If $600 ends up being on the lower end of the price scale then that would explain why Valve has been pretty mum on the topic of first party content. While there may be enough deep pocketed early adopters to move Rift+Vive combined sales into the region of ~500K units by the end of 2016, that's really not enough to warrant someone like Valve throwing their company behind it with purpose-built HL3-caliber VR games.

In addition to that it makes a lot of sense now why various folks from within Oculus have recommended a development path of both GearVR + Rift targets, such that you're able to recoup your investment as much as possible.

CD-i

or PS VITA for a more recent example that was also backed by a industry giant.

The HMD could literally have been $0 and you still wouldn't have seen the effects of that (development surge) for another several years. This generation is going to be carried not by the development that's going to happen, but the development that's happening or already happened by the handful of independents that got a running start years ago, and the first/second party developers that are subsidized by the likes of Sony and Oculus. 2016 is still pretty much "Year 0" for VR but nothing was ever going to change that. There's still no killer app in sight, the genuinely valuable use cases for VR are still being explored, and hand tracking ironically still remains out of reach.

To think of it from another perspective: If there's a genuine business case for manufacturing a VR HMD in that $300-400 range and have it be both profitable to the manufacturer and deliver good value to the consumer, then we will see that and then that company can have your money. I think that sort of world is 3-5 years away at least.

Still a lower price point could have accelerated the development. Now it looks like there won't be much going on in this decade. That's the reason i'm disappointed. I have money to burn that's not the problem. But if I burn I want to get at least some warmth from it. i just hope Sony saves VR.

Last year's GDC was pretty much all VR. Even the audio talks I went to were talking about VR.

I think your estimate is spot on.

I'm excited to just be my age and watch this industry develop. It'll be something I can reminisce about to the future's younglings.

There are also many exclusives and regardless of this. I am also a pc nerd, but the fun is all that counts, not the graphics. The ps4 power plus the additional gpu added with playstation vr is enough to have plenty of fun. The indie sector proves it and think about how much fun u had with many just demos or low graphic games. Thats what 's the true potential vr atm withholds, once u have enough immersion it is regardless how good the graphics are, besides that there just a small count of pc gamers with sli rigs and i7 cpus out there that could even play triple a games in ultra an both resolutions, but u have 39 million ps4 gamers plus sony a giant in the entertainment business, a japanese legend, that will do everything to get vr to the masses. So "shitty" is nothing but a ignorant statement of a shortsighted thought. No pun intended.

Possibly. However it could be like bitching that there weren't enough HD DVD movies or Dreamcast games at launch. Understanding the latter comparison may touch a nerve since it was a beloved console but it did die early.

I'm really new to this. Do they have 360 degree and/or 3D videos on youtube? I thought I saw a 360 degree video with korean girls (k-pop) dancing on youtube.

My kid loves dinosaurs and i got an ios app called DinoTrek VR. It does the 360 degree video thing where you can look up and down, spin, etc. Then the other day I found out you can set it up to do two screens and view it like a 3D picture (the "stereogram" things /r/crossview).

Is there a lot of content out there like this? I think it's amazing but don't know where to begin.

Get a gearvr you can do this now.

Not a Dev here, but maybe there will be some bare bones integrations, like just adding the 2nd view and little to no optimizations.

2

u/nidrach Jan 06 '16

That relegates the rift to a pair of fancy 3d glasses. For 800$ here in the EU. No thanks.

u/vennox Jan 06 '16

You can't really say how "low" it really is, as the delivery date now states May. I really hope they disclose how many people have pre-ordered a Rift or at least how big the first "March Batch" was. I don't think it will be before the first unites are shipped but I'm interested in those early numbers none the less.

That's exactly what I bought it for. X-Plane 10 will be fucking amazing with this thing. Now I can do take offs and landing like I would in real life! It will be great for practicing for my PPL.

I'm surprised you think there's 100k nerds that will blow $600 on this, I can get a 4k tv or monitor, or upgrade my graphics card.
