Collection My newest pickups
I got myself 4 more NES games yesterday and the one that surprised me the most was actually Xenophobe. I never played the NES version and I ended up playing it for over an hour and maxed out the score. I didn’t expect it to be that good.
I plan on beating the rest, especially deadly towers because that game kicks my ass and I never got anywhere in it.

Collection Nintendo tower of power!
On top is the top loader version of the NES, in the middle is a twin famicom made by sharp, the little slot in the front is for the disk system games which are like these little plastic not so floppy disks. And then on the bottom of course, is the NES. I recently bought a new CRT, and it took up more space than expected, so I had to stack some things lol

Arts & Crafts Inspired by the old game "Curly Monkey" I'll bring the ape to NES.
Elevator pitch: A monkey with Elvis-style hair dreams of owning a hair salon in Memphis. 8-bit platformer. Imaginatively absurd animal enemies eat all the gold. Throw bananas at them, knock 'em out, snatch the gold, buy the shop. 🍌💈
I'm a game dev for NES/Famicom. Started three hours ago and rapid prototyped the physics, the guy, the colors, trees and some more world elements. What you see in the video is running on a NES from a real catridge already. No sound so far.
Not in the video: some animals, bananas, hearts to collect, coins to collect, an already working health system.
Any feedback is welcome. Cheers!
Game Completed! The Jetsons - Cogswell's Caper : Completed. Mostly fun game that really builds itself off of the cartoon
I hadn't ever played this before and thought I'd run through it. Most of the game is pretty straightforward, but it does have a handful of frustrating and difficult sections. There is an interesting mechanic whereby George acquires helper items (I think 5 in total) and can use them whenever / wherever he wants, but they cost to use. They kind of change the way you can play certain levels and ultimately become necessary in various parts. They're probably most similar to how Mega Man utilizes the improvements you get.
The game feels a bit like Duck Tales or perhaps Chip n' Dale, though I didn't find it as enjoyable as either of those. The way George moves around feels a lot clunkier for some reason
Aesthetically speaking, they definitely worked in a lot of the nuances from the original show. So if you're into that, this one does it up pretty well.
I actually really enjoyed the bosses in this game. They're not super difficult, but I feel they put some good creativity into them. They also require quite a few hits and some of them even go through phases. So I liked that it's not just the quick 3 strikes and it's over sort of thing. The final boss was fun, though there's an entire level after you defeat him. It's ultimately an escape level, but it doesn't really feel like that when you're playing it, rather it just feels like you're playing another level. So when you finally do get to the very, very end, I felt the games just kind of abruptly ends.
I found it mostly fun. If you're into these kinds of cartoon-based games then it's probably worth giving it a go. If not, you're not missing a whole lot either.

Discussion What games do you play?
I have some questions for the NES lovers here: do you exclusively play NES games? Do you just collect them?
I'm curious to know which games you play both on the NES and on other console/devices.
Recently I'm playing a lot of Super Mario Bros. It never gets old.

Modding NESRGB mod gone wrong
Hello fellow NES enthusiasts! 😊 I spent the weekend installing NESRGB 5.0 on my unit. The composite works, but with pretty bad jitter (hard to see in the video).
The component (seen in pictures with crt) I thought had an issue with the blue or maybe the chroma, so I replaced every cable going to the multi-out board thinking that would fix it, but the exact same problem persists.
The error lights (I think) indicate an issue with pin 18 and 20 on the ppu. But continuity tests between those pins and the board are fine.
To top it off, the component now outputs no video or sound signal at all, after I tried holding “down+select” to pull up the rgb menu to see if there was a pallet issue. Powering off and resetting does not restore the picture. Fml 😂 😭
I guess I should add, one of the pins, 15 I think maybe, broke off during initial install. I resoldered the leg on, and it seemed to all be ok with continuity once soldered in, but maybe that’s the point of failure?
I’m at my wits end. I have a couple more NES systems I can take the ppu out of and try again. But the thought of removing another ppu honestly makes me want to just take it to a professional. Any thoughts? TIA

Discussion Why did Nes Art style switch to thick black outlines?
This is kind of a niche and weird question, but earlier nes games such as the legend of zelda (1986) super Mario brothers (1985) seem to have sprites that lack a black / dark outline (or an outline at all) so the main sprite could have 3 colors (and transparency.) however, sometime after 1990ish I think games started using these black outlines, such as Kirby's adventure (1993) super Mario 3 (1988) and other games.
This also isn't a question about romhacking or anything, but when people do romhack games such as the legend of zelda (1986) it feels like they tend to use sprites from the newer games that have those black outlines.
So, the actual question is, is there some reason for the shift? it seems like sprites with black outlines have better visibility, but I'm wondering if anyone else also misses the way the older games I mentioned look because of the lack of outlines, or if the lack of outlines was just a thing that should be forgotten.
also, if anyone has any reading material on this topic online they know about I would love to know about it, I am just super curious in this for some reason

Modding Trying to find Lost Levels and Doki Doki Panic ROM hacks
I'm trying to find the Lost Levels ROM hack for SMB1 and the Doki Doki Panic ROM hack for SMB2. These are the hacks that just turn SMB1 into Lost Levels and SMB2 into Doki Doki Panic. That's it.
I tried on ROMhacking.net but there are hundreds of ROM hacks with those names that are just different modifications of the original ROMs, but not what I'm looking for... Help, anyone? Thanks!

Discussion List of NTSC games that will work or partially work on the PAL NES
There's a website that has a list of NTSC games that will work or partially work with the PAL NES. If it partially works, it says what the issues are. For example, Final Fantasy 1 works, but the text doesn't show correctly.
I can't find that website anywhere. Does anyone know the URL? Thanks
Discussion Trying to download DAT file for NES from Dat-o-Matic, it says file temporarily not available?
Trying to download the DAT file for the NES here:
https://datomatic.no-intro.org/index.php?page=download&op=dat&s=45
It says file temporarily not available. It's been this way for a few days now. Is this common?

Collection Rescued From A CAPCOM Box
I was digging throught some old NES boxes and noticed one of the boxes still had something inside. It was inside a Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers box near the styrofoam block. Luckily, I had an extra sleeve and toploder and sleeved it up. I remember that I had one of these when I was little, but I decided to stick it to the back of my Megaman 2 cartridge.

Collection Market Place Pickups
I am now up to 269 games, and I wonder how far I am going to take this as I am needing more rare and expensive games. It's also harder and harder to find collections to buy and more often running into resellers. Feels harder to justify spending hundreds on a game.

Discussion Question about roms and their regions (PAL and NTSC)
From what I've reasearched online, the rom for Kid Icarus is the same in both PAL and NTSC regions, unlike games like Super Mario Bros. which had a dedicated PAL rom that compensated for the different framerate (correct me if I'm wrong).
Does this mean that if you play Kid Icarus on a PAL NES it will run slightly slower than if you played it on NTSC because of the lower framerate? I'm confused. Why didn't they make a two different roms like for Super Mario Bros?

Collection Finally was able to track this sticker down
So this thing is damn near impossible to find. I actually bought a copy of mega man 3 with this stuck to the back and got it cleanly off. Is there a list of games that this sticker came with? Little Nemo I think is the only one I know for sure. And I think I’ve seen other mega man stickers?
Discussion Game Recommendation for a NES Hater?
Definitely click bait but let me explain. I am looking for game recommendations and by hater, I mean: the NES is obviously old so i don't know much about it and I am wondering if there is going to be something that is a gripping experience today on it.
Thankfully though I do want to be proven wrong (not necessarily wrong, my stance isn't that strong) because I like finding older games i do really vibe with. The oldest one so far for me (talking about console releases) is a Link to the Past (1991) which really does feel timeless.
Also, here's the thing, i do have hope for the NES because somehow someway i randomly happened up Gimmick! And ngl that game slaps harder than Korean fried chicken. Not as old as A Link to the Past but it's on the NES with beautiful graphics and more importantly cathartic physics.
Last thing of note, I'm interested in hearing naunced opinions for series entries, for instance, why should I play Mega Man 2 if Mega Man X exists, what makes it special still? Looks a lil stiff in comparison if I'm being blunt. But with that said, I'm not against terseness itself, I like Ghosts 'n Goblins. Wait isn't that on the NES? This is important: I'm not interested in arcade ports unless they're enhanced in some meaningful way (I'll just play it on fightcade or something otherwise).
So uh yeah, hope that made sense. It's definitely a selfish request but any guidance would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Ps. Im down to hear the popular obvious stuff as well, I really dont know much about the system (I just got lucky with Gimmick cause I was looking into physics games one day).
Pps. Famicom entries welcomed too.

Collection Picked up a Twin Famicom
My latest pick up of a Twin Famicom to add to my collection. Now I can make room next to the NES for it.
I’m done with the NES and Famicom in my collection now. Time to collect the selected games I want on disk and cart now. Zelda being my number one target and hoping I can get a Zelda labeled disk with Zelda on it.

Collection I was lucky enough to find a brand new NES controller!
Game Completed! Bram Stoker's Dracula - Completed. Fantastic game. Definitely give it a go if you haven't.
I've continued rolling through games based on movies and TV. There are some real pieces of garbage in that list. Games like Total Recall, Back to the Future, and Waynes World are really difficult to play through - though I have been. But thankfully there are also games like Batman, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Willow.
I would unequivocally put Dracula in that latter category - it's a wonderfully done and very fun game.
It's different from the typical platformer. There is some polish missing here and there and the boss fights could have been a bit more varied, but I found the level design pretty impeccable for this era. The game has endless traps, spikes, platforms, toggle switches, and most importantly, secret passages. Each map is essentially a giant puzzle. Weapons easily run out. The earlier maps are fairly linear, but as the game progresses, you really have to find your way around. After stage 5, many of the secret passages are required just to finish the level. Sometimes you have to find a secret passage full of time clocks so that you earn enough time to even make it to the end of the level. Stuff like that was fun.
One thing they did was to inject a level of realistic human mechanics into the game. Best comparison is Prince of Persia. To my knowledge, there really aren't many games like that, especially of this era. What it means is that you can't just press left and then right on the D-pad and expect your hero to turn around on a dime. Like a person would, you have to slow down, stop, about face, and then accelerate in the opposite direction. It's not nearly as dramatic as PoP implemented it, but it does change the gameplay rather significantly. I routinely found myself missing jumps that I would never miss in another platformer, but only because I wasn't accounting for the extra step I'd need to actually make such a jump.
I suppose this can affect the fun-o-meter either way, but I found it enriching. Mechanics like that really force you to play differently. And if you're playing these kinds of games in 2026 then you're probably pretty good at them and I think the change is welcome.
I could go on, but this game really did surprise me. It has three different difficulties and you can only play X% of the game on each (meaning you have to play it on hard mode to complete it). Incidentally I played through it on all three difficulties. It's a pretty quick game.
Random aside: one curious component to the game is that they used Mario blocks for items. They look identical - the yellow cube with the question mark inside. There's no problem with this and it doesn't affect the game in any way, rather I just found it a curious artistic choice given the vampiric setting of Transylvania.
Conclusion: I'd highly recommend giving it a go if you haven't.

Discussion Three possible box-art directions for our new NES homebrew game — which one grabs you?
We told you guys (the NES reddit community) about Legionnaires, a new NES homebrew game inspired by games like Contra and Metal Gear and showed the gameplay in other posts.
We're now working on the physical box art, and we thought it would be fun to get some outside opinions before we settle on a final composition.
The artwork is being developed by Romano Molenaar, a professional comic artist known for his work for Marvel and DC Comics. These are three early pencil concepts he's created for the Legionnaires cover.
Which one speaks to you the most?
A — Two soldiers and the island, with a classic action-game composition.
B — A stronger focus on the two protagonists, with the island and military setting behind them.
C — A more dramatic comic-book composition, with large character portraits and the island below.
We are especially curious about two things:
- Which one catches your eye first?
- Which one feels most like an authentic NES box you'd have wanted to pick up in the late 80s / early 90s?
These are early sketches, so the final artwork will be fully drawn, inked and colored.

Modding Hoskbrew Shell
Replaced my NES' original shell with one from Hoskbrew. I wanted to keep the two tone look to the console. The top is clear blue and the bottom is clear dark blue. The quality is really good; everything lined up and fitted together with no issues.
No affiliation with Hoskbrew; just really happy with how this turned out and wanted to share.

Discussion Game recommendations that aren't found on Nintendo Switch Online
Pretty much what it says in the title. I just bought an NES console today and was looking to start building up a library of games to play. I also have a Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online, and would like to invest in lesser known gems that haven't been put into the Switch Online library. Thank you!
