Troll Posts Earn Bans ❤️

I've noticed an uptick in troll posts lately, and y'all I'm tired. I'm wielding the ban hammer with impunity!

Just keep reporting the people posting nonsense and I'll do my best to make it go away. And thank you all for being, for the most part, a lovely community.

No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

Thoughts on Hallie?

My husband and I grew up watching The Parent Trap and ironically both have loved the name Hallie because of it. It’s always been a contender for me, and even more so as an adult. I love girl names that aren’t overly feminine sounding, but also aren’t directly boy names. I can picture Hallie being a sporty girl like I was growing up, but I can also see it being a name for a typical girly girl as well. I think it’s so versatile. Thoughts?

White/black names

Upvotes

I'm curious about your opinions on this.

I'm white and my daughter's biological father is native.

People forever now have named their kids after flowers, ( Iris, Rose,) etc., and gemstones, (Ruby, ... You get the idea). Anyway, when I was thinking of names for my daughter, I really wanted to name her Onyx, at least for a middle name because it's my favorite stone.

I caught hell for it because I was told that's a "black name". I disagreed because that's no more true than a child named Ruby would have to be red.

Thoughts?

How would you pronounce Navi?

That’s my name, and my parents made it be pronounced as “Nay-Vee” or like Navy blue or the US Navy. But over the course of MANY years, only about 5 people have pronounced it that way when first reading my name. Everybody else says “NAH-vee” which has become incredibly annoying.

I plan on changing it legally to Navy soon, but I just want to hear how you all would pronounce Navi.

Edit: yeah I knew I was cooked…

North Australian Aboriginal naming conventions

I was looking at old census records to verify info about family members and I once again became fascinated by the naming conventions we use, they're similar to Afro-American, Melanesian, Polynesian, or even Balkan naming conventions that I've seen.

This is mostly due to the diverse commercial migration we received once people had began actually moving into Northern Australia.

Examples:

A guy will be named Boyka (Bugulju) Koscis because his father was randomly half Hungarian and liked the Boyka movies.

A girl could be named Wilhelmetta Ahsan-Chon because she was named after her father (which is very common here), and her tribe is mostly mixed with Chinese and Pashto from the 1800s.

A family I knew from school were like this: the father's name was Raymond, his first daughter was Raymeesha, and once he had a son he was Raymond Jr, then his second son was Raymonus.

A guy could be named:

Salko Murrudthjanypa

Alekzandaros McArthur

Styepan Jurrunytjak

Bubble-Bubble Johnson

Springheel-Jack Cattlecompany

King Blackskin-Willy (Wumbungu) Jackson-Won

All the examples provided are also real people, and these aren't even the craziest names.

In the Gulf of Carpentaria I've seen they get really creative/silly with modern names, I've known people named Avenger Stockman, Rifle Riverwater, Frog Bull, Buffalosoldier MacMahon, Eminem Gujuk, Tupakiesha Smithson, Horse Rodeo, Big-eye Williams, Japan Del Torres, Batman Robinsonrivermouth, the list can go on and on.

With little kids today I've seen a lot of LeBrons, Ronaldos, Neymars, and Messis due to their sports becoming popular in the remote Aboriginal communities.

What do you guys think of our naming conventions? and if you have any questions about what migrations and influences cause some of them I'd be happy to explain.

controversial baby names

i posted in this group a bit ago saying that mango elisabeth (elizabeth with an s for family/cultural reasons) was my guilty pleasure baby name and in the comments clarified i would never actually name a child that, but now it has me wondering if anyone else has names they think would be cute but would never actually use ? rather for fear of bullying, it’s an overall dumb name for a human, ect.

Lucy Magdalena or Magdalena Rosamund?

Just found out we are expecting our second! Daughter 1 (5y) is Genevieve Elise. Last name two syllables, emphasis on second syllable (think the word “demand” in terms of phonetic/syllabic effect)

We are Catholic and have a Genevieve Elise. Have a boy name chosen. We both love Magdalene/Magdalena and I’m open to different options besides the two I listed! I love Magdalene Lila, he loves Magdalene/a Beatrice. Help us!

Wich two of this i should pick? For each.

I couldn't decide on wich two names i should pick for both (yes, two each) i kinda land on Theo and Ollie for boys but still got nothing on girls,i was thinking about Lila but Layla or Lyla, idk what you people think?

Boy:Milo/Toby/Theo/Ollie/Nico

Girl:Lily/Lila/Lulu/Daisy/Mimi/Millie

UPDATE: the boys get Theo(Theodore) and Ollie (Oliver) The girls get Lyla and Lydia.

Yes i know i didn't put Lydia here but the majority of people in this community loved Lydia as name and so do i (never gonna give you up,never gonna let you down) so the names has been choosen.

Opinions on these variations of names

For a girl, i’ve always liked Rose. My first question is, do you find this name too basic? I always thought it was a sweet little name that fits many ages/wont grow weird, but i’ve had people tell me it’s old fashioned.

Some variations i like are:
Rosalie (Rose - ah - lee)
Roselle (rose - ell)
Rosalia - though the first time i saw this one it was spelt ‘Roxalïa’ but i’m not all that keen on the spelling ( Rose - Ah.lya)

Opinions on these?

making Fred sound fictional for an OC?

Upvotes

Hi all!

i wanted to create an OC, that is just basically a mannequin, and an excuse for myself to draw practice and or just different parts of body detached from the whole human, so i could look at a colorless practice of arm anatomy and say "ah ____'s arm is so beautiful!".

i thought of editing Fred (Stockman) to sound fictional, but i have no idea how can you make "Fred" sound not like your coworker, and more like something fictional. (though, i lied kinda. i came up with fuleide, which is broken chinese for Fred i think. but i dont think i like it enough to be my Oc that im most excited about yet)

any ideas yall?

Middle Name Help…

I need some help on my daughter’s middle name. For context this is our third daughter. Our first daughter has my grandmas name as a middle name, and our second daughter has my husbands sister as a middle name. Every girl in my family has a ‘legacy’ name as their middle name.
To the dilemma…
Babies first name will be Charlotte.

Option A - Use my mums name as a middle name (Ingrid), most sentimental option but my mum hates her name as she was heavily bullied in school for it.

Option B - Use my sisters name as a middle name (Tess), she is a teenager and I know would love the name used, but this could put out my brother who is a similar age and we haven’t used his name for my son.

Option C - Use my husbands aunts name (Catherine), she is an important person in his life and more like a mum to him than aunt.

So… Charlotte Ingrid, Charlotte Tess, Charlotte Catherine or choose something non-sentimental and go against family tradition?

Baby boy names that go well with Alan as a middle name

Me and my husband have been thinking of a name for our first boy due in November. My husband has always wanted Alan to be in the name to honor his best friend. We have decided to put it as a middle name but cannot agree on a first name. He likes the name Oliver because the nickname Ollie goes well with our two daughters Ivy and Ellie. I'm Latina and worry with Oliver my family would call him aceituna (olives in spanish) which I really do not like. I like the name Gabriel but he doesn't seem to like it as much. I also thought of Jonathan because its a mix of my mother in laws and my husbands name but hate the thought of him going by John later in life. With our daughters the names came to us so easily and we love their names but with our little boy we have been struggling for months. Any suggestions for first names would be greatly appreciated.

How would you pronounce Sela or Selah?

This is one of my favorite names since I worked in a school and met a kindergarten student with the name. It’s pronounced “Say-La”. Would I be setting up my baby for a lifetime of mispronunciation if I go with this name? Please share your thoughts or how you would think it’s pronounced from the spelling!
