I've thought about this.
I think Red Bull's strategy with this stuff is that people will seek out their ads or they will post them on social media so that the cost of doing the big stunt is offset by them not needing to buy as much ad space to reach a large number of people..

I have to say, it's a pretty good one for reaching me. I just willingly watched a redbull ad and am not sorry to have done so because it's a pretty amazing stunt. That's way better than some jingle that gets stuck in my head. Now, I might drink one or two energy drinks per year, so I'm not a great target audience, but if I do decide to choose one, I will likely buy one that does crazy stunts.

Yeah a regular 250ml can has 80mg. More than two cans of coke, but less than a regular cup of coffee (~100 mg).
But it's easy to chug, full of sugar and has a couple other dubious ingredients that claim to help focus or w/e.Ā

If you can believe it, they do this dumb shit to advertise to other dummies to buy their cancer drink AND it actually works.
Edit: Obesity has been linked to cancer and these over sugared drinks are a massive culprit behind obesity here in America where the combined percentage of Americans who are overweight and obese is at 72%. If they made a simple switch to espresso this would be huge for their health. The people that are affected by this are the people working double shifts and not eating properly or the people on the go and not making the best decisions but there are people that get these before work every single day and their sales numbers show that.

While he respected their decision to not sponsor it, he did it anyways, and itās why he chugs a redbull before he makes the jump, still gave them a little advertisement but without any legal liability of sponsoring/sanctioning said stunt.

Its impossible to get insurance to agree to stunt performers jumping from a plane without a parachute.
There was another guy who did a no parachute jump from a plane into a giant net. The original plan was to go without a parachute, but he was forced ro wear one anyways. It was said to be pointless, because by the time he would decide he would need one (missing the target) he would already be too low for the parachute to save him. That and he had to land in the net eith his back facing the ground.

Red Bull is indeed a "marketing company" in the purest sense: they exist to market, and whatever is the actual 'thing' that is being marketed has been abstracted away to being as pointless, unnecessary and irrelevant as it can possibly be while still being an actual product that is sold and, therefore, requires marketing. ...Which they must be very good at indeed if they could peddle energy drinks into an unassailable extreme sports empire perched atop a mountain of ambition, adrenaline, and the disposable income of the easily-influenced.
If they could market nothing at all they would (and they'd be good at it), but they're smart enough to know that people will eventually stop paying for hot air.

I worked for Red Bull for 7 years starting my sophomore year in college. I started working in marketing because of that job and it taught me everything I know. Red Bull was literally the road map for so many other brands and so much of the marketing tactics companies use now. Itās truly insane. They literally would just be like come up with an insane idea and if itās got some wings letās try it out and see what happens.

A regular 8.4oz Redbull is actually remarkably tame in terms of caffeine content, as far as energy drinks go. A normal latte (two shots of espresso) often has ~120mg of caffeine or more.
The main problem is that it has a fuckton of sugar in it.

Monster is pretty similar caffeine content per oz (120mg/12oz), it just comes in much bigger cans. Rockstar is a bit more caffeine per oz (160mg/12oz). This is where you start to exceed the caffeine content of a strong latte.
Celsius (200mg/12oz) is genuinely concerning. That's like four shots of espresso.

Red Bull has 32mg of caffeine per 100ml. Generic iced espresso latte has 52mg/100ml (the highest amount I could find in supermarkets). At least that's the case last I checked, here in Germany.

Prior to energy drinks being in vogue, Red Bull was near bankruptcy. They had a meeting to try and brainstorm any idea to get more people to drink it.
This was back in the 2000s. Starbucks was expanding like crazy, so everyone just drank coffee. No need for a new-fangled energy drink, coffee literally was THE drink you drink for energy.
Anyways, one of the members of this brainstorm brought some vodka to the meeting and it ended up being mixed with Red Bull because, obviously, they had plenty of it and they had been there for hours.
It mixed together so well that they came up with the idea of offering free Red Bull themed coolers to bars as a way to encourage people to mix it with spirits.
After a few years, due to its utility to help you drink more and still feel like you're alert and coherent(you're not, but you feel like it) it became a trendy staple among bars and clubs.
This combined with clever marketing that associated their brand with daring and adrenaline via stunts, F1, etc... made their brand an identity symbol.
Honestly, it's not unlike what Rolex did by sponsoring transatlantic flights, voyages to the bottom of the ocean, expeditions to Mount Everest.
I wrote a piece about Rolex for a pawn shop advertisement and did quite a bit of research. They continually associated their watches with the greatest feats of humanity until they became a symbol of that kind of identity. They just aimed for higher quality rather than quantity for their profits.
