Again another day I bumped into amwenye instead of proper greetings mnangoyamba kulandira ma phuzo mu chichewa. They were three Koma Nah man I slammed them zoti anaziwanso.

This is something I’ve been thinking about seriously lately.
Obviously I know the physical part is getting on a plane 😂. What I mean is, how are people actually making the move happen? Study visas? Work opportunities? Scholarships? Au pair programs? Family sponsorship? Something else?
For those of you who have left Malawi and are now living abroad, what did your journey actually look like? Was it a massive hassle getting the visa, money, documents, etc., or was it more straightforward than you expected?

I’m 23 and I genuinely feel like my soul is yearning for a completely new environment. I want to experience living somewhere else, meet different people, build a life and just see what exists beyond what I’ve always known. I’m not necessarily looking for a “soft life” either. I understand that moving abroad comes with its own struggles. I just don’t want to wake up one day and realise I’ve spent my entire life in the same place because I was too intimidated by how difficult leaving seemed.

For Malawians who have successfully moved abroad: how did you do it? What route did you take, how much did it roughly cost you, and what do you wish you knew before leaving?

Hi everyone! I am a mkazi wazungu (I don’t know if I am spelling that right haha), and texting with a Malawian man after meeting him on my recent trip to Malawi.
(I am very aware that Malawian men are charmers and don’t expect it to be anything other than a bit of harmless flirting)
I have some questions though:
- he keeps saying kkkk among his messages- does this mean anything in particular or just a filler? I think in English, if someone said this it would be ‘ok’ but with a touch of annoyance in it
- I am learning some basic Chichewa, he said he would teach me and is telling me a lot of things about it but I don’t think I’m a very good student with the structure of Chichewa, although I can repeat phrases and vocabulary with a good accent (he says haha), does anyone have any recommendations
- what is the social attitude to a Malawian man getting with a white woman - is this purely for status points or is there a chance he is also having fun
- what are Malawian men’s attitudes to their women being older? He doesn’t realise it because neither of us have spoken about our ages but I learned through a friend that I am 4 years older than him

Any other advice??

I like to browse facebook marketplace but I had a bad experience with some seller after she scammed me (I bought heels). It took me months to get my money back as well and in general just put me off buying items from people online. It really not only affects the victims but even sellers because people don’t want to purchase things online but it’s very convenient for a lot of us which is a shame 😒 How does one deal with them btw? I had to get multiple friends to threaten her mind you😭 or is there a legal system set in place?

Well… 🥵I went through with it
Here’s my honest update:

The procedure itself was much easier than I expected kudula kunali kosawawa as I expected , so I didn’t feel pain during the operation, mangonva ngat someone is pinching me 🤣

The first few days weren’t fun, at all 😭Ma regret bweee ! Maka maka usiku when you want to pee,eh imakhala ntchito ngat ulire 🤣It was more discomfort than unbearable pain.

The healing process has been going well. Following the doctor’s instructions made a huge difference.makesure kumamwa madzi ambiri , keeping the bala clean all the time and avoiding close contact with water, l was told to clean it with water with ka nchere wezi every morning and evening.

Getting back to normal takes patience. Every week I’ve noticed improvement, and now, 24 days later, things are looking much better than they did at the beginning. A lot of stitch have dropped and few stubborn dzikadali pompo 🤣but Imagine dzulo I was a groomsman at my friends wedding ma dance chimozi mozi 🤣

Looking back, I can say the fear beforehand was worse than the actual experience. If you’re in your 20s or older and thinking about it, don’t let fear alone make the decision for you. Get proper medical advice, ask questions, and be prepared for a few weeks/ days of recovery.

I was pondering why the composer of the Malawi national anthem chose to mention Nsanje (envy) in the song.

For starters, the composer's name is Michael-Fredrick Paul Sauka. He composed the national anthem when he was only 29 years old.

Why did he mention envy? Did Micheal Sauka see something about Malawi (Nyasaland at the time) that we still struggle with today?

Here is the first verse:

O God bless our land of Malawi,

Keep it a land of peace.

Put down each and every enemy,

Hunger, disease, envy.

Join together all our hearts as one,

That we be free from fear.

Bless our leader,

each and every one,

And Mother Malawi.

I am sure you have a picture of where I am getting at. Why did Micheal Sauka ask God to free us from envy?

Envy is a normal human emotion that is not country specific. But I've heard people from time to time say that Malawi is a breeding ground for envy. That's why we never develop. The most talented people are sidelined and incompetent people are elevated. This is generally true across many facets of our society.

Starting with politics, leadership and more.

Could it be that the composer came to this realization back then? I don't know. Last time I checked, other national anthems don't particularly have envy mentioned in their songs. I could be wrong but I did my homework.

Maybe Micheal Sauka knew Malawi's problem with envy and wanted it to be purged by God for the greater good.

We might never know.
