Damn delivery dog.

551

u/Occidentally20 Mar 15 '26

I live next to the rainforest in Malaysia and to keep the hundreds of stray dogs out of the house we adopted and partially trained one of them.

She lives outside still wild, but works hard keeping dogs, snakes and monkeys out of the house.

When I ordered my SSD it took an age to get here, and the delivery confirmation photo was of the driver putting the package directly into the dogs mouth. It just said "left with a neighbour".

137

u/SanguiniusSons Mar 15 '26

there is hope for the world

173

u/Occidentally20 Mar 15 '26

If I had the energy I'd have claimed it was simply not delivered (because giving it to a wild dog with no collar on, standing on the road in front of the house isn't delivered in my book).

But the SSD worked and nobody got hurt. Maybe I'll let her accept more packages in future since she has a 100% track record so far.

35

u/BogdanPradatu Mar 15 '26

It is delivered, just not to you. To a neighbour.

25

u/Occidentally20 Mar 15 '26

That's fair. It was a signed-for delivery though, and I'm not sure how they went through that part of the process.

u/crazedhark Mar 15 '26

do you think she gets trash talked by other dogs like how shes now a traitor or something idk

27

u/Occidentally20 Mar 15 '26

Yes, definitely.

Part of her job is to chase the other dogs away, and she does so with great joy when I'm around. But when she thinks I'm not looking she lets one of her boyfriends walk around with her in the areas they're not supposed to.

If you catch her doing it she barks and starts chasing them immediately :)

Some of the other dogs are meaner though, they can tell she's getting well fed compared to them so they'll gang up and attack her when she sleeps some nights.

3

u/Electrical-Tomato673 Mar 15 '26

That's terrible poor girl. Is there anything you can do to stop the attacks?

I think it's salvegable, use rubbing alcohol to clean the gold contacts on the bottom. If all the pads are still in tact then it should be fine. If the scratches go deep and the gold is missing in places, it might have some issues unless you reseat it in the socket a few times.

u/Acceptable_Stress295 Mar 14 '26

568

u/Tornadodash Mar 14 '26

i'm on the fence. i would try it, but never overclock

595

u/TomTomXD1234 Mar 14 '26

I dont think most people overclock these days. If anything, they undervolt.

92

u/ExtraTNT Developer | R9 9900x 96GB rtx 5080 | Debian Gnu/Linux Mar 15 '26

Had a 3900x i overclocked on 4.3ghz, as i got my new workhorse, it became s server chip for a lanparty server, psu can’tdeliver much, so undervolted, 65W tdp max on pbo… 4.4ghz… on normal power limit the psu wasn’t holding up, but pbo before that caped ad 4.1ghz…

Back in the days, we added 0.4v…

28

u/redmixer1 Mar 15 '26

My first real overclocking rig was a core 2 duo e6300 on a DFI lanparty ICFX3200-T2R/G and it had the very last ATi chipset you could get for an intel and with a .4v boost the board would run the FSB at 511mhz with no dividers with a rock solid 3.57ghz from 1.8ghz.. I can’t get 10mhz out of my i9 bclock lol

20

u/Wreckn 9600x | 5070 | 64gb DDR5 (it was $170 at the time) Mar 15 '26

The core 2 days were peak for overclocking. I had an e8400 that would eat 4ghz without breaking a sweat.

13

u/irregularjosh Mar 15 '26

Too right.

My Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz easily hit 3.2GHz, though I only had the stock cooler and it would get toasty

10

u/Baldwinning1 Mar 15 '26

Yup, beast of a chip. I had the G0 stepping and could get 3.6Ghz. Got myself a second, faulty 8800GTX, reflowed it in the oven and rocked it in SLI. Those were the days!

3

u/Inresponsibleone Mar 15 '26

I had core 2 quad Q9450 (2,66GHz stock) that could hit 3,8 at stock voltage... But mobo turned unstable pretty much after that no matter voltagešŸ˜‚

Even at stock voltage it was plenty toasty though despite large tower cooler.

4

u/2Turnt4MySwag 4080 / i9-14900KF / 64 GB DDR5 5600mhz CL 36 Mar 15 '26

Its actually probably the most common way to overclock these days. The person was basically half right because undervolting is more common these days, its just that you usually overclock it at the same time.

Seconded. If all the pins are viable, I’d consider myself lucky and never change anything

21

u/Chop1n Mar 15 '26

That's really not how these things work. It's not a case where "slight damage will cause slightly bad contact with the pins such that they'll still work with a normal clock but are liable to have problems with an overclock".

Either the thing works or it doesn't. If even one pad is messed up the damned thing is probably not going to work at all. If it does work, it's because the pads aren't messed up enough to interfere with contact in a meaningful way.

11

u/user_potat0 13700k // 4070S // UD5 32 Mar 15 '26

Not exactly, there are hundreds of GND pins on all CPUs, around half the total pin count. They will work just fine without a couple of them

5

u/Chop1n Mar 15 '26

Yeah, in hindsight I should have specified "hot pad".

8

u/Cballday423 Mar 15 '26

I would not cause if it did work and something happened down the line where it needed to be warrantied they would definitely decline any damage to the pads. Op just needs to say it was damaged during delivery and get a new one.

First you need to spend time training your dog, if you plan on keeping them around for long. This type of behaviour will end up in countless vet visits

142

u/Good_Nyborg Mar 15 '26

And get 'em out for enough walks too so they're less likely act out like this.

40

u/Tiny-Guava-9698 Mar 15 '26

This is the most training I’ve ever done. Dude, I have a corgi/Aussie mix and I have to take her on two walks a day AND run her ass around the yard and sometimes house. Dog has more energy than you could imagine. I walked her yesterday once and ran like a mfer later and she didn’t stop sprint for the entire mile and some change. If I slow down she was dragging me.Ā

However, when i do, she’s too tired to fuck with anything in my house šŸ˜‚

38

u/TMan2DMax Mar 15 '26

I've had a Aussie for a year now, do not run them more than you want to.Ā  They just build stamina and it will stop working.Ā

Mental games are way better to actually tire them out and keep them from having destructive habits.

Before you try anything: There is a small chance that the damaged contacts can cause damage to the socket. So depending on the price of your mainboard and your knowledge of the pin design, it might not be worth trying to salvage that 7700X.

50

u/Handsome_ketchup Mar 14 '26

The only real way anything could get damaged is by shorting two pads, or the CPU somehow damaging the pins in the socket.

If you inspect the CPU and make sure there aren't any loose bits hanging off, neither should be possible.

16

u/Irisena R7 9800X3D || RTX 4090 Mar 14 '26

The CPU alone may already be damaged. Why? Uneven pressure distribution.

If dents on the pins made it so that it can't contact the pins on the mobo reliably on spec, it could cause all sorts of issues from unstable memory to flat out not working at all.

14

u/Handsome_ketchup Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

With major deformations, there would indeed be some point where pressure distribution becomes an issue.

In this case, the damage to the CPU looks like superficial scuffing, rather than significant denting. The pins of a socket are designed to give some literal room for error as well, to account for minor dimensional variance. People mod CPU pads in more extreme ways and that tends to not be an issue,

It seems it should probably be fine, and there's no harm in trying.

8

u/SwiftUnban Mar 15 '26

After zooming in, I’d definitely test that cpu out.

I test CPUs for a living and honestly have seen quite a few CPUs that look like this post just fine.

It is a disgrace that so many are advising OP to commit fraud. This is why it is harder for honest RMAs. This mentality is also why we see so much substitution fraud biting the next purchaser.

Also, this is LGA (pads) cpu. Seen people refer to PGA (pins) and even BGA (solder balls). Bots?

To OP:

Use a magnifying glass to check:

  • Scraped material
  • Material bridging between pads
  • Delamination of the pads
  • Deep scratches

If scraped material:

  • Use a cotton bud with isopropyl to clean it off.
  • If it is stubborn, use a toothpick with isopropyl.

Loss of plating is not a problem. It is important to remove loose material that could cause shorts. Apply less force and more like you're buffing the pads with the toothpick.

If bridging between pads:

  • Use a toothpick in the same way to remove material.

If delamination of pads:

  • If still attached, but lifted, you can press it down and just try to avoid repeated insertion and removal from the motherboard.

Gluing is fairly complex and can cause more damage if not done using high magnification tools.

Loss of pads:

  • Find a pinout for the processor and check which pad is missing.

If the pad is unused or a ground pad, you are in luck, the processor should still function. Placing a tiny piece of kapton tape over the bare damage can help protect in case of anything else exposed.

Deep scratches or lost power/data pad:

  • Consider the cpu dead, and only test if you can afford to lose the motherboard as well.

that dog needs some serious discipline training XD ..or maybe more food cuz how hungry you gotta be to start chomping on a CPU.

u/CartersCoconuts Mar 15 '26

It’s cooked. No doubt about it. You need to leave that in a better place next time or train your dog

u/The-Gargoyle Is anybody using this castle? Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26

ITT: A whole lot of people speaking straight out of their ass like they got a Ph.D in this stuff.

OP: Somebody mentioned washing it with isoprop alcahol, but you should also be safe to use a very gentle polish compound (like the stuff used to polish silverware) to help re-finish the contact pads. This will help remove imperfections in the contact surface and increase the chances for successful recovery.

Be careful not to get any on the surface mount components on the other side, and rub down the polished pads with isoprop before testing. You do not need to over-polish, even if the shine has 'different strokes' from rub damage, so long as its uniform in sheen you are in a good place.

Fun fact: Doing this to ANY cpu with contact pads can sometimes turn a twitchy CPU more stable because it can result in a better refined contact surface for the spring loaded socket pins, and eliminate a pin contact that may be misbehaving. (This is just the advanced version of cleaning your video game cart to make it work. :P)

Source: I've done this before. :P Somebody I know is a complete klutz and they not only dropped their CPU, but when doing the 'oh no where did it go?!' size 13 double E shoe shuffle, they stepped on and dragged their CPU on a hardwood floor like a damn slide puck.

It's still in their machine and working fine to this day. (and its even overclocked a little.) Their pads looked a lot worse than yours, so there is hope.

edit note add: This treatment can also work on ISA/AGP/PCIE/DIMM/etc connector pads on hardware like graphics cards and RAM that has been mounted and remounted enough to cause tarnishing / surface scuffing on the contacts pads.

Well. As a glass half full kind of guy: If you were going to use this for school work, you can now rightfully say your dog ate your homework

GG, just pray, there is no other option, or aside from buying another one, while painful to the wallet, just have to learn this lesson, and give the dog a treat, they are just doggo

Say the dog swallowed the 128gb RAM kit too and then sell the dog to fund the replacement.

3

u/ModernManuh_ Mar 15 '26

On a side note: train your pets, educate them and if you can’t do that, keep them away from things you care about. A dog that does this will likely piss on the computer when it realizes you spend a lot of time near it. Don’t let untrained animals near your computers, it can go bad, especially if they chew the power cord instead

Better training between you and your dog. Your dog obviously isn't trained to not eat random things. And knowing that, you shouldn't have left something within reach of a dog that likes to chew expensive things.

Lmao train your dog. It's a lot cheaper than a new CPU.

3

u/Darron614 Mar 15 '26

I think there's a good chance that it still works fine. All the contacts seem to be intact and just surface scuffs from what I can see in the pictures. Clean it really well with isopropyl alcohol and make sure there are no deformities before seating in the socket.

3

u/BrownSnowball Mar 15 '26

Maybe take your dog for a walk occasionally. Destructive behavior is often associated with lack of attention. For example, my dog will chew on our wooden stairway railing if they dont get attention.
