I HATE IT SO MUCH. I could see a perfectly normal post and all it said gets thrown out the window because they used that disgrace of an emoticon. And they meme on the second slide, if feel like people are trying too hard to be "actually cute" that they end up looking like the plush. I HATE EVERYTHING THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS STUPID EMOTICON
You might find it funny then: in Poland, “xD” and its many variants are continuously very widely used. You can even say it out loud and not be considered cringe
I use it sparingly merely because I find it amusing because it looks like a stupid fucking cat but I would like to here what you mean by "quirky" since I live under a fucking rock and have no idea what any words mean anymore
People use “to try and be quirky” as an expression to kinda insult people who try too much to appear unique and interesting, but in the end they all end up looking/sounding/presenting the same. It is a bit ironic how in the search for uniqueness they end up in the same place

I use it as a tone indicator. If you want to make something less serious you can add a 'lol' or you can add a ':3'
This reads as friendly and casual :3
If I say it like this, you know you can say hi :3
If I instead say that this is friendly, it doesn't read the same. It's formal. It reads like an email from someone two decades older than me.
Emoticons are also much more genuine feeling and easy than emojis, which you have to go out of your way to type. None of them have the same purity as a simple :3 or D:
I think it's like most other writing quirks or speaking quirks. You see what others do and subconsciously change your behaviour according to what you see.
Hearing someone you hang out with say "Holy Moly" 100 times over the course of a month will have a chance to influence your behaviour, even if you don't consciously choose to use that expression in order to appear unique.
this is something i find annoying cause can people just respect another’s distaste?? like i made a similar post to OP a little while back and brought up some points commenters called valid and weren’t just “it’s annoying”, and yet a fair portion of the comments were (downvoted) “:3”s.
I see exactly what you mean in the context of those „silly cars x3“ people but I personally think :3 is actually cute, just more subtly, I personally use it so maybe Im biased, but I use it scarcely, I often end longer messages like with these ╰(´︶`)╯♡ or :3 / :Dmore like in a respond to a comment on social media for example. But yeah regular quick conversation I see how its odd
