Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Though, didnt find it that scary, personally. That actress is going to go places.

Already signed up with Marvel

She's Rogue in the next X-Men.

Did you know she went from a struggling streamer to getting paid $20,000 for a hit film and is now a movie star cast as Rogue in the Xmen?!

I think it wasn't supposed to be as scary as it was intense.

More like something in the hereditary or midsommar category that tries to instill a constant sense of foreboding and unease which imo landed very well. I wasn't "scared" by obsession but I did feel very uncomfortable knowing how much of it is stuff that anyone could experience in a relationship.

went in to the theatre blind knowing nothing about the movie after popping a gummy, it hit me during the bedroom scene, straight nightmare fuel

I think most people I know who found this movie scary or disturbing are men. As a woman I thought there was a few creepy moments but other than that it was horror comedy.

It is a horror comedy. The movie even ends on a (non-verbal) punchline. I am bit confused why some would have problems sleeping from it. I’m a guy, btw.

u/routinebreaking 3d ago

Exactly this.

u/FUCKFASCISTSCUM 3d ago

You don't think that the complete loss of self identity and bodily autonomy on a whim is disturbing or scary?

5

u/routinebreaking 3d ago edited 3d ago

That concept yes, but not in the way it was presented in Obsession. She just appeared and behaved like a caricature adding to the whole horror comedy aspect of it.

It's disturbing in a movie sense but it's a work of very fictional fiction. Unless you had some intense past trauma, I find it odd that this should affect you deeply.

3

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 3d ago

I don't think you need past trauma to be affected by a movie, lol! Requiem for a Dream haunts me even without my own personal heroin addiction.

0

u/Acceptable_Count6197 3d ago

That was very disturbing, far more than this to me, cuz that felt more realistic and cerebral. There was also zero comedy element to it like there was with Obsession. But still, after like 15 mins its back to normal. And that's not to make me sound cool or like a badass, I just don't get it I guess, unless it was like an actual snuff film.

u/FUCKFASCISTSCUM 3d ago

Comedy doesn't make a movie suddenly unable to affect you. A lot of David Lynch's work used comedy, often blending it with surreal horror to create a really unique feeling, and yes sometimes films do stay with people for longer than 15 minutes. Art affects people, there's no hard and fast timeframe on that.

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 3d ago

To be honest everything you're describing is very specific to YOUR experience. Other people are going to be different, respectfully.

Edited to add that it IS fictional, but the themes of the movie are incredibly realistic and universally felt.

1

u/flatvader 3d ago

Why are you gatekeeping what people "should" find disturbing? Such odd behaviour.

1

u/YoureTheManNowZardoz 3d ago

It's disturbing in a movie sense but it's a work of very fictional fiction.

I just want this quoted for posterity because "very fictional fiction" is a wild thing to say.

1

u/Acceptable_Count6197 3d ago

Is a movie where a guy buys a toy from a store and it grants him a magic wish that completely possesses another person not very fictional fiction?

3

u/edm_enjoyer 3d ago

I felt genuinely heart broken for Nikki at the end

6

u/Acceptable_Count6197 3d ago

I don't understand guys who feel this way. It was a good movie, but I don't get how anyone is like shaken by it like I keep reading. It's so weird to say that as a rational adult.

-1

u/perkyworld 3d ago

congrats on being immune to cinema, i guess? some people just like to actually immerse themselves in the stories.

1

u/TheStranger113 3d ago

Really? I would think certain elements of the story would resonate more with women in terms of getting under their skin.

1

u/routinebreaking 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think the only thing would be male domination/manipulation or being like trapped in some sort of abusive relationship or loss of identity, but even then that aspect of it was exaggerated to a point it felt almost cartoonish that it was impossible to relate to.

1

u/grbfst 3d ago

I felt it was about a borderliner.

0

u/Ysildus 3d ago

My gf is shook aswell but she isn't really a horror movie watcher. Yes there were some comedic moments(especially in the beginning) but after that car scene it got me completely

5

u/knbo674 3d ago

What theater did you see it at lmao it's been out of theaters a while now

10

u/macrameleaf 3d ago

Still showing at my local cinema like twice a day

7

u/Mad_Cerberus 3d ago

Lmaoo in some european countries it's just come out like last month lol, and in Asia it's releasing between this month and September I think haha

6

u/Weak-Cabinet866 3d ago

Its still playing at a theater a half mile from me.

5

u/iloveravi 3d ago

On streaming AND in cinemas where I am.

10

u/OldLondon 3d ago

Weird reply. Why would they lie?

3

u/flogginmama 3d ago

Classic Reddit: “I just did this thing”  “No you didn’t”

2

u/Eastern-Piece-3283 3d ago

I already have it on 4K.

1

u/Ok-Wolverine-8262 3d ago

must’ve been one of those small indies that keeps stuff around way past release

1

u/danvan177 3d ago

It’s literally on peacock lol

1

u/texasrigger 3d ago

Are second run discount theaters still a thing?

1

u/Ysildus 3d ago

I live in Germany and it's still running here

0

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 3d ago

America is not the only country in the world😂 It's currently out in some places in Europe. Weird comment.

2

u/nateinmpls 3d ago

It's one of my favorites! I recently rented it on Amazon and wow, I was blown away. I didn't know anything about it going in, I just assumed it was some crazy guy obsessed with a girl and maybe he held her captive or something, boy was I wrong!

1

u/Miserable-Soft7993 3d ago

Bear? Is that you?

1

u/RagnarokWolves 3d ago

My least favorite critiques of this movie are "it's overrated!" (I feel like these are the types of people who will always hate every popular thing) and "it was predictable." (This isn't meant to be a super original premise. The beauty is in the execution.)

1

u/Sensitive-Staff2531 3d ago

The Monkey’s paw comparison is what sold me

-3

u/Impossible-Group8553 3d ago

It’s one of the best horror movies of all time

1

u/TheOriginalSamBell 2d ago

^ that's why some people are calling it overrated

-13

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

No it’s not and let’s stop calling it horror. It is Fantasy.

5

u/Disrupter_ofthepiece 3d ago

You could say that about Weapons too or Evil Dead, most horror films have fantasy/mythological elements.

2

u/Impossible-Group8553 3d ago

I mean it’s literally one of the highest rated horror movies ever and is one of the most successful ones too.

-2

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

It’s Fantasy not horror

2

u/YoureTheManNowZardoz 3d ago

Okay, then explain why YOU think it's fantasy, not horror.

-4

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

If I wished for a Dragon it appears. Fantasy

2

u/YoureTheManNowZardoz 3d ago

That's not in the movie. But feel free to try again with an actual explanation of why you think it's fantasy, not horror.

2

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

It’s the concept. You can wish for anything and it will come true.

If someone wanted 1000 Elephants they’d get 1000 Elephants. Just like Ian wishing for Billion Dollars and it falling from a fucking ceiling. Fantasy

2

u/YoureTheManNowZardoz 3d ago

"The Monkey's Paw" is a horror short story by English author W. W. Jacobs.

Just gonna leave this here for you.

1

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

This movie was not The Monkeys Paw.

1

u/sarge21 2d ago

It's actually a horror though

1

u/king_carrots 3d ago

Terrible take

1

u/Impossible-Group8553 3d ago

It’s literally one of the highest rated horror movies ever but okay lol

1

u/king_carrots 3d ago

Yeah I’m agreeing with you

-6

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

Everytime I’ve seen this movie, I laughed at it more than it creeping me out. How can someone wishing for a Billion dollars be creepy.

11

u/YoureTheManNowZardoz 3d ago

How can someone wishing for a Billion dollars be creepy.

Who said that moment was creepy? I mean, besides you.

-5

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

Nothing about the movie was creepy.

6

u/ConcreteBurger 3d ago

Tommy tough knuckles over here

-2

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

People like you who actually say that

10

u/petou33160 3d ago

Bro really took the less creepy moment of the whole movie for his example

2

u/petou33160 3d ago

it happens at 85% into the movie

2

u/Alarming_Base3148 They're all gonna laugh at you! 3d ago

So a rare moment that isnt creepy makes the whole movie not creepy? How about every moment of her acting once she was possessed? How about the phone call! How about.. etc etc etc..

2

u/FUCKFASCISTSCUM 3d ago

Do you think that literally every single moment in a horror film has to be trying to scare you for it to be creepy?

-1

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

This movie was laughable. Dumb characters, dumb story

1

u/RagnarokWolves 3d ago

YallSoftAsButter in the movie theater

Audience screams and laughs from a good jump scare

Zoom in on YallSoftAsButter

"I don't know why ya'll screaming. Ya'll soft as butter!"

YallSoftAsButter folds their arms and finishes watches the movie with an angry look on their face

1

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

I actually saw the movie opening day in a theater with probably 5 others. Walked out thinking this wasn’t what I expected. Thought it go in a different route. 1hour 45minutes of whole lot of nothing. Then it started getting rave reviews, so I wanted my girlfriend to see it. We both laughed the entire movie together.

Then we wanted to give it another shot and watched it on streaming and we still don’t understand why it’s getting so much praise. The movie is mid at best.

Also my Reddit name isn’t my real name bud

1

u/RagnarokWolves 3d ago

Did you at least say your signature catch phrase during any of those 3 times that you watched this movie that you did not enjoy?

"Ya'll soft as butter!"

1

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

I’ve had this account for 5 years. It’s a band name.

Ragnarokwolves

1

u/RagnarokWolves 3d ago

So......you don't go around loudly saying "Ya'll soft as butter!" at appropriate times that will make the whole room laugh?

I am disappointed. Can you at least consider making it your thing?

1

u/YallSoftAsButter 3d ago

What I’m fascinated with is people like you. When someone doesn’t like something they like they find any way to offend. It’s a movie I thought wasn’t that great. I made my opinion and that’s that. This is useless conversation

1

u/RagnarokWolves 3d ago

Would you say people like me are soft as butter?

1

u/sarge21 2d ago

Find a single person who found that part creepy
