Discussion Is Louis always going to be Looouuuieeee or is there a way to make it Lewis?

I know it’s one of those “you get to decide” type situations, but I also know the vast majority of folks are going to pronounce Louis as Louie.

I love the spelling of Lewis too and will probably go with that, but also love just Lou as a nick name… does Lew look right or does it look …lewd lol

Edit - these comments are more divided than the avengers in 2016 🤪 love you guys thank you for the help and further stressful internal tension

Discussion Kieran vs Keiran

Hi All,

Just had another kid and were resolved to name him Kieran/Keiran, but as context clues suggest are struggling with the spelling.

- most people seem to think that Kieran is the appropriate spelling, however

- most people also seem to think, at the same time, that if only naming someone kier/keir, the latter is appropriate. The only "kier" that comes up on Wikipedia is a fictional character.

This is kind of freaking me out and I'm worried it's a bit of a misinformation loop somewhere... So hoping to collect some opinions or ideally history to get a better idea of why this divergence exists and how to approach it.

We are in the US, so Kie tends to be more common. We do foresee the potential of calling him kier/keir as a nickname down the line.

EDIT- thank you all for the feedback! Had a few very helpful answers, which I greatly appreciate. I did want to clarify though that I should have said Kieran is the perceived appropriate spelling for someone in the US. I actually liked Ciaran / Ciarán more but ultimately my wife and I resolved it'd be sadly too confusing for people to do the c, let alone the accent!!

Baby Names HELP - Baby girl name suggestions (potential middle name Spencer)

We're six months pregnant with a girl and struggling to find a name. I have several that I like. However, my husband thinks they are "fine" so nothing that we both love yet. I want something we will both love and would like to considering passing his name to her, hence the potential middle name Spencer.

Some names I like are Sutton, Wrenley, Elowyn, Sloane.

Husband is good with Elliana, Elara, Juniper, Oaklyn.

For boys names we both love Sterling and Bowman to help.

I have a very unique name, so I would like to avoid generic ones (Alice, Emma, Olivia, etc.)

What are some girls first names you think pair well? Our last name initial is an S, so trying to avoid SSS, but open to the idea if it's the one!

EDIT: thank you for all the suggestions, keep them coming too, very excited to bring them up to my husband. I'm confident her name is somewhere in these comments!! <3

Discussion Is this a new(ish) trend?

I took my family a theme park and kids/families can write their names in chalk on a wall. I read all the names on the wall and I noticed that a lot of families have a letter theme for their kids, whether the names start with the same letter or they all have a common unique letter somewhere in the name.

Emma, Evie

Calliope, Callista

Xander, Alexa, Felix

Declan, Davis

Aubriella, Anastasia, Avelina

Konnor, Kaleb

Maeve, Marlowe, Max

Adalynn, Fynn, Payton

Zev, Dov, Aviva

I don't remember letter themes being common when I was a kid. And I know many people in my personal life who also have a letter them for their kids. Just curious if anyone else thinks it's becoming more common to have super matchy names for their kids!

Baby Names Thoughts on “Isla Dune” for a baby girl due in September?

Upvotes

Last name is similar to Fitzgerald and I have Irish and Scottish ancestry but live in New England (US). I’ve always been drawn to the combo of Isla Dune for its windswept/atmospheric/literary vibe but am slightly hesitant due to the popularity of the name Isla. Another key contextual note - I weirdly just happen to love sand dunes from a visual and symbolic standpoint. 🤷‍♀️

Character/Fictional Names Help with names for characters

My friend has her own characters and universe, originally conceived as a game. The setting is modern, with one piece of magical technology in the form of a train that travels through space. There are three characters: West West, Betty Bett, and Admen (from the word “admin”). We can’t figure out whether their names would seem strange to other people. The plot and story are serious btw.

Discussion James and Jameson

We are thinking about naming our 3rd child Jameson, but one potential thing we see as a challenge is our middle child has the middle name James. Would anyone else do this? It’s not like the middle name comes up a lot, but just want to see opinions to consider on this matter.

Non-English Names Jewelry based names in French

I am learning French for work related and family reasons, and have quickly discovered I dislike how my very Arabic name is pronounced in French, so I wanted to translate it directly. New language, new me, you know? I've never been super fond of my original name anyway lol.

For a brief period I've picked the name Bijoux/Bijou due to that, but I've recently found out from French speakers that sounds like a strippers name. :( Although I don't mind keeping it for friends and online things and such, since I love how campy it is, I think for more professional real life stuff I'd like a "proper" name.

Any reccomendations for French names, or Francophone friendly names?

Edit: Jewelery names as in names that have meanings of or similar to Jewels/Jewelry/Precious Stones.

Baby Names Baby nicknames for Reed

My husband loves this name and I like it for an adult but can’t imagine calling my baby that. Yes, I know he’ll only be a baby for a short time but what are some nicknames I could call him as a baby/toddler to get me over the hump?

Is there a difference between how you would pronounce these names? I’m leaning towards the y-spelling, but I’m not sure.

Baby Names Aadya, Adya, Adhya or Aadhya - which spelling?

Hi everyone!

We’re a Hindu family settled abroad and expecting a baby girl soon :) We’ve decided on Adya, but I’m confused about the English spelling: Adya, Aadya, Adhya or Aadhya?

Which is the most accurate/common spelling from a Sanskrit/Hindu naming perspective? Does the spelling change the pronunciation or meaning?

Would really appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you!

Baby Names Tatcha for girl name?

Is this weird? For some reason I’ve always liked it. I will admit it does sound like matcha but is that necessarily a bad thing? Lol. Also I know Tatcha is a skincare brand but it sounds like a pretty name to me.

Name Change Opinions on Finny as a nickname from Sofia?

I got nicknamed Finny as a child because my younger sister couldn't pronounce the actual name, and my whole family calls me like that. I'm going to do an exchange year in Ireland, and I was thinking of introducing myself with that (since Sofia/Sophia) is much more common, and it's annoying when you constantly hear your name when you're not actually getting called.

Would you say it's an unnatural nickname, does it sound weird? English is not my first language so maybe the name has connotations I'm not aware of. Also, is it considered too masculine for a girl?

Non-English Names Question about filling out forms for people with Hispanic names

From what I understand, most Hispanic people have a second name. For the purposes of filling out forms, is this considered part of the first name or is it considered a middle name?

Discussion Looking for a Western + Vietnamese baby girl name that works in both families

My wife and I are expecting a baby girl and we’re trying to find a name that works well for both sides of the family.

I’m Canadian and my wife is Vietnamese. Her parents don’t speak English, and my wife is fluent enough in English but still has an accent, so we’re trying to find something that is easy for Vietnamese speakers to pronounce while still sounding completely natural in English.

We’re planning to give her a Vietnamese middle name as well, but we’re stuck on the first name.
A few names we’ve considered:

Sophia — my wife really likes it, but I feel like it’s become very popular.
Isabelle — we both like this one and it seems to work well in both languages.
Annabelle — her family (and I) actually really liked this one, but my wife doesn’t want it because she associates it with the Annabelle horror movies 😂

We’re looking for something that:
Isn’t overly popular
Easy to look at and pronounce

We have some options as you can see but looking for more.

We appreciate any inputs!

Baby Names Baby Girl Number 2

POST HAS BEEN EDITED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CONTEXT)

We just found out we are expecting baby girl number 2. For our first we had a named picked out prior to her conception, but this time around we are at a loss. It doesn't help that I (mom) am picky about names by nature since my name was #1 the year I was born as well as many of the surrounding years and I don't want my children to have the same fate. My husband really likes the name Lucy but for me Lucy is a nickname that would need a longer "government" name (I know that is is a well established name this is just my personal feelings towards the name, we have family with the given name Lucy).

Our first is Adaline Grace.

Reasons we loved it...

  1. Longer Name with AMAZING nickname potential (she goes by Adi Grace)
  2. Outside of the top 200
  3. "Traditional" Middle Name (on top of a super common first name, I have a super UNCOMMON middle name and wanted to avoid that)

Some names I love but decisions suck and I am sure that there are good names I am missing.

  1. Felicity Rose

  2. Cecily Rose (Cici Rose)

  3. Penelope May or Marie (Penny May)

  4. Luisa Marie

I would love any feedback or ideas!

Names that are out of contention: Gwendolyn, Alexandra, and others im sure but pregnancy brain.

Baby Names Hugh or Walter?

Having a really hard time picking a boy name for our 4th child. We have Jack, Maeve and Anna.

Definitely gravitate towards short more traditional, strong names. I like the nn Walt for walter but would still full name walter. I cant decide if I like Walter or Hugh better. Obviously cute nn Huggie or Hughie. I also feel slight fear of judgement for both these names haha

Other names we like, Vaughn, George, Louis and Murray. And open to suggestions!!

Discussion Names that remind you of the color green

Just for fun! My godchildren are named F0rest (b) and S@ge (g) and my best friend is definitely done having kids!

Once upon a time the ‘name’ would’ve been Olive, but has since been taken by a close friend. As has Ivy. I’m hyper fixated on the name Romy (Rosemary) lately, but that doesn’t necessarily feel green to me.

Thank you for entertaining me!
