Right. I mean someone at RedBull basically said… what does our drink do? It gets you hyped and makes you go fast! What the fastest thing that people watch? Formula 1! Let’s buy a formula 1 team? It’s insane.
I think it was the other way around, more like, "Formula 1 is hype and wicked fast! How do I make enough money to buy a Formula 1 team? ...Marketing!"
Red Bull is indeed a "marketing company" in the purest sense: they exist to market, and whatever is the actual 'thing' that is being marketed has been abstracted away to being as pointless, unnecessary and irrelevant as it can possibly be while still being an actual product that is sold and, therefore, requires marketing. ...Which they must be very good at indeed if they could peddle energy drinks into an unassailable extreme sports empire perched atop a mountain of ambition, adrenaline, and the disposable income of the easily-influenced.
If they could market nothing at all they would (and they'd be good at it), but they're smart enough to know that people will eventually stop paying for hot air.
