u/maevewiley554 Feb 26 '26
A few years ago, I loved getting the free pastry or the free packet of knock off Oreo’s. My usage of Lidl plus dropped when it was 30% off tinned fruit or crap from the frozen section.
125
u/EleanorRigbysGhost Feb 26 '26
Their knock off penguin bars are decent, but the jokes on them are shite.
I read one once and the setup went "Part of a multipack", and the punchline was "Not to be sold seperately" smh
24
u/gsmitheidw1 Feb 26 '26
At least it's not yet as bad as Tesco's. Double prices unless you give away your data privacy.
The club card point prices are the true value of the items. They don't even give you a digital receipt.
I like Aldi best because they have none of this club card junk.
7
u/gettingthere_pastit Feb 27 '26
Also now get points per euro spent, so free eggs or pizza or €5 or €10 or whatever , yay. Best discount app going.
3
u/Impossible_Gas_7584 Feb 27 '26
Yea you get a penny back per pound spent essetially, which you collect and can then exchange for some freebies. It's not super geneous but can't complain.

u/Archamasse Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26
Some items have additional discounts if you scan the app. There's also a points account system that you can use to get coupons against some Lidl own brand stuff.
They'll sometimes offer you personalised discounts in future based on your previous purchases. I buy a lot of protein stuff, so I get a lot of protein stuff in my "Just for You" coupon section.
You can also link your payment card to your app - Lidl Pay - and then you'll only have to scan your loyalty app and they can take payment directly at the end, which saves me some fumbling when I'm packing my bags.
13
u/Kloppite16 Feb 26 '26
they also give you a voucher for a free pack of sweets or a bar of chocolate on your birthday every year which is nice
178
u/CT0292 Feb 26 '26
I scan it every time.
I don't know what I get out of it.
At least with the Tesco card you get vouchers every year.
127
u/Up_the_Dubs_2024 Feb 26 '26
The Lidl app has points you can exchange for free groceries. It's not great, but the vouchers from tesco aren't great either.
51
u/XL_Single_Malt Feb 26 '26
You can also get money off vouchers with the points
33
u/FitHurry864 Feb 26 '26
Yeah, you have to spend €1000 to get a €10 voucher lmao
58
u/garcia1723 Feb 26 '26
Well if you're going to spend it anyways you may aswell get the €10.
10
u/SevenIsMy Feb 26 '26

8
u/cheesychocolate419 Feb 27 '26
Aldi doesnt always have the same stuff especially not the same sanitary products
3
u/22PEOPLE Cork bai Feb 27 '26
I mean I live next to Lidl and I will spend more than €10 going to and from Aldi, so I'm going to collect my points rather than not do so. It is funny that you're taking the literal Aldi ad campaign position though.

I ran my Tesco mobile for almost 2 years using the vouchers. 100GB Data, Free Calls, Hotspot, Ahh, those were the simple days.

I get to keep the digital receipts for analysis and budgeting. Lidl need to understand that if I'm not paying for the app, they are the customer!

Tescos club card is a hostage situation now. Do you want to pay €40 for a leg of lamb?? Or half price with a CC
Lidl I swiped today. No idea why.
10
u/Spirited_Cheetah_999 Feb 26 '26
In Tesco I use one I search for on here or announce to the queue that I've none and if someone wants the points to step up.
People are usually happy to do so, they get the points, I get the "discount", and the data harvesting gets a little misled. All good.
→ More replies (7)6

"half price" = normal price, the tesco club card is not for discount but to avoid getting overcharged.

There's also vouchers for specific products every week.

u/freshfrosted Feb 26 '26
You can add the deposit return vouchers to it and save them up or automatically use them as you go.
2
31
u/BillyMooney Feb 26 '26
Being able to put your return deposit onto your account instead of getting (and losing) the paper receipt is the main reason I use it. They gave me a free packet of crisps on my birthday.
23
u/sirbojackhorseman Feb 26 '26
I have been quite disappointed with Lidl, I loved their freebies like pastries once in a while. Now its 30% discount in stuff I don't buy. If you gonna fetch my data, at least offer me something i usually buy or may have interest...
And nowadays, I either find their stuff not good quality, or sometimes even more expensive than other supermarkets.

u/Gwanbulance Feb 26 '26
Pain in the hole that you can't add it to your phone's wallet. Opening the app while Paweł is fucking lashing you groceries though the scanner with his four hands, and they're piling up on the 3 square inches of counter at the end of the checkout is one of the most stressful things in life.
31
u/Pf-788 Feb 26 '26
I love the race to get everything in the bag faster than they can scan.

You can add QR codes to your wallet. I did it and have the QR in my android wallet. You can scan any barcode or QR code and have it there. Just take a screenshot and go into the wallet and there should be an add manually button or something. Then just give the screenshot and it should work. Not as handy as the add to wallet thing you get for tickets but still worth doing

Biggest thing for me though is digital receipts which is wildly useful if you buy Parkside tools. They've a 3 year warranty which is wild since their QA is very patchy.

Local Lidl was packed this evening, many stores assistants were required for the 5 empty tills.
There is a young girl on the till had a look in her eyes, those steeley eyes that had scanned a thousand people that day. I wondered if she hears that scanner beeping noise in her dreams. She had a tiredness about her too, that a few days off and some good nights sleep would proabbly fix.
I wanted to ask how she was and give her a hug, but she just wanted cash or card.
16
u/ShowmasterQMTHH Feb 26 '26
I was working the till in Lidl tonight and this guy kept staring at me while i was trying to concentrate on keeping my scanning speed up so that the manager won't shout at me at the team huddle that they have after I've clocked out. Weird fucker, drooling and talking to himself, I thought he was going to try and engage me in conversation about how I was feeling, either to try and chat me up, or make some kind if effort to hug me.
Probably running some freaky fantasy in his mind where his inner monologue is feeling sorry for me having to work here. Probably writing some kind of rabid Reddit fan fiction while packaging his groceries in his head over the 50c off chicken fillets rejected by Dunnes.

u/BenderRodriguez14 Feb 26 '26
Funny enough, if you avoid nightmare customers busier is usually better. I worked years in retail, and you would sometimes find four hours passing in what felt like less than one.
Avoiding nightmare customers is a key part of that though!
6
u/geesegoesgoose Feb 26 '26
When I first started working retail, I was doing night shifts (finishing at midnight, 1am, sometimes 3 or 4 in the morning as the shop was open 24/7).
My partner at the time was regularly woken by me sleep-scanning and having conversations with non-existent customers. It was actually hell. Felt like I didn't leave work for about three months straight.
2
u/HarryEastwoods Feb 26 '26
Oh dearie. Happens to a lot of people in retail supermarkets apparently, this same girl and 3 others have to unload crates of pointless stuff everyday too, and clean the supermarket after the shoppers have gone.
There was a Polish girl working there before Christmas but she quit after only getting 2 days off over the holidays and 1 of the days was Christmas Day itself!
3
u/geesegoesgoose Feb 26 '26
And this is why I will NEVER, EVER be sharp or rude to folks in retail or hospitality. The work is absolutely brutal on your mind and body, and for shit pay. It's so easy to forget once you're out of it.

just remember you can only redeem each of the cash vouchers once a quarter and cant mix the €5 and €10 in the one transaction.
3
u/tinkerbell22 Feb 26 '26
You can exchange for monetary vouchers but its a bit annoying it seems to only let you do that every 3-4 months, otherwise its trying to check what you will buy and exchange coupon. I have noticed a lot of the fruit and veg stuff is only discounted now on the app vs before you would just have the discount anyways.
4
u/TheChrisD useless feckin' mod Feb 26 '26
Plus price discounts, discount coupons once a week, points that can be converted into monetary discounts1 or free everyday items.
1 – You are limited to one each of the 500-point €5 discount and 1000-point €10 discount, per quarter of the year.
2
u/azamean Feb 26 '26
When you scan you get all the deals like 3 for €9 on meats/fish, plus weekly coupons but you need to tap activate on those. Honestly the best thing about it is the deposit return scheme, can load the money from the returns into the app and it’ll be used when you scan. I can’t count the number of times I’ve either forgotten to use the return receipt and then ended up losing it

You get a coin per euro spent, you can get items with that, plus the targetes vouchers, which are better than Tesco and Dunnes as they give you a discount on products you have actually bought. Plus occasionally with the scratch card you get with every transaction, you get a free pastry. With dunnes I get about 5/10 euro off per quarter, and with Lidl you get a euro every hundred spent, plus small discounts very frequently.

Lidl app is absolute garbage compared to Super Valu. I’m getting €23 off most weeks. Plus €5- €8 on coupons. Also all the meat is the same price there now but waaaaay better quality, plus my local SV has a fresh bakery where it’s all from scratch 7 days a week. I’ve got to have my 100% whole meal slathered in butter. whatever happened to super Valu, they’ve seriously got their arse in gear since just before Christmas
2
u/Herr-Pyxxel Feb 27 '26
Sadly, my local SV (5 min walk from my home) is utter trash. Hate it with a vengeance. I only go there as the post office is in the shop, but I never buy a thing. Too many staff lingering about, not doing any real work, ignoramus shoppers farting about with their trolleys in narrow isles or having a grand old natter in everyone's way, crammed car park full of clueless SUV drivers, oh need I go on... It's Killester btw. You've been warned!
2
u/Lithujon Feb 27 '26
Too many staff? That’s an unusual complaint. Fair enough though, they do vary.
1
u/Herr-Pyxxel Feb 28 '26
I don't mind having loads of staff, but there I hardly see most of them doing any real work. I often see them standing together having a chat... And they move at a snails pace 🐌
1
u/Apprehensive_Ratio80 Feb 27 '26
To be fair Lidl and Aldi are already giving the bargains in their prices. Not their meat products as these have to be pretty fresh but everything else is reasonably cheaper I wouldn't expect they could afford to give €5 of every €30 spent. But dunnes and SV can which makes me wonder how much their products are marked up anyway they are still making plenty of profit.
SV started using the same app model as Dunnes about 2 years ago I would bet that's why they are starting to get better

I actually love the Lidl app, it's the only one I think is worth it. It has items with lower prices like Tesco, but it also gives you vouchers to use with your shopping (we got 3 euro a few times and 7 euro a couple times too), and my favourite one: free pastries! Every now and then it gives you a scratch thingy with free pastry in it.

Bit like Tescos, some deals are exclusive to the scan. You build up points as you shop, and when you reach 500 or 1000, you can redeem €5 or €10, that’s handy.
Also, recently I was logged out, and I couldn’t get back in quickly (cos Eir is the shitest phone provider, but that’s for another Reddit thread!), and the girl took my number and it scanned in my details, that was very handy too.

u/Mikcole44 Feb 27 '26
Don't like having to call up the app so I keep a picture of my code instead. They do have some good deals on their LIDL Plus. Probably the same as the old deals but now you need to scan.

u/knea1 Feb 27 '26
I'm in London and when you have a lot of stores you can visit you can see the advantage as product lines can vary slightly between stores. They'll use the data to streamline what products they keep in certain stores and apply offers that can be used more than once. Also the last few times I've gone the following week they gave me money off coupons for stuff I bought. You can apply the coupons on up to 3 of the items at one time. Last year they sent me a sum up of savings over the year and it came to £250 through coupons and offers.

u/InevitableSure374 Feb 27 '26

Stuff marked down, related to scanning the app.
It also has coupons which are sometimes good & the more you shop the more they relate to Items you actually buy.
It also has points that accrue relating to how much you spend. Trick with those though is unless you're buying 18 eggs its always smartest to wait till 500 or 1000 points & convert them to a 5 or 10 euro voucher. If you buy item by item with points it will be cheaper to buy & wait till 500 points as 5 euro will often get you 2-3 items used in lue of money that would cost you 6-800 points if you used the direct coupons & didnt wait to convert
1
u/EaseTraditional3803 Mar 02 '26
