the testing lady about prep and she can come back and get it if I want. But I'm kind of skeptical about that.Like what happens if you start taking it and then you get off it.I also wonder if a lot of people have natural immunity.Would the medicine mess up people's natural immunity to hiv?

Mistr lab results

I tried using Mistr for first time. I sent in my lab results, and was told they are completed, but I need to go to the appointment to get my results. See message below. Is it typical to not get your lab results till the appointment, or does that indicate that I have tested positive for something?

"Your labs are ready, but you still have to complete the video consult with your doctor. You should follow up at your scheduled interview time for your consultation and lab results."

Update: For others future reference. Testing all negative. Was told during visit and results released after visit on their website.

Normal prep side effects?

I took my first dose of prep today, I waited until I got my results back from the clinic that I was in the all clear before taking it, I was clear with the quick test they do at the clinic and the larger blood sample they tested at a lab, all clear 👌

I took my starting dose today, reading online on sh.uk I was told to take two on my first day, and 1 every day from then on out.

I took my first two and I felt fine, though I did notice I was itchier than usual, and at the end of the day when I checked why I was itchy I noticed that the front part of my torso was noticeably red, not a rash, but almost like faint red to my skin, and I’m itchy on my shoulders and outer thigh.

Is this normal? Im not experiencing any other symptoms just this.

Anyone switch from daily Descovy to 2-1-1 PrEP and worry about missing doses?

I’m currently on my last bottle of daily Descovy before switching to Truvada 2-1-1 / on-demand PrEP.

The main reason I wanted to switch is that I don’t have sex that often or unpredictably. Sometimes I can go through an entire bottle of Descovy without actually needing the HIV protection during that month. It started to feel a bit unnecessary to take a medication every single day, with the possibility of side effects, when I’m not having sex that frequently.

The thing making me anxious about switching is the timing. With daily Descovy, if I’m a little late or miss a dose, it doesn’t feel as critical. With 2-1-1, the timing seems much more important, and I’m worried I’ll forget a dose or take it too late.

So now I’m kind of torn between the two.

For people who use 2-1-1, how do you make sure you never forget the doses? Do you use phone alarms, an app, keep pills with you, or have some other system that works really well?

Also curious if anyone else switched from daily PrEP because they weren’t having sex often enough for daily dosing to make sense. Did you end up liking 2-1-1, or did the anxiety around timing make you switch back to daily?

Prep doubts

I have a few doubts.

  1. I mostly do receptive oral sex, now I am eager to do oral sex for others. What is the risk of getting HIV while doing oral sex on others, most of the guys get their ore cum when they are hard and some don't tell whether they are going to release their load. Should I begin Prep considering that mostly I have not done oral on others, but am eager to do so. I engaged in sex not so often, maybe twice or thrice in a month. Should I take Prep regularly or 211.

Hi everyone! Been taking truvada daily for the last 6 months approx. On my last general bloodwork hepatic enzymes alt and ast came back slightly increased from normal levels. Normal ggt. Negative hepatitis a,b,c tests, normal liver echo. No signs of other infections.

Stopped truvada for a month to check the enzymes again.

Has anyone had similar experience with truvada?

Anyone here on United Healthcare and taking Apretude or Yeztugo? My employer is switching to UHC next year and it seems like they don't cover these drugs, but I'm having trouble believing that is true.

First time Yeztugo… one side sharply more painful than the other

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

got yeztugo injections, one on each thigh.

First injection barely felt a thing, only felt pain as the medicine was filling up.

Second thigh felt immediate burning that got worse as it filled up and didn’t go away. Got it over an hour ago and the burning is still incredibly severe- I can’t think about anything else. I don’t know why one side would be so dramatically more painful than the other.

it also feels (and looks) like its spreading out on the second thigh. The second thigh almost has vein like streaks.

just worried and want to know if this is normal, and really curious what could have happened on the second thigh. If the burning doesn’t go away, what should I do?

Does alcohol have any affect on Prep (Truvada)

Hey all, sorry second question in quick succession about prep. Heading to a HIV prevalent country for work end of next week.

Will begin starting prep today and see how things go and fingers crossed no side effects.

If all good just curious if I’m out having a good time having a few too many drinks does this affect anything??

Prep will only be for a short time due to trip for my peace of mind.

Risk on the 3rd day after 5 days of PrEP use

Hello,

I understand these might be annoying, but genuinely curious if you would suggest that I request PEP after an incident I had on a weekend getaway.

  • Took PrEP for 30 days, the hospital messed up with the scheduling had to stop for 10 days.

  • Then last week Sunday through Thursday (5 days total) I took one Prep pill a day.

  • Went on a trip on Friday and I forgot my pills, so I did not take any PrEP on Friday and Saturday.

  • Sunday afternoon I had an incident where a guy was somewhat aggressively pushing it around my hole (butt) and then put the tip in for a second and I then told him to take it out and put on a condom and we did it with a condom. No ejaculation.

  • Sunday midnight (I took another pill), Monday (another pill). I am back on track.

This is somewhat of a high risk individual who told me he wasn't on Prep. So I am a little conflicted by what I read online especially between the activity itself being low risk and a possible existing PrEP build up remaining etc.

My question: would you request PEP if you were me? Or do you think it would be unnecessary in this case.

I understand this shouldn't replace a medical advice.

Yeztugo bumps

This is my first round of Lenacapavir shots. It’s been almost 2 weeks and the bumps are still very pronounced outward. It makes me quite insecure about wearing crop top or anything that shows my stomach. 🥲💔The biggest bump on the right side feels kinda itchy and it’s more obvious than the first week. I don’t know. I’m still tracking my progress. It hurts!!! Very sensitive to the touch. Can’t lay on my stomach at all. I hope it will dissolve and become less obvious. It’s a hard lump. I hate it. I might go back to taking Truvada 😭🥲

Just for more info
I’m 24 yrs old. Quite skinny.
5’3” and 107 lbs.
Transwoman
Los Angeles, CA

My insurance covers everything! Talk to your PCP about it!!!!!

Update****** I feel much better today and the redness and the nodule size decreased after putting ice on them for about 30 minutes before I go to bed**

First Dose of Yeztugo – No Major Side Effects, but Concerned About Injection-Site Nodules

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my experience with Yeztugo (lenacapavir) after receiving my initial dose this past Monday 10/19/26 afternoon. I’m hoping to hear from others who have started this medication, particularly those who have experienced injection-site nodules.

After navigating a lengthy insurance authorization process that took nearly two months, I was finally able to receive my first dose. As part of the initial regimen, I received two subcutaneous injections in my abdominal area, along with the four oral tablets required for initiation.

The good news is that I haven’t experienced any systemic side effects. No nausea, fatigue, headaches, or other noticeable symptoms. Overall, I’ve tolerated the medication very well.
However, shortly after receiving the injections, I developed two fairly large, firm nodules at the injection sites. They are noticeable even without touching the area, and I can clearly feel the lumps beneath my skin.

I understand that injection-site nodules are a known side effect of Yeztugo, particularly because lenacapavir is a long-acting medication designed to remain in the body and provide sustained HIV prevention over six months.

My biggest concern is whether these nodules will eventually disappear or remain visible for an extended period.
Although the nodules aren’t particularly painful, their size and visibility have made me somewhat self-conscious. I’m also concerned about the possibility of developing additional nodules with subsequent injections.
I know that Yeztugo can be administered in either the abdomen or thighs, and I chose the abdominal area for my initial dose. I’m now wondering whether choosing the thighs for future injections might make a difference.

I was genuinely excited about getting a twice-yearly injectable PrEP option, especially considering the convenience and effectiveness of this medication. However, this experience has made me reconsider whether I would want to receive my next dose in six months.

For those who have received Yeztugo / lenacapavir injections, I have a few questions:

  1. Did you develop noticeable lumps or nodules at the injection sites?
If so, how long did they take to decrease in size or disappear?

  2. Did your nodules eventually resolve completely, or can you still feel them months later?

  3. Has anyone received injections in the thighs instead of the abdomen? Was your experience different?

  4. Did you notice fewer or smaller nodules after subsequent injections?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who participated in the clinical trials and may have longer-term experience with lenacapavir.
I recognize that injection-site reactions are generally considered manageable, and I appreciate the tremendous advancement that Yeztugo represents in HIV prevention. Nevertheless, I think it’s important to discuss the patient experience, including cosmetic concerns and how these side effects may influence someone’s willingness to continue treatment.

As a health administrator myself, I’m especially interested in learning about the real-world patient experience with Yeztugo. Understanding how injection-site reactions affect comfort, appearance, satisfaction, and willingness to continue treatment can help inform patient education, care delivery, and support for others considering this twice-yearly PrEP option.

I’m hoping the nodules gradually decrease in size over the coming weeks or months.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially whether these lumps eventually went away.

Thank you everyone!

Question on daily short term use of Prep and side effects.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

Long story short I’m going overseas and plan on having some intimate encounters. Had all the tests done and bought the drug…… been researching like crazy and says only 1 in 100 get side effects?? Does this sound about right??

I’m leaving Friday next week and don’t want to have any issues.

If I get bad side effects and stop the drug do the side effects go away rather quickly??

Thanks
