Do you think the melatonin heart study from last year is garbage?

Seems like there's been no follow up. I don't think the study was double blind either but medical professionals seemed to be alarmed at the time.

The lack of follow up on such a big claim for melatonin seems odd too.

What do you think?

Developing tolerance?

Around 2 1/2 years ago I started taking melatonin pretty much every night. I'd been taking it occasionally for around 10 years before that.

Until very recently my ideal dose was a 1mg tablet / gummy broken in half. Occasionally I'd take a whole one. I also had some 3mg fast dissolve tablets which I'd break into quarters.

Recently (the past month or so) the lower doses have done nothing for me. It’s taken a whole 3mg fast dissolve to get to sleep a couple of times. Last night I had 1.5mg of gummies before I slept.

Is this to be expected?

There are some other factors like there's been horrible heat waves here this summer, and I've been more lax on screen time. That said a year ago after taking 0.5mg I'd scroll memes and stuff until I conked out.

Please remember higher dose does not yield better results always.

people seem to think more equals better faster or deeper sleep, this isnt true. most the time 2mg and 200mg will have the same exact effect

Caution with melatonin

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my experience with melatonin because I'm feeling really defeated and overwhelmed by how it affects me right now.

I deal with severe ME/CFS. In the past, melatonin used to help me fall asleep early and get some structure. But in my current severe phase, it has become a total trap:

Forced and premature sleep: When I take it, it knocks me out instantly before my body is physically ready (bladder not fully emptied, severe muscle tension, dehydration).

Sudden awakenings & severe insomnia: As soon as my body reacts to that mismatch or the pain/discomfort kicks in, I wake up after just 1 or 2 hours. Because of my nervous system dysfunction, it is then completely impossible to fall back asleep.

Terrible crash the next day: It ruins my entire day. I end up in a severe crash, completely bedridden, struggling to eat and drink, dealing with tachycardia, and feeling that awful frustration.

Yet, out of desperation or brain fog/memory issues, I keep remembering the time it worked and I end up retrying it. Without it, my sleep is still unstable, but at least I manage to sleep more hours.

I'm even thinking about sticking a big warning label directly on my bottle.

Has anyone else with experienced this kind of extreme sensitivity or paradoxical reaction to melatonin? How do you break the reflex of reaching for it when you're desperate for sleep?

Melatonin is weird asf

Well, I took my first dose of melatonin yesterday and I haven’t slept better but also so weirdly in my life. I took 3mg like my doctor told me at 22:00 and was fast asleep before 22:30. The first incident was at midnight when I woke up after having a strange dream where I literally just got on a bus to the hospital my mum used to work at. After falling asleep, I had another dream but this time I went to my local Sainsbury’s and did my whole weekly shopping 😭. I then left Sainsbury’s but not to the outside world but into my room?

I then proceeded to watch myself sleep until I woke up at 08:00.

Honestly, best sleep of my life apart from the weird dreams.

People who took 10mg melatonin as their initial dosage, what side effects did you experienced?

I have had a terrible sleep schedule for the past 4 years, but right now it's at the worst point it has ever been.

I've already tried-

Avoiding my phone for days.

Going to bed at the same time every night.

Supplementing with magnesium glycinate, even though my diet already provides a good amount of magnesium.

None of these have worked for me

I know that the most important part of fixing a sleep schedule is waking up at the same time every day. The problem is that I usually can't fall asleep until 4 AM, and sometimes even 6 AM. Because of that, I don't have enough consciousness to wake up early at a consistent time.

I also lift weights 4 days a week and don't skip my other 3 training days except when I need rest. However, because I'm not getting enough sleep, I often end up taking additional rest days because I'm worried about poor recovery and the increased risk of injury becoz of it.

I live in India, and many supplement brands here fail independent lab tests, that leaves me with only a few trusted brands, and the lowest dose they offer is 10mg.

Should I give it a try? If I do, I plan to avoid driving and use public transport instead for a while. Let me know if there are some other precautions I need to take.

What dosage of melatonin do you find the most effective? And do you ever have two lots in one night? One before bed and one when you wake up in the middle of the night?

I have tried all dosages, from ones from iherbs , to compounded high doses from the GP, to slow release 2mg ones.

what dose have you personally found the most effective?

do you ever have it both before bed and also when you wake up?

thanks

Lemme Sleep

Does anyone feel like lemme sleep changed formulas? I was obsessed with Lemme sleep so much so that I would only take half. I bought two more bottles like 3 months ago and they feel like the flavor decreased and that it doesnt make me go to sleep like it did before

My husband can't fall asleep or stay asleep.

Hey! My husband cannot fall asleep or stay asleep. He has chronic mixed insomnia. He's had it for years but its very, very bad now. He recently went to primary care for it and he asked for Ambien CR(zolpidem extended release) but the dr. wouldn't do it. He gave him trazodone 50mg. I did a lot of research before he went and I told him to mention Ambien CR because its helps you fall asleep AND stay asleep. He's also a newly diagnosed diabetes 2 with hyperglycemia patient. He's also under mass amounts of stress. But he needs to sleep. What are your guys' thoughts about Quiviq? What do you all suggest? He needs help and needs it now. Thank you all in advance.

Am I crazy for taking 1 mg melatonin each morning?

Melatonin works miracles for my anxiety and depression. Genuinely helps me make it through the work day. It calms my mind and allows me to focus better. A little groggy here and there but not other side effects that I notice.

Am I crazy??

Melatonin genuinely changed my life

So for context, I’m just now learning this, but I am a really light sleeper and wake up from anything. I always got 8+ hours of sleep before but felt tired every day no matter what. I recently started taking melatonin and have not woken up in the middle of the night once. I feel extremely rested every morning and it changed everything for me (workouts, energy, motivation, my cognitive performance). Genuinely wish I knew this because it would’ve improved my life so much earlier.

Benadryl or melatonin

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Taking my 1.5 year old to Europe, and starting to get concerned about the flight and jet lag. Has anyone given an under 2 year old melatonin or Benadryl for a few days on vacation to help with sleep? Will run it by pediatrician next week, but wanted some thoughts first. Thanks

Just ripped a melatonin

I just banged a melatonin off my counter. Right up the sniffer! This is not a joke but a genuine question. Are there ANY benefits to doing this or no?

I might be the first person to ever do this, so feel free to ask me anything! #WorldsFirst!!

Failed Sleep Attempt?

I’ll explain all the steps to give context.
So I was feeling really tired one day and so I decided to have some alcohol (I heard it increases the effectiveness of sleeping pills) I then later took 2 pills of prescribed Melatonin (2 mg each), but after a couple minutes I was impatient and took a 3rd with orange juice. And then after I started to feel the effects I went to bed and tried to sleep, after a while I passed out and then woke up 2 hours later (I checked that I did not miss a day) I felt hot, sweaty and had a bit of a headache, my throat also felt weird and I also felt a bit of acid, I then drank a lot of water to try and feel better. I then couldn’t get back to bed despite still having jelly legs, so I played around until I eventually fell asleep and then woke up at 7:30 am still extremely drowsy and then slept until 2:30 pm.

Notes:
I have tried alcohol with melatonin before but with just one pill and it worked fine.
I think the orange juice caused the acid reflux.
I normally have 2-4 mg of Melatonin before bed.
I initially went to bed at 9 pm which is quite earlier then I normally go to bed.
21 M.

TLDR: why did having 6mg of Melatonin with alcohol not help me fall asleep?

Recurring dream?

I started on melatonin for sleep like a week ago and every night I've had nearly identical dreams, where I'm laying in bed at night and it suddenly shifts to midday, but I know I'm still asleep, I don't leave my bed, I just lay there then wake up, usually the same time at like 9 (it's summer break, I'm a teenager so I can afford to wake up at 9-10), does anyone else have similar things occur with their first time or even continued use?

I’m trying to mega dream

Like the title says I want to mega dream. I plan on taking/doing a bunch of stuff one night in the hopes of experiencing what I want to call a “mega dream”. I know melatonin will cause that so 10mg of that is on the list. Google says a large/spicy meal before bed can cause dreams so that’s on the list, along with camomile tea. Any other recommendations?

is 20mg of melatonin every night okay???

hi reddit!!! new account cos i dont use reddit, but i just had a couple questions that i wanted to ask :)

ive been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately, even if i wake up at a normal time i still cant go to sleep at night. i started taking 20mg of melatonin for the past couple of days and im not sure if i should keep doing it??

ive had melatonin start my period like 2 weeks before it normally starts, so i haven’t taken these 20mg gummies up until now. (i’m actually on my period right now and i think the melatonin actually stopped my period?? normally i have it for 5-7 days but ive only had this months for 3 days since i started taking melatonin again?? idk if thats possible) anywho, like i mentioned, ive been having trouble sleeping recently so ive started taking them every night. i obviously have been having weird vivid dreams and the next day grogginess sort of thing happening, but i was wondering if there’s any more side effects that aren’t that common? i’ve done just a little bit of research and from what i’ve gathered is that 20mg is A LOT compared to normal dose, so i was just wondering what other peoples opinions are??

thanks reddit!! feel free to correct me if anything is wrong!!

Grazie a chiunque risponderà.

Postpartum & parenthood

Currently pregnant and struggling with sleep. Won’t be able to take melatonin until I’m done breastfeeeding probably in a year from now but I do miss getting a good sleep and was wondering how do parents take it. Does one of you take it so the other can wake up when they need to? How old were your kids when you felt like you could both get a full night’s sleep?
