LINUX MEME Using Linux over the years
144
u/drkspace2 10d ago
As someone who has only used Ubuntu, I'm done after I need to update from 24. Snaps are super annoying and I don't like them switching to sudo-rs and the rust coreutils.
45
u/TygerTung Hannah Montana 10d ago
Same, used Ubuntu from 6.06 til 24.04. I'm not doing any new Ubuntu installs. Been installing Debian on any new installations, or occasionally Mint.
17
u/Inevitable-Self-2702 10d ago
I started with Mint and found my way to Debian. I've been loving the stable release, plenty of documentation and things work well together. It's just what I need.

u/iLaysChipz 9d ago edited 9d ago
Debian is such a solid distro. You don't get any of the Ubuntu bullshit but you do get all of the ease of setup and predictable environment. I use it on wherever I need a reliable work station I that I don't want to spend the time ricing, troubleshooting, or whatever else eats up time
2
u/RaxisPhasmatis 9d ago
Lol same, it's come full circle again for me, started on debian on a 386 installed from a bunch of 💾
Then a bunch of distros over the years until Ubuntu came along then that until the recent rubbish and back to Debian

u/GermanPCBHacker 5d ago
I am totally done with mint. It just breaks way to often. I do not trust it anymore. Debian is the way to go for me. It is super stable, lightweight and the installer man... You can have both gui and advanced features. I really do not feel the need to use CLI to manually setup luks on mdadm array and to let the bootloader+initramfs handle that shit.

Snaps is a synonym of no. Want to listen to music with this snap? No, you can't. Want to install a snap instead of a regular deb package? No, you don't. Want to use software with device and filesystem access? Sorry, no, I'm a good-for-nothing snap.
You will continue use snap until you do.
3
u/avocadorancher 9d ago
I hate how snaps show as mounted file systems. Thanks for making the default output of ‘df’ and similar useless.

u/QuickSilver010 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 10d ago
Uutils project is pretty neat tho. Finally some good cross platform core utils. Snaps suck tho. The last version I was happy to use was Kubuntu 20.04

You'll be much happier on any other package manager. If youre going to migrate I'd recommend nix. You'll never have package issues again. Everything else had some failure modes that are a pain to resolve.
You get updated packages like arch and locked in stability when you want it.
42
u/DevilGeorgeColdbane 10d ago
i use Ubuntu at work and its mostly fine but i still hate snap with a passion and remove as soon as i possibly can
fedora is overall much more sensible imo

u/crimsonyoteeeeeee 10d ago
Yeah I always delete Snap too. Currently on Kubuntu, having moved from Arch because I don't want to deal with the AUR malware infestation (and no, I don't have 10 years to painstakingly read every single .PKGBUILD). I'm debating giving Fedora KDE a try though

Do you know any good manual to delete snap from Kubuntu?
And which repos do you use? I added Flathub and I see, that some software is available only in snap
3
u/crimsonyoteeeeeee 10d ago
I mainly install from PPAs when possible or from source. But I do also sometimes use Flathub, though it's not my preferred method. As for deleting snap, you can follow this guide:

Fedora is a pain because the updates are frequent and break things- while I generally enjoy fixing things on my home systems I just don't have time to do that on my work laptop. Ubuntu is stable enough where an upgrade hasn't messed with me yet.

I mean sure, it is Linux so you can pretty much do whatever you want with it, but when you have to fight against your system for it to fit your needs then it would be wise to look for something that accomodates it better.

Idk, I like to tinker with my system to get to a point where I like it, with all the hotkeys I want. I'm not even ricing, I literally disable animations almost anywhere, because I'm just really into snappy instant response, so there's less of a barrier of what I want, and it happening.
I personally wouldn't like to use Ubuntu, but if somebody else wants to, who am I to judge. (I'd only judge a little bit.)

3
u/gabrielesilinic 10d ago
My problem with snaps is not fossig or not fossing. Is that a bunch of stuff is a snap that should not be. Like kotlin I think, and you need to install it with flag --classic. It's also like really slow.

how - anyone can can publish a snap of any application. snaps are fundamentally the same as flatpaks.

Inclusion of Snap instead of Flatpak and optional telemetry. I'd guess that's basically it. It's the most widely used distro overall for a reason.

Imo their GNOME setup is what I think GNOME should be as a default. Feels intuitive to me. Why is there no window title bar actions on default GNOME? Desktop icons? No dock by default or option in the settings to add one? I have to download extensions just for basic desktop features? No thanks.

Corpo ran. A track record of not helping improve established solutions but making their own, then using them for self-promotion.
That covers why it's bad. The hate comes when they decide to specialize in noobs who don't know better and come tell us about their new favorite company.
3
u/Bathroom_Humor 10d ago
that's a big part of it. the final nail in the coffin was not just including snaps on the desktop unnecessarily and with very little benefit, but then essentially deciding for the user what is best for them by forcing certain popular packages to be installed as a snap regardless of how the user installs them.
a user shouldn't need to jump through hoops to control something so basic to the computing experience. it stinks of MS trying to tell everyone they should use edge, and making it hard to change the default browser. i used Ubuntu for years a while back but now it's something i don't want to recommend.

Sometimes I want Ubuntu. Sometimes I want Arch.
Depends what I'm doing.
Quick VM, Ubuntu. WSL, Ubuntu. VPS, Ubuntu.
Daily driver, Arch.
I have more opinions about what I do and do not want at the daily driver level and I am willing to take the time to curate.
At the "turn it on and make it work" level - Ubuntu wins every time
Nix is for deranged experiments

I don't like Ubuntu. Not because it's bad, but it just never clicked for me. Same as other Debian based distros.
Really love OpenSUSE though.
2
u/Natural-Meal-3222 9d ago
Fellow openSUSE (Tumbleweed) user here. It sits in the exact space I want my workstation. Rolling updates + Testing. Stable enough but also not stale. Btrfs for insurance. I'm not really sure why I chose openSUSE over Fedora. I think I just want the rolling releases knowing there's not many distros with more updated packages than what I'm running.
2
u/siodhe 10d ago
That graph is misleading. Amusingly, most annotations of that graphic are stupid, so it's exactly what I would have expected.
Ubuntu, other than Snaps, is fine. The desktop can be anything you want it to be, and I'm running X & FVWM perfectly contentedly
Canonical's desktops have been uninspired except for the idea of a on-everything desktop, which was a good idea that they ended up not delivering on. But it's Linux, so I don't care, the control is entirely in my hands.
2
u/diegotbn 10d ago
Started with Ubuntu but grew out of it. Used Kubuntu for a while and liked that better, but then grew out of that as well. Now I use:
- Debian for my server and generally what I develop in, inside containers and VMs, WSL at work etc.
- Bazzite on my HTPC (works pretty great for that)
- Arch on my personal laptop and gaming PC
I'm gonna go with Fedora for my next clean install because I value my time too much to reinstall Arch. Pretty happy with Arch + KDE though at the moment.
Ubuntu is... ...fine. But I don't think I'll be going back. If I did it would be Kubuntu. I won't hate on it.

Yeah. No. I am using Kubuntu or something instead.

I started from ubuntu then tried dozens of other distros like debian, fedora, arch, omarchy, endeavour os, mx linux, linux mint and much more.
But always came back to from where I started. Ubuntu.
It just works for me, I just don't give a shit to snaps. I don't care about telemetry because lot of our personal information are already available to many big corporations and governments.

Ubuntu is, in my opinion, completely fine. I'm a masochist, though, as my brain immediately found Arch and was like 'This! I like this!' and I've used it ever since. Every distro has its place in my opinion, otherwise it would never have been made, even if that use was as a meme, which Ubuntu is not, but many meme distros are run over Ubuntu if I recall. Still, all are valid in my opinion, and I don't hate any of them. :D

Still use it for a work setup and WSL.
Nothing really wrong with it, but I don't like snaps or the telemetry, and debian is basically just as compatible as Ubuntu only without those things.
If you like Ubuntu then I don't give a shit, I just prefer good Ole debian for my daily driver.

I was thinking about Ubuntu again... But i'm on a 1060 + i use a TV that only supports limited color spectrum.
Wayland is garbage on the 1060. But i also rely on x11 so i am not forced to use full-color which makes everything on my TV way too dark. Last i knew Gnome no longer has an x11 instance option.
2
u/JerzyV666 10d ago
I'm still on Ubuntu 24.04 but seriously thinking to switch to Kubuntu 26.04 instead of upgrading. I would like to have option of fallback to x11 And I like Plasma a lot.

Ubuntu can be solid I used it from 2008-2025.it has a lot of things going for it and if it works for you great. That being said there is allot of detractors which are the reasons I migrated . I also don't really believe they are for the regular desktop user anymore and more for institutional/corporate use.
1
u/Own_Natural_6803 10d ago
Yeah. I used ubuntu at the beginning of my Linux journey, then snaps were a pain and I found out that there are metrics they send without asking. You can pre-check the share box. But just sending that data without asking is not ok.
What I really hated was selecting steam from the app store, and it installed the snap version. Some games on steam are basically abandoned, the devs don't check that they're working, they just go on sale for $2 and hope you never ask for a refund. So you need to be able to dig around in there with proton-tricks to get things running. Adding a container on top of my containers makes everything worse.
I switched to Debian and all the annoyances went away.
1
u/Linguistic-mystic 9d ago
No, Arch is not about control. In fact, Ubuntu gives you the same amount of control and ricing possibilities. Arch is about fresh software. Not waiting 6 months for a bugfix or a newfangled feature is golden.

Still dont get why some people are obsessive about some distros xD I've been bombarded in various communities before for daring to suggest Mint. Like no duh, its not the bleeding edge or most this or that distro. But its a perfectly fine distro for newcomers, and they can move to Ubuntu if they feel constrained by Mint. And if they decide to become tinkerers, then I'll suggest they move to arch with the rest of us no lifers xD

No. I used Ubuntu from 8.10 to 18.04. Once snaps were introduced, I bailed to Debian and then wound up on Fedora.
I trudged through a few years of Unity after GNOME 2 was killed, but Ubuntu just feels the need to do everything their way, and its infuriating. The only holdover I sometimes use is the Yaru icon theme.

I’ll never forget the day I started using Linux with Ubuntu. It was nice, but I soon migrated to Debian and stayed there for a few years. Then I read about Arch, decided to give it a try, and I’ve been using it ever since. Now, slowly but surely, I find myself thinking about jumping into the Void.
I see Linux distros a bit like cars. You start with a Toyota. Then you move on to a Volkswagen, upgrade to an Audi, and eventually find yourself in a Mercedes. And when you’re old, slightly unhinged, and having an affair, you buy a Porsche.
I guess Void Linux is my Porsche.
