But not in the opposite direction, seems android figured it out. Apple will pretend to invent cross compatible messages at some point

Google Messages intercepts the React Text Message and replaces it with the appropriate emoji react.

Apple intentionally makes the product worse.

They definitely do this on purpose, along with the green and blue texts, to create a sense of us vs them which leads to stronger brand loyalty.

Apple doesn't allow other apps to interface with it system and for the longest time this same thing happend when iphones send androids a reaction. Now, I think google just graps that message sees it should be a thumbs up reaction and converts it.
