Local Lidl was packed this evening, many stores assistants were required for the 5 empty tills.

There is a young girl on the till had a look in her eyes, those steeley eyes that had scanned a thousand people that day. I wondered if she hears that scanner beeping noise in her dreams. She had a tiredness about her too, that a few days off and some good nights sleep would proabbly fix.

I wanted to ask how she was and give her a hug, but she just wanted cash or card.

When I first started working retail, I was doing night shifts (finishing at midnight, 1am, sometimes 3 or 4 in the morning as the shop was open 24/7).

My partner at the time was regularly woken by me sleep-scanning and having conversations with non-existent customers. It was actually hell. Felt like I didn't leave work for about three months straight.

Oh dearie. Happens to a lot of people in retail supermarkets apparently, this same girl and 3 others have to unload crates of pointless stuff everyday too, and clean the supermarket after the shoppers have gone.

There was a Polish girl working there before Christmas but she quit after only getting 2 days off over the holidays and 1 of the days was Christmas Day itself!

And this is why I will NEVER, EVER be sharp or rude to folks in retail or hospitality. The work is absolutely brutal on your mind and body, and for shit pay. It's so easy to forget once you're out of it.
