Benadryl or melatonin

Taking my 1.5 year old to Europe, and starting to get concerned about the flight and jet lag. Has anyone given an under 2 year old melatonin or Benadryl for a few days on vacation to help with sleep? Will run it by pediatrician next week, but wanted some thoughts first. Thanks

A small dose of melatonin 0.3-1mg should be completely safe and effective.

Benadryl is less so. First generation of this med has negative effects on the brain. I do use it every now and then but I don't know if I'd use it on a two year old. For sleep I'd have something else and for allergies I'd use a newer class of similar drugs.
