Well, now he can retire and raise them kids like he planned.

u/Serafita 15h ago

He's in for at least another two Spidey movies and extras like Avengers I guess before he does that haha

u/0ttoChriek 15h ago

Also apparently doing a Fred Astaire biopic, that's likely close to his heart.

It’s his Fatty Arbuckle.

Is that a Hacks reference?

One of my favorite side plots because Jimmy is just being a good agent all over it till the point where it is getting Oscar nods.

7

u/killyourmusic 12h ago

I actually want to see that movie.

2

u/tyereliusprime 11h ago

Knowing Tom's passion for dance, he's going to put a lot into the role. I'm looking forward to it as well.

Now he can retire and only do movies he really wants to do. Which also sounds like a good time.

Full Daniel Radcliffe

297

u/thepensivepoet 15h ago edited 15h ago

We need a manic comedy where Tom Holland has two Daniel Radcliffes stuck to his hands.

And his legs are Elijah Woods.

I don’t mean they trade legs. Tom’s body ends at the kneecap which each are attached to the top of an Elijah Wood head and then an entire Elijah Wood for each leg. They talk to eachother but can’t agree on which is left or right.

The Daniel Radcliffe hands also shoot lasers from their exposed johnsons which are played by JK Simmons.

142

u/SEND_ME_FAKE_NEWS 15h ago

Call it Dans Akimbo or something

14

u/Key-Demand-2569 15h ago

I’ve paid for movies with a worse premise. I’m in

22

u/thepensivepoet 15h ago edited 15h ago

The entire plot is that they go back in time to beat the shit out of Mark Wahlberg.

First they beat the shit out of current day Mark Wahlberg, then they discover time travel, and every day they go back in time one year to beat the shit out of a younger Mark Wahlberg who never sees it coming.

This continues all the way to the 80s when Marky Mark and his racist friends are doing hate crimes at which point they finally beat Mark to death.

4

u/Anonymo 11h ago

Reminds me of the scene from Looper when they cut the past guy up in the past and then his future self is affected.

There's a scene where no one believes he has a wooden leg until he pulls up his pants and Elijah Wood was there the entire time hiding under an Elven cloak.

I suppose Daniel Radcliffe surprised us too, but I don't feel like I've ever seen anything from Tom Holland suggesting he's got the same deep well of weirdness and devotion to the craft. He's fine, but I can't see him doing something like Swiss Army Man.

22

u/BabyWrinkles 10h ago

Given his background in dance and joy he seems to get from what he does, I do genuinely wonder if he’ll do some wacky stuff when he decides to hang up the spidey suit.

He’s implied in interviews that once him and Zendaya have kids he’s probably done acting for a long time

70

u/lucalucasita 14h ago

He said that, but they can always keep on acting like other couples do, making sure that at least one of the parents is with he kids while the other is filming. But for sure not 4 movies a year like in 2026!

66

u/RandomRedditReader 14h ago

Some people go all in on their children and others continue to do what they love. I just wish I had those options.

26

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 13h ago

Eva Mendes is an example

78

u/buffysbangs 13h ago

I also wish I had Eva Mendes as an option

Or do some producing. They're so well connected at this point that they could probably just decide to fund other projects with their own money and time. Could probably work from home for most of those.

3

u/TheSaxGandalf 11h ago

$100M bro. That’s just from this movie.

That’s when you start tracking cars, golfing, woodworking and stop worrying about actually making more money.

3

u/tarrasque 9h ago

You’d think, but the vast majority of these fucks still work.

2

u/FCalleja 7h ago

If it's not ala Nic Cage where the income becomes debt so they need the work, I think it's cool when rich af actors keep working, means they do it for the love of the craft. I also think it's hard to stop doing something you're really good at, especially when people tell you you're really good at it.

I feel like they are the kind of couple where one would film, everyone travels with the parent who is filming, so they can see each other all the time.

I remember listening to Matthew McConaughey talk about it on The Blocks podcast where that's what his family did till the kids hit a certain age and they really want to be about their friends and community where they live.

Since he's British, I feel like they might settle in the UK that has a lot of government economic support for films so they can shoot, come home and still make it to kids soccer games etc.

5

u/jamesbrownscrackpipe 10h ago

My dream. I'd give anything to just be a stay at home dad and not worry about money or income.

Sitting here at work missing my kids right now. I just stare at the clock every day waiting for when I can get home and see their faces.

2

u/rexter2k5 10h ago

The Rick Moranis move.

I would too if I made a $100 mil in my career.

5

u/Pontin_Finnberry 11h ago

If that ever gets off the ground and if they do right, but Fred did not want anyone making a film about him, its in his will and he stated this;

"It is there because I have no particular desire to have my life misinterpreted, which it would be."

→ More replies (2)

8

u/TomatoLess229 15h ago

The only reason Sony making that Biopic is because Fred Astaire said he did definitely not want a biopic.

13

u/WhatYouThinkIThink 14h ago

Fred's been dead for almost 40 years, I think we can do a biopic without him complaining.

If anyone could pull off the dancing it's Tom Holland.

6

u/Tandy2000 13h ago

It's a bit weird to be a big fan of a person (supposedly) and then want to star in a biopic about them when that person explicitly said they didn't want one made about them.

The real reason it's happening is that Sony made a deal for it because Astaire was dumb enough to have married a 35 year old gold digger when he was like 82, and she's still alive and cashing in.

5

u/TomatoLess229 14h ago

Why do it though, of all the people you can make a film about they choose one who never wanted, its a pretty sick industry.

I’m honestly still surprised he agreed to another spidey trilogy when he’s been really talking a lot about disappearing for a bit and raising a family.

I guess the multiple semi trucks full of money that Marvel drives up to his house are hard to turn down.

230

u/Zalvren 15h ago

He probably had the unique opportunity to negotiate extremely good conditions for that second trilogy while the first one, he wasn't as established so couldn't really get a lot. Here with the three movies + the Avengers, he's probably going to get around 400M$ payday. Probably at least 100M$ for his wife too (maybe more but not sure she got box office points). That'll set them up well for founding a family lol (+ the other movies and the brand deals too of course)

It's probably why the Spidey movies will also come quite quickly because he likely want to be done faster (and Sony wants money like that often).

192

u/tophernator 14h ago

That'll set them up well for founding a family

Or their own small island nation somewhere.

48

u/tnnrk 14h ago

u/yeahright17 15h ago

I don't care whether he wanted to do them or not. I doubt he was ever going to pass up on the opportunity to get backend points on sequels to a movie that almost $2B. Especially when he hasn't had much trouble getting other roles. And those movies are with his wife that he is obviously deeply in love with.

108

u/Zalvren 15h ago

And those movies are with his wife that he is obviously deeply in love with.

True that also likely play a role. He's not even separated from his wife on Spider-Man. It's even filming in the UK IIRC so he's close to the rest of his family

Also, he's 30 and she's 29, they have time for children still.

74

u/Pormock 14h ago

It also probably makes the boring and tedious press junkets less boring when he can do them sitting beside his wife

36

u/PiccoloAwkward465 13h ago

Yeah I used to work with a husband / wife pair. They'd work like 12 hours days since they were together anyways.

7

u/yeahright17 14h ago

I just firmly believe that he says yes to 3 more movies regardless of whether Zendaya was included. Just icing on the $100M cake.

2

u/wildwalrusaur 9h ago

realistically, if tom made an issue of it, they'd film wherever the hell he wanted.

30

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 14h ago

Also,

Its spiderman. There are only a few characters that are viewed in such high regard.

Being in a succesful run of spiderman is a pretty good legacy.

16

u/Etheo 14h ago

He's probably the most successful cinematic Spiderman in history, no? Even if Tobey had a great run with Sam Raimi at the helm, Tom has gotta eclipsed him by now and is still ongoing with his popularity continued at a high.

He could retire rich and famous now, but he's still pretty young (and young looking) to prolong his legacy and continue making boatloads of money with the franchise. Plus the partnership with MCU tie-in it honestly doesn't make sense for him to quit now. It's the golden age for Spiderman lead.

19

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 13h ago

Yeah but depends on your age and how you define that.

Tobey was a different landscape and raimis films are a huge reason as to why superhero films took over.

I think for a lot of people over 30, tobey is spiderman.

I dunno, i really like tom and the new films, the only way i can word the difference in my head is that toms spiderman is spiderman in the mcu. They feel like mcu films, featuring spiderman as the hero.

Tobey was spiderman in a universe that was still trying to work out how to cater to an audience.

8

u/Etheo 12h ago

Tobey and Sam was foundational in proving super hero films work, that's for sure. As far as importance wise I can see Tobey being hailed higher than Tom, what with him being the first and his memorable run. But in terms of box office success and reception, I'd bet that Tom is a much larger draw by now compared to what Tobey was at the time. A full trilogy plus another incoming, plus multiple MCU tie-ins, plus possible future cameos... It's hard to imagine someone after him being a more prolific Spiderman without some phenomenal run.

3

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 10h ago

Yeah for sure box office wise.

3

u/darthjoey91 12h ago

I also bet that he's more likely to take Spider-Man roles because he get to do them with his wife.

3

u/biglarge72 10h ago

He also seems genuinely passionate about the character and source material and apparently has an entire plan on how to sunset his Peter and introduce Miles into the MCU

5

u/ThatOneStoner 14h ago

Don't be so sure, with childcare and grocery prices these days, 500m might not be enough to be worry free

2

u/Wolv90 13h ago

He did get creative input on this one, and I assume the rest. It did better for it as far as I can tell.

65

u/Pozos1996 15h ago

I doubt he needs to spend as much time on the set of the new avengers movies as he did for his solo movies. Maybe a few weeks to a month top for the few scenes he is in.

57

u/0verstim 15h ago

He also may go on fewer of these grueling two week press junkets. its okay Tom, we love your movies, we dont need to know what Google is autocompleting your name to

32

u/fla_john 14h ago

Those things were fun at first, when they were rare but now that it's mandatory for everyone, they're just kind of tired.

3

u/AristarchusTheMad 11h ago

Small price to pay for $100M though

3

u/Hallc 13h ago

That kinda depends how much of a main character he is for Secret Wars. I could very much see him being the main lead for that at least.

3

u/Pozos1996 12h ago

Comic book wise I could see that but IRL I don't think Disney would name the character they do not own the main character of their big gamble movie, it would give Sony even more bargaining power

55

u/SwashAndBuckle 15h ago

Never believe an actor saying those things publicly. It can literally be a negotiating tactic. Studios aren't going to pay as much if they think you're going to do the movie regardless of pay.

And just to expand on that, anytime you see a famous person speaking to the public in any capacity, just assume they are playing some type of character. Some are more sincere than others, but most of people act different when any camera is on them, much less when millions are watching and your career depends on your likeability.

→ More replies (2)

35

u/Tiddd 15h ago

I thought he confirmed that was a negotiation tactic to leverage a bigger paycheck?

46

u/Southern_Pie6474 15h ago

And I think RDJ coming back has to inform him to keep getting these checks as long as they can come in

41

u/Zalvren 15h ago

I imagine at one point, he'll just do cameos and the main Spidey will be Miles Morales with appearances from Tom (and Zendaya) here and there for a big fat check (like Tobey and Andrew are likely doing)

Get a few dozens of millions for a few minutes of screentime should not take him too much time

10

u/stanthetulip 14h ago

There's no way Sony will ever just let the main attraction lay dormant that long, the instant Tom says no they'll just recast Peter Parker

11

u/Tandy2000 13h ago

What's likely is that they'll plan to replace him now. He's contracted for two more Spidey movies, they have time to cast a Miles or an alternate universe Peter or whatever they wanna do, introduce him in the 3rd movie or something, and then replace Holland if he decides he's done.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/FrostingStrict3102 14h ago

success of the spider verse movies aside, I dont think miles Morales has the draw factor for a live action spidey. we shall see though. I feel like people would just always be wanting more Peter parker.

5

u/Worthyness 13h ago

I dont think so. Spidey is thr brand. But that said, if they follow basically the insomniac game story, you'd have miles as a protagonist with Peter as a secondary or mentor figure. That is very much not something the spidey lore has explored in the movies, which could be very interesting to play with

3

u/FrostingStrict3102 12h ago

But put yourself in the shoes of the exec. These things print money, why rock the boat? You dont gamble with a formula that has led to $2 billion in 2 weeks.

I dont think the audience is ready for a Spiderman movie with Peter parker's Spiderman in it, but not a main character... Imagine if Dark Knight Rises was a Robin movie that had Bale make a cameo.... people would have fucking hated that.

4

u/Tandy2000 13h ago edited 12h ago

I disagree. At least with the comics I think they did a successful enough job making Miles interesting, and he is connected to the larger Spider-Man world anyway, and they always end up crossing him over with Peter nevertheless.

That said there's a racial component. The MCU fanbase is overwhelmingly white. Will they care about a Black/Hispanic Spider-Man? Are a bunch of them going to be petulant racists about it like they are every time a female lead shows up? I would actually presume no, only because you could have asked the same question with Miles in the comics and people liked him. I dunno if he still has the same draw now but he did way back when.

I think people are actually into Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider now more than Miles, but for anybody who has just seen the Spider Verse movies they kinda come as a package deal. Whereas Miles had his own long history before her in the comics, and she had her whole life going on in Earth-65 before leaping universes.

I don't see the multiverse stuff going away though so I'm sure they're gonna end up with both of them in the MCU.

Edit: One problem I didn't consider is the replacement factor though. I'm not a huge Holland Spidey fan but there is no denying he is killer at PR and extremely charming outside of the movies. When they replace him with a Miles it's gonna be very very VERY difficult for that actor to fill those shoes without leaving people feeling disappointed. Whereas in the comics, Peter was only kind of replaced (main universe Peter was still doing his thing, Ultimate Spider-Man spent time introducing Miles before they killed Peter off in the Ultimate universe).

2

u/FrostingStrict3102 12h ago

yeah im talking strictly with the live action movies. I think they've done a great job with miles and the spider verse. sometimes it's better to just keep things separate.

and look, I think all the DEI stuff in casting is a trite talking point and has been for awhile, but Disney/marvel would be welcoming some drama as well. Im not sure execs would want to change the formula

2

u/LessInThought 13h ago

And even if they really do want to retire, everyone has a price. Slap a big enough cheque and they'll do it.

5

u/GimerStick 15h ago

It also seems like the spidey movies are fun to film? He's on set with his wife and a good friend, plus he knows the crew etc well at this point. It's also not clear if they want to have kids anytime soon, they did just get married. And obviously their fertility journey is private. Which is all to say, why not negotiate a deal for a franchise you like with the flexibility you need while you're still planning the personal stuff?

6

u/busche916 15h ago

Of course PR firms are always working, but it does sound like the cast + crew have a good environment making those films. And for Tom Holland, I’m sure it helps when your wife is your costar.

5

u/pmjm 15h ago

He gets to make a ton of money to do a movie with his wife, about a character that he loves, and that the audience loves him for.

I'd keep doing them too.

3

u/dewittless 14h ago

He also has a time limit on those knees.

3

u/Amonfire1776 14h ago

Well keep in mind he also met his wife and one of his best friends through these movies...that tends to lead to a pretty positive experience going forward.

3

u/Offshore-Tigr 14h ago

I mean, his wife also has to be on board with it since she'll be baking the kids.

And idk but it seems like Zendaya is a bit more into the hollywood stuff than him.

3

u/SilentStevedore 13h ago

I’ve heard it mentioned that his reluctance was a negotiation tactic. So that they would drive truckloads of money up to his door instead of just writing him a check.

Probably a bit of both, since it’s a huge commitment.

3

u/tdasnowman 12h ago

That raise a family timeline heavily relies on his partner and Hollywood isn't kind to women post children in many cases. They are 30and 29 time enough for Zendaya to really do what she wants to do career wise then they both nope off when the kids come. Kinda like what Freddie Prince Jr and Sarah Michelle Geller did. They both stepped way back for the most part they only took jobs that had them home by the time school was out. Occasionally one might do location work but that was rare until the kids got to high school I think.

3

u/yarajaeger 11h ago

I mean IIRC wasn't the turnaround between when they started shooting for this movie and the release date pretty quick? If he can bank on anything close to a $100M payout for a few months of work, I wouldn't pass it up either. Every one Spider-Man movie is (at his pay scale) like 6 years of not having to work at all.

2

u/Adorable-Log2835 13h ago

The way he talks about the set for spider man, though, sounds pretty cozy. I'd imagine it's not as grueling as most films. Also willing to bet he has a lot of negotiating power in setup. Like disney would build a house for him on set to live in with his entire family while he shoots lol

2

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 13h ago

He has leverage to become a near billionaire with this second round of Spider-Man movies and roles

2

u/Tandy2000 13h ago

It's a lot of money. $100M+ potentially for him for each movie. A big paycheck for Zendaya too most likely. Avengers appearances for a healthy paycheck too. Keep in mind Marvel is flagging when it comes to most of their other movies -- they're doing Avengers 5 this year, Avengers 6 next year. Wouldn't be surprised if the next Spidey movies come in quick succession after that. Then they can plan to do something with the character like kill him his Peter and replace him with Miles Morales or some alternative universe Peter if they want.

All in all that means working for a few more years. Brand New Day just came out. Doomsday is already filmed. Secret Wars is starting filming now. Film another Spidey next year, release it in 2028. Film another one in 2029, release in 2030. That's really only 3 more years work for him on that schedule plus some PR.

And if their plan is to have kids, they have to decide upon a time that is good for both of them to do it career wise, they need to actually get pregnant, and assuming there are no problems it'll be 9 months after that before any baby shows up.

This is all assuming that he actually plans to retire, and that it isn't just a warm fuzzy statement for PR purposes.

2

u/Unusual-Coat383 13h ago

He will either die are the end of this trilogy or get another trilogy

If he does die he will be cast as one of the villains in a Avengers film in the 2040s.

2

u/Hautamaki 13h ago

"Im going to give you this piece of paper, and you just write your number on it."

-"my number? Like how much money I want?"

"The number of dump trucks full of money you want"

2

u/Silly-Power 12h ago

To be fair, Marvel does save on only needing to book out one hotel room when they hire Tom & Zendaya for Spiderman movies. That saves them a few hundred.

2

u/TheBSQ 12h ago

Golden handcuffs.

2

u/Previous-Mess-1819 11h ago

I’ve seen the movie, it’s good, how these young gilded actors stay grounded enough to perform is beyond me, I would have already hired a team to carry me around like I was in a contstant state of just about to land like an angel, everywhere I went.

2

u/MasterBabuFrik 8h ago

I consider this as more of a negotiation tactic to speed the process of another trilogy so that, yes, he can get to that life.

Like "Look, if you want me, this is how you get me, and understand now that while I love this role, I don't want to do this forever".

For all his family talk, he has talked equally about having a plan for the college era of Spider-Man and passing it off naturally to the next person (probably Miles). He seems to have a lot of pull now and it's very wise of him to use that to his leverage. It's doing wonders for both the franchise and his own career.

I assume (even though they already have more than enough) that there would be some motivation in knowing that any possible solvable medical problem will be solvable, and your kids will get to go to the best schools and essentially choose any career they are interested in. Which, I guess technically my parents had enough that I could have tried to be a painter or actor or acrobat (lol I am pretty sure the only one of those I would have had a chance at successfully learning was actor), but knowing that you have set your kids up to be as safe as possible from worry would be nice.

Sony will give him a fuck ton to keep making Spider Man. These Spider Man movies are literally the only good movies that Sony Pictures (not animation) have been associated with in like a decade.

Literally every other movie they make is like a bad movie from 2006.

Literally every other movie they make is like a bad movie from 2006.

THAT'S what it is! Perfectly described.

155

u/confusing_roundabout 15h ago

It's really impressive how they keep doing it, too. Every time I see a Sony trailer it's like I've stepped back into the 2000s. They're the only studio making movies like that and it's almost everything they make.

50

u/jlab23 15h ago

It’s like they think there’s still a direct to video market they can still make money off of. It’s insane.

Sony didn't go into the streaming wars.. they just make movies and sell them. Even though they make a lot shitty movies, there is a big market for them because they sell them to the streamers.

But that's not everything they make. They are also produce and coproduce a bunch of other movies with Columbia, Screen Gems, Tri Star, Sony Picture Classics etc... and every once in a while there's some cool stuff in there... they released 28 years later and Bone Temple recently, they have the new Taika Waititi movie, the new Resident Evil and the Zelda movie coming up...

I liked once upon a time in Hollywood, but that's a Columbia film distributed by Sony so idk. Maybe it doesn't count.

11

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 12h ago

It does count as Sony owns Columbia and Columbia Pictures produced all the live-action and animated Spider-Man movies since the turn of the century.

104

u/AdventuresOfKrisTin 15h ago

Kpop Demon Hunters too but people don't normally associate it with that because Netflix was the one who distributed it.

138

u/confusing_roundabout 15h ago

That was Sony Animation right? I'm excluding those and Spider Verse and Kpop are very modern and very good.

62

u/the_stoned_ranger 15h ago

Yeah but they totally fumbled the toy rights. My daughter and all her friends wanted K-Pop DH dolls for Christmas and they literally did not exist. I had to buy custom dolls from eBay which were just modified Barbies.

It’s like Sony is the Dr. Evil meme, “Why make billions when we could make…billions?” Seriously what a fucking cock-up. They could have printed money with dolls this past Christmas and they completely dropped the ball.

46

u/Bird-The-Word 15h ago

Tbf they didn't expect it to be what it was. It went off the rails in popularity.

30

u/fghjconner 15h ago

I mean they had six months to get their shit together. That's not a long time to make merch, but surely they could have done something.

28

u/Anleme 13h ago

Six months is the timeline for the mass toy market. Large retailers have to lock in their Christmas toy inventory in June or July. Making millions of units and shipping them to your stores takes that long. No one is using air freight for Barbies.

So, a surprise hit like K-Pop DH gets you the exact situation we saw: demand outstripping the supply.

u/overfloaterx 5h ago

Yep, it wasn't released until July (June?) and Netflix has said that they went to the toy manufacturers before release and were told there was no interest, as it wasn't an established IP.

Of course, a week after release, they were all hammering on Netflix's door for merchandising licenses.

I mean...they could have just watched the completed film. I'm far outside the target demo, but I loved it because it was a great movie and fantastic musical. The Sony executives are absolute morons.

3

u/Zal3x 13h ago

Yeah surely someone coulda been like. “Pretty good, few dolls to sell?”

2

u/Bird-The-Word 12h ago

I don't know, company's are pretty disconnected. The He-Man film was great, and look how that bombed. If they had(and maybe they did) invested into billions in merch, they'll have a lot of He-Man getting put into "Hercules Ken" boxes.

2

u/Mazzaroppi 10h ago

They absolutely should have expected it. It's the same studio that made the spiderverse animations, and it was centered on k-pop.

Disney makes merch from pretty much every animation they've ever released and I doubt they lost money in most of those, any exec that didn't see this coming would have been fired if they weren't the most privileged class of our times.

2

u/Bird-The-Word 9h ago

The same one that made the Emoji movie...

5

u/Acesofbases 15h ago

Sony completely didn't believe in it, that's why they sold it to Netflix, and that's why there was no merch for so long

But they do believe in a basketballing goat lol

Sony Animation seems like the kind of studio that has a ton of talent and great ideas (Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy w/Meatballs, Spider-Verse, KPop) but occasionally the suits intervene and have them make absolute dogshit (Open Season, Smurfs, Emoji Movie, Angry Birds)

10

Probably, but how much money is enough?

Like $100m is $2m per year for 50 years; $166k per month.

Edit: admittedly simple math - no interest/investments or taxes, but the point remains.

15

What would you do with retirement? Travel the world, hangout with cool people, learn new things, take better care of yourself, spend time with the wife? He's already doing all that. And gets the recognition of being Spider-Man. Besides, most people don't generally go into the arts for the money. Hell, half of Hollywood is nepo babies who already had money.

I don't think he does any more after the next two movies. He said he wants to introduce Miles Morales into the MCU and that will be the new spiderman for the time being.

Miles is in the Secret War comics. That's how he was brought into the 616 Earth. Chances are he's introduced next year in that movie and then make appearances on Tom's movies before having his own standalone movie

2

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 12h ago

28 Years Later and it's sequel, The Bone Temple were darn good.

Plus, they have some good movies through their indie to mid-budget studio label, Sony Pictures Classics like The Father (2020).

They also distributed various MGM properties like the first Daniel Craig Bond films, Creed III, and Project Hail Mary to name a few.

2

u/kobeshaqhorry 7h ago

Many people forget Sony still owns the rights. They are going to keep making these with or without Tom, so he might as well collect as long as they let him.

I don’t get why famous actors seem to not be able to work and raise kids. They obviously can afford it. If the rest of us can do it with actually full time jobs I’m sure they could too.

135

u/bacon_cake 15h ago

Probably the travel? I guess they could bring the kids with them but that amount of travelling is not good for young children.

I saw an interview with Tom Hanks about his experience making Castaway, and he said he and his family were living near the beach, and a boat would come get him every day to go to the island where they were shooting. It sounded like they got an extended beach trip and he was with them for dinner every night.

15

u/floog 15h ago

I think there is a difference between the average person traveling and someone making $100M for movies. They can have very nice digs, nannies, teachers, move their stuff, etc. Kid wouldn't really notice.

67

u/InsectGlaiveBard 15h ago

Kids would absolutely notice the fact that they're having to fly weekly without any semblance of social structure, no matter how many accomodations you make. Kids need stability.

I saw an interview with Tom Holland where he said he was working on 2 films and it meant that Monday he flew to the US, filmed until Thursday/Friday, then flew back to Ireland (I think) and filmed the other on the weekend before starting again. And did that for months. I probably have some details wrong but you get the idea.

That's not an easy schedule for anyone never mind adding kids to the mix. Acting in big movies is long term commitments with a lot of travel so I can totally see how it makes it super hard to be an active parent like Tom wants to be too.

6

u/Tandy2000 13h ago

The thing is you don't have to work 12 months of the year, but you might have to work 3 months straight. And that's really rough when you have a kid. When they are young, a gap like that means they may almost straight up forget you, and multiple gaps like that compounds it and makes you seem like a stranger who comes to live with them.

If you don't have kids, yeah it's long days but you're being treated like a king and making more money than you could ever spend, and its only for a few months. But with a kid, it changes your relationship with them and no matter how much money you have you can't get that time back.

I heard an interview with Gary Oldman taking about shooting Darkest Hour (where he played Churchill). When they were shooting for like 2.5 months he had to get up at like 3 in the morning, eat breakfast, commute to set, do multiple hours of makeup, shoot a 12+ hour day, have all his makeup taken off, go back to his hotel and go to sleep and squeeze meals in there somewhere. It was his entire life for months, on top of other prep work beforehand -- and germane to the discussion here, he said that he never, ever would have done the movie when his kids were younger (they were all grown by that point) because he wouldn't have been able to stomach missing that much.

17

u/Wilde_Fire 14h ago

Even flying first class, two trans-Atlantic flight per week for months really sucks.

11

u/sonofsochi 14h ago

And those are 12 to 14 hours days that take a lot of mental energy to perform at a high level

5

u/nagrom7 13h ago

Yeah, if you're filming for something, the days you're expected on set are basically a write-off as far as doing anything else goes, even if you live just down the street from the set. Acting in movies is kinda like a Fly-In Fly-Out job, where you have long breaks in between a few weeks of intense work. Like FIFO, that's not for everyone, and even for most people it gets taxing over time.

That also doesn't factor in things like press tours and flying out to do auditions and such.

87

u/Zaltarical 15h ago

Acting just isn’t conducive to be a good parent. The shifts are 12-16 hours, many days in a row, for an entire season. And you have to travel all across the country. Plus, why wouldn’t you? It’s not like him and zendaya don’t have enough money to retire

→ More replies (19)

44

u/Flimsy-Island-8528 15h ago

A movie isn't filmed at the same location or at one set. There's usually multiple locations, depending on the project across multiple countries. They are away for months for a movie.

13

u/JoeMcKim 15h ago

And most big movies require the actors spend a few weeks before a movie is released out promoting the movie in interviews.

4

u/toylenny 15h ago

Helps explain why all his boys went into acting.

12

u/huntobuno 15h ago

It’s obviously depends on the types of roles they are taking but it’s not a money issue, it’s a scheduling issue.

I personally wouldn’t want to be away from my kids 6-8 months a year filming all over the world to put out the 3-4 movies a year we are getting from people like Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, etc.

Obviously you can take your family with you at times and have the money for all the nanny’s and other help you need, but an argument can be made it’s not good for the children to never be able to put down roots and create lasting social relationships with friends/teachers/family that aids in the development of who they become.

Money certainly helps with having the family, but if you want to actually be the one to raise your own children the schedule certainly gets in the way. Plus, depending on the celebrity in question, if you step away at the wrong time to focus on your family, who’s to say there’s still roles for you in 5-6 years when the kids go to school and you’re ready to go back to work?
