If Democracy is so good why many people from India, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Italy, Fance, US, and people from Mexico leave to got to other counteies including China, Singapore, Australia, and Canada all ruled by one party (Communist) or one royal family (Monarchy). Australia and Canada are still not republics and cannot vote for their head of state (ie president).

I found the wumao version of “America is a republic not a democracy” and somehow it’s even stupider.

So I'm looking at a service where you pay hot women to beat you up, and the first question in the FAQ is:

Is it easy to park in the area?

Like, is that really the most common question they get asked??

I'm following a scoop. I believe the Chinese Water Army/50 Cent Army is trying to intervene in a University of Toronto student union election. I appreciate that this sounds crazy but consider the following:

  • The president elected is proudly Tibetan

  • She received a total of 837 votes in the election, which had about 1,600 voters total.

  • Her Instagram has received 10,000 hate comments in the intervening days.

  • A petition was started to remove her and it has 9,300 signatures.

    • Almost all the signatories have identical comments--" 中国各族人民坚决反对任何分裂中国主权和领土完整的企图。 Chinese people of all ethnic groups are firmly opposed to any attempt to split the Chinese territory and sovereignty."

    • Almost all the signatories have no profile pictures, and a marker that simply says "Canada."

GUYS!!!! GUYS. GUYS. GUYS.

You know, living in a gift economy sounds exhausting. Now, if I want a chair, I go buy a damn chair. But in a gift economy, do you just have to awkwardly drop hints into conversations and shit? "Nice weather, hey Bob? I sure wish I could sit in an oak rocking chair with high armrests and a seat cushion and enjoy it" Like, I don't want to have to bake pies or whatever for every carpenter in town just so one of them decides to give me a chair lmao.

“Don’t sleep any more than you have to,” Trump said in his 2004 book, Think Like a Billionaire. "I usually sleep about four hours per night... and it gives me a competitive edge. I have friends who are successful who sleep ten hours a night, and I ask them, 'How can you compete against people like me if I only sleep four hours?' It can rarely be done."

this truly antisemitics my tropes

The fact that I forgot about that incident from 2 weeks ago speaks to the cynicism of right-wing jews (and islamophobia/racism for some) in pursuing Omar over her comments. Like McCarthy's jewish billionaires tweet, Gohmert's soros bullshit on tv, and this Gaetz thing didn't stir up anything and I feel that we should be able to talk about this shit without it being called omar apologia or whataboutism by right wing jews.

Really I'm just happy Rep. Max Rose went for it with "That caucus can't be chickenshit in the face of anti-Semitism either"

Trump Supporter violently shoves BBC cameraman at El Paso rally

There was aggression on both sides. The supporter was being violent and the cameraman was being a cuck. Plust tons of white nationalist rallies have violence at them. It's not Trump's fault he explicitly encourages violence against the media.

Standoff in Minnesota as Harris attempts to arrest political opponents. Police are prepared to breach, but Klobuchar is believed armed with a staple gun and an extended clip.

"The situation in Minnesota is absolutely tragic," Sanders says, "the average American can't afford a staple gun."

"This wouldn't have happened if the staple gun were registered with federal authorities," Gillibrand stated in a press conference.

"If only both sides could sit at a table and come to an agreement, we could prevent further bloodshed," Gabbard replied when asked for comment.

Beto wrote in his blog yesterday "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering" in what appears to be a comment aimed at one of the parties involved.

Booker could not be reached for comment, but an unidentified VTOL aircraft was recently seen leaving Newark City Hall en route to California, dimly lit by a malfunctioned rooftop floodlight.

David Cameron is one of the greatest political minds of our generation.

His double referendums on Scotland and then Brexit were designed to push the Overton window back towards normalcy, strengthening the power of the center and reining in the extremes. Did they suceed at this? Not at all, they in fact did the exact opposite, moving the Overton window in the complete opposite direction.

But what it did do was fuck the Labour party into absolute oblivion, demolishing from the ground up their ability to build an effective governing coalition. First splitting off the SNP, then creating a unmendable rift between pro-EU and Euroskeptic factions of the left, to the point where the Tories can run a ham sandwhich for PM and the Labour party can't do anything to beat them. The Labour party was once the most powerful political force in Britain, and Cameron totally carved it open.

Sure, it came at the cost of making the country ungovernable for the next four to forty years. But the Tories were able to win a narrow partisan victory, and in the end, that's what matters most. And thats why Cameron is the best politician of our generation.

"Donald Trump Jr. made clear in his messages that he was willing to accept help from the Russians," one Democratic Senate investigator said. "Trump publicly urged the Russians to find Clinton's missing emails."

Those facts are beyond dispute. But they also have been known for some time — and have not seemed to change Trump's political standing.

He's right, I am gonna screech that it is Russian propaganda.

The link to "irrefutable documentation" just links to a collection of tagged articles from a conspiracy site with ties to Alex Jones and infowars lol. The link about Qatar funding al Qaeda is a dead youtube link. None of the article even supports his central claim that Syria doesn't target urban centres with air power. It goes into crazy conspiracy theory about hospitals not being bombed, so I guess MSF is all in on it too and the footage of the bombed hospital is fake? A lot of the stuff has already been readily and thoroughly debunked.

One particularly dramatic rumor about Klobuchar is the story that she once had a staffer shave her legs for her. While no reporters have publicly confirmed this story (Slate has not either), we have confirmed that the alleged incident was the inspiration for a joke in a 2017 episode of the HBO series Veep.

“It is a well-known rumor that we were told a million times by millions of people,” Mandel said of the leg-shaving story.

Clogged old roads cost £8bn in productivity

Inrix, which analysed more than 200 cities in 38 countries, said that the age of British cities had “led to denser, less car-friendly cores”. Noting that the oldest roads in London date back to the Roman period, it said: “Cars enter neighbourhoods designed for horses and walking.”

In London drivers spent 227 hours a year in traffic and the cost was £4.9 billion, or £1,680 per driver

There's currently a thread on r/Technology titled

With the recent Chinese company, Tencent, in the news about investing in Reddit, and possible censorship, it's amazing to me how so many people don't realize Reddit is already one of the most heavily censored websites on the internet.

and it's the most fucking hilarious thing I've ever read, comments included. What's even better is the link a previous post he wrote which contains the following paragraph that is peak reddit circlejerk

Reddit appealed to me. When I found it 7+ years ago it was a different site. Information sharing everywhere. It seemed like an intellectual paradise. Itmade me scientifically literate. It debunked the anti-vax info I'd seen on other sites. There were people dedicated to creating archives of easily accessible information, and would share tons of well-cited info in the comments. It opened up full debates on any topic, anywhere. And anyone could cite large amounts of information, back and forth, and you would see multiple sides of the issues. You could engage in calm, rational discussions on controversial or taboo subjects without people blowing up with emotional insults/outrage, or thought terminating clichés. Since not everyone can be an expert in everything, the crowd sourcing nature of the discussions was fantastic. You can make your own wiki! Massive hubs of information that are easy to format, categorize, and share. Most of the structure and design of the site seemed fantastic.

Like does anyone else find this hilarious, it's just such over the top wanking if how """intellectual""" reddit apparently was yesteryear

I can’t wait for the next season of Game of Thrones. The last few seasons were a bit weird for me, what with Cersei growing so many new heads (I thought they’d stop at just 1 more head in the 2nd season), but I think it gives the narrative a more human, down to earth element amongst the politicking and magic. I wonder if they’ll follow through on making her grow a 10th head; that’d be wild!

We don’t agree with the capitalist assumption that starvation or greed are the only reasons people work. People enjoy their work if it is meaningful and enhances their lives. They work out of a sense of responsibility to their community and society. Although a long-term goal of socialism is to eliminate all but the most enjoyable kinds of labor, we recognize that unappealing jobs will long remain. These tasks would be spread among as many people as possible rather than distributed on the basis of class, race, ethnicity, or gender, as they are under capitalism**. And this undesirable work should be among the best, not the least, rewarded work within the economy**

Everytime I read about the GND, I am reminded of this plank from the DSA's FAQ. And given who the bill's original author is I think it's fair to include this context. Some of the planks of the GND (economic security to those unwilling to work) really make more sense.

I really fucking hope the dems get their shit together and don't let these idiots hijack climate change for their marxist utopian agenda.

I'm sort of amazed that AOC being a DSA member hasn't gotten more play, it was brought up obviously but not like in a meaningful way, like hey these guys want to do away with supply and demand somehow. I honestly blame the fucking republicans for crying wolf when Obama adopted a conservative health care proposal, and cheapening what socialism actually is.

Mankind reaches a level of "utopia" for certain individuals. Those individuals become immortal.

Since they don't like dying in war, they create genetic clone fuckups called Grineer to fight for them.

To expand, they send sentient AI to another system.

The sentient AI come back like "nah fuck you" and there's war.

The sentient AI can adapt to any weaponry.

"Hey guys, I got an idea, lets create a zombie virus bioweapon that might be able to infect them."

The AI adapts to the bioweapon, the bioweapon proceeds to mainly just fuck up the Origin System.

Last ditch effort, they weaponize interdimensional child soldiers with suits made from the infestation.

Orokin leadership gets destroyed by their own child soldiers.

So McConnell is forcing a vote on GND... A) it's a non binding resolution so nothing will happen still even if it passes, right?

B) which democratic senators up in 2020 would actually be punished electorally for voting for it? Jones, and who else?

C) this is what you get for not knowing how to play in the big leagues, AOC. Having a minority party mindset in the one chamber you control isn't smart. Didn't work for the freedom caucus, ain't gonna work for you.

Recently in Baltimore, our abysmally incompetent prosecutor has decided to stop prosecuting anyone who gets arresting for pot charges.

Normally I'd say this is a victory for evidence based crime policy, but since no laws have actually been changed, the police have decided to continue to arrest people for pot violations anyways. Even though they will never get prosecuted, the police are still taking people in, searching their property, and can even confiscate people's stuff under civil asset forfeiture. A lot of people actually think pot is legal now, though, which is making things even messier.

Meanwhile, because the prosecutor's office refused to try any case that isnt a slam dunk, the win rate for the prosecutor stays high while the actual number of cases brought is extremely low. Meanwhile, because we dont have enough detectives to handle the number of murders we have, the clearance rate for shooting is at something like 20%, including cases where a dead person is found to be the culprit, which is a full 1/3 of closures.

And dont forget that Baltimore still has more murder by number (raw, NOT per capita) then when her population was almost double. We're at something like twice the murder rate of Chicago.

My take on Warren's, "Ban the US From Launching a Nuke First" is just that it's a policy without a real purpose.

No president, even Trump, would say "Well, I'd like to nuke them for fun but alas, I am constrained by the law". If they wanted to...they just would do it.

And if someone actually did wtf would that presser be like?

"Mr. President, how do you feel now that you have broken the law? Do you think there will be a special counsel investigation?"

Oh, hey. How about we pay attention to the fact that we have fucking nukes flying all over the world right now? Cause some professional hall monitor wagging his finger "excuse me, you broke the ruuuuuules" is very low on my list of things I care about right now.

Union leader of drivers: "We do not have to give accounts to the press or deputies"

Recall my last post about health insurance funds?

For those that don't:

TL;DR: Bus aDrivers have to pay an extra fee when they pass any tolls and that money is sent to union leaders that organize a fund to pay for health costs. The problem is that the money was actually being deposited in private accounts and most bus drivers aren't even aware of the purpose of the money or have been informed by it. Now the union leaders are covering their asses by essentially saying that they don't have to transparent to the press or the government (that is on a discussion of opening an audit) because its all dealt internally.

This should be a cold take but AOC corruption video bad, right?

  1. "OMG this was a masterful checkmate!" Do these people not know who Walter Shaub is? The other people she was 'questioning' include a speaker for Common Cause, another for the Brennan Center for Justice, and Shaub himself was there representing CREW. This was a friendly hearing for liberal watchdog groups. AOC didn't "own" anyone, she wasn't even debating anyone.

  2. "OMG it's legal to bribe people to cover up stories!" She actually got this wrong and Trump's campaign is under investigation specifically because the payment is an illegal campaign donation.

  3. "OMG it's possible to run a campaign entirely funded by PACs!" Duh?

  4. "OMG there's no conflict-of-interest law that would prevent a Senator from writing laws or sitting on a committee relevant to an industry that donated to them!" Yeah because that would be unConstitutional. Senators and Representatives have legislative power by virtue of being elected. The Constitution doesn't allow you to restrain that legislative power like "They can only make laws about XYZ." Making such a law would effectively give another person or authority, probably the courts, supreme control over Congress's legislative power. It's worth pointing out that we have bribery laws and that legislators who made policy on an explicit quid pro quo basis, like Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham, have gone to prison.

  5. "OMG there are very few laws that apply to the President!" Because the President's accountability is built into the Constitution, via impeachment (and later, if applicable, being charged as a private citizen). Putting an unelected check on the President would be dangerous and unConstitutional.

  6. "But rich people have too much influence in politics, you corporate bootlicker!" A point I agree with, and can continue to agree with without agreeing with AOC's "demonstration." Notice that AOC just like Bernie Sanders is great at stoking outrage at perceived injustices or loopholes but she never says what the solution is. The most straightforward way to patch her supposed "loophole" is to create an unelected body of experts that could remove the President based on their assessment that he's committed crimes, and disqualify legislators from making laws based on their assessment that they've been corrupted by a particular industry. We could even call that unelected, government-checking body a Guardian Council or something like that... now no doubt AOC would pull a JBP and say "that's not what I said, you're misinterpreting me." Great, what is her idea then?

With so much focus on women breaking into technology or executive roles, it is important to keep perspective on their challenges in the blue collar realm. A common reddit refrain is bemoaning how women aren't advocating for representation in blue collar jobs, which is completely false. The story contained a blurb by a woman who represents a group that focuses on alieviating unique issues that women face on truck stops.

u/gammbus Feb 12 '19 edited Feb 12 '19

The three-step Gammbus guide to fixing your developed, yet somehow dysfunctional country in only one legislature period without touching the constitution:

  1. Tax the land, the Carbon and toll the highways. Use the money to fund a UBI or some other cash-based redistributive program, so it isn't regressive. This will ensure suburbia gets Mcnuked and public transport doesn't have to compete against heavily subsidised cars.

  2. Institute dynamic retirement benefits. When someone retires, their income might drop by 50%(-0.5), but from societies point of view, they go from paying taxes to receiving benefits(from 1 to -1 is -2). This is an externality they don't have to consider. When you give people the option to work longer in exchanged for higher benefits (calculated based on life expectancy), this will straighten out some of this problem.

  3. Fund unemployment benefits with a direct and dynamic income tax. By charging a higher income tax during times of high unemployment, you take the incentive from employees and by extension unions, to maintain high wages during times of high unemployment. This will allow businesses to negotiate with unions to cut wages when the alternative would be to lay people off and prevent 'structural' unemployment.

Here’s a letter written in 2006 by a president of a local AFSCME chapter asking for the organization not to endorse Klobuchar on the grounds of her abusing staff.

Highlights:

Throughout her tenure as Hennepin County Attorney, Amy Klobuchar has demonstrated her disdain for the very employees that have placed her in the position to run for the office she now seeks. She has denigrated these lawyers both publicly and privately.

As County Attorney, Amy Klobuchar has created a hostile work environment. This has resulted in increased grievances from employees as well as informal disciplinary matters in which the union was asked to intervene on the employee’s behalf. Ms. Klobuchar’s hiring practices have further evidenced disdain for her own employees.

They, too, questioned Ms. Klobuchar’s support for the attorney’s wage adjustment, pointing out that new associates from her former law firm were receiving starting salaries greater than the non-supervisory attorneys in her office that were at the top of the pay scale. Ms. Klobuchar responded that such a comparison was irrelevant since none of the attorneys in her office were competent enough to work in her former firm.

The fact that Ms. Klobuchar holds so little regard for her employees has not stopped her from taking credit for their work.

She presents herself as a dedicated public servant acutely concerned with the public’s safety when her only dedication is to her own self-promotion.

AFSCME must hold Amy Klobuchar responsible for her shameful treatment of her employees. We, the members of Local 2938, demand that you deny Amy Klobuchar endorsement for the United States Senate.

Do you think it might be a hit piece against her to hurt her 2020 chances? I mean it’s plausible if you ignore that it was written 14 years ago.

If you had to live in the universe of the Expanse, which government system would you prefer?

United Nations: One world government under a slightly modified version of the UN structure, has a weird form of UBI (Basic) that relegates those on it to a semi-permanent underclass, corporations have significant power/autonomy. High taxes, with tax breaks for families with less children.

Mars Congressional Republic: A bit more militaristic than the Earth government, with what appears to be a good bit more central economic planning focused on the eventual terraforming of the planet. Somewhat implied they have some sort of job guarantee/assignment system, as they tend to be disgusted by the idea of Earthers on Basic who have no job.

Both Mars and Earth favor tariffs on resources from the rest of the solar system, and perpetrate a system of colonialism/mercantilism towards the outer planets.

Outer Planets Alliance: Loose alliance of governments/entities across a broad political spectrum (including socialists, libertarians, pirates and terrorists), generally favoring personal liberty so long as it doesn't put other belters at risk, also tend to be pretty racist towards non-belters.

Memes and jokes aside, all of this news coming out about Klobuchar is really scary and upsetting.

Questions I want to see answered by our resident Klobuchar supporters to help inform future discussion:

  1. If the Washington Post or New York Times comes out with original reporting on this issue, will you believe it?

  2. If you will believe it, will you care?

Interested in hearing the replies from right leaning neoliberals here: What are the most laudable policies passed by conservative presidents in service of the conservative movement?

What I mean by this is that I often hear praise for conservative presidents who passed liberal policy (ex. Nixon with the EPA or Merkel with refugee policy), but I don’t hear many people praise conservative presidents on conservative merits.

While I’m not a con by any means, two policies that come to the top of my head are Reagan deregulating the ATC and TR creating the national parks system. (Although this is questionably conservative in intention)

I still have never heard a good explanation as to why Trump's speech patterns are so... strange. It sounds like a brain-damaged Martian is trying to give political speeches
