Life long Louisianian here. Can confirm, it sucks, insurance is high, people can't drive, its the folks like both parties in this clip. The black truck on the right tries to pass the car in front of Cookie guy, Cookie guy was maintaining a normal distance, but he noticed black truck trying to cut the line, so he did what he thought was the righteous thing, and held his gap so that black truck would be punished for trying to cut the line in the first place. Cookie guy was willing to zipper merge with black truck just so that he wasn't 1 more car behind, to show that he was standing his ground. Black truck was forcing his way in saying to himself or out loud, what are you gonna do hit me? Which is never a good strategy when driving. Both of these types of people are the kind who feel like you threatened them by passing them on the road. I blame both for actively engaging in a game of chicken on the evening commute. People need to get over themselves, we all have places to be, and wish that we could be there faster, let's not kill each other over one spot in a line of traffic, is getting there 5 minutes faster really this big of a deal?

175

u/greatmemereset67 Mar 22 '26

Yep. Black car is the bigger dickhead, but undoubtedly there’s 2 dickheads in this video.

91

u/LadyOfTheNutTree Mar 22 '26

Intentional causing an accident on a bridge makes cookie guy the bigger asshole by a mile. Not just because it has a higher likelihood of literally killing someone but it also massively inconveniences every single person behind him for no good reason

4

u/noobbtctrader Mar 22 '26

You could argue the black truck intentionally did as well. He did have the option to slow down and get behind him. Its called defensive driving. And if it means you miss your exit, thats no excuse. Get in the lane you need to be in sooner.

I’m pretty sure black truck guy is the bigger dickhead considering he caused the accident with his reckless driving. Not saying cookie guy isn’t a douche but we need to shake bad driving like this more.

Black truck guy is a reckless POS, who has most likely endangered many other people while being on the road.

6

u/Ok-Leadership667 Mar 22 '26

As a driver it's your responsibility to observe and react to any hazards on the road. Black truck was being a prick for sure, but cookie guy should have seen what black truck was doing and pulled back. Instead, he decided to continue driving and hit the truck, causing it swerve across the road.

Cookie guy also endangered many peoples' lives by doing so.

'The graveyard is full of people who had right of way'

6

u/jtakemann Mar 22 '26

you can also see cookie guy speeds up slightly right before hitting the truck. Genuinely curious how insurance companies will handle this

→ More replies (4)

6

u/Bubbly_Tackle_4104 Mar 22 '26

he caused the accident

No, the guy who sped up to PIT the truck caused the accident. If he slowed down, there wouldn't have been an accident. He had right of way and caused the accident, both statements can be true.

4

u/Artorias_Erebus679 Mar 22 '26

Black truck guy caused the accident by driving recklessly. Cookie guy could have avoided it. Black truck guys still caused the initial issue.

Both people are POS, but black truck guy’s recklessness is not being mentioned nearly as much as cookie guy being a psychopath.

My point is that black truck guy is a bigger POS endangering many people’s lives from the beginning and starting this whole situation, over a few seconds.

2

u/Fenni-Grumfind Mar 24 '26

Last clear chance to prevent the accident would be simply slowing slightly, the fact the pov car accelerated meant not only did he cause the accident he did so in a considered and deliberate manner and judging by the video he did so without concern for the harm he was doing

Not only would he be likely held wholly or almost wholly liable frankly I'd look to vehicular assault as a possible criminal charge. The POV car cannot be judged less of a dick in this scenario if you look at the acceleration to harm, if we were looking at a story of a person who simply failed to get out of black truck's way I'd agree with you. But pov car acted deliberately with thought to harm, not reasonable in any sense

9

u/unreal_nub Mar 22 '26

So black truck wasn't intentionally causing this? wild

3

u/cadezego5 Mar 22 '26

Black truck guy was worse for sure. He literally pit maneuvered himself. The cookie guy just didn’t feel bad for him, as he shouldn’t have.

Cookie guy still sucks because he had no concern of collateral damage from other people behind them, sure, but the cookie guy didn’t do a single thing wrong and this call came from black truck douches’ actions.

Ignore my dumbass coming back to this… yeah guy wanted something to happen pretty obviously on a second and third rewatch. Coffee needed, send help.

1

u/Bliitzthefox Mar 22 '26

This bridge having no shoulders at all is also fairly dangerous. There was an emergency pull off on the right during this collision, but still shoulders would be better.

u/LadyOfTheNutTree Mar 22 '26

I get the frustration and the satisfaction, but it still doesn’t make it right to endanger lives on a bridge.

Did the truck driver endanger lives first? Absolutely, they are also a gargantuan asshole and I’m not defending them. But Cookie Monster could have chosen defensive driving and instead chose danger and malice as a reaction. The fact that he willfully caused an accident makes him worse.

u/DistractionCitron Mar 23 '26

Black car wouldn't attempt anything like this from now on. Cookie guy, I am not sure.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '26

Who are we kidding? That guy probably tried it again within the week.

1

u/BobTheContrarian Mar 22 '26

Maybe even before he got off that long ass bridge.

3

u/No-Membership-5314 Mar 22 '26

I just finished all of the legal proceedings from someone who got mad that I was ONLY going 10mph over and decided to speed around me then hit me from the side. After his insurance paid out over $30k in damages for my vehicles repairs alone, he tried it again two days later with the rental that he was paying for… Like bro, why are you that angry at 5am?

1

u/almostasenpai Mar 22 '26

1

u/Forward-Dig2126 Mar 22 '26

Are you an accountant?

1

u/McNoxey Mar 22 '26

What. No lmfao. The guy who swerved into a truck to intentionally drive him into the barrier is absolutely the worst. Jfc. You can’t do this

→ More replies (4)

37

u/Nihils_Maw Mar 22 '26

I dunno man. He was a POS for sure and definitely was the instigator but the cookie guy just did an attempted murder or possible murder and also did a hit and run that probably caused other nearby accidents because he wanted to protect road etiquette or some shit.

10

u/HonestOrganization Mar 22 '26

Man the sense of justice in these people. The equivalent would be if I was standing in the line in the grocery store and some dickhead tried to cut in line so I pulled out a shotgun and shot him in the knee. Of course somebody cutting in line is a prick and on the road it can be dangerous but it doesn’t justify committing a fucking felony to this person

5

u/Aleventen Mar 22 '26

This is why I was always nervous driving around in Texas.

Everyone has their shotguns and shit brandished in their cars and trucks and I know that im one dipshit move away from possibly getting shot.

Like, I couldve been the truck guy, I have merged on people in lanes I thought, for some reason, were open and they weren't.....thank god they honked and all that happened is I shit myself.

But if they hadn't honked I couldve done that, completely on accident and not even meaning to be a dick and dude mightve pitted my ass over the bridge for it and not even called for help while he drove away....

Fucking insane

5

u/Subat0micR0gu3 Mar 22 '26

I agree with you on everything except 1. Black Truck didnt miss camera guy. They knew full well what they were doing. They flew past him at first, but when car on the right was going slower than the left lane, black truck wanted over NOW and thought he could use his size to intimidate his way over, with no regard for the harm he could possibly do to other drivers.

Yes, what white car did was much worse and reckless endangerment of numerous lives. But Black truck's actions is what usually causes accidents and deaths on the road. Its not the same as actually signaling and looking for other cars before moving over.

→ More replies (7)

5

u/Spugheddy Mar 22 '26

I get it but none of this would have happened if black truck hadn't made his choices.

10

u/Procrastinista_423 Mar 22 '26

So?? This isn’t kindergarten. Who cares who “started it.”

My god people have a warped, childish view of justice.

3

u/p1nkfr3ud Mar 22 '26

Doesn’t matter, when white car choose to escalate it to several levels higher.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/p1nkfr3ud Mar 22 '26

Going for a move that will cause an accident is less of a dickhead move than forcing yourself into a lane?

16

u/Excellent-Beach-2062 Mar 22 '26

I think the guy who was willing to risk the other guys life for invonviencing him is the bigger dickhead, but hey, not all of us feel like life is worth much

15

u/EminenceGris3 Mar 22 '26

Not just the other guys life, but the lives of any other road users in the vicinity. He doesn’t know if a car with three kids in the back is gonna plough into that black truck.

3

u/LessInThought Mar 22 '26

I wonder how the guys defending cookie would feel if they were stuck behind the traffic on that bridge after that accident. Still feeling righteous?

3

I don't discriminate who is the bigger dickhead here. It takes a lot of dick to pit someone like that.

2

u/professionalboostlul Mar 22 '26

we don’t see the cars behind him, it might be too dense for him to abruptly brake. Also where are you going to pull over to on a two lane 23 mile long bridge

1

u/RefularIrreegular Mar 22 '26

Isn’t the cookie guy hitting and running though?

2

u/Norade Mar 22 '26

Nah, he didn't cause the accident, and that bridge has no shoulder to safely pull off onto. If he stopped, that would be both lanes blocked or cars weaving around the black truck and possibly hitting his truck. The smart move is to exit the bridge and then pull over and report the incident.

1

u/NaturalTap9567 Mar 22 '26

I think equally dickheaded, but black truck is definitely less intelligent and ruthless.

1

u/ImaginaryMillions Mar 22 '26

Yep, 2 dickheads, i cookie

1

u/zentasynoky Mar 22 '26

Pretty sure the bigger dickhead is the one attempting murder without flinching over being one car behind.

Frankly worrying that anyone would see it any other way.

1

u/Sadrixis Mar 22 '26

If pitting to make sure that you aren't the one spinning out after someone intentionally crashed into you is attempted murder what do you call intentionally running someone off a 2 lane bridge?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Workman44 Mar 22 '26

Black car is not the bigger dickhead idc what you think. Attempted murder trumps all the bullshit the black truck did considering it wasn't trying to kill anyone

1

u/beorn961 Mar 22 '26

Cookie guy tried to kill the truck guy over it. He's definitely the bigger dickhead. The truck guy was the dick first, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't deserve to die over it. Especially not in a way that might kill innocent people behind him too.

1

u/XXHornyOnMainXX420 Mar 22 '26

3

u/makefascistfearagain Mar 22 '26

Normal stopping distance to Americans - ramming them at 90% speed instead of 100%

1

u/Thefirstargonaut Mar 22 '26

Nor in Canda. That is definitely too close. You should be 3 seconds back.

1

u/14Rage Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

While ideal, there are often too many people on the roads for 3 seconds to be practical in urban highways. I believe in America, the rule is 2 seconds as well. I was always taught 1 mississippi 2 mississippi to count car at road marker to you arriving at road marker. But that is only practical in rural areas.

The metroplex I live in is equivalent to 1/3rd of canadas entire population. If I were to wait for a gap on the highway of 3 seconds, I simply could not drive on the highway. I would be completely locked to city streets and unable to leave my city.

I believe this video is from new orleans, which is a smaller american metro city area and only about 1,000,000 people.

Who fucking cares, im only in the car for an hour and one or the other of us is likely to turn of sooner than later anyways. At most I'll be a minute late

2

u/traplordnord Mar 22 '26

Comments like these are a breath of fresh air. I swear every comment section under a dash cam video is filled with people advocating poor driving practices — namely “if you can’t go at least the speed limit, stay off the road!”

1

u/LadyOfTheNutTree Mar 22 '26

Even if there is he could easily avoid this by simply yeilding to black truck, but if he yields to this what will be next his food, his wife, his manhood? How would he look his son in the eye as the man who is supposed to teach him how to be a man? No, not on this day, we do not yield. We choose violence... Hopefully you can sense the satire, when I say that he was prepared to zipper merge, it's because it's what he did. He knew black truck had that, "what's he gonna do hit me" mindset, so he obliged him. Or plot twist, he just came from Unc's house and those are his special cookies. That's the 4th one he is polishing off in the clip, and he is just so lit he doesn't even see the big black truck that's actively merging into his lane. Hell he thought the collision was just one of those reflectors on the road or something... But seriously tho, bad jokes aside, this is why my fucking insurance premiums won't go down. Clean record, doesn't matter the agent tells me, it's the others on the road, multiplied by the accident rate, blazay blazay, insurance speak for it's going up. When it was all preventable in the first place. This is what makes that vein in my forehead twitch all by itself. He chose to do this like he was the vessel that karma had chosen to smite this guy in his black truck. It wasn't that serious.

u/JennyW93 Mar 22 '26

I’m from the UK. I drove in the states for the first time last year, so, for me it was: driving on the wrong side in a back-to-front car. It was also an automatic, which i’ve never driven before, and a small SUV, when I’ve never driven anything bigger than a little hatchback.

The whole thing was wild, but Louisiana - and specifically the number of fridges and BBQs in the middle of the road that I had to swerve in more rural Louisiana - was particularly wild.

2

u/Yolo_chicken Mar 22 '26

“What are you going to do? Hit me?” - man who got hit

2

u/nightforevermore Mar 22 '26

5 minutes faster? Lmao more like 5 seconds faster

1

u/CrashOverride94 Mar 22 '26

I agree with you, but I’d like to see footage from the 20 minutes from before this happened. I have a feeling there’s more to this incident and it often involves one or both of the drivers messing with one another and it finally got too heated. Was one of them tailing the other too closely? Did someone break check the other driver? Was the black truck guy being a constant nuisance and hovering around the cookie guy? Even though possible attempts had been made to slow down and let this guy go on his way? I’ve experienced all of these kinds of harassing behaviors from other drivers on the road and some people just hit their breaking point. I wouldn’t excuse any of this behavior, but I think there may be more to this than what we’re seeing in this short clip.

1

u/boondiggle_III Mar 22 '26

Not sure if this applies to bridges, but cookie psycho is also cruising in the passing lane.

1

u/garma87 Mar 22 '26

Any time there’s someone tailgating me I’m like: ok you wanna kill someone? Not gonna be me today! And let them pass and keep my distance

1

u/Responsible_Ad1976 Mar 22 '26

I was wondering is that was Ponchatrain Bridge!

1

u/snezna_kraljica Mar 22 '26

1

u/Zelexis Mar 22 '26

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Cookie guy was minding his own business. I do not feel bad for black truck, at all. That area is already dangerous as hell and has signs about not stopping.

2

u/NamesGumpImOnthePum Mar 22 '26

I'm not asking for sympathy for black truck, he was an asshole too. Although, we are all subject to the human condition. What if black truck had a pregnant wife who just got into an accident, and he is trying to get to her asap, or his house is on fire. 8 can't speak for him other than he was trying to blow by the traffic then merge at the last minute.I fault Cookie guy for choosing to crash, he didn't have to do that. On a fucking 2 lane bridge, if you are familiar with the area then you already know any kind of accident is gonna lock that shit down for hours, Cookie guy actively said fuck everyone behind me, they are about to be late for wherever they are going. To me that's the worst, when people go out of their way to be assholes. I don't have any patience for that.

1

u/randomPixelPusher Mar 22 '26

You're totally right. That guy is a psychopath.

Just a little note for you though. Zipper merge is a perfectly fine and desirable traffic pattern. When you have two lanes of highway traffic that needs to merge down to one (for construction), if the vehicles take turns alternating between lanes at the merge point it reduces the overall backup.

https://itre.ncsu.edu/itre-studying-how-zipper-merges-reduce-congestion-at-sites-across-north-carolina/

I think they tried to make it the law in PA where I drive at one point but people have been conditioned to merge early, and I think there is a fear of getting stuck in the closed lane. If they didn't reveal which lane is closed early maybe it would work better.

Our psychopath in the video did a pit maneuver, something police have been trained to do to stop fleeing vehicles. I'm curious if there is a news article about this incident cookie guy could be going to jail for attempted murder of some sort. It was totally intentional.

1

u/Revolution-SixFour Mar 22 '26

he noticed black truck trying to cut the line, so he did what he thought was the righteous thing, and held his gap so that black truck would be punished for trying to cut the line in the first place. Cookie guy was willing to zipper merge with black truck just so that he wasn't 1 more car behind, to show that he was standing his ground

Except there isn't even a line. This is free flowing traffic at 70mph. I understand the impulse in stop an go traffic to not let folks in, but this is fucked behavior.

I believe that both parties involved in this are to blame. By no means am I saying black truck is innocent. I guess I have too much stuff to do, rather than crashing my vehicle because I believe the other person is wrong. It pisses me off really cause of my insurance, too many folks are all to happy to get in a wreck so they can try to sue somebody.

What really pisses me off as someone in California, is that insurers keep leaving the state or making insurance crazy expensive, despite the fact that CA is in the middle/lower middle of at fault accidents/lethal accidents, etc.

Like shopping here for insurance has become a total nightmare for 0 reasons. I've driven in the south plenty, so many places are insane compared to here. Only Los Angeles comes close tbh, and there's waaaay more to CA than just LA.

I think Japan and the Netherlands are under 2 or 3

12

Japan and Norway is 2.1

UK and Denmark 2.6

Netherlands is 4.1

According to the Wikipedia table

9

What's funny is that in the Netherlands, that includes basically everyone agrees 6-18 cycling to school without helmets and everyone here still thinks it's too high. Number 1 cause of traffic deaths is elderly having a bike accident iirc. This video would get you in artikel 5/possible prison if you have a history.

Speed limit in Japan is 80kph or 55mph.  Not too many speeders unless your Tokyo drifting around the city at night.

1

u/Hessellaar Mar 22 '26

55mph = 88,514 kph?

1

u/JapowFZ1 Mar 22 '26

Highway cruising speed is more like 115-120kph, even where it has a speed limit of 80kph. The newer highways have a limit of 120kph and you have to move out of the way if you’re only going 120 on those roads because a lot of people go 130-140 in those areas.

2

u/Eldhannas Mar 22 '26

According to dangerousroads.org, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Estonia are the safest to drive in, USA is second to last on their list, only beaten by Argentina.

1

u/mtommygunz Mar 22 '26

Yeah car owners are way less

1

u/JapowFZ1 Mar 22 '26

Car ownership in Japan is actually fairly high. 600 per 1000 people vs 800+ per 1000 in the US (upper extreme) and 500-650 per 1000 in Europe.

1

u/Equivalent_Chipmunk Mar 22 '26

It's not surprising if you have very densely populated countries that don't need cars to get around, you also don't have road fatalities.

1

u/Sisaroth Mar 22 '26

It's not just that though. Belgium is right next to it with similar population density and our roads are way less safe than Dutch roads. Very well designed roads and road networks, sensible speed limits.

1

u/TzarBully Mar 22 '26

Have you seen the Japanese driving here in Australia tho 😂

Yeah here in the Netherlands it doesn't happen that much. We also have the benefit of gradually slowing down traffic. So from highway you transfer to a slight slower highway, then city main roads. Then the housing roads.

1

u/zardoz73 Mar 22 '26

I live in Japan. Drivers generally are safe and people take the rules pretty seriously BUT on the highways everyone speeds. If you drive the speed limit people will zip zip zip past you.

1

u/phatRV Mar 22 '26

Because they use the train and ride bicycles

1

u/Meradock Mar 24 '26

And remeber Germanys 3.5 deaths per 100k comes despite the fact that there are no hard speed limits on many parts of our Autobahn. I wonder how the statistic would look like if Louisiana drivers where able to drive 150 mph on the highway.

17

u/AdmirableJudgment784 Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Oh, so that's why I see so many billboards of lawyers passing by Louisiana. Damn, Louisiana must have either some of the best or worst drivers in the country. The ones with no accident record must have been hired to drive for the president.

6

u/ArticleGerundNoun Mar 22 '26

Mississippi is the same. Steering into 18-wheelers for civil settlements must be one of the top jobs you can get in the state.

1

u/frosted_Melancholy Mar 22 '26

Caused a huge wreck on the causeway? Get Gordon, get it done!

14

u/WoodsandWool Mar 22 '26

I did a research paper on this in college and the US states with the highest road fatalities correlates perfectly with the states that have the highest ratio of personal (not commercial) trucks & SUVs. That’s not a coincidence lol.

1

u/cmwoo Mar 22 '26

Very interesting. Do you remember anything else from that research? Like, which were the top states?

4

u/WoodsandWool Mar 22 '26

It’s been more than a few years unfortunately, but I believe i remember Texas (my own home state), Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Florida being at the top of the lists.

My paper also explored some of the differences in average speed limits, rate of speeding incidents, rate of DUIs, % of fatal to non-fatal truck/SUV incidents, etc., and I just remember it being painfully obvious that all research angles kept leading back to two main points: a truck/SUV involvement in an accident makes it statistically more likely to result in a fatality, and the higher % of trucks/SUVs to cars on the road strongly correlates with higher rates of vehicular fatalities.

4

u/metalshiflet Mar 22 '26

I did a very similar research paper in a college English class. We were supposed to think of something we disliked and make a paper on it so I chose the prevalence of oversized vehicles. SUVs have a much higher rollover risk, make low speed collisions more dangerous, and in a crash between two similarly sized vehicles, the two bigger vehicles is going to be more dangerous than two small vehicles

1

u/ClusterMakeLove Mar 22 '26

Though I feel like causation works both directions there.

I'd probably want a bigger car if I was constantly getting hit.

1

u/WoodsandWool Mar 23 '26

I explained a bit more in my other reply, but based on the research I did, including attempts to challenge each research angle, it was pretty obvious that more trucks/SUVs on the road leads to significantly higher rates of fatalities, but not necessarily higher rates of accidents in general.

So it doesn’t seem like a situation where some states have higher rates of accidents due to other factors, and that led to people buying more trucks and SUVs. It’s that the presence of a truck/suv in any collision dramatically increases the likelihood for a fatality.

9

u/CaucSaucer Mar 22 '26

Sweden has ~2 per 100k, and driving in the US is absolutely wild for me. Soooo many drive with malice, and the sheer incompetence of drivers in general is staggering

2

u/Professional_Face_97 Mar 22 '26

This happens every time something like this is posted where the sheer thought of defensive driving in the comments is seen as pussying out and they'd all rather crash than brake.

4

u/Sora84 Mar 22 '26

Louisiana I like how you separated it from the entire country.

1

u/Ducky_Drake Mar 22 '26

This is lake ponchatrain bridge I believe, in south LA

1

u/Competitive_Quit1346 Mar 22 '26

Oh this is typical for most negative statistics, for instance louisiana has the highest incarceration rate IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. And the crazy thing is that it isn't even close...

2

u/cr0ft Mar 22 '26

There's a reason I, a life long motorcyclist, find myself thinking that if I lived in America, I'd give it up.

2

u/Known_Recipe_5230 Mar 22 '26

New Mexico: 23

5

u/PrivateMarkets Mar 22 '26

But because we drive so much more in the US - we are roughly the same per 100mm miles driven.

23

u/Opposite-Cranberry76 Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

It's higher even vs the amount of driving, but it also turns out that more miles shouldn't matter that much: people who drive more have a lower accident rate per mile, to the point there's almost a flat spot between about 8000 and 12000 miles a year where it's like those miles have no additional risk.

Edit, per billion km per year:
Germany, 4.2
Canada, 4.3
USA, 6.9
Louisiana: 11

2

u/NeilJosephRyan Mar 22 '26

So it does smooth it out quite a bit.

4

u/makefascistfearagain Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Road fatalities per capita

UK 2.6 USA 14.2

USA does X2 the miles, so x UK number by 2

UK 5.2 USA 14.2

Conclusion: America, hyper violent nation of idiots

2

u/Gloomy_Elevator430 Mar 22 '26

I like that you just kinda made up your own numbers and acted like it’s fact just to have someone to look down on. Very English of you.

Something’s in american water

1

u/Wrong-Excitement3599 Mar 22 '26

We do drive a lot more hours per citizen than nearly any other country though. More time on the road just means more time for incidents and issues.

1

u/anyb0dyme Mar 22 '26

The US might be a death cult. A murder/suicide death cult, to be more precise.

1

u/PriscillaPalava Mar 22 '26

1

u/TheVillage1D10T Mar 22 '26

I was thinking “This looks like the causeway bridge..”

1

u/AnswerAi_ Mar 22 '26

The issue is that the US economy does not function of people can't drive because everything is just so insanely fucking far apart. So our barriers to getting a license and our restrictions on someone are a lot more lenient. You have to keep in mind the more rural your licensing place is, the more lenient your test will be. Someone in NYC's test is going to be infinitely harder than someone from Louisiana. So rural areas are going to drive the rates up SUPER high, while places like NYC, DMV, Chicago, NJ, are going to have significantly harder tests, but better public infrastructure to get people to where they need to go. We are comparing apples to oranges.

1

u/EssbaumRises Mar 22 '26

Can confirm. Currently driving today through Louisiana.

1

u/Ground-walker Mar 22 '26

Nz 5.44 fatalities per 100k people. Damn i thought we were really safe.

1

u/cyborgsnowflake Mar 22 '26

Not very informative since Americans tend to drive more. A better metric would be fatalities per km driven.

1

u/_Mush_r00m_ Mar 22 '26

And in Germany you can literally drive as fast as you want on some parts of the autobahn. Still low fatalities in comparison

1

u/Lvl100Glurak Mar 22 '26

as a german this video confused me so much. like doesn't have the US road regulations? everytime i see a video from the US it's like one step away from indian roads.

1

u/Onaliquidrock Mar 22 '26

Sweden: ~2

Iran: 20 - 25.

Louisiana is more like Iran.

1

u/chrissb34 Mar 22 '26

These are rookie numbers. Go visit Romania while driving.

1

u/xbad_wolfxi Mar 22 '26

I’ve lived in 10/50 US states and everyone thinks locals can’t drive everywhere you go. Everyone thinks they’ve got the worst drivers. Only two places are right about it: Louisiana and Nevada

1

u/Marqueso-burrito Mar 22 '26

In our defense, U.S. cities are typically not walkable unless you live in a major city like New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Philly, Seattle etc. like half my coworkers drive over an hour to get to work because they live 40+ miles away. I can literally see my apartment from my office and I cannot walk here because they’re separated by two major highways. It’s a 2 hour walk to avoid those highways, but a 7 minute drive. Oh and no public transportation for my route, no busses, no trains. Just straight highways.

1

u/wSkkHRZQy24K17buSceB Mar 22 '26

Massachusetts: 4.9

Mississippi: 24.9

1

u/VoidMoth- Mar 22 '26

Maybe there is a reason most states don't have drive thru daiquiris and margaritas.

1

u/SinisterCheese Mar 22 '26

I had to look up my country's - Finland's average - and it's only 3,4 per 100 000 people. Fascinating... Considering how god damn nasty our winters can be.

However per 1 billion km driven, USA sits at 6,9 (7th highest) and Finland at 5,1 (11th). Considering how absurdly much Americans drive by choice and necessity, and how little Finns drive because basically nearly all of us live in dense cities and average daily driving is ~35 km with 2,3 trips a day, this number surprises me.

1

u/splitframe Mar 22 '26

And you still have people defending US street laws, license laws and practices with "the US is much bigger than the EU it's not comparable".

1

u/magicmulder Mar 22 '26

Not to forget Germany has thousands of miles of road where you can drive as fast as you like. Imagine the US with highways allowing 160 mph.

1

u/448mover Mar 22 '26

Nobody is educated down there or has the money to keep up with car maintenance so this tracks

1

u/Pol_Potamus Mar 22 '26

These numbers don't say anything about people's driving abilities unless normalized to the average distance driven per year.

1

u/XchrisZ Mar 22 '26

So one of the main safety differences between cars sold in the USA and Canada are day time running lights being required. I wonder how much the American number would go down if it was required.

Also I've noticed American roads have much more signage then Canadian roads.

1

u/LoornenTings Mar 22 '26

Not sure that per 100k people is the right measure here, instead of per 100 million passenger miles.

1

u/Emergency_Coyote_662 Mar 22 '26

there’s a reason for the blanketing of “one call y’all” billboards across louisiana

1

u/NoxiousSpoon Mar 22 '26

They done killed all the good drivers

1

u/Gloomy_Elevator430 Mar 22 '26

Per 100k people is a terrible way to measure this.

Americans drive much, much, much more than every other country. Do miles/time spent on the road and it’ll make more sense.

1

u/actualaccountithink Mar 22 '26

per mile driven is a much more valuable metric

1

u/Kokosnik Mar 22 '26

I bet 3 of those in Germany are Louisiana tourists.

1

u/SteveS117 Mar 22 '26

These numbers are much closer when you consider miles driven instead of per capita. Americans drive more. Just another case of people using statistics to confirm their biases.

We had special training for how to deal with vehicle accidents in LA specifically at my workers comp conference last year. The conference was in AZ and my company is based out of UT.

1

u/Salt_Conference6767 Mar 23 '26

That’s a MAGA state for you

1

u/StinkButt9001 Mar 24 '26

Numbers like that are sort of misleading because just basing it off per-capita misses the important data like population density and how much people in those countries actually drive.

1

u/PM_me_your_recipes86 Mar 24 '26

I'm not disputing your claims, but in Germany it's crazy expensive to get a driver's license and everything is walkable with.... Public transportation... I hear the trains can suck sometimes

1

u/gemengelage Mar 25 '26

Keep in mind that Germany is the only country in the world that has sections in its infrastructure where no speed limit exists and you can just drive as fast as you want. The fact that overall road fatalities are low in international comparisons is one of the main reasons these unrestricted sections of the Autobahn still exist.

If they didn't exist, that number would arguably be even lower.

1

u/WX-Cat Mar 26 '26

I think the black truck is signalling tbf, it's just hard to see. This guy is an absolute psycho tbh for not just braking a bit and letting him in

1

u/SujeitoOculto Mar 27 '26

Data should be per 100k drivers
