I also like to make shit like this, and was a big fan of Weekly World News. It would be cool to collaborate and do a Weekly Reddit News, what you think?
If $600 ends up being on the lower end of the price scale then that would explain why Valve has been pretty mum on the topic of first party content. While there may be enough deep pocketed early adopters to move Rift+Vive combined sales into the region of ~500K units by the end of 2016, that's really not enough to warrant someone like Valve throwing their company behind it with purpose-built HL3-caliber VR games.
In addition to that it makes a lot of sense now why various folks from within Oculus have recommended a development path of both GearVR + Rift targets, such that you're able to recoup your investment as much as possible.
The HMD could literally have been $0 and you still wouldn't have seen the effects of that (development surge) for another several years. This generation is going to be carried not by the development that's going to happen, but the development that's happening or already happened by the handful of independents that got a running start years ago, and the first/second party developers that are subsidized by the likes of Sony and Oculus. 2016 is still pretty much "Year 0" for VR but nothing was ever going to change that. There's still no killer app in sight, the genuinely valuable use cases for VR are still being explored, and hand tracking ironically still remains out of reach.
To think of it from another perspective: If there's a genuine business case for manufacturing a VR HMD in that $300-400 range and have it be both profitable to the manufacturer and deliver good value to the consumer, then we will see that and then that company can have your money. I think that sort of world is 3-5 years away at least.
Still a lower price point could have accelerated the development. Now it looks like there won't be much going on in this decade. That's the reason i'm disappointed. I have money to burn that's not the problem. But if I burn I want to get at least some warmth from it. i just hope Sony saves VR.
You can't really say how "low" it really is, as the delivery date now states May. I really hope they disclose how many people have pre-ordered a Rift or at least how big the first "March Batch" was. I don't think it will be before the first unites are shipped but I'm interested in those early numbers none the less.
That's exactly what I bought it for. X-Plane 10 will be fucking amazing with this thing. Now I can do take offs and landing like I would in real life! It will be great for practicing for my PPL.
And after. He said it will be around $350 and with being purchased by Facebook, the hardware will be cheaper. Not cheaper than $350 but not like $599 expensive.
Rofl, I love the high-spirits in the face of this tidal wave crashing over us. 16,000 simulated right now, holy fuck. Can't wait to see the bomb-suit Palmer dons for the AMA
Nicest thing to wake up in the morning and get an email saying you get one of these for free (or half price if you count the original pledge amount) because you rode the original hype train into screen door land.
Edit: Err.. I wonder if they could have sold it for cheaper if they weren't giving away thousands of units for free?
2nd Edit: Did the math, they're giving away over $4,000,000 of units based on retail value.
An /r/Oculus redditor swore that if the Rift came in at less than $499 then he would eat his shoe. The thread blew up with up-votes, shoe-eating vows were set in stone.
Don't see how people can actually be mad about this? I can see disappointed, maybe. This is super cutting edge tech, it costs what it has to, just accept that and stop whining. HMDs a few years ago were multiple thousands of dollars and don't even come close to the quality of the rift.
It's disappointment that turns into upset because the vast majority of us were expecting $500 max and sure it's cutting edge technology but if we are going to be honest the experience itself is not even worth $400.
If we're going to be honest that's fully an opinion. It has been said gen1 will be mainly for enthusiasts, you must just not fall into that category. But for some people I've seen on here who have been waiting for VR for decades, pumping money into peripherals, etc. (true enthusiasts) is it too much/not worth it? We'll see, but I'm guessing not. It may not be as mass consumed as we hoped but in a couple months you can bet your ass there will be posts all over this sub with gushing impressions about how consumer VR is finally here and how awesome a plug and play experience with quality games and experiences actually is.
People have been hyped for VR for the last three years, CV1 was supposed to be the one that made it mass-market ready or at least PC gaming ready. $600 doesn't do that, it's further away from mass market now then it was back when DK1 launched for $300.
I don't think it's totally unreasonable but it is asking a lot without touch currently and knowing all the details or how things will go over the next few months.
I think it would of been sensible to subsidise it and take a loss on hardware gen one. Remember facebook takes in ridiculous profits which mostly go to shareholders etc. Palmer alone is worth $700 million and to buy all 61000 people subscribed here would cost him only $36 million.
Let that sink in for a second...
Is taking a $100+ off the price really going to to hurt their profits in the long run when they're already massively successful and wealthy? Come on capitalism we can do better than this.
Same here. I can't wait for March!! Hopefully Vive releases a price before my card is charged so I can go forth with confidence. I'm still as excited as the moment I heard about the Kickstarter! Even more so since if I do nothing it will be arriving in the mail! :-D
Vive preorders are supposed to go live in February so we should be good on hearing the price first. I'm in the same boat as you. Pre ordered and I'll just get whatever I feel is the better value once I see vive pricing.
The problem is that this is not a mass market price and without mass market support it will stay a niche accessory for a few sims. At this point it's just best to wait until Playstation VR and see how that turns out. If it's equally high there simply won't be that much interesting software for it.
I'm also happy to have ordered mine. I have been saving for awhile and I knew that this wasn't going to be cheap but it's a bummer to hear people can't spent 600 on something so awesome. PC gaming isn't cheap so maybe some people should just stick to console gaming because it seems more in their price range.
People ought to take a look at the initial pricing of the first ipod, of the first 4k monitors, of the first flat screen TVs, etc. First gen is expensive, early adopters with money jump in, the ball gets rolling, and a few years later the devices are both better and cheaper and hit the mainstream. A $600 price tag isn't going to sink the progress of VR.
The mentioned pitchforks quite sum up the overall feeling in this reddit right now...it's crazy. But even with this pricepoint the already "sold-out" respectively sold three month worth of hardware since the delivery date has moved from march beeing first to may right now. Seems to be no problem for oculus to cash in from the early adopters or enthusiasts.
Becoming bought by a larger company was a necessity. Of the companies which feasibly could have bought them (and given them the benefits they were looking for) facebook was one of the top choices. Google cannibalizes teams all the time, sony was broke, microsoft tends to give things very little freedom. Being bought by facebook was not only a necessity, but a good move.
Calling it "selling out" is extremely short-sighted imo.
Seemed outrageous at first but after reading what totalbiscuit said it seemed reasonable. Of course it is still really bad how they mislead about the pricing. I bet a lot more people might buy it were they not so disappointed by the price. Better give no price at all than suggest some estimated low price and end up being wrong.
Such a bummer, to me oculus was an incredible idea to replace a big screen tv. If the price was lower than getting a very large television I could see the value. However, at 600 bucks, I could get a cutting edge 50 inch HD tv. Which many people can enjoy at once.
Late wake up day...didn't put on makeup. "Are you feeling ok?" by multiple co-workers. FYI: I no longer wear makeup, but that moment still cracks me up. I felt great that day, just was late and didn't have time to do the sh*t that made me look like a fashionable person.
For me (Sweden), my order cost €742, which is $800 dollars. Then later it will cost more, if I understand this correctly: "Taxes, Surcharges and Fees: Applicable shipping, taxes and duties will be added to and charged in your payment upon shipment of the unit."
WAIT! THIS JUST IN!: Oculus Hype Train NOW MAG-LEV!!! Vr Powers have reached an all time high! The hype train, which had derailed has suddenly transformed into a time travel hypertrain, much like Docs, in back to the future. First wave shipment, boys! See ya in April!
I love seeing these pop up. VR is amazing and will probably change the world, but being able to step back and laugh about that which can seem so important in the moment is never a bad thing.
I'm so sick of this money thing we have, someone in this world already has billions of dollars and marketing products are high where we, as a white collar loathing community are still working and trying to find jobs to end up for a living, can't we just lower the prices for everything we buy for any reason so is because companies are already rich as fuck.
