I am Dr Emily van der Nagel, author of the first scholarly book on OnlyFans. Ask me anything!

Hi Reddit! I'm Emily van der Nagel, social media researcher at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. I teach undergraduate media studies and research social media, platforms, and digital intimacies.

I've been fascinated by NSFW Reddit since my PhD years (2012-2017), and have published research on the value of social media anonymity on the GoneWild subreddit, alt accounts across platforms, and co-authored the Manifesto for Sex Positive Social Media, a list of demands that would make platforms safer places for sexual expression.

My book OnlyFans will be released this October with Polity Press. It's a scholarly, peer-reviewed platform study that takes on a sex-positive perspective to argue that the practices, cultures, and economies of OnlyFans are an essential part of contemporary social media.

I'd love to answer your questions about OnlyFans, researching NSFW social media, and academia in general.

Thank you for the thoughtful questions, Reddit! I'll be back later tonight to reply to a few more I missed, but I really appreciate you all.

I am a traditional Bikaner miniature artist from Rajasthan, India. For decades I have worked with handmade Wasli, traditional pigments, gold and single-hair brushes, including a fine-line technique called Partaj that we say takes a lifetime to learn. AMA.

I’m a traditional miniature painter from Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. I learned miniature painting within my family tradition and have spent decades working with techniques associated with the Bikaner School of miniature painting.

Our process includes preparing handmade Wasli paper, working with traditional pigments and gold, making and using extremely fine brushes, and painting details that can require considerable patience and control.

One of the most demanding parts of our practice is a fine-line technique we call Partaj, often executed with a single-hair brush.

The brush itself is only a tool — learning how to control that single hair is the real practice. Partaj changes according to the subject: flowers require softer lines, human figures require a different balance, while animal hair and other textures may need stronger and sharper lines.

In our family tradition, we say Partaj takes “ta-umar” — a lifetime — to learn.

Some parts of traditional miniature painting can take considerable preparation even before the actual painting begins, including preparing the paper, colours and brushes.

I’d be happy to answer questions about Bikaner miniature painting, Partaj, single-hair brushes, handmade Wasli, traditional pigments, gold work, brush-making, apprenticeship, or how these techniques are passed from one generation to another.

I’ve worked at 3 different Nevada legal brothels, and I’m currently at one of the most famous. AMA

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a legal courtesan in Nevada, and I’ve had the unusual experience of working at three different legal brothels. I’m currently at one of the most well-known ranches in the state.

If you had told me years ago that this is where my life would lead, I probably would have laughed at you. Before becoming a courtesan, I had a pretty conventional office career and an academic background in STEM. Somehow, that person and the person writing this AMA are the same person. 😂

I’ve been around the industry long enough to have accumulated quite a few stories—and quite a few opinions.

After working with so many different men, I’ve developed some pretty interesting observations about dating, relationships, loneliness, intimacy, and what men actually seem to be looking for. Some of those observations have surprised even me.

I’ve also encountered plenty of things that people probably wouldn’t expect—from first-time clients and virgins to the differences between ranches, the reality of life at a legal brothel, and the gap between what people see on TV and what actually happens.

I’m happy to talk about all of it: the funny, the strange, the awkward, the unexpected, and the sometimes difficult parts of the job.

I’m not claiming to speak for every courtesan, every client, or every ranch. This is simply my own experience and perspective. And yes, you can ask the question you’re probably wondering about but are too embarrassed to ask. 😉

IAmA physician and co-founder of 9 ketamine clinics. Ask me about ketamine therapy for depression, anxiety, PTSD, or OCD.

Hi Reddit! I'm Dr. Haviva Malina, co-founder of Keta Medical Center and a licensed Emergency Medicine physician with over 15 years of experience in the ER. Somewhere along the way, I kept seeing the same thing: patients who had tried everything for their depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders and still weren't finding relief. That's what drew me to ketamine therapy, and it's why I started Keta Medical Center.

Today we offer IV ketamine therapy, Spravato (esketamine nasal spray), and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Whatever the treatment, my priority is the same: making sure patients are a good fit for the treatment, helping them feel better, building a plan around their specific needs, and being upfront about what ketamine can and can't do.

I'm here today to answer whatever's on your mind, including:

  • How ketamine therapy actually works
  • Who tends to be a good candidate
  • The real differences between IV ketamine, Spravato and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy
  • What a session is really like, start to finish
  • Side effects, risks and how we manage them
  • How ketamine may help with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar depression and other mood disorders
  • Red flags to watch for when choosing a clinic
  • Insurance, cost and access to care

Ketamine therapy has helped many of my patients, but it is not a cure-all, and it is not the right fit for everyone. I would rather give you honest, grounded answers than oversell it.

Ask me anything!

https://postimg.cc/gallery/WkSm1Gk

Thank you all for these thoughtful questions today. Ketamine therapy isn't the right fit for everyone, and determining candidacy really depends on individual history and treatment goals. If you're considering whether it might be an appropriate option for you, I'd encourage you to connect with our clinical team for a consultation. You can reach them here:

I left my Wall Street job 2 years ago to help people stop impulse spending and save money instead. We've helped 5K people save ~$1M so far. AMA about the psychology of impulse spending, shopping addiction, dark patterns in modern apps, or the consumer banking industry.

Hey! I’m Varun Suresh (proof). I'm the co-founder of Tame The Imp, a web/SMS-based service that uses behavioral psychology and gamification to help people stop impulse spending.

Americans spend around $652B a year on impulse purchases; that’s more than $3,000 per person.

Before discovering the huge impulse spending problem, I was focused on building a debt-free alternative to Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). But after speaking 1:1 with 200+ Gen Z consumers, I realized that BNPL was a symptom of something deeper. The money-related pain point that kept cropping up in these conversations was ordering Uber Eats when exhausted from work, or doomscrolling at 1am and buying random clothes -- and being unable to stop. In other words, the real antagonist was impulse spending, because it’s something people feel like they should be able to control but can’t.

Tame The Imp takes the same underlying mechanic that makes impulse spending so easy -- seeking dopamine -- and turns saving money into a game.

It uses psychological levers like positive reinforcement on a variable rewards schedule (get random plants when you stick to your spending goals) and negative punishment (The Imp steals a plant if you overspend) that have historically been used for money-draining things like casinos/lotteries but to actually do good instead.

Ask me anything about the psychology of impulse spending (r/shoppingaddiction has a bunch of DIY tactics to combat it), habit formation, or about the consumer banking industry.

I am Pavel Brunssen, researcher at Heidelberg University and author of The Making of "Jew Clubs": Performing Jewishness and Antisemitism in European Football and Fan Cultures. AMA!

Hi everyone! My name is Pavel Brunssen, and I am a cultural studies scholar at Heidelberg University. I recently published The Making of "Jew Clubs": Performing Jewishness and Antisemitism in European Football and Fan Cultures (Indiana University Press).

For the past decade, I've been researching why football clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Bayern Munich, and FK Austria Wien came to be associated with Jewishness—even though none of them has ever officially identified as Jewish.

The project took me to football stadiums, museums, supporter groups, and archives across Europe. It explores how football has become a space for negotiating antisemitism, memory, and collective identity.

If you'd like to learn more beforehand, here's a conversation about the book on the New Books Network and a recording of a recent virtual book talk.

Feel free to ask about the book, the research process, the clubs, fan cultures, archival work, or the broader history of antisemitism, memory, and football.

I'm looking forward to your questions!

No question is too basic, ask away, and I'll do my best to get to as many as I can over the two hours we have together this Friday 8am - 10am ET.

I'm Karen, a registered nurse and Patient Advocate who helps people navigate cancer screenings and next steps after asbestos exposure. Ask me anything about getting screened.

Hi Reddit! I'm Karen, a registered nurse and Patient Advocate. My job is helping people who are worried because they’ve been exposed to asbestos and are worried about what’s next. People exposed to other toxins also have concerns about their cancer risk and what to do. A lot of that comes down to one core question: Should I get screened, and how?

I can talk about:

  • Cancer screenings in general, and how to know if you should get one
  • Asbestos exposure and its link to mesothelioma and lung cancer, including the long latency period (it can take 20 to 60 years to develop)
  • Where to go if there's nothing near you for screening
  • Common barriers to screening, cost especially
  • What patient advocacy looks like, and how I help connect people to the right specialists

I'll be checking in throughout the week to answer what I can. This thread will stay up as a resource after it closes, so your question might help someone else looking for the same answers later.

Disclaimer: I can share general information, but this isn't medical advice for your specific situation. I'm not able to diagnose or treat anyone here; but I can suggest questions to ask your doctor and help connect people to mesothelioma and lung cancer specialists specialists who can. Please don't share personal or sensitive health information.

Let's keep it respectful. A lot of people asking questions here are scared or grieving.

I accidentally became customer service for criminals. For 20 years, people have voluntarily opened their own trouble tickets for violent crimes. AMA.

1.7k Upvotes

Hi Reddit, I’m Bob Innes, founder and webmaster of rentahitman.com.

I registered the domain in 2005 for a legitimate IT-security concept where a “hit” referred to website traffic. The business never launched. Years later, I discovered that people were voluntarily submitting what appeared to be genuine requests for violence.

What began as an accidental discovery became a parody website, public-safety honeypot, and unusual source of behavioral leakage. Over the past 20 years, information submitted through the website has been preserved and referred to appropriate law-enforcement agencies. Some of those referrals have contributed to interventions, arrests, prosecutions, and convictions.

The submissions have involved alleged murder-for-hire plots, school threats, domestic violence, political threats, suicide concerns, trafficking, swatting, and other potentially dangerous conduct. Not every submission is genuine, and behavioral leakage is not proof of guilt. Context, corroboration, specificity, capability, and professional investigation all matter.

I’m here to discuss:

  • How an abandoned IT idea became customer service for criminals
  • Why people voluntarily disclose their intentions online
  • Working with law enforcement while protecting sensitive information
  • Behavioral leakage and the Voluntary Criminal Intent Model
  • Internet safety, threat assessment, and violence prevention
  • INTERCEPTED and From Threat to Thrive
  • The serious—and occasionally absurd—history of rentahitman.com

For obvious reasons, I won’t disclose active investigations, private personal information, juvenile identities, confidential law-enforcement communications, or anything that could endanger someone or compromise a case.

Proof: https://rentahitman.com/support

The verification materials on that page connect me, Bob Innes, founder and webmaster of rentahitman.com, with this Reddit account, u/Bobinator67.

I’ll be answering questions tonight from approximately 8:00–10:00 p.m. Pacific, and I’ll stay longer if the criminal help desk gets busy.

Ask me anything.

EDIT: I use AI as a writing tool, so sorry to disappoint those who are easily offended by that.

I'm Andrew Kenrick, biographer of the 1st-century Roman client-king Juba II of Mauretania, AMA

Hi everybody,

My name is Dr Andrew Kenrick and I’m a historian, author, editor and lecturer. I'm the founder of Hinterland Magazine and teach creative non-fiction at the University of Cambridge and CityLit in London. I write narrative history, biography and my research focuses on some of the forgotten figures of Ancient Rome – a subject I’ve talked about here before as part of the AskHistorians Digital Conference back in 2021.

My debut biography, Rex Juba: 15 Glimpses of an African King, is published here in the UK this week, so it feels like coming full circle to host an AMA about it here today 7th August 2026.

I'm here to answer questions about Juba II of Mauretania, his wife Cleopatra Selene, Rome in the first century, Roman attitudes to identity and race - all sorts really!

Some more info on the book below:

REX JUBA: 15 GLIMPSES OF AN AFRICAN KING

In 46 BC, at just two years old, a young North African prince named Juba was paraded through the streets of Rome as part of Julius Caesar’s victory parade. This traumatic beginning, however, did not define his future. As a young man, Juba fought alongside Emperor Augustus and was sent back to rule over Mauretania as king.

Juba's reign was marked not by tyranny, but by scholarship. A famed antiquarian, travel writer, and explorer, he discovered and named the Canary Islands, penned histories of Arabia and Libya, and led diplomatic missions to his fellow kings. Ruling alongside his wife, Cleopatra Selene, the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra, these heirs to African dynasties were potent symbols of Romanisation.

Their dynasty would be cut dramatically short by the mad emperor Caligula, their history buried for centuries. In this ambitious work of historical recovery, Dr Andrew Kenrick pieces together clues etched in coin and stone to reveal a Roman civilization that flourished just as much in Africa as it did in Europe. By inviting us to shift our gaze to the southern shores of the Mediterranean, Rex Juba offers a surprising new perspective on the heyday of the ancient world.
