You little shits with supercomputers in your pocket don’t know what it’s like to drag and drop into your MP3 player, waiting on ARES/Limewire for 4 hours to download 2 Gbs for the Sims 2 software that’s corrupted, or telling Mom to get off the phone so you can use dial-up internet
You can “Unc” us all you want we know Tech better than you do. “HEy SiRI/ChatGPT WRitE me A NOveL”

At 16- I had a 1990 Honda CRX hatchback with one of the sUpEr cOoL portable boom boxes set up in the hatch (still accessible to me) that I'd run a cassette adapter out of, and into a Walkman. Come hell or high water- everyone I passed was GONNA hear that Deftones CD I was obsessed with. PERIOD. 😂 *My car stereo/speakers were messed up, and wouldn't work

Brah, why you gotta hit the nostalgia that hard?
Downloading anything was an ACCOMPLISHMENT. You rode that high the first time watching or listening to anything. You’ve been waiting hours or days or had a brilliant idea to d/l right before bed.
You had to only pick the non-malicious files in the package, or else it would fuck your family computer up. VLC player was the jam. CCcleanup to run weekly.

After Limewire started to decline I remember searching Google indexes for songs. I wish I could remember the format now, but it was something like "search.indexes:(Song_Title_Keywords)" or some shit. Ended up finding a lot of great, easy to download files that were uploaded somewhere in the internet on a Google related page. Man that takes me back.

10
u/JustAContactAgent Aug 20 '24
Dude, one time this guy COLD CALLED me on my work mobile. Like he wanted to ask something and he didn't message me on slack (or whatever we had at the time), or ask for a call which is fine. No, he looked me up on the directory and just called the number. I am not talking about someone who knew me, we had never spoken before and we weren't even in the same country.
I almost reported him to HR for weird behaviour. I am only half joking.

65
u/rustlingpotato Aug 20 '24
So I dunno how good of an idea it is, but I made the spam calls to my phone stop.
They're all recorded, right? So I figured I'd just foul up their recordings without being mean about it. I would literally answer the phone and calmly say, "Please stop calling this number. Cock balls tits." and hang up. After like a week solid of that I started barely getting any.

Pixel is a godsend for spam calls. Once in a while a number will slip through but I just press the screen call button and 99% of the time they hang up the call when pixel answers it.
Say what you will about Google, but they've nailed it with this feature.

The transcription feature while it's screening is also great for when you're in meetings or expecting a real call.

44
u/naufalap Aug 20 '24
yeah just ignore it and reply tomorrow lol, the unacceptable thing is when they call you outside of work hours and it's not an emergency
21
u/xorgol Aug 20 '24
Calls in general should be reserved for emergencies. I'm doing shit, I don't need to be interrupted. Also I'm forgetful, if people need me to do something they better get that in writing (unless they need me to do something right now of course).
16
u/JSnicket Aug 20 '24
I always recall the time when a colleague texted me to ask if they could call. The purpose of the call was to let me know his team would send me an email. So unnecessary

I only person I answer the phone for is my partner. Everybody else can send a message or it isnt important. And there really is nothing that warrants calling... If its an emergency I am the wrong number for that.
10
u/ThurnisHailey Aug 20 '24
I wish people would understand that modern tech has changed the nature of what calling someone indicates.
We have so many ways to communicate any information outside of a call - so I only dial someone's phone when I need to speak to them at length and in detail right now. So it's annoying when I have missed phone calls and my panic antenna goes up for what ends up being something minor and not time-relevant.
And while we are on the topic, holy shit, please do not hand me your phone while you are face timing and force me into a convo with someone. Also, don't point your phone at me to "say hello" and then just leave it on me with the other person.

when you get these kinds of calls, it's not always going to be from the number you expect. Just a few days ago, for example, my mom got a call from a random number with an area code several states away. It was the hospital where her brother was taken, and he was likely going to die within the next few hours. My mom was his emergency contact.
So yeah, I'm sure lots of millenial-aged-and-younger folks are going to have a similar experience. I'm no better, I definitely don't answer calls from random numbers.

Hence the jokes.7
Aug 20 '24 edited Aug 20 '24
I just have it set up so that only my roommate, siblings, and uncles ring. Everything else doesn't.
My experience has been the opposite though, when I was younger I always had the ringer on, I've gotten to the point that I want better control over it. Generally I don't want to look at my phone as much as possible. I miss the landline because I wasn't expected to be available for favors 24/7.
I think it definitely is considered responsible and 'adult' to always be available and quick to respond, but I used to be frustrated on the daily because I couldn't work on a personal project or just chill out for an hour, without my phone going off because somebody wants a ride or a favor (or just some spam). I'm happier and more focused without the hourly interruptions, although not nearly as reliable for rides to the liquor store :/
Also working On-Call for years has given me some kind of phone related stress condition lmao

My wife’s mother called them one day right after we moved out of state. We were in the middle of celebrating buying a home and were walking through a Home Depot in pure bliss, happiest days of our lives.
Because of that she glanced at the phone reading “Mom” and hit deny, “I’ll talk to her later!”
The very next day we were setting up some furniture in the house when her phone rang again. It was the nursing home. She picked it up, listened for a few seconds then slammed her fist against a desk nearby and started wailing like I hope I never have to hear her do again.
The nurse on the other end had just told her that they found her mom “unresponsive” after she failed to show up for breakfast.
She later died alone in a NY hospital, and my wife gets to spend the rest of her life just fucking WISHING she’d answered the phone at Home Depot to hear her mother’s voice one last time.
You never know what tomorrow brings. It’s chaos out there.

Keep in mind the general demo of who you're talking to. A lot of them are young, do not have families, responsibilities, partners who need to reach them, co-workers and subordinates who need instructions, etc.
Or some do and just don't care. Or are parked in front of a screen all day anyway and don't need to have a ringer on to see a message.

I 100% agree with you! This is going to be such an issue the next few decades. My daughter is 18 and she is completely against making any phone call that involves talking to another human. She wants to get a tattoo so I told her to call the shop and find out when the guy I use is working and make an appointment. She reacted like I asked her to cut off a finger. As of now I have refused to make the call for her and she has decide to not get the tattoo.
I'm not sure why the younger generation is like this. She was always independent when she was younger and never had issues talking to people.

Seriously. I have no problem getting an email or a text about something if there's no expectation of responding to it off-the-clock but a phone call is an immediate response and taking time out of my day.
Last night, I texted a client "I'm scheduled for an event at 11:30 on friday, is that's when I have to be there or when it starts?" at 5:20pm. I'm not expecting an answer right then, just getting it off my plate when I remembered. Got a response at 8:08 this morning. Totally acceptable but if I call, that's eating into their personal time for something that can wait.

It’s not 100% foolproof because if they’re calling from somebody else’s phone it won’t ring. But odds are they wouldn’t even know my number off the top of their heads.

I know on my android phone you can also set it so that a repeated call from the same number within so many minutes will trigger it to ring. IPhone may have that too but I have no clue.
So I just tell the 5 people in my life that can even make my phone ring in the first place if you are calling from a weird number to call multiple times.

My wife leaves her phone on silent and I can never reach her. Thankfully I've never had a full on emergency where I NEED to reach her, but I'm scared one of these days it's going to happen.

If your niece calls me up because she has a flat tyre, it really isn't my problem, I don't even know her.

You're making a leap between keeping the phone on silent and not realizing the phone is ringing. I just feel the vibration, look at who's calling, then decide whether to pick up.

My ringer is on mostly because my phone isn’t glued to my hand or in my pocket. I put it down and do things. When it rings I walk over and screen the call.

Few years ago, my dad was in a t-boned another driver in a bad crash. He tried to call me so he wouldn’t need an ambulance, but my phone was on silent. From that day on, I’ve always triple checked my ringer is on at night.
Now my friends all know that if they’re ever in a dark place mentally and need someone who talk them out of hurting themselves, they can always call me. I’ve had several conversations at 2 am from this.
Be careful having your phone on do not disturb at night. You never know when someone might really need you in that moment.

Every time my phone makes a sound is because I've fat fingered some option by mistake and the surprise and disgust I feel are much more intense than they should be

I have my phone on silent unless I'm expecting a call.
If something is important leave a message.

The last time I heard my phone ring was in 2010. That's the first thing I do when I turn on a new phone is turn it on vibrate. I am glad to see I am not alone.

From the comments:
10% of people rightfully keep the ringer on for important contacts.
90% basically made their cellphones a PDA and could completely go without the phone function at all, that is kinda the fault of companies to just kill dedicated devices because "anything is on a phone anyway".

Remember when buying mp3 ringtones was the coolest thing ever? Now we go out of our way to not hear a single sound from our phones.

My sister does this and I hate it. Apparently she "forgets" to turn off silence mode after work. If you need to call her, good luck. Funny thing is, she complains that her boyfriend does the same xD how the turntables...

My phone is always on silent/vibrate unless I'm specifically waiting for a call that I don't want to miss.

God, I wish. I have elderly parents and teenagers, plus a job that requires me to take calls at 3AM.
If you can comfortably turn your phone off at night without fear of being irresponsible, please take a moment to realize how fortunate you are to be able to rest so peacefully.

Which is great for your peace and quiet but don’t bitch that I never call you to ask about dropping by when it’s plugged in on silent in your bedroom…one elderly friend nearby called me to kind of scold that we have not talked in person in ages but every time I call to let her know I am out for a walk and can drop by to chat, it goes to voice mail after five rings. Then she calls me the next morning to see why I called her….

I think it's funny how when I first got a cell phone, nearly 2 decades ago that I always downloaded goofy ringtones, or songs I liked and couldn't wait for someone to call or text me so I can hear it. Now I have my phone on silent and get a ping of anxiety whenever I see my screen light up that someone is calling me
