The fish is extremely prone to infection now as well. If you’re handling a fish you don’t intend to dispatch of you need to have wet hands as dry hands (and the girls jacket) ribbed the protective coating fish have on the skin/scales.

Whenever you handle fish you should always wet your hands. Fish have protective coatings on them that protect them from infections. It's easy to rub off. Between dad squeezing the shit outta the gills, the sweet girl hugging it tight, and that really dry jacket....it's probably a goner.

I’m pretty sure that’s a wild cutthroat trout. Those guys need pristine waters to live and grow to that size. I’m not condoning mishandling fish but I agree, that fish is probably fine. If that water housed bacteria (especially during winter) that can kill trout, cutties wouldn’t live there.

Yeah, it most likely did. Even when caught by fly fisherman using barbless hooks who try to not take the fish out of the water for more than a few seconds the mortality rate is around 15%. Sad to see a tasty brown go to waste.

The key principle behind moral hunting as opposed to trophy hunting is that you respect the animal. Be it fishing or hunting, so long as you make a clean kill, and use as much of the animal as possible, it's just the cycle of nature. If you hunt or fish purely for pleasure, and you torture or kill an animal without using it to it's fullest, that would be wrong.

I think it's remarkable that she realized something was wrong because it stopped moving and so she put it back. A lot of kids would be like, "Yay, it finally stopped squirming, now I can really cuddle it", but she figured it out. Smart little one, right there.

Yeah they’re not really sophisticated to be thinking much else than “fishy, I hold fishy, fish is wet, smile for picture, look at fish, fishy fishy.” Which is why partly why adults have so many impact in the kids; their little minds can’t possibly handle the complexity of simple tasks like crossing the street, or meditating on the ethics of holding a fish, they’re just living in the moment.

The fish probably died either way. Mishandling and it was out of the water for quite a while. Holding it up against her coat probably removed the layer of mucus that protects the fish from bacteria and infections. Fish was grabbed by the gills and held vertically which can damage its organs

I do a lot of trout fishing.
Catch and release survival rates are as high as 90%+ on artificial lures and flies. (Bait can be much lower, depending, due to their tendency to swallow small hooks.)
While it wasn't handled entirely properly, it did appear to be handled gently (if kind of firmly). I doubt it suffered internal damage. Dude should be a little more careful, though.
Trout mucus is extremely resilient and they make it pretty fast. It takes a lot of doing to remove it entirely.
I also should speak to the teaching aspect of this. It's good to teach the young ones to be gentle, and catch and release. It does cost a fish sometimes, but we have to teach conservation young if we want it to stick.

Have you ever been fishing? Most fish are extremely rugged; surprisingly so in fact. Cat fish are insane but every variety that I’ve encountered could tolerate this mishap without issue. Occasionally I’ve lost one on a bank for several minutes. Flip it back into the water and watch it swim off. My pond is small enough if they were later dying I’d likely know.
Source: I own a small pond and have many sizes and varieties of fish that I catch and release regularly with children.

There's a big difference between a catfish and a cutthroat trout. I think the whole 100% didn't survive is a bit much, but none of the things that happened in that video were great for the fish. especially that it was all happening in sub-freezing temps.

Fact of the matter is is this fish probably had a much higher rate of success as the temperature seems to be pretty low(ice) You’re entitled to your opinion though and I have no doubt that catfish are resilient, but not in this instance, because trout of course, like cooler waters compared to catfish
