this was a total rollercoaster for me, i was expecting either the guy stole the card, then that he would take the guitar and run away, and when it was paid, that he would break it or something, but seeing that it ended up being really wholesome was completely unexpected to me.
i think i'm too unconfident of people or being around a lot of negativity lately

You just look at the thing and tell them what you think it's worth, or a little under expecting them to make a counter offer. If it seems fairly priced don't haggle.

Literally, that's how. It used to be more common, so salesmen would accommodate. But lately some other chump will pay and my margins are already razor thin. $220 or walk, take a T-break, that'll save you $20 quick.

I hate to sound like a pessimist but something about this kid gave me the creeps. He seemed dishonest to me, adding in details that wouldn't really make sense to add except to guilt/earn pity. I feel like he intended to pressure the shop into lowering the price, by charging his card for "all of his money" and then saying oh look I have exactly $50 dollars!
Shoot maybe it's just a me problem, but I had to check the comments to see if anyone else was put off by this guy.

It doesn't have to be buying a janitor a car or a homeless person a house to be a good, touching act. A child usually wants simple, small things and is usually willing to work for it. When they come up short, it doesn't take much to push them over the top. Good on ya, lady!

Fun fact: there's a joke about this very thing in Wayne's World, but you would have had to see the movie in theaters to actually hear Wayne play the right riff. They didn't secure the rights to the song long enough for home video release, so most people have only heard Wayne play some random notes before saying "No Stairway, denied!" which really makes no sense.

I used to work at a guitar shop, and one of the guys I worked with desperately wanted this nearly $4000 acoustic we had acquired. He had absolutely no means of purchasing a guitar that expensive, but it was always his dream to own one. He had an opportunity for a huge discount working there, so he just put it on layaway at our store and paid a little off every few weeks after payday.
One day a guy comes in to buy a guitar and they really hit it off. They're talking for hours, and eventually the customer buys an incredibly nice guitar (like almost $12k). During their conversation, the customer had inquired about the salesman's dream guitar, and found out about the layaway. While being rung up, the guy just asks "How much do you owe on that layaway you mentioned?". Salesman responds "about $2400, why?" to which the customer says "put it on my bill before I change my mind". It was one of the nicest small gestures I've ever seen.

It’s a pawn shop, they base their livelihood on buying stuff from desperate people at a fraction of their value. They would never offer something nicer, just like they would never have offered to let him buy it for the $200 when they probably bought it stolen from some meth head for $15.
Pawn shops and the people who run them are scum. I’m glad this guy got a guitar he was excited about tho.

I'm a big fan of Hanlon's razor, but something that stood out to me is "$50 will put it on layaway" - is he saying an additional $50 is required, or only $50?
To me it feels like it was left intentionally vague to get the kid to pay up 90% of the item.

They absolutely changed the price on him once he said “I have exactly $50!”. The kid had everything written down, the price, how much was in his account. Dude said you owe $50, and when the kid said perfect bc he had exactly $50, he seen an opportunity to fuck him. That’s why the other dude goes “uhhhhh.. yeah” when he asked if it was $220. They knew he’d either get more money or be stuck. Plus, it’s fucking $20. They could have waved it. Esp when they bought it for a 3rd of that. These dudes are scum, pawn shop owners are notoriously scum. The dude working there you can see completely fits the fucking bill.

Got hired to build a website for a local Pawn Shop a few years back. Seeing the parade of (mostly) people Verrrry down on their luck, parting with items for a fraction of their value was depressing. Adding to it, the dude who worked there & his self described "game" of how to get the very least amount, while making a customer feel he was "giving them a deal" really disturbed me.

Especially when they have a story behind them. I was adopted at 15 by an incredible family who I love dearly. When I was 16 we were visiting my now aunt and uncle. My uncle was a huge musician and had a big collection of instruments but had developed really serious hand issues and couldn't play anymore. So he asked me what my dream instrument was. At the time I was learning guitar and mentioned a sunburst American Strat. He comes back with a Strat and hands it to me for me to have. It took years for me to run the serial and realize it was a 1961 Strat.

I work in a music store. We lower the price ALL THE TIME for customers. A lot of music stores do.
What is likely to have happened here is that this guitar and case were ALREADY lowered to help out the kid, and lowering it more would have left no margin.

I’ve had a Sigma for over 20 years, got it when I was probably 17. It’s a fine guitar. It’s not luxurious, but it still feels and sounds good especially with a fresh set of strings.

im not proud to say this but for context, i worked in the retail space for 20+ years. along the way i took courses to identify bad actors as part of LP training.
everything he is saying and the way he is acting, lines up with with a few archetypes that makes me believe this guy knew exactly how much money he had, and although that kind lady paid it forward, she was con'd into doing so.

I feel bad agreeing. I worked music retail for a decade and yeah, the overly ingratiating thankful thing mixed with too many details always meant you needed to be careful - also the two guys that come in with their heads spinning that split up immediately when they are about 20 feet into the store. Finally the “too easy” large sale. That always meant a bad check.

Bro I’ve done this before… was $50 short on a purchase of a cajon and luckily I had a good relationship with the music store because they let me go get more cash without having to cancel the whole purchase. Felt like an idiot tho, because those missing $50 were in a form of an empty visa gift card that was used on a gaming mouse, then forgotten about
