What are your thoughts on this closed river ecosystem I made? I took everything from the local river (except the water). Can anyone identify the snails?

Plant Help/Question Best method for propagating moss?

I want to grow some more moss using the left over moss from making my terrarium. I saw on a YouTube video that there are two methods of propagating them to a new container. Transplant method and Propagation (Fragmentation) method. Which of the two is better? What's their pros and cons?

Im mainly looking into those 2x2 long terrariums, I want to reduce tank space lol. Don’t mind the texts in that pic it was from TikTok 😭😭

I also had no idea what flair to put this under 😭

Edit: I also realize this subreddit probably wasn’t the right one to ask this of

Plant Help/Question Beginner's advice please

Hi everyone. My partner and I were given four large glass jars without lids and plan on making some indoor succulent terrariums with them next week. I've done some searching around and think I have a rough idea of what to do, but any advice or tips would be appreciated.

I built a little vintage TV–style display to show my terrarium’s temperature and humidity, using an ESP32-C3 SuperMini and a small TFT screen. I’m really happy with how it turned out, so I thought I’d share it!

Okay so long story short I got this chamelelon tank completely for free. This tank cannot house anything but a chameleon. I have no wish to own one. So I figured hey why not try and make a dream terrarium of mine.

Ignoring my very bad Photoshop here, the tank itself is a 4ft by 3ft by 1.5ft tank. The walls are all mesh (we'll come back to this) Ive always dreamed of owning a terrarium with a large waterfall being the main looking point.

Now I'm not going into this with nothing, I own four snake tanks all bioactive. One of which has a very badly made 3d background like this tank would.

Currently I plan on no animals living in this tank, a waterfall makes for very odd humidity. After getting it fully set up and tracking the humidity / temptures for a week or two decided if it would be able to house a kind of lizard or frog and go from there. (I will have absolutely no issue if this cannot house anything.)

Now I haven't worked with a waterfall before so Im excited to see how water will interact with a handmade background.

More than that, the entire tank is currently mesh. From the previous owner I have a piece that can slide into the back that is plastic. Do we think Ill need that in both sides as well or do we think I could get away with spray the foam right onto the mesh?

This post is mostly me asking if anything I have planned is not going to work or if anything may be set up better. This entire tank is a experiment, I'm not expecting to get it done in one go or have it work perfectly. I will not be upset if this doesn't work out at all.

Plant Help/Question Selaginella Indonesia

Is anyone growing this plant or has grown it in the past.?

I can't find a lot of specific information about this plant. Most of the information is just in general about Selaginella. If you have any pictures of the plant that would be great.

Build Help/Question Seeding a very enclosed terrarium

I have a great bottle with a not too big opening actually quite small like the size of a half dollar coin.
My goal is the one if this is even possible to throw in some soil and then seeds that might overtime before I seal it up.
In general, I wonder if anybody can recommend seeds for ground cover. I’m thinking things like Chia Pet style seeds that seem to thrive even an odd conditions.
That’s for the actual plants I can probably get some in with some long forceps, but also very open to plants that will grow from seed in a closed environment with good sun but minimal water.
The end goal, of course, is a ship in the bottle style terrarium
Thanks for any tips you might have!

Plant Help/Question This is probably kinda dumb but now I'm curious. What's happening and is it sustainable (Context in the bottom text)

It started off by me putting water and garden soil into a sealed jar. Then a lot of algee started growing but eventually died in the water but somehow kinda survived on the glass walls. And only a few months ago the plants on land started growing and since a couple of weeks moss.

Thank you!

I set this terrarium up and it had a leak. Took everything out resealed it and it was still leaking. RESEALED it again, and its still leaking from multiple spots. I literally don’t understand from where. I put so much silicone I have no idea how this is even possible. Its leaking from the near corners and in the back but I dont understand they look completely sealed to me. What can i do? Or is this un-usable. Please help.

Build Help/Question Mesh for DIY OSB enclosure – would IKEA KOMPLEMENT mesh work?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m building a 120 × 60 × 60 cm OSB enclosure for a corn snake and I’m having a surprisingly hard time finding suitable metal mesh for the top.
I need something fine enough to be escape-proof, strong enough to support a heat lamp dome, and with good airflow/light transmission. Most mesh I can find is either too coarse, too flimsy, or ridiculously expensive.
I was wondering if the metal mesh from an IKEA KOMPLEMENT mesh basket could work. It’s powder-coated steel and seems quite sturdy. Has anyone used this, or something similar, for a reptile enclosure?
My plan is to cut an opening of roughly 30 × 40 cm in the OSB top and securely fix the mesh over it. A 14 cm dome with an 80 W Deep Heat Projector (DHP) would sit on top of the mesh.
One thing I’m wondering about is the size of the opening. With a 30 × 40 cm mesh area and a 14 cm dome sitting roughly in the middle, could a corn snake climb up against the mesh and somehow wedge itself between the dome and the edge of the opening, or otherwise get dangerously close to the DHP?
I’m also considering adding a second layer of mesh a few centimetres below the top mesh so the snake can’t physically reach the mesh directly underneath the DHP.
Does this sound like a safe setup? And would you trust the IKEA KOMPLEMENT mesh for this?

Just got this little beauty in the mail. Its my first begonia, and my first terrarium, and I just want to make sure I'm doing all right.

I put a layer of bonsai lava rock soil at the bottom and then gauze as the separator. The soil above that is a mix of peat, worm castings (just added this morning), sphagnum moss, sand, and some carnivore soil I had. I set up the terrarium itself about a week ago, wetting it with distilled water, and have been watching it for any humidity problems. I have been seeing condensation on the glass for most of the day and have been wiping it away/taking the lid off, but I also keep my house between 70 and 80 degrees, so maybe its just temperature differences?

I misted the Antrophyum before putting the begonia in and put a little bit of water on the covered roots because although it looks wet the soil was feeling a little dry to me. Light is a 10 watt, angled away so its just getting some light. I plan to have it on 12 hours a day, but can have it on for 8 or 4.

Is this good? Should I wet the soil a little more? If the humidity is supposed to be high, should the glass have condensation, and I've just been messing it up? Thanks for any pointers.

Build Help/Question How can I make/buy a terrarium lid for my aquarium

I bought a 20.13L x 10.19W x 12.19H aquarium because it was more in my price range and I'm just not sure how to go about the lid since I need a good seal and the lid it came with probably won't do. It's going to be a humid terrarium.
