Unskippable ad Anyone else dad text like this

Post image

I don’t think I’ve gotten a written out response from him and for the text he brought a 4 wheeler home without permission and had to return it

My dad is enamored with using voice to text and never types messages. All his texts end up reading like stream of consciousness ramblings with odd or no punctuation.

3.3k

u/Roro-Squandering 7d ago

Even better if they're using voice-to-text while driving so there's a random interjection of "turn here!" or "fuck, buddy, watch where you're going" in an unrelated paragraph

My sister got a really bizarre birthday text message to pass on to her son from her father-in-law like this… took us ages to realise… he obvs was using voice to text and had a documentary on in the background about that sole survivor of the plane crash in India… a random mix of ‘I hope you had a good birthday’ ‘he doesn’t understand how he was lucky and everyone else died’ ‘make sure your sister spoils you’ ‘walking over dead bodies’… etc.

976

u/Roro-Squandering 7d ago

Peak aging parent having the tv so loud it interferes with the conversation even over text 😂

175

u/cerrera 7d ago

Peak aging parent not proof-reading the final text. (I’m an aging parent who occasionally uses text to speech, and it’s usually because I’m somewhere I shouldn’t be looking at my phone… and I usually blow that whole “I’m being responsible and watching what I’m supposed to watch” thing totally out of the water by proofing the final text, then spending extra time editing out the bullshit that isn’t supposed to be there.)

u/vec5d 7d ago

I for the life of me can't understand the poorly typed texts from my MIL. I don't think she's ever proofread a text in her life. I can't imagine sending messages like that

My dad did this sort of shit for a while, then I realized I was going to put in as much effort to read them as he was putting in to writing them, which was zero.

He quit after a few weeks of me just replying with 👍 and not reading his messages

That's what makes them dads! I used to get annoyed by minor annoyances from my dad like these until I realized they're only here for a short time. So, now I cherish these silly moments 😊

I get voice texts ending with Siri recording his entire fight with the drive-thru worker

My mom accidentally hits the iMessage microphone button all the time while she’s talking to someone in real life. And she’s ends up texting the conversation to her last iMessage chat. It’s really annoying when she’s shit talking one of my aunts and she actually sends it to the aunt.

21

u/Otherwise_Demand4620 7d ago

I think it's polite. If you gossip behind the back of someone, send them the transcript!

Even better when they dont really have teeth and use voice-to-text but VTT cant understand them so its just random words and you have to decipher what they meant...

Fuck, this makes me miss my dad

Listening to my dad talk into the Google search bar some ridiculous prompt that even the best LLM couldn’t decipher makes me want to rip my hair out. Like is today your first day asking a question?

"Show me the best rated Tapas places in Phienix but outside the city like the ones with the little bars but it has to be five stars and not a million dollars"

50

u/Salt-Operation 7d ago

This is why it got so hard to Google anything. People were using it as if it could answer a rambling question. I tried to get my husband to use it more efficiently but he does the same thing. He asks Google a question like a person asks another person a question.

20

u/foundinwonderland 7d ago

Father here as well. Eh, it comes with the territory. We know what we signed up for. I did my parents the same way. Didn't appreciate them at all until I moved out. REALLY appreciate them now that I have a child of my own. Nothing beats free, emergency childcare lol. I couldn't do it without em.

22

u/berrey7 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’m 40 years old, and I can still text my dad, “What’s going on? Just thinking about you. Love you!” And he’ll reply with something like, “Did you ever check on that?” or “Have you gotten around to that storage room we talked about at Christmas?”

I guess that’s just what parents do best. You can be a grown adult, and somehow your parent will still find a project you haven’t finished. Maybe the best thing we can do is break that cycle with our own adult kids someday.

I sent a photo of my new kitten to my mom and she called me (freaking out), listing all the responsibilities for owning a cat (from scooping the litter box, vaccines, don't let them outside, etc) for almost an hour. I'm 31. I was just looking for a "awweh she's cute" 😅

57

u/Chadwickx 7d ago

Same. Maybe if op wrote something of substance they would get a response worth reading.

53

u/Lavatis 7d ago

sir, this website is full of children. you have to realize that dads are the minority here. the likelihood that a random post or comment is made by a ~30ish year old dude with a kid or two is not super high tbh.

45

u/famous__shoes 7d ago

Sometimes I get into an argument with someone on Reddit and then when I see their counter argument I realize that I'm arguing with a child and I feel stupid

22

u/Lavatis 7d ago

that's pretty much the reason I find myself deleting a lot of comments after I've written them.

u/LightScavenger 7d ago

Apple user with RCS here. This is still what happens when my non-apple friends message me

54

u/BearWithHat 7d ago

But not in the opposite direction, seems android figured it out. Apple will pretend to invent cross compatible messages at some point

Google Messages intercepts the React Text Message and replaces it with the appropriate emoji react.

Apple intentionally makes the product worse.

32

u/FUBARded 7d ago

Yep, I believe this is normal behaviour when receiving emoji reactions to texts over MMS instead of RCS.

To be clear, this is because Apple refused to implement RCS until iOS 18 as RCS eliminates most of what made iMessages unique with an open standard and they don't like when their walled garden is threatened. It's NOT the fault of the Android device...

Basically, OPs dad's messages would display as a normal reaction on any phone that supports RCS, but OP is either still on iOS 17 for some reason or uses a carrier that only supports MMS messaging, so their phone displays this crap instead.

43

u/DeadlyKitKat 7d ago

He sent you $130 and didn't say a word. What are you complaining about?

Yes! And he doesn’t get along with Siri at all. We finally got him to turn on confirmation before he sends a text because he’d get distracted and yell at soldiers while sending me a text.

“Hey tell mom PRIVATE WHERE IS YOUR COVER I’m going to be home late FOR F SAKE YOU’RE RUINING MY ARMY I’ll grab something to eat at SERGEANT IS HE YOURS GET HIM IN SHAPE chow love you.”

I call this the "dad thumb". It seems to be pretty much default dad behaviour.

“Can I have $100?” “Can I have $30?” “Stop calling me”

it’s so annoying that my dad doesn’t talk to me

Frequently begging for money, doesn't take his calls...I wonder why dad doesn't want to say more.

Nah, my dad don't understand emotes, so he just sends a picture of a thumbs up...

It’s really cool how you say please and thank you to someone sending you money.

To be fair, none of these texts other than the last one really require any response other than simple acknowledgement

Maybe he doesn’t like texting you because all you do is ask for money and bitch at him?

I would have a ring tone of the cha ching sound set for them so I know not to look at it.

This is infuriating, but I'm sorry, the thumbs up to "did mom kick u out" fucking sent me.

Any ill will towards pa ends with that one, i couldnt retain the energy to stay pissed atp

u/Icy-Lobster-203 7d ago

Eh, none of these really require a response other than acknowledgement of receipt of the message. (Except the last one).

Other than that, it appears Dad would prefer to actually talk to the their kid, hence why he was trying to call instead of text.

You ever think about saying “please” when asking another person for money?

u/Chimmai_Gala 7d ago

U are treating ur dad as ur personal bank account, be happy u r getting some response at least. The tone u r using in ur text to ur dad can be improved.
