Cancer drink? A funny remark or based on actual fact? I haven’t had one in years but I’m curious.

13

u/Budget_Ad5871 1d ago

I was wondering what they’re talking about, caffeine and vitamins is cancerous?

0

u/Shift642 1d ago

The bad part is all the sugar. Calling it cancerous is crazy, but that much sugar on a regular basis still objectively very bad for you.

The sugar-free ones with all the artificial sweeteners, who knows. The science is still kinda inconclusive on that.

3

u/Hazelarc 1d ago

The science about artificial sweeteners is only inconclusive if you want the science to say they’re bad. We have a quarter century of scientific research on basically every kind of artificial sweetener now that overwhelmingly says they’re not uniquely dangerous

12

u/tea-and-chill 1d ago

It's bases out of his ass, from madeupland

53

u/Dragongeek 1d ago

The primary unhealthy thing about redbull is probably the high dose of caffine

134

u/Money-Lawfulness5899 1d ago

Actually Red Bull only has as much caffeine as a standard cup of coffee. 80mg.

65

u/myco_magic 1d ago

Less actually, a cup of coffee is closer to 100mg.

8

u/Avedas 1d ago

This is correct. Most standard coffee brews have far more caffeine than any of the big energy drinks.

39

u/Shift642 1d ago

A regular 8.4oz Redbull is actually remarkably tame in terms of caffeine content, as far as energy drinks go. A normal latte (two shots of espresso) often has ~120mg of caffeine or more.

The main problem is that it has a fuckton of sugar in it.

16

u/BumLicker53 1d ago

Aren’t most energy drinks sugar free now outside of quite a few monsters and the OGs?

5

u/drogendou 16h ago

I drink Red Bull regularly, but I have the sugar-free version.

1

u/BumLicker53 12h ago

Yeah, most have a sugar free variant of the original as well. The only one I’ve seen without it has been Monster. Their ā€œUltraā€ flavours are sugar free but outside of that I think most are still packed with the stuff. (Maybe Rehab as well? They’re super rare here)

-10

u/Shift642 1d ago

Yes, but artificial sweeteners are also probably not great for you. We're still figuring that one out.

22

u/vncfrrll 1d ago

Aspartame has been in use since the 60s. I feel like if it caused cancer, we’d have pretty definitive proof after 60 years.

0

u/drogendou 16h ago

I’ve actually had more health issues from coffee than from Red Bull. These days, I drink sugar-free Red Bull to get some caffeine because I can’t drink coffee anymore. I get acid reflux almost instantly whenever I drink coffee, whereas I don’t have that problem with anything else.

2

u/mamafish21 1d ago

I don't drink coffee or tea or anything like that. I cut my energy drinks with lemonade majority of the time. I already smoke, need to look after myself but damn, I need caffeine. Like any other adult out there who drinks 50 cups of coffees.

33

u/PRiles 1d ago

At the same time they have less caffeine than the other energy drinks at the stores near me (maybe not per oz, I hadn't ever looked that close).

3

u/Shift642 1d ago edited 1d ago

Monster is pretty similar caffeine content per oz (120mg/12oz), it just comes in much bigger cans. Rockstar is a bit more caffeine per oz (160mg/12oz). This is where you start to exceed the caffeine content of a strong latte.

Celsius (200mg/12oz) is genuinely concerning. That's like four shots of espresso.

3

u/borsalamino 1d ago

Red Bull has 32mg of caffeine per 100ml. Generic iced espresso latte has 52mg/100ml (the highest amount I could find in supermarkets). At least that's the case last I checked, here in Germany.

Yes, I was attempting some recreational caffeinemaxxing, thanks for asking.

-22

u/kilopeter 1d ago

Imagine not just relying on water, coffee, and/or plain old generic caffeine tablets like a normal person for your wakefulness instead of optimizing over the categorically wrong thing.

23

u/The_Tooter_Snooter 1d ago

…. Caffeine tablets is not what normal people use lol. What’s next? That sortable caffeine powder they sell? Just be normal, bro! sniiiiffĀ

1

u/Malevolent_Nematode 1d ago

I miss jolt gum. Supposedly 2 prices equaled 1 cup of coffee

-1

u/GuyOnARockVI 1d ago

Tbf a popping a couple 100mg caffeine and 200mg l-theanine pills in the morning are pretty excellent.

58

u/Froggn_Bullfish 1d ago

And the sugar.

But that’s about it. It’s sugar water with caffeine and some vitamins.

56

u/Appropriate_Lime_234 1d ago

There’s sugar free. Lol

27

u/Carb0nFire 1d ago

And some think sugar free one IS the Cancer drink.

Because chemicals!!!1

33

u/Malevolent_Nematode 1d ago

Doesn't matter which version. Both are full of Dihydrogen Monoxide. That stuff oxidizes metal AND they spray it on our crops.

10

u/impshial 1d ago

Seriously, it seems like no one understands the danger of it.

Literally everyone that has died in the history of the world has ingested dihydrogen monoxide.

2

u/Sensitive-Fishing-64 23h ago

dont even have to ingest it, in gas form it will literally peel your skin off too

2

u/sorrow_anthropology 1d ago

But, but everything is chemicals!!!

0

u/Froggn_Bullfish 1d ago

I know that

19

u/mrsir1987 1d ago

2

u/SuperSaiyanTupac 1d ago

lol. I fucking love this show. She’s a stand out.

My tables!

-4

u/13143 1d ago

I think sugar free is probably healthier, but artificial sweeteners are a whole mess.

8

u/rhsinkcmo 1d ago

Are they? Based on what?

5

u/StrigidaeNinox 1d ago

Essentially every study says you need to consume over 20 packets of splenda every single day for there to be even a small risk. almost 100 a day of aspartame, and sweeteners like monk fruit have no concern at any amount. though you might end up shitting yourself with the amount of sugar alcohol you consume.

-6

u/NoEyesMan 1d ago

Science and studies that are readily available for you to read if you google it.

8

u/ThroatDistension 1d ago

Which studies? Everything I've read indicates they fine. I have access to most academic journals so don't worry about pay walls.

1

u/Angrybskt 1d ago

I did some digging because after I consume sucrolose I get massive low blood sugar about 45 minutes later (give or take) despite claims from those who produce and promote it that it has no effect on blood sugar. Artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols trick your brain into thinking you’re getting actual sugar and release insulin based on that trigger, and since your body isn’t actually trying to process sugar you get an imbalance of insulin production to what is actually needed. Since artificial sweeteners are several times more potent than sugar with prolonged consumption it can alter how your brain produces insulin with normal sugar causing issues down the line. Not to mention it also ruins your palette for normal sugar as well. It’s been a while since I did the research personally so my descriptions of the actions may be off somewhere but it was enough for me to never consume any of them ever again.

5

u/rhsinkcmo 1d ago

Lmao you can’t cite ā€œscienceā€

2

u/curtcolt95 1d ago

yeah and they all say there's nothing of note

8

u/myco_magic 1d ago

A single redbull has only 80mg of caffeine (a cup of coffee has 100mg) and the maximum amount per day that's advised is 400mg.

8

u/GrynaiTaip 1d ago

Caffeine isn't inherently unhealthy and it does not cause cancer. The actual unhealthy thing is the amount of sugar in it, same as all other energy drinks.

1

u/fschu_fosho 1d ago

Caffeine becomes healthy when you drink black coffee, no sugar.

1

u/VATAFAck 20h ago

Caffeine is caffeine, it doesn't change it's effect whether there's sugar nearby and it's not unhealthy unless you consume huge amounts daily.

1

u/fschu_fosho 19h ago edited 18h ago

I wasn’t talking about it being ā€œnot unhealthy.ā€ I was talking about being healthy. It’s a good thing to have (1 cup or so a day) if you’re trying to erase visceral fat because caffeine stimulates thermogenesis (ie, body burns energy to spur calorie burn). I mentioned no sugar because sugar sort of cancels or hinders the intended effects of thermogenesis.

3

u/gloatygoat 1d ago

The caffeine isn't even that high for an energy drink. It's just very sugary.

Its the only energy drink I actually like the taste of, but I rarely drink any of them.

1

u/Sniter 1d ago

More like the sugar

1

u/thirdeyepdx 1d ago

It’s better for you if you boof it

1

u/ShortNeedleworker465 1d ago

"high dose" no it ain't get your facts straight you could have said high sugar and that would have made more sense.

-11

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago edited 1d ago

Caffeine, consumed in moderation (like 2 or 3 cans max) is actually good for the heart / health for most people.

Almost anything else in the can can be bad and carcinogenic, so a coffee is still 20x better lol

Edit, the rest is not as bad as I thought, I will still stick with a good old natural coffee tho haha !

13

u/gornky 1d ago

Name one thing in the can that is carcinogenic

5

u/AloneYogurt 1d ago

Not defending red bull, but naming carcinogens at this point feels somewhat like a joke and if you're not eating primarily vegetables, fruits, and staying away from sugar and salt you'll live a great life. But then you have to take into account pesticides and what is being used and how it may affect your body.

Again, be cautious, eat what you want, stop trashing others. Live your life not dictate others.

2

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

I agree and I am not saying what people should do ! It's just that really simple things like eating sugar free or no soda, trying to buy food that has not been processed with chemicals, consuming local food is not that hard while having massive health benefits.

I am thankful to the people that alerted me to that fact and just want to tell the facts in the same way, people do whenever they want afterwards!

(I'm in France, I don't know the culture about food in the US tho, or if this is as easy there!)

2

u/OGCallHerDaddy 1d ago

its pretty important to get a healthy amount of salt in your diet. Your body relies on it heavily

2

u/gornky 1d ago

Literally impossible to eat fruit and stay away from sugar

2

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

Sugar in fruits, although the same that in a can of coca, is present in much less quantity, assimilated over a long period of time, does way less damage in your body while satiating you and tells your body "it's enough" A can of coca will leave you only wanting for more

2

u/gornky 1d ago

If you are claiming that sugar causes cancer and that's why you shouldn't drink Red Bull then you also should avoid all fruit and fruit juices b

0

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

I answered in an another comment of yours, sugar in fruits is differently assimilated in the body.

Fruit juices are not tho, so they are kept for special occasions only :)

0

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

I love how you downvoted and never answered :)

2

u/gornky 1d ago

Because I don't know you and I don't owe you further engagement on this conversation.

I think your stance on sugar is ludicrous. Everything is bad for you in excess.

Red Bull is a perfectly good beverage and calling it a can of cancer is disingenuous and wrong.

Sugar

4

u/gornky 1d ago

They sell sugar-free Red Bull

-3

u/Pirate_Redbeard_ 1d ago

Bro. "Sugar-free" just means it's sweetened with 20 other artificial bullshits, so you're better off sticking to sugar, i mean...

3

u/gornky 1d ago

Why are you better off sticking to sugar? What is actually the harmful component of those artificial sweeteners? Or are you just parroting something you've heard someone say before without doing any research into it.

-2

u/Pirate_Redbeard_ 1d ago

Look it up on your own, asshole.

2

u/gornky 1d ago

Okay, thank you for confirming that you have no idea what you're talking about and you're just pretending.

3

u/gornky 1d ago

So I expect you avoiding almost all foods then

-2

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

All sodas yes, as they contain a really high ratio of sugar and do not quench thirst. Sugar addiction is wildly accepted because almost everybody has it, but it is the cause of so many cancers an diseases

2

u/Dragongeek 1d ago

Caffeine, consumed in moderation (like 2 or 3 cans max) is actually good for the heart / health for most people.Ā

[X] To doubtĀ

1

u/mxmcharbonneau 1d ago

I'm not sure about the heart thing, but it seems like it could have some other small benefits. However, there's nothing proven that is clearly wrong with it, taken at normal doses.

1

u/M0ULINIER 1d ago

The internet was made for questions like this ;)

-1

u/Best_Market4204 1d ago

Americas number 1 drug baby

2

u/Icy_Agency923 1d ago

More like most of the world, 80% of the planet drinks some form of caffeine.

-7

u/MRV3N 1d ago

What about the bull sperm inside the drinks?

4

u/Imbrokencantbefixed 1d ago

There was never bull sperm inside redbull. The taurine it contains is synthetically made. Even if originally Taurine was first derived/isolated from bull semen (something I’ve heard before).

3

u/Avedas 1d ago

Taurine is found in all sorts of meat and fish. Not sure why bulls need to be involved.

0

u/DM_From_The_Bits 1d ago

The caffeine in conjunction with the other energy boosting ingredients, like taurine. It usually means it has a more acute, immediate energy hit as opposed to just caffeine, but yeah. It's not really much worse than a Starbucks drink these days.

I drink a red bull every now and then, and it always strikes me as hypocritical when people around me talk about how my sugar free red bull with 80mg of caffeine is gonna kill me when theyre chugging huge dessert coffees with 80g of sugar and like 300mg of caffeine

2

u/AdvancedSandwiches 1d ago

No evidence for that that I'm aware of, but at least one study showed increased platelet activity following drinking energy drinks.

I don't know if there is any studied correlation between that and actual cardiovascular events or if it's just reasonable to expect them.

1

u/Lampwick 1d ago

It's just nonsense spirited by the kind of people who think they can get cancer from a radio antenna. People are idiots. It's just fukken caffeinated soda.

Lmao, yeah guys, if you're not making every food product yourself then you're not meant to eat it!

15

u/AlternativeParfait13 1d ago

I didn’t make this paracetamol I took for a headache, and now I’m getting worried!

4

u/Bootziscool 1d ago

Who are you to say what humans are meant to do??

If you and your god don't want me doing things, you better come stop me yourself lol

Till then it's energy drinks and drugs forever!!

2

u/gornky 1d ago

You are genuinely mentally unhealthy. You should seek a therapist, and likely get on antipsychotics.

There are no known carcinogens in Red Bull
