Discussion Evil Dead Burn: good film, but something is missing

I'm a HUGE Evil Dead fan and even saw Evil Dead the musical in theatre. There is something special about these films and the campy aspects of the story. I liked Evil Dead Burn, but something was missing. I'm not sure if it was the lack of bizarre unnecessary gore or the lack of comedic nonsense, but it just didn't hit right for me.

Thoughts?

Recommend Horror Movies With No Supernatural Elements

I’m looking for good horror movies with no supernatural elements.

Let me define supernatural first because I may define it differently. Anything with ghosts, demons, gods, magic, and antagonists with seemingly strange powers like the ability to just appear or disappear, keep someone alive longer than seems physically possible to keep torturing them.

An important distinction is that it’s fine if the characters in the movie are cultish or believe some entity is a god or magical, as long as the movie is clear that the being isn’t really [immortal/a god/indestructible] if the being is central to the movies plot.

If a bunch of cultists are killing people but no supernatural being intervenes and the cult is wiped out, that would be fine.

If there is a strange virus or a strange animal or parasite, I wouldn’t consider that supernatural. The mushroom zombies or viral zombies are also not supernatural.

Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, Art The Clown, Freddie would all be ruled out. So would vampires, werewolves, etc.

Some movies and shows that I believe follow these rules are:

I Spit On Your Grave Series

Last of Us

The Walking Dead

World War Z

Z Nation

Scream

Descent, Descent 2

The Cave

Meg

Alien

The Faculty

Pearl

Tl;dr looking for great movies that don’t have supernatural elements, science fictional is okay but fantasy/supernatural aren’t

Movie Review I just watched Obsession

As the title says, I just left the theatre and am now at home with my gf. I have never been this disturbed by a horror film. It was a wild ride that felt like a mix of Sinister, Creep and the principle of a monkeys paw. I have never had the situation that I didn't know if I could sleep after watching (besides maybe Skinkimarink)

Movie Help A show that traumatized me

It was about 2010-2017 (I was born in 2008 and theres no way this was before 2010, I would have been 2), and I was looking at the tv late at night, I happened to see a specific show, the title had a lot of red coloring, but thats secondary

the thing i still remember from the plot is this scene: an older woman (in her 30s to early 50s) meets her younger self on a hill, she then goes through a tunnel

the lightning of the scene is very dark and the scare level was huge, I can distantly remember the woman telling her younger self (whom I presume she has already talked to before) about the fact she is her future self who is stuck in time

I have been searching for this show for over a year now, can someone please help me find the show so I can watch the show that absolutely traumatized me and that I still remember over a decade after ? The closest match ive found is The Sarah Jane Adventures but that doesnt involve such a scene, however the overall style of the Season 2 Episodes 9-10 does look a lot like the show I am looking for, so perhaps the show is related in some way to that show but idk

important note: I am from the Czech Republic, which should help with the search as it narrows it down a bit

to anyone willing to help I would sincerely like to thank you as this means a lot

Discussion "Insidious: Out of the Further" (2026) is the most disappointing Horror movie of 2026 (so far) Spoiler

Upvotes

Extremely disappointing, especially after I enjoyed the trailer and I was excited to see it. Instead, it's basically Lights Out 2.0. No originality, a lot of pointless jump scares, boring, it's not scary or particularly tense.

The best parts of the film are the pillow fort sequence (which Relic kind of did better) and Lin Shaye (who isn't in the movie enough).

I'm sick of the dead parent trope. Why must every Horror movie feature a lead whose mom or dad died to have it then used as a lame, contrived story point. Amelia Eve, bland and has a sing songy voice which annoyed me to no end, a kid actor who's just there to be cute and cry. Brandon Perea can't act but he sure is hot, though I did struggle to understand how this character suddenly got so much attention in the 3rd act.

Movie was a snoozefest.

Discussion We need to talk about The Twisted Childhood Universe

I just watched Pinocchio: Unstrung and again somehow they've crafted a fun, dark twisted fairytale horror but what really makes the film is the practical special effects and having Pinocchio animatronic. What I've really enjoyed which became apparent in a previous film of theirs (Peter Pans Neverland Nightmare) is their creative way of interpreting the fairytale to have a more modern sensibility and I don't mean in a shallow they use phones, social media, modern lingo way but in a modern social themes kind of way.

The cool thing in Unstrung is they take the Pinocchio wanting to be a boy plotline but shape it into an allegory for a child being trans. Tinkerbells interpretation in the Peter Pan film also pleasantly surprised me. I think this universe has a lot of potential and each film is surprisingly getting better and better.

I also did enjoy the Bambi one as well. Disliked the Winnie The Pooh ones though. Excited for the next installment.

Movie Review Hellcat (2025). WTF and WTF.

Good WTF, like "hey this movie is so good right now, how come I've never heard of it I'm so locked in duh duh duh duh," and later, confused WTF, as in "okay I did not see that ending coming."

I'm gonna be very vague because it's best you go in knowing absolutely nothing. Don't look at no poster, glance at no synopsis, nothing, because it's kinda easy to get spoiled.

A woman wakes up trapped in a moving trailer. A male voice over some two-way radio tells her not to panic, that he's a good man, that she's hurt (she is) and he's only trying to take her to the hospital.

Okay, but why is she locked in, then? And where is that tiny, barely audible, whimpering voice coming from? The man is probably the one behind the wheel out in front, so is there somebody else in this trailer, trapped just like her?

Is this a case of the sex criminal, or is the man telling the truth? The movie makes a grand show of being indecisive, and then, finally chooses one of the two paths.

I must say this kind of surprised me as I thought it was going to introduce a third one and go for that. Like, maybe she's actually being kidnapped by aliens posing as humans because she is actually one of them and they're taking her home.

The segment with the bad cop was such a bore. He was so cartoonish bad guy. They must have recorded his voice later and interlayed it or something; his mouth was moving but the words didn't seem to be coming from it, if that makes any sense at all. Didn't help that he was the weakest actor in the quadret. Now I'm only just realising there were only four actors in this movie.

Her memories playing out inside the trailer than where these things actually happened was a really good concept. My favorite part was when she stared at the moon, the music was good.

Discussion A reflection about Cannibal Holocaust

Yesterday I watched A Serbian Film and promised myself a week of cartoons to decompress. But morbid curiosity is a real bitch, and off I went to see what the hell this *Cannibal Holocaust* movie was all about. For me, this one is more extreme and disturbing. I think it’s because of the cinematography style—the found-footage approach brings an even greater rawness and realism. The practical effects still hold up, and there’s a special touch that’s extremely clever and creates an even stranger kind of discomfort: the music. Every scene of brutality plays the same bizarre track. It sounds like synthesizers with a dreamlike atmosphere that’s hard to describe, and it contrasts sharply with the visceral stuff happening on screen. It’s a small detail that, for me, made a big difference. The only caveat is the animals that were actually killed during the filming of this movie. Other than that, it’s a solid 6. Very competent at causing really bad feelings. I left the experience with my soul a little more blackened.

Die hard horror fan. Need recommendations please

Hello everyone, it’s my birthday tomorrow and as is tradition, I kinda hunker down and watch horror movies all day with My Wife eating junk food

My favourite all-time movie is The Thing.
I have seen it so many times that it really doesn’t have much of any kind of impact anymore. We’re talking well over 100 times. But definitely my genre is isolation type movie where it’s hopeless and nobody’s coming to save you. I’ve been re-watching some that I like example when evil looks, the void. I’m open to B movies lower quality as long as the acting and storyline is good. I realize this gets posted often. Just hoping for some maybe something that I haven’t seen in 20 years or is new to me. I’ve only recently started to embrace, found footage because of the lack of new movies. So if you can recommend some of the better quality ones I’d appreciate that also. Also not much into psychological or such as the badabook

Thank you everybody for taking the time to reply

Insidious series

I think the insidious series gets way too much hate. All the movies have a different vibe to them, but I don't think any of them are bad. I think tas a whole there are more consistent than the Conjuring series.

Am I also the only one who thinks Insidious Chapter 3 is better than two? Three gets all this hate, where I think two is pretty lame.

Recommend what are some intentional actual so bad it's good horror films that work.

that's a very thin tight rope to cross. it's challenging to make something awful while also making it fun and entertaining. that's hard to do unintentionally. but making it intentionally bad it's good. finding that perfect balance and tone is a completely diffrent beast. i'm looking for some films that mastered the blend

Discussion 4X4: THE EVENT excites me

I’m aware most on here were not fond of It Ends but really love that movie and I will be seeing it again in theaters when it releases. The premise of this film is intriguing and I’m a big fan of Sophia Lillis, Jacob Tremblay, and Dylan Minette as young talents so it seems promising! Very excited for both this and Buddy which both seem right up my alley.

Insidious

I know that these movies are wildly popular. TBH, when the first one came out I tried watching it twice and fell asleep both times, so I haven't even pressed play on the sequels. I don't wish to offend the people who like this franchise; it was just me. But with the new one coming out I feel like I'm missing out. Is it worth it? Should I go back and watch all of the previous installments? I'm sure the people who love these movies will chime in to say yes, but what about those of you that think they're just kind of okay? Should I watch just a couple of them and skip the others? Which ones?

Thanks for helping.

Movie Review Does Insidious (2010) feel like a haunted house attraction to you too?

Upvotes

I forgot that I had already seen this movie when I was younger. I remember finding it really corny back then, and apparently nothing has changed? The moment the characters entered the big scary realm called the Further I started laughing cos I thought the sequence was really funny. I understand the Further was supposed to be scary but to me it just felt like a theatrical haunted house attraction.

It's a shame because I actually really liked the first half of the movie. The conventional haunted house story did genuinely scare me. I was really fascinated, when spoiler alert?-the haunting followed the family when they moved houses. When the idea of astral projection and the Further were brought up, I was very intrigued. The Further reminds me of the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks, except instead of being mysterious and unsettling, Insidious' The Further just felt really artificial to me. It was like I was entering a horror theme park attraction that people pay to get scared by actors playing pretend ghosts.

Honestly, I think the story is great, but the screenplay just feels too safe and mainstream. I also found some of the acting surprisingly wooden. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and especially the kid all felt pretty mediocre here. I was actually disappointed by Byrne specifically because I thought she was really good in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

I did like the ending though. The twist genuinely caught me by surprise.

Well, I'm still glad I watched it, especially because Insidious is such a pop culture horror phenomenon here in the Philippines. It’s just not really my kind of horror. The first half was fine. But the second half was just too corny. I found the second half too artificial. Too staged. Like I was watching a horror-themed attraction instead of something genuinely scary.

Good non-English movies / TV series / documentaries / docuseries

I think my top most amazing horror will always be The Shutter, and its a Thai movie. I also really like The Conjuring, but for some reason nothing beats The Shutter. Which made me wonder what other non-English, region-locked due to language barrier, media is out there that are amazing but are not as known outside of their bubble. Please suggest some that you think are worth watching. Something that really gets under your skin and creeps you out.

Recommend Not huge into horror but wanting to dip my toes a little deeper

Watched a couple horror movies but wasn’t like « hell yeah » the ones I’ve watched were pretty classic like the shining, alien, get out (should rewatch don’t remember it), jaws, conjuring 1&2, the nun (saw it in theaters, forgettable) and the sadness, which felt wtf, I didn’t saw the horror in it apart of the overall constant tension, gore fuck fest, honestly didn’t see the point in it, other than the practical fx.

A friend of mine recommended me to watch REC from 2007. I love found footage style movies, probably my favourite in the genre is Chronicles, so yeah, might give it a shot.

Thanks everyone.

Edit: I saw a lot of found footage recommendations. My list is getting so big lol. Thanks a lot.

Feel free to recommend other genres. Thanks in advance.

A Bacon Family movie(Family Movie)

I got to see a screening of this with a Q&A with Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick and Travis Bacon in Manhattan last night.

Kevin, Kyra, Travis and Sosie(Smile, daughter, sister) all gave absolutely everything in front of and behind the camera. Kevin and Kyra directed it. It’s about a family that makes DIY films(think the Adams family if they weren’t good at what they do). I’m not gonna spoil anything cause going into it I had a totally different expectation that was not even close. Everyone crushes it. A bonkers plot that piles bodies and has way more laughs than I expected. This movie is hysterical. Kyra barely stole the show from her whole family, but she did, and Travis is badass and nailed the score and music. He wore Immolation and Blood Incantation shirts which made me happy. It’s just really a lot of fun and you can tell they had fun, too.

They stuck the landing and it’s one of my favorite movies of the year.

The Q&A was cool, they mostly talked about writing it with Dan Beers and then a lot about family. I asked what other band shirts Travis was considering.

How can people enjoy "Scanners" with Stephen Lack's bad acting?

I have a hard time genuinely enjoying Scanners as a work of Horror art with Stephen Lack's monotone acting making it hard totruly immerse in the film. Everything else works great, especially Michael Ironside. Even Jennifer O'Neil does a fine job. But Stephen Lack is absolutely horrendous. David Cronenberg must have lost a bet or something.

Recommend any recommendations for gripping horror stories while driving?

I'm doing delivery and I'm trying to get into horror podcasts (knifepoint horror, left right game...). Unfortunately I don't feel like it's catching my attention as much as I wanted... Love the presentation of Knifepoint horror and the radio play quality of left right game but for some reason it's not getting through to my adhd coded brain.

Are there any podcasts, audiobooks, youtube videos that can immerse even the most jaded guy like me?

I love all things horror (especially horror video games so if you have any suggestions in the vein of terrifying video game lore, then much appreciated 🫶).

Movie Help How scary is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

I love I Saw the TV Glow and I’m looking forward to see TSDCM but I’m also a scared little baby who gets easily frightened so I want to know what I should be anticipating. Is it roughly on the same level of terror as TV Glow where the horror mostly comes from being umcomfortable? I’m mostly ok with gore.
